Te Romanian Vanatori de Munte (mountain hunters) units were created in 1916 and represent the elite troops o theRomanian in antry. At the outbreak o the war with the SovietUnion on 22 June 1941, the Mountain Corps consisted o

our brigades (1st to 4th) made up o twelve groups (1st to12th) each with two battalions. Tere were 24 battalions (1 st to 24 th) out o which the rst sixteen were very well trainedand armed active units. Te rest (17 th to 24 th) were ormeda ter the general mobilization and were o lower quality.

A mountain brigade consisted o six Vanatori de Munte battalions, one mountain artillery group (1 or 2 battalionso 75mm or 76.2mm mountain guns and one battalion o 100 mm mountain howitzers) and one mountain pioneer

battalion.Te mountain troops had a higher level o training andpro essionalism than the regular in antry. Te initiative atbattalion level was more developed. Tey were well suited to

ghting in di cult terrain, but they lacked su cient artil-lery, which made them vulnerable in the open terrain o theRussian steppe.

In 1941 the Mountain Corps was made up o the 1st, 2nd and 4th Mountain Brigades. Te 3 rd Mountain Brigade wasstationed on the rontier with Hungary. At the end o the1941 campaign, the 2nd Mountain Brigade was brought back to Romania and the 1 st and 4th Mountain Brigades remainedin Crimea.

During the winter, the 2 nd and 3rd Mountain Brigade werecompletely rearmed. Te old rst world war artillery pieces

were replaced with modern guns. Te 1 st and 4th MountainBrigades, which were at the ront, received eld guns insteado mountain guns. Because they were involved in the rstsiege o Sevastopol, they were rein orced with two 100mmhowitzer battalions.

On 15 March 1942, the mountain and cavalry brigadesbecame divisions, though actual size o the units didn’tchange, the establishment o the mountain brigades already put them on par with Italian and Hungarian divisions. In

July 1942, the 2nd and 3rd Mountain Divisions were sent tothe ront to take part in the campaigns in the Caucasus andthe Kuban regions.

During the winter o 1942/1943, the 1st

Mountain Division was also modernized. Te 4 th Mountain Division never gotto replace its old guns be ore it was disbanded in November1944. A ter the battle o Stalingrad, the 18th In antry Division was trans ormed into the 18th Mountain Division. Its regiments were renamed mountain groups (18th, 90th and 92nd) and the battalions received new numbers (27th to35th). Te 1 st, 2nd and 3rd Mountain Divisions retreated intoCrimea and the 4th Mountain Division was joined with the24th In antry Division to orm the 4/24th In antry Division.

In May 1944, only 60% o the mountain troops in Crimea were evacuated be ore the Soviets had completely retaken the

peninsular.

Romania’s huge army was drawn rom the rural peasant class,o cered by the aristocratic upper class, and disciplined by NCO’s using 18th century style corporal punishment. Men

were regularly beaten or minor breaches in regulation anddiscipline. Te separation o men, NCO’s, and o cers even

went as ar as meals that were supplied in three qualities, with o cers, naturally, getting the best. Te o cers werealso responsible or the training o their own units. Tis ledto a great variation in the quality o troops’ combat prepared-ness. Te distant relationship between the o cers and theirlargely illiterate men combined with the harsh conditions o army li e, and sometimes poor training, led to mixed levelso per ormance and morale in the eld.

o re ect the variable quality o the men and o cers’ re-lationship and per ormance, Romanian platoons are rated

as Regular or Elite. A ter deployment, but be ore the rst turn, roll a die or each Romanian platoon and independent Warrior teams. Consult the Peasant Army table to determine their Skill and Motivation ratings. Platoons held in Reserves do not roll until they arrive.

d efend the h oMeland Tough the Romanian in antryman may have mixed treat-ment rom his o cers and NCOs, once in the thick o the

ghting he would o ten ght tenaciously when con rontedby the enemy. Tey were not interested in invading Russia or conquering the world, but to simply ght stubbornly tode end what they already had.

When Romanian platoons test their Motivation toCounterattack in assaults, you may re-roll the die and apply the re-rolled result to all Romanian platoons that ailed onthe original roll.

f rench d octrine

Te Romanian troops are trained in the French doctrine o trench war are. Teir operational plan is to make a shortdeliberate advance under cover o massed artillery re, then

orti y their position to hold it while the artillery comes upto repeat the process. While the advance is slow, it is sure and

will eventually result in the de eat o the enemy.

Once entrenched, Romanian in antry set up cross re posi-tions or every weapon allowing them to take any attack inen lade.

c entral f ire c ontrol

Like the US Army, the Romanians were great ollowers o French doctrine during the 1920’s and 1930’s and their artil-lery methods re ect this.

Romanian Company Command teams cannot act as spotting teams or Artillery Bombardments.

When a Romanian artillery battery that has a Staf team res an Artillery Bombardment, any other artillery batter-ies with Staf teams may join it be ore rolling to Range Inand re as a single combined Artillery Battery.

MoUntaineers Romanian mountain in antryman are trained as moun-taineers. Tey can scale clifs that are impassable to normalin antry.

Romanian Mountain In antry teams, Man-packed Gunteams are all Mountaineers, see page 61 o the rulebook.

p ack MUles Mountain troops were issued with light guns that couldbe broken into smaller loads and carried on pack horses ormules to move on the narrow mountain trails and terrainthey are trained to ght on.

Gun teams carried by Pack Mule teams are Mountaineers, see page 61 o the rulebook. Pack Mule teams are ransport teams. Pack Mule teams carry Gun teams as Passengers and the Gun team is removed rom the table while it is carried by the Pack Mule team.
