Executive Updates

The Board and our events team at Composition have been working frantically over the past few days to finalise the details of this years Iris Awards and Infocus Convention, which was scheduled to happen in Wellington at the Amora Hotel in August this year. Due to a last minute notification from the Amora Hotel that they are now unable to honour our booking due to earthquake damage, we have had to look for an alternate venue at short notice (not an easy thing to achieve).

Unfortunately Wellington has nothing suitable or available for this year and as a result we have had to look outside the region. Fortunately Composition has found a venue that suits both our budget and requirements in the Rotorua Energy Events Centre. The timing of the events is the same as before with the Iris Awards starting on Thursday 31 July through to Saturday 2 August and the Infocus Convention from the 3rd to the 4th of August and the Gala dinner on the evening of Monday the 4th of August.

We apologise to anyone who has already made arrangements for Wellington but unfortunately this was out of our control. Rotorua itself is easy to access for all of those in the North Island and has a fantastic venue in which to run our events.

Start your preparation now and make this a great celebration of Professional Photography.

Sincerely,

Mike Langford - NZIPP President Hon FNZIPP, GMNZIPP, Hon F AIPP, MAIPP

MARCH 2014Executive Updates

Sometimes it’s hard to think of relevant stuff to talk about, and most of what I have to say is as I live it. At the recent policy and planning meeting your board had with all your regional chairs it came to my turn as portrait director to state my “ report “. Under the pump the thought came to me about one of our biggest challenges for us today, that is our very relevance to the market. Our actual validity to exist at all as professional image makers. Once upon a time we were “special “. We could blind with science and claim all sorts of skills separating us from the masses. Today the gap between them and us in the gear required has virtually disappeared. So what do we have to do?

We have to be better than “them” that’s what. We have to be the best we can be. Better than them. Not just as good as you can do. We have to provide a product as good as it can be given. Whatever technology is there we have to have it, whatever techniques, we have to know them. This is a bottom line. However two shoots today reminded me of my contribution that they cannot match. My experience and professionalism. As we often learn in our craft it’s not just about the capture. Clients turn up with all their personal “baggage“. We have to be honed enough to glean it. My first client was a very successful business woman but also over six feet tall, and confronted with having to be photographed, all her negative thoughts about this aspect of herself became evident.

My job, our job, was to gently and genuinely show her what an awesome woman she was. As we know many people are confident in their field of expertise, but lose all of it in front of us. I flirted a bit and flattered a bit. We had fun and being able to show the back of the camera (which I never used to do) gave her a belief. I got her to look a little bit hot and cheeky mixed with what was needed. I even chose her clothing, and as I knew some outfit in New York were the recipients of the images, I kept them clean and urban. She left rapt. She was easy!!

The next sitting was a challenge even for someone as long in the tooth as me. A couple in their sixties walked in with the woman welling up in tears. “I’ve ruined all my daughters’ wedding pictures, I always look terrible in photos and we are going to London for our other daughters’ wedding and I’m going to ruin them as well.“ By now she was almost blubbing. Holy s..t I thought. My stock reply was “well we all sometimes think that about ourselves“ looking to the husband for a nod of approval. There was none to be had. “ Nah, shes right she always looks terrible.“ Holy s..t I thought again. Right lets deal with it.

I got her talking about other stuff that got her smiling again and as she was doing so cajoled her a little about how actually gregarious and natural she really was. Now a lot of photographers leave too much responsibility on their subjects to come up with their own poses and body shapes, and it’s not good because they don’t have a clue what to do. Luckily, because that’s our job, I do. I asked her “what’s most people photography really all about?” She gave the perfect answer. “It’s about love. “ “That’s right” I said, “all you need to know is what to actually do to always feel confident in front of a camera.”

I showed her what dropping a hip does to a woman’s shape. Being at an angle to the camera, and a couple of different things to do with her hands, always being straight in the lower back ( elegance). Use these simple things as a que to feeling great and then all that’s left is loving the one your with. I kid you not she looked great in every shot and in the end because the husband was always tense about her feelings I had to give him a rev to lift his game!

I couldn’t get her out of the place in the end and got the biggest hug from a client I have ever had. Now that’s validity. That’s what we bring to the table. On top of everything else we must give people an absolute confidence about us and them. I’m off to my mum’s for dinner feeling real proud about what we do and the difference we can make in peoples lives.

MARCH 2014Executive Updates

Every year around this time I ask myself the question of why I do what I do. It happens amid a string of late nights, not enough sleep and the sunlight being replaced by the glow of my computer screen far too often.

Then, I just have to think of a few stories to warm my heart back up, and put my thoughts back on track.

A little handful of true stories ….

Eight years ago when we booked the wedding of Racheal and Andrew I never imagined I would see them so often. Racheal is the epitome of a strong woman. She lost one arm many years ago and is an incredible paralympian skier and multi gold medalist. Since their first shoot those years ago I’ve photographed Racheal eight times. I’m constantly in awe of her who with one less limb than most wrangles three gorgeous children and is twice the person of so many others. I feel empowered by just being in her presence.

Seven years ago we photographed the wedding of Quintin and Vanessa. Vanessa had battled with brain tumors and had been told just before the wedding she was in the finally in the clear. We created a beautiful album for them. Three years on we had a call from Quintin to tell us Vanessa had just passed away, her funeral had not yet been held but he felt so compelled to call us since the album we had created meant so very much to them both.

Rebecca and Vincent were married at a time that Vincent’s mother was very sick, he told us before the wedding that she may not make it to the day. She did, but only just as she passed away just days after. We made extra effort in capturing lots photos of Vincent’s mum that day, candid moments, talking, laughing, hugging. Rebecca and Vincent told us they were hands down the most amazing photos in existence of his mum, that represented her kind soul.

Last year I photographed Mark and Janene, a wonderful couple who had been childhood sweethearts from the age of 14 before life took it’s course leading them off on separate paths. Thirty something years later they were reunited and soon became inseparable. Over and over again that day everyone said that was a wedding that should have happened years ago, the wedding was like a giant reunion of friends. The happiness and joy was infectious.

What stories have you shared? As photographers many of us wear our hearts on our sleeve and we will all have shared in people precious life stories, we capture joy, excitement, sadness, love, wonder, affection…..

What we do is important, it’s special, it’s empowering. I love that we have the great privilege to meet a diversity of people and that we get to share their moments and have them open their hearts to us.

It can be too easy sometimes to downplay or underestimate just how important we are. But we should never do this! When you are truly passionate about what you do it radiates from you, almost as if it seeps from the pores of your skin and your clients can’t possibly help but take notice and tune into your way of thinking.

Know that what you create is bespoke and the value has often not yet fully been perceived – however it will be treasured beyond price one day. And for that reason the job you do will always be an extremely important one.

Believe in what you do. Believe in your heart that it is valuable. For it’s true value and worth has not yet reached it’s pinnacle, but someday, if not today - it will.

MARCH 2014Executive Updates

The Fine PrintThere’s a plethora of photographic competitions around the world offering amateur and professional photographers the opportunity to earn accolades, including our own annual Iris Awards. Deciding on which competition(s) you enter (if any) is an entirely personal choice, with the reasons for entering the various awards perhaps very different for different people.

Now, I know myself the benefits that can be gained through photography awards and I wouldn’t wish to discourage anyone from entering awards and competitions by what I write. However, it may be a timely reminder that not all competitions are created equal, and not all competitions are perhaps what they seem on the surface.

This was highlighted recently by a NZ photographer, concerned enough to put pen to paper (email actually) and voice their concerns to the NZIPP.

Following initial enthusiasm for entering the (un-named) international photography competition, the photographer decided to undertake a little research. On the surface this widely established international competition appeared very prestigious – after all it had a very long list of high profile judges, and opportunity for entrants to have their work promoted internationally. What was discovered, however, were several forums denouncing the competition (and other similar ones) as a scam. Evidence seemed to be in abundance, with many of the forum postings describing contact with jurors on the list with subsequent responses that the presumed jurors knew nothing about the competition. Does suspicion increase when known that the competition, run by UK residents working in the UK, is operating through a USA exchange? Or, that the millions (and millions) of dollars are earned annually through entry fees, from tens of thousands of entrants around the world, don’t result in any prize money?

While alarm bells are ringing, it’s not for me to say whether this particular competition is a scam or not, that will be determined following formal complaints to the UK National Fraud Authority. What I can say, with a little word of warning, is whatever competition you are considering entering, read the fine print and do your own homework to determine it’s authenticity.

In light of this situation being brought to our attention, please be assured that it is Honour’s desire is to run the NZIPP Iris Awards as a forum that represents honesty, legitimacy and transparency, and we hope that as New Zealand professional photographers this would remain your first choice of entry.

On behalf of the Honours Council, including: Ollie Dale, Blair Quax, Tony Stewart and Esther Bunning.

Kind Regards

Tell us what you want!!Times are changing, and we are very excited to tell you we have plans ahead to give ProReport a facelift!

As a NZIPP member and reader of ProReport this is YOUR online magazine. Your voice is valued, let it be heard as we want to be able to give you what you want.

During the month of March we’ll be asking NZIPP members to participate in a survey about ProReport and how you would like to see it evolve. Simply head along to a regional monthly meeting and you’ll be asked to complete a brief survey asking you how you’d like to see the ProReport of tomorrow to look, feel and function.

We want to know what articles you’d like us to bring to you, what you’d like us to talk about and we welcome feedback both good and bad so feel free to tell us if there is anything you don’t bother reading for fear of being bored to tears!

PLUS: Just by completing and returning the survey before March 31st you’ll go in the draw for a $20 Warehouse Stationery voucher. There is one for each region to be won!

If you’re unable to attend a regional NZIPP meeting during March please email your regional chairperson and they’ll happily send you a survey to complete. So go ahead, let your voice be heard and tell us what you want!

Change of destination – Rotorua here we come!! We wish to announce a change in venue and destination for the 2014 Epson / NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Judging and Infocus 2014 Conference.

The venue originally booked in Wellington sustained damage in the July earthquake last year, which required repair work to be undertaken before conferences could use the venue. We had been assured by management that it would be completed in March 2014. Unfortunately we have recently been advised that the venue won’t be reopening in time for our event in late July early August.

But we are delighted to now be holding our event at the Energy Event Centre, Rotorua. For those of you, who don’t know the venue, it’s a purpose built convention centre. Click here for more information on the centre.

Our sincere apologies to those who have made arrangements already, but hope you understand the unforeseen circumstance that have occurred.

Look forward to seeing you all in Rotorua from the 31st July - 5th August 2014!

Auckland/Northland Regional Meeting - Queensberry Tour & Pricing Discussion with Ian Baugh Venue: Queensberry, 13 Waikaukau Rd, Glenn Eden, Auckland Date: March 19th, 2014 Time: 4:30pm Non Members: $20

Auckland/Northland RegionMarch is already upon us, which means we are almost 1/4 of the way through 2014, with planning now well under way for this years meetings we are excited about the year ahead. Recently I attended the annual Policy & Planning meeting, this meeting is all about discussing both the short term and long term future of the NZIPP on a national level. And I have to say I couldn’t be more impressed by the calibre of people looking after our organisation, the NZIPP is in good hands, and I can see a bright future ahead.

On a regional level it was great to meet all the other regional chairs, and over the next few months we are going to work hard at sharing information and ideas on a regular basis across the all the regions. This will help us provide better meetings and more variety throughout the year. And what better way than a meet the neighbours meeting to get things started, what is that you ask. Let me explain, over the next few months the Auckland and Waikato regions are hosting a joint meeting. All NZIPP members will be welcome to come along for an overnight trip somewhere between Auckland and the Waikato, what better way to share photography stories over a glass of wine, or head out for some landscape photography with some of our fellow colleagues. As with all these things participation will be the key, the more the merrier.

On an Auckland level we are also excited about the future of our region, this year you should see some changes in the way we do things. Over the next few months we will be rolling out new initiatives to get things moving. We have lots of ideas and we will discuss these with you at our monthly meetings, also if any of you have ideas please let us know.

And finally our March meeting will be held at the Queensberry Bindery, we have a tour planned of their facilities followed by Ian Baugh who will talk to us about the financial side of running a photography business. Ian has been in the photographic industry for over 40 years and has a wealth of knowledge and experience. This meeting will benefit anyone who wants to make money from their photography. Whether you are an established photographer or new into the industry there will be something here for everyone.

Thanks,

Last weeks mini-workshop was well attended and by all accounts well received. Thanks must go to Stephen Goodenough (and his lovely model Lily) for sharing his techniques on location lighting.

After the times up attendees move to the next table until everyone has done a full circuit. It is expected that this would take a total of 90 minutes or so.

Otago/Southland RegionThis month in Queenstown we ran a half day Portrait business talk followed by a Portrait ‘Q’ workshop with wonderful, Russell Hamlet. Russell was in great form and the group left motivated to improve their businesses and their professionalism.

Here are some of Russel’s tips that I recorded:

• “Pick your business hero’s and look at what they are doing”, then apply this to your business.

• “To have a successful portrait business you also need to become a seller”.

• “Don’t think working class.”

• “Every business phone call you receive should be an excitement call.”

• “Eliminate the negatives and accentuate the positives.”

• “Educate and excite your clients”, let them know the value of a professional who delivers the complete photographic package.

• Photograph what the customer wants- Ask the right questions of them and plan the shoot to suit. Where are the photographs going to be seen? Who are they for? How big are the walls in your home? What colour are the walls?...As the client to photograph their walls with their iphone so you get an idea of what you can sell them.

• “Tummy in tits out.”lol

A professional Photographer is:

• Someone who knows and understands their product.

• Has full belief in their product and themselves.

• They are aware of how others ‘see’ them.

Thank you Russell for sharing your knowledge and time with us.

Industry NewsPROPOSED NEW TAX RULES FOR HOLDERS OF OFFSHORE SUPER SCHEMESA bill currently before parliament includes changes to the tax rules relating to foreign superannuation funds held by NZ residents. Due to the complexity of the existing rules, many New Zealand residents have been blissfully unaware that a tax obligation even existed.

In a move for which the IRD should be commended, this new proposed legislation is intended to simplify the way superannuation funds are to be taxed. As part of the changes the IRD are also proposing an amnesty for those who have not paid tax in the past on withdrawals from such schemes whereby a concessionary rate will apply.

The new rules will apply to NZ residents who acquired foreign superannuation schemes while they were non resident. It is important to note that these rules only apply to employer related super schemes and not government paid social security pensions as these are generally dealt with upon receipt.

In the future tax will be levied on lump sums drawn from the foreign super schemes. The longer you have been living in NZ the more tax you will have to pay when you either make a withdrawal or transfer your pension to NZ.

What this means is that the longer you leave your pension offshore the greater amount of tax you will have to pay when you eventually bring those funds back to NZ.

Withdrawals within the first 4 years after you become resident will not be taxable. Once this 4 year exemption period ends, the tax liability on a withdrawal will generally be calculated using a new “schedule method”. This method provides a particular fraction based on how long the person has been resident in NZ prior to the withdrawal.

If you transfer your super savings to a kiwisaver fund in NZ then you will be able to withdraw funds from the transferred amount to pay the tax liability arising.

Foreign super schemes have always been subject to NZ taxes. However, the IRD recognise that due to the existing rules being so complex, many people have inadvertently made cash withdrawals without accounting for tax and have filed tax returns without even advising the IRD of their investment in the foreign super scheme. So the IRD have introduced a concessionary rate where only 15% of the lump sum withdrawn from 1 January 2000 to 31 March 2014 is subject to tax – this is a simple option that is intended to encourage compliance before the introduction of the new rules.

To use this option you will need to return the 15% of the lump sum amount in your 2013/14 or 2014/15 tax returns. If you do not use the option to pay tax on 15% of the lump sum then the law as it was at the time the withdrawal was made will apply. The original due date for payment of tax will also still apply.

If you are a member of an overseas superannuation scheme and it has not been included in your tax returns in the past then please contact your advisors immediately to establish your position and options.
