1963 BEAR50-YEAR UPDATE

Of all the records of a student’s high school experience, the yearbook seems to be the most popular. Thankfully, it does not record grades, classes cut, tardiness, disciplinary issues, etc. It does however present a slice in time, recording images, accomplishments, efforts, attitudes, dreams and aspirations.

The 1963 BEAR does just that for the fifteen graduating seniors of Campbellsville High School in May of 1963. Its pages are packed with pictures of smiling, laughing, jubilant faces all looking forward toward the years ahead.

Well 50 of those years have swiftly passed, and only thirteen of the fifteen remain. These thirteen have pursued very different life paths – as different as their different personalities. In later years, when one occasions to pull the yearbook from the shelf and peruse its pages viewing the long ago pictures of very youthful faces, one question always comes to mind, “I wonder what ever happened to ‘ole Tom or Sue or Jack’?”

In an effort to answer that question for the remaining thirteen 1963 graduates, this yearbook update has been prepared. Included, for each graduate, is a recent picture where available and a biographical summary of the last 50 years. Each of these summaries tells a story. In reading these stories, one will see that some of the graduates sought additional education, while others had had enough. Some married and started a family quickly, while others waited until later. Some moved away while most still live near the Campbellsville community. Some have stayed in touch while others have rarely been seen or heard of. Every man that was qualified for military service, served. Some were caught up in the Vietnam War while the others served in other exciting places. Some raised several children, others none. Some had several jobs, others only one.

But there is a common thread that runs through each of these stories; all have worked. They all have dutifully taken their places in society as dedicated mothers and fathers and carpenters and truck drivers and farmers and hairdressers and managers and waitresses and engineers and nurses and soldiers and students and employees and crossing guards and teachers and bank tellers. All have become solid, hardworking, patriotic, honest, tax paying American citizens.

After 50 years the graduating class of 1963 continues to enjoy its place among all the other classes proudly displaying the grit and fiber and mettle laced and forged into our being at Campbellsville High School.
