Campbellsville University was founded in 1906 by the Russell Creek Baptist AssociationasRussellCreekAcademyinCampbellsville,Ky. In1924the institutionbecameknownas CampbellsvilleJuniorCollege.Itmadethetransitiontoafour-yearcollegein1960andreacheduniversity status in 1996, changing the name once again to become Campbellsville University.

Now in her 108th year of service, Campbellsville continues to see unprecedented growthin terms of enrollment, construction of new facilities, renovation of existing facilities and producingsuccessfulgraduates.

Nestled between the Cumberland Plateau and the Appalachian Mountains, Taylor County and Campbellsville, Ky., serve as home to Campbellsville University. Taylor County, population 25,000,islocatedinthegeographicalcenterofKentucky,only85-90milesawayfromBowlingGreen,LexingtonandLouisville.Theuniversityfamilygivesbacktothecommunitythroughservice and time but also provides a more than $101 million economic impact to the area.

The seven-day mission included sports clinics, visiting orphanagesandwomen’ssheltersandfeedingthehomeless.

ShannonWathenisinher14thseasonatCampbellsvilleand13thasheadcoachfortheLadyTiger softballprogram. Wathen, a 1999 graduate of Campbellsville, was a two-time NAIAAll-American and two-time KodakAll-AmericanfortheLadyTigerwomen’sbasketballprogram.Sheendedherplayingcareer in the Top 10 in numerous CU stat categories, including 1,365 points, 690 rebounds, 600 assists, 275 steals and 59 blocks. She began her coaching career as a women’s basketball graduate assistant. She decided to return toCampbellsvilleUniversityin2000asaLadyTigerassistantbasketballcoachunderformerHallof FameCoachDonnaWise. In2003,shetookoverasheadcoachoftheLadyTigersoftballprogram.Duringher13yearsas

headcoachshehasanoverallrecordof468-237-2. In2005theLadyTigersnotchedtheirfirstofthreestraightMid-SouthConferenceregularseasonchampionships.CUwon the MSC regular season again in 2009, co-champs in 2013 and this season in 2015. Wathen’s teams also won the Mid-SouthConferencetournamentin2005,2006and2008.HerteamshavebeentotheMSCtournamentfinalsineightofher13seasons. Theyear2015hasbeenoneforthebooks.Havingsometimesfivefreshmeninthestartinglineup,WathenhasledherteamtohersixthMSCregularseasonchampionship,theprogram’sfirst-everNAIAOpeningRoundchampionshipandalsotheirfirstWorldSeriesappearance. DuringWathen’stenure,shehasbeennamedMSCCoachoftheYearsixtimes(2005,2006,2007,2009,2013and2015).FourofherplayershavebeennamedMSCPlayeroftheYear,threeothershavebeennamedMSCPitcheroftheYearacombinedfourtimes,andhascoachedthreeMSCFreshmenoftheYear.

She was also second inERA(1.52).FreshmanteammateNeelyQuintwasnamedfirst-teamAll-MSCandisrightbehindDeckerwithanERAof1.65.Opponentshit.240offthefreshmanfromBrockport,Illgoodforseventhintheconference.Quintwasalsothirdininningspitched per game (5.80) and total innings pitched (156.2)andalsotiedwithDeckerforaMSClead,19 wins.

TWO PITCHERS - 38 WINS

Campbellsville’s trek to a 38-9 record and a 4-seed inthe2015NAIASoftballWorldSerieshasplayedoutinthreeparts,butnotbefore20gameswerecancelled due to cold or rain. First,therewasapre-conferenceschedulethatsawayoungLadyTigerteamgo14-5againstsometop-linecompetitionattheNAIALeadoffClassicandattheGulfShoresInvitational. ThentherewastheheartoftheMid-South ConferenceschedulethatsawCUdefeatthenNo.2LindseyWilsonCollegethreeoffourgames.AfterlosingtoLindseyonMarch22inthefinalgameofafour-gameseries,Campbellsvillewentona 19-gamewinstreakandwonitsfirstoutright regular-seasonconferencechampionshipsince2009.ButthentheLadyTigerssufferedthroughaswoon,losingthreeofsixbeforebeingbouncedfromtheMSCTournamentandthenbeingplacedintheBeaufortBracketoftheNAIAOpeningRound.AfterlosingitsfirstgameinHardeeville,S.C.,CUthenwentonafour-gamewinstreaktosealabidtoSioux City, Iowa.

LTS HEADS TO FIRST-EVER WORLD SERIES

Youthhasbeenservedonthisyear’sLadyTigerteamasfourfreshmenhaveplayedsignificantrolesintheteam’soffensivesuccess.Attimesplayingasmanyasfivefirst-yearplayers(includingpitcherNeely Quint), coach Shannon Wathen has worked her magic juggling a lineup while dodging injuries. Mid-SouthConferenceFreshmanoftheYearJacquelineRoofleadstheteaminseveraloffensive categories, including batting average (.363), hits (49), and home runs (9). Her eight stolen bases and 35runsscoredarealsogoodforsecondandher34RBIsaregoodenoughforthird.RoofhasreceivedamplesupportfromfellowfreshmanBriannaScottwho is second on the team in batting average (.336),firstinrunsscored(41),tiedforsecondinhits (42), leads the team with 10 doubles and 77 total bases. HaileySzpila,alsoafreshman,has36RBIsand 63 total bases to go along with seven homers. RebeccaMillercaughteveryinningintheOpeningRoundrunbecauseofaninjurytosophomore Markie Smith. Miller has seen action in 46 games as either a catcher or designated player. She’s added 35 hits.

FOUR FRESHMAN MAKE IMPACTS ON OFFENSE

Upperclassmen Kristin and Erin Benton lead the rookiesonandoffthefield.ThetwinsfromFlaherty,Ky.haveaccountedfor177ofheadcoachShannon Wathen’s 468 wins (38 percent). Kristin, a 2014 NAIAAll-American,gotofftoaslowstartin2015buthascomeonasoflate-hittingsafelyin 13-of-20gamessinceApril11.Her40RBIsalsoleadtheLadyTigers.Erin,whoisjustminutesyounger than Kristin, was named Second-Team All-MSCforthefirsttimeinhercareer,hitting.276,fourhomerunsanddrivingin23runs.Thetwinshavestartedinall47gamesforCampbellsvillein2015,alongwithfreshman1BHaileySzpila.

BENTON TWINS LEAD LADY TIGERS

CampbellsvillewiggleditswayintotheTop10forthefirsttimeinprogramhistoryonTuesday,April7,whentheLadyTigerscameinatNo.9inthefourthregular-seasoneditionofthe2015NAIASoftballCoaches’ Top 25 Poll. TheLadyTigershavebeenmakingasteadyclimb up the rankings list since the preseason when they received nine voting points. In the regular- seasonrankings,CUhasrisenfrom24thto19th,19th to 12th, 12th to ninth, ninth to eighth and eighthtoseventh.Inthefinalregularseasonpole,theLadyTigersremainedatNo.7eventhough beingeliminatedfromtheMSCTournamentearly.CU picked up 462 votings points - the third most in LTShistory.

AfterlosingitsfirstgameoftheBeaufortOpeningRound,Campbellsvillewonfourconsecutiveelimi-nationgamesandcarriedawayitsfirst-evertriptothe NAIA World Series. TheLadyTigershelda3-1leadintothetopoftheseventhagainstRioGrande(Ohio),butcouldnot hold that advantage and lost 4-3 in the opener. TheremainderoftheOpeningRoundprovidedsomeofCU’smostdramaticsoftballoftheseason. AfterbeatingIndianaWesleyan5-1initsfirst elimination game, a game in which Neely Quint and VictoriaDeckerheldtheWildcatshitless,CUgotintoanothernip-and-tuckbattlewithRioGrande,eventually winning, 3-2. It was a run-scoring single inthefifthbyKristinBentonthatprovidedthe difference. Quintpickedupbothwinsinthefirsttwo eliminationgames,oneinreliefofDeckerandtheotheronatwo-hitteragainstRioGrandethatsetupthefirstchampionshipmatchupwithhost— UniversityofSouthCarolinaBeaufort. That’swhenfreshmanJacquelineRoofcaughtfire.Shewas6-for-10withtwohomerunsandfiveRBIsinthe6-5(12innings)and7-2winsovertheSand Sharks. Goingintothebottomofthe12thinning, Hailey Szpila worked a one-out walk and Kendyl Ahrensreachedonaninfieldsinglesettingupthefireworks.SeniorErinBentonsingledtoleftfieldtoplateSzpilaforthegame-winner,forcingthefinalgame. Deckerpitchedtoallbuttwobattersinthe 12-inninggamevs.USCBeaufort,throwingatotalof172pitches-123strikesand49balls. The championship game was all Campbellsville. CU never trailed, scoring three times in the third, bolsteredbyJacquelineRoof’sleadoffhomerun. ThreeofCU’sfivefreshmenstarterscameupbigattheplate.Roofwas2-for-4withthreeRBIsandscoredtwice;BriannaScottwas2-for-2witharunscored;andRebeccaMiller,whocaughtall19inningsinthetwogamestoday,was1-for-3withanRBI. Thefourthfreshman-Quint-wonher19thgamein 24 decisions and worked her way around a nine-hitter while striking out two. She stranded nine run-ners and had the bases loaded with two outs in the thirdandthefourthinningsbutworkedoutofthejam. Campbellsvilleputthegameoutofreachwitha four-runfifth,aidedbytwoUSCBeauforterrorsandthree CU hits.
