Vigésimo-Noveno Domingo De Tiempo Ordinario

Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Have you ever had a conversation with someone you thought you knew, discovered you didn’t know them at all, and ended up becoming good friends? Have you ever walked into the wrong classroom and ended up signing up for that class instead of the one you originally intended? There are stories to go with each of these situations. They are true accounts of life-changing “accidents,” shared with me by students through the years. King Cyrus of Persia, circa 538 B.C., could relate. Here’s a guy who knew nothing about the Jews or their extraordinary history. He had just smashed the great Bab-ylonian army and driven out their kings. This world con-queror did a quick census of the population of the land he had just taken over and saw that he had a large number of Jewish communities that had been marched out of Judah during the terrifying siege of King Nebuchadnezzar fifty years earlier. Almost as an afterthought he said to them, “Go home now. Take all the treasures which were stolen from your Temple when Nebuchadnezzar came through. Rebuild your lives and your Temple. And pray for the Royal Family and for me.” That’s how this Gentile king came to be called “God’s anointed” by the prophet Isaiah. He accidentally stumbled into salvation history and changed it forever. How could he know he was sending God’s Chosen People back to re-build a land that would, in time, be the home of Jesus of Nazareth? How, indeed, can you know that God is working through you to bring good? Invite God to use you as a vessel. Then prepare to take your place in history next to the Great King Cyrus. This group is for adults who are interested in learning more about the Sunday readings, in a casual and re-laxed atmosphere. We meet each Sunday during our Children’s Faith Formation time, from 10:15 to 11:15, for an informal but informative discussion on the Scripture and its meaning for our contemporary lives. There is no charge, and coffee is always served. Best of all, there is no homework! Come join us! ALL SAINTS/ALL SOULS DAY All Saints Day is Wednesday, November 1. It is a Holy Day of Obligation. Mass times for this day are at 8:30 am (Bilingual, School Mass), Noon and 6:00 pm. This year we will also be offering a Mass for All Souls (Commemoration of All the Faithfull Departed). This Mass will be offered at 7:00 pm. PLEASE NOTE: There will be no 8:30 am Mass on that day! Come and join us as we remem-ber all who have gone before us in death this past year. We will announce all those names in remembrance at this mass. We will have a special table for you to have the op-portunity to place a picture of a loved one that has gone before us, and if there is a family member present they will be invited up to light a candle next to the table with pic-tures. COMMUNITY MINISTRY needs Canned or Dried Beans for the month of October. You can place your donation in the basket in the entrance of the church. Thank you for your generosity!

ANNUAL FALL CARNIVAL Mark your calendars and make plans

to bring the whole family to our annual fall carnival on Saturday, October 28, immediately follow-ing the 4:00 pm Mass. We will

have carnival games, an Excalibur bounce house with a slide and bas-

ketball, and of course, prizes! We will also be selling hot dogs, chips, Frito Pie in a bag, and bottled water in case you are hungry. Wristbands will be sold at the door for $10, which includes unlimited games and turns in the bounce house. Food tickets are $5 each. And of course, we will have the Trunk or Treat Street for the kids, which is free! We are tak-ing donations for the candy to distribute, so if you would like to help with your candy donation, please drop it in the containers in the vestibule after the Masses. We are also in search of folks who would like to enter their decorated cars in the Trunk or Treat. If you are interested in entering your vehicle, please contact Debby Gomez at 303-478-5279. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place, so have fun! All proceeds from this event will go to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund

Wanted: Choir Members

We would love to have more singers in our choirs, ei-ther at 9:00 am. or 11:30 am Masses. For the 9:00 am Mass, we warm up at 8:15 on Sunday mornings in the community room, and stay to practice after mass for about half an hour. In the near future we hope to add some rehearsals at another time in preparation for Advent and Christmas. If you’d like to sing at 11:30, you should be comforta-ble reading and singing Spanish, since that mass is mostly Spanish. We also need singers for the Christ-mas mass choirs—not such a big commitment. While the ability to read music is always nice, with YouTube, it isn’t necessary. If you’d like to sing with us at any of these times, please come up and see Frances after mass, or send an email to [email protected]. Phone: 831-277-3632

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK

Matthew 22:15-21 How do you react to others who try to challenge you or trick you for your beliefs? Isaiah 45:1, 4-6 Cyrus was the king of Persia, who God "anointed" to de-feat the Babylonians and to release Israel from captivity in Babylon. Why do you think God chose a foreign king to rescue Israel? 1 Thessalonians 1:1-5b Today's reading is the opening words to the earliest of Paul's letters, First Thessalonians, written in AD 50. How does Paul speak of the Trinity--Father, Son, and Holy Spir-it?

LIVE THE LITURGY If the coin belongs to Caesar, then give it to him. Paying taxes is often unpleasant, but requires little self-investment. We know that a portion of our income must go back to the government, but what then, exactly, be-longs to God? God does not seek our financial resources. What belongs to God is something that we sometimes want to keep to ourselves or divide in different places. What belongs to God is our hearts. We owe everything to God, even our very being. Without God we are nothing. God patiently continues to tell the world: "I am the LORD and there is no other, there is no God besides me." How do we unite the varied allegiances of our hearts into one under God?

HOLY NAME NEWS Congratulations to the winners of the 50-50 Raffle Drawing held on October 8, 2017: $100 JL Rodriguez $ 50 Don Byrne $ 50 Keith and Pam Cruz The next drawing will be held on Sunday, November 12 after the 11:30 am Mass.

Dear Friends in the Lord, The mission statement at the Augustine Institute here in Greenwood Village, Colorado is “Our mission is to help Catholics understand, live, and share their faith. All of our programs and offerings, including our video-based study programs, FORMED, our Graduate School of Theology, as well as our books and Lighthouse Talks help our Apostolate reach souls for Christ.” You will see in our vestibule a ki-osk with different resources, both in English and Spanish. These items are from the Augustine Insti-tute for us to use. The kiosk was donated to us from Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Church. A sepa-rate anonymous donor has generously provided us with over $200 worth of resources both in English and Spanish. I invite you, in our quest here at St. Rose of Lima to be life-long learners and equipped disciples for the proclamation of the gospel, to con-sider using these resources to help you, and us, grow in our understanding of the faith we profess together. These resources will help all of us contin-ue to improve in the living out and sharing of our faith. There are suggested donation labels for the different items. Please consider helping out as sug-gested, so we are able to sustain this fantastic con-tinuing education opportunity. God bless you. Fr. Nick

WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED Question: To solve the shortage of priests in this country, why can't we bring in priests from other countries where they have enough? Answer: This is a common question that makes one wonder, where exactly is this country where there are so many priests? The place does not exist, but it raises some interesting issues, including people's attitudes towards priests. Firstly, diocesan priests are ordained for a dio-cese to serve the needs of their own people. Much of their ministry is based on a knowledge of cultural norms, customs and values. They are called from their local communities to serve local needs. They are not all foreign missionaries. Secondly, Americans often as-sume wrongly that people of other nations are anxious to come to the US. Priests, like any of us, want to be close to family and friends and do not necessarily see us as having the land of wonder and opportunity. Third-ly, the priesthood is changing and people need to adapt. In the short-term, things will be difficult. There may not always be a Mass in your parish every day or even every week. In the long run, the Holy Spirit will have to show us what we are to do. Fourth, ministry is everyone's responsibility, so get involved! Finally, show your appreciation and concern for the priests we do have. They have a tough job and it is not getting any easier.
