(ICD-10 is the International Classifi-cation of Diseases-10th Version-ClinicalModification. It is designed for classifyingand reporting diseases in all health caresettings. It replaces ICD-9 that was imple-mented 45 years ago.)

“We want to thank everyone for their

countless hours of testing, design and im-plementation in making this importantchange,” said Ron Skinner, System HIMDirector. “It was an important effort thatensures systems are updated correctly.

“Since Borgess Health is a HIPAA-Cov-ered entity, we were required to convert toICD-10,” Skinner said. “Clinicians, codersand staff across Borgess Health will beimpacted by the change that provides for

more than 68,000 unique medical diag-noses, compared to only 14,000 codesavailable in the ICD-9 system.”

“Because there are many more choices toselect under the ICD-10 code set,” saidJohn McElwee, Chief Financial Officer,Borgess Medical Group, “associates nowplay an even more vital role in assistingour providers in capturing all relevantfacts related to a patient’s care.”
