OBAT Helpers: At a Glance Dedicated to transforming lives through education and empowerment, U.S. based 501(c)3 OBAT Helpers (tax ID#: 47- 0946122) is proud to be working since 2004 to serve this forgotten population, commonly known as stranded Pakistanis, Biharis or Urdu speaking people, living in makeshift camps throughout Bangladesh since the 1971 civil war. Background: More than three generations continue to live in 8 x 10 ft. spaces as these forgotten people suffer in abject poverty with no access to basic amenities. Working tirelessly to alleviate this situation, OBAT Helpers has been instrumental in providing opportunities of growth and transformation to this community. Starting by providing assistance in just one camp, it now serves more than 45 camps through 6 different cities in Bangladesh in the following ways: EDUCATION & TRAINING: OBAT serves more than 5,000 students, offering nearly 900 scholarships at different levels of education along with 6 computer training centers, 7 tutoring centers, 8 schools, 34 preschools, 2 education programs for working children and Arabic education programs in 3 cities. SELF-EMPOWERMENT: Over 1,600 families have been empowered through our micro-finance program. HEALTH: Almost 10,000 people are assisted annually through two stationary health clinics and various pop-up clinics. 500-1,000 cataract surgeries are conducted every year. INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT & FAMILY ASSISTANCE: OBAT provides financial assistance to the sick, elderly and the widows in the camp communities. Installation of deep and shallow tube wells to provide clean drinking water to about 23,000 people.
