Peace Council Spotlight Page

The Peace Congregational Service Groups are an important contributing part of the service

ministry within our church family. During the past month we have celebrated the lives of several

of our members of our congregation. A special thank you goes out to all who helped make the

fellowship/sharing hours memorable for all. Times spent with both our tears and laughter is im-

portant to healing the hurts many have felt recently.

A work group list has been included in this newsletter. If you wish to serve and are able to con-

tribute in this area and your name is not on one of the three group lists, contact Sandy at the

church office.

**********

The Wish List is found on the north wall of the fellowship area by the church library and offices.

If you wish to add an item to the list, do so and the council will consider the purchase/project.

Memorial monies may be used to fund wish list requests. The Wish List contains items now such

as library shelving, automatic door opener, water fountain etc.

If you wish to contribute to the memorial fund(s) at church, please indicate on your check/gift

where you would like to designate those monies. In the past five years memorial monies have

been used to update the sound system in the church, purchase window blinds, purchase the metal

cross sculpture at the church entrance, purchase the lights outside the building, contribute to the

parking lot fund and add to the Berheim Scholarship fund.

A recent memorial from the Kloos family has been used to purchase six new round tables for our

fellowship room.

Pastor Matthew, Sandy and your council members will do the due diligence regarding those re-

quests/purchases and make recommendations prior to any purchase.

Completed

The carpet cleaning project has been completed during the last days of September.

Thank you to Lee, Tom, Leon and Jeff for their work on the Parking Lot Project!

The approved August Church Council meeting minutes are included within the body of this

newsletter. Direct any questions you may have to Pastor Matthew or to your council members.

Remember the council is your voice.

On Sunday, October 11th, 2015 at 6:00 pm, the Barrett C & C will be hosting our annual Newcomer’s Supper at the Barrett Community Center.

We are looking for items to include in our Welcome Wagon bags and door prizes. We have a list of 13 newcomers. If you can provide items (which is a wonderful advertising opportunity), please let me know and I will come pick them up.

We’re hoping you will join us for supper that evening – it’s potluck so if you can bring a salad, a casserole, or a dessert, let me know – and maybe lend a hand in set up, serving, or clean up.

Thank you in advance for you help!

October WELCA is on Wednesday, October 7th at 1:00pm. We will be having our annual “Book Club” meeting. We invite and encourage all women to come and share a favorite book they have read—or just listen.

Lutheran Disaster Response

Recently, responses have included the Nepal Earthquake, Middle East and Refugee Crisis, California Wildfires and Chile Earthquake. Please keep all those affected by these disasters in your prayers.

On October 25th, Peace Church will be giving Spark Bibles to our 3rd graders (and those who have not yet received theirs) and Spark Bible Storybooks to our Kindergarteners during church services. We invite all parents to attend to present these to their children.

I have incredible news! The ELCA Malaria Campaign just reached its fundraising goal of $15 million! Thank you for being a part of this monumental milestone and helping us protect countless lives from this preventable, treatable disease. We couldn’t have done it without you! Five years ago ELCA members, congregations and synods came together, dreamed big with our Lutheran companion churches and partners, and set out to raise $15 million for malaria programming. Today we celebrate all that we have accomplished together. Working with our Lutheran companions and partners in 13 African countries, we have brought about lasting change. But our work is not over. While the ELCA Malaria Campaign will officially come to an end on Jan. 31, 2016, our commitment to ending deaths from this disease will not. In the coming years, support to our companions and partners to address malaria will come through gifts to ELCA World Hunger, which has a long history of supporting health-related work. Without you, none of this would have been possible. Thank you for your prayers, your partnership and your generosity. Together in Christ’s service,

Stewardship of the Good News

Why Lutheran? It’s a question that I try to

remind myself to ask myself, and with

October being the home of “Reformation Day”

it’s a great reminder to get back to the basics.

It’s a great question, and the answer matters

deeply. Unfortunately, it’s not a question we

ask very often at all. Why Lutheran?

I think my number one reason that I’m a

Lutheran is because it’s big enough to include

even me. Too many times the Church

(in general) closes its doors to people.

Someone’s not perfect enough, doesn’t believe

the exact same way, thinks too much, questions

too much, lives a certain way, is the ‘wrong’

whatever, you name it. But the Evangelical

Lutheran church of which we claim heritage

here at Peace flings the doors wide open and

works to tear down the barriers we as humans

inflict on connecting with God. It means I can

ask the questions and learn from people I

disagree with – even on important matters –

because by listening, I can learn more about

the God who created and sustains every

breath for all of us.

For me, being Lutheran is about believing

in the big story of

faith found in the

Bible. It is my story,

the story of my

neighbors, and

God’s story of how

he meets us in our

brokenness and

walks

alongside us. That big book tells me how God

provides for me, how God puts up with my

stubbornness, how much of my complaining

God can take, and the kind of abundant life

God hopes for me.

For me, being Lutheran means we recognize

that God is working in this world at this very

second, and we are called to be part of “thy will

be done” on earth now.

I get to live out the hope and love of God,

sharing forgiveness and my possessions,

bringing healing and comfort to people who are

hurting.

For me, being Lutheran means trusting that

God isn’t a “Man with a Plan” to fix everything,

but instead is willing to live, rejoice, mourn,

suffer, and even die with us when we are in utter

despair. A God whose best image isn’t an old

man on a throne in the sky or a triumphant

soldier coming home from war, but a pierced

man, dying on a cross for his friends AND for

the ones who hung him there.

Being Lutheran isn’t something that just

happens on a Sunday morning or when I’m

praying, but also when I’m grocery shopping, or

talking to people, or raising my kids, or mowing

my lawn (when I actually get to it!), or going for

a walk, or being a husband. Belief in God is not

separable from my every-moment life, faith

permeates every part of who I am, because God

permeates every part of who I am.

But most of all, being Lutheran means I

acknowledge that I need God. For all my best

efforts, I still can’t get things right on a con-

sistent basis. I need God, because I also con-

tribute to the brokenness that surrounds me.

For me, being Lutheran is trusting that

this God who I put my faith in came (and keeps

coming) FOR ME.

Saved by Grace alone, Faith alone, and Scripture

alone,

~Pastor Matthew
