We thought it was high time that members got to know a little more about Fiona, who is the nziPP administration extraordinaire (administration Officer is her official title!), read her profile on page 16.

i’ve been reflecting today on what i learnt after attending the aiPa’s imagenation conference in auckland over the weekend. To be honest i’m feeling slightly overwhelmed by the level of constant change in our industry. it seems that since the shift from film to digital last decade we’ve barely had time to catch our breath with technological change – let alone having to deal with all the economic and business environment changes.

What is clear to me is that to survive and thrive we do need to keep up with it. We do need to invest a significant amount of time and probably money in personal r&D. We need to understand Social media – both to market our business’s, and as a medium our clients will be using to market their business’s. We need to understand the fundamentals of motion capture using HD-DSLr technology. We need to understand the integration of Cgi into our imagery. We need to learn how to tell stories with a wider range of shots. We need to learn how to use software and hardware associated with all of the above. and finally we need to understand that if we neglect learning these things we will most likely be left behind – just as those photographers who ignored the original digital onslaught got left behind.

i don’t think it will be enough just to “play” with this stuff during our quiet times. We will need to actively set aside time each week to teach ourselves, and look for eVerY opportunity out there to gain more knowledge, be it online seminars or nziPP education events.

So with that in mind don’t be left behind by not attending infocus 2010 this year. registrations are now open. Don’t wait and see, with the attitude “a good job might come up” approach. Take the time out. invest in your future and make sure you are there. With over 100 other photographers and industry people attending, you will learn things that help keep you on top of all this change.

i’ve just spent two days attending aiPa’s image nation event in auckland, & now in its second year they lined up a range of speakers from new zealand & australia. The apathy of experienced professional photographers was evident with most at the event identifying themselves as either relative newcomers to the industry or students. Quite disappointing to see that professionals don’t value the opportunity to learn & grow their businesses. i paid good money to attend, so i won’t share all the juicy secrets but the following are a few observations from the weekend.

Screens are the future - that’s iPads, digital signage, digital editions of •magazines. Static mediums are in decline, motion/video is here and it will only get more important

engage new technology - that’s means mobile devices, DSLr video, social •media, using motion

Do personal work & reinvent yourself - develop new techniques•

Sometimes images don’t need to be pixel perfect, try using a Lumo •camera, Lensbaby, cell phone, or scan a polaroid.

We’re creative people, we need to be able to tell & craft stories, that’s why •our clients engage us in the first place, improve your story telling

never give “ballpark” prices - clients WiLL take ballpark figures & hold you •to it. Stop, think, get back to the client after careful consideration of the job

Stand out speakers for me were mike O’Sullivan, Creative Partner from ad agency Droga5; michael Hall, a landscape photographer with a very strong conviction towards raising awareness of global climate change through his imagery; nick Tressider, auckland based commercial photographer specializing in food, & Juliet Taylor, an advertising/fashion shooter from Sydney.

Jenny nichols, art Director for north & South magazine was very brave to present to a group of photographers. When asked about rates for photographers, she did mention that she hadn’t had a pay rise since the recession started. Should we feel sympathetic? Hell no. Photographers for aCP magazine titles haven’t had a pay rise since last century!

if i am honest not all speakers were my cup of tea, but that doesn’t matter. You can’t please all the people all the time. What is important is that there were speakers i did enjoy & who taught me a lot. i made some new friends & caught up with old ones. Well worth the $500 or so it cost all up for the weekend.

if you are now wishing you had learnt something last weekend, don’t fear. infocus is the largest annual professional photography event in new zealand & is just over two months away. book an early bird registration now & you get two days of education, inspiration, entertainment, networking & social experiences for under $300.

everyone who submitted for their Q’s in the last round will now have their submissions back, and the typed up feedback will be arriving shortly.

For some people it’s a cause for celebration and some blog skiting :-). For others it’s a time to analyse, regroup, reshoot, and start gearing up for the next one. To quote the mighty Jason mraz ‘i reckon it’s again my turn to win some or learn some’.

it was a real privilege to sit on the Q panel with gary Hewlett, Steve Sharp, Tracy Stamatakos, and Sarah beaufoy. We saw a huge range of work and some of the things that stood out were:

The benefit of getting at least one, hopefully more, qualified opinions •(sadly, your mum doesn’t usually count...sorry mum). ask them to think like a judge, and to be completely honest. The submissions that had been thoroughly critiqued (i asked most people when i rang) showed a higher level overall.

The importance of control - control of lighting, exposure (no blown out •highlights, detail present in shadows), and colour management. i’m not talking about that thing you do in High School english where you kill a poem by analysing it...rather it’s about communicating as clearly as possible. Controlling the technical elements means the viewer can clearly ‘read’ the story.

and finally the selection of images was a sticking point for some...•while the requirements say ‘at least 50 images’, there is no upper limit. maybe there should be? it was clear that the successful albums had a continuity and flow to the story. images were clearly chosen because they contributed to the story and the album was so much stronger for it. Less is more :-)

How best do we balance the pressures of self-employment and our desires for lifestyle? after all we are born to live, not born to work. The problem (generally) is the business model we as photographers inherit, which is trading time for money. We might be self-employed, but in reality we just own a job. This is not an efficient way of maximising returns unless we address it in a couple of ways.

The first and most obvious way is to charge as much as we can for the time we spend. i touched on that topic last month, so won’t dwell on it. but if your work is worthy and still you waver, give your self an uppercut and get on with it!!

The second is so easy, but almost all of you fret over it to the point of inaction, and for many stagnation. That is to replicate yourself, i.e get some bloody staff! and now i hear you say “Oh, but i don’t make enough money for me let alone someone else“.

You don’t have enough work because your doing everything yourself. How the hell can you look at your business effectively, market effectively with energy, and be a good husband or wife, if you’re answering the phone, doing all the consultations, shooting all the images, doing all the selling, and worst sin of all being stuck in front of that damn screen caught in the whirlpool of Photoshop. not to mention the accounts, bill paying, getting your work to and from the framers, and putting the bloody cat out!

The only perceived downside to hiring staff is the expense (unless you’re a loner and just don’t like people). So lets look at that. While you bog yourself down with $20 per hr tasks all week that’s all you will make. go find an awesome graduate like i do (who knows more than me about so many things). Who is happy with $20 per hour because that’s good pay. What happens? They have energy to burn; they are smart, love Photoshop, and are willing to learn. They do all the stuff you shouldn’t be doing. all you have to do is find One sitting per week extra to pay for them. but in reality what actually happens is because you HaVe to go through the process of finding that one extra sitting, means you book not one but many sittings.

How is it any different to signing that mortgage for the first time? There you commit to the biggest expense in your life, not truly knowing how you will forever fund it. You back yourself. Once you have hired and aren’t distracted by all that other stuff, believe it or not with a little bit of time to YOUrSeLF you might discover how clever you actually are. if you chase a $2000 average sale (which is highly achievable even at moderate pricing), and you only get 2-3 sittings, let alone 5-10 or 10-15 sittings, you are $4200 per week better off! That’s over $200,000 a year at least.

Lets look at the other upsides. Firstly, if every shooter hired one person we would double the number of people working in our industry instantly. This is a very good thing, to keep us moving forward and stay fresh, and make our businesses dynamic. Secondly, you can now be way smarter in time / function allocation. That is YOU are now in control of your time and what you do with it and not the other way around.

every client contact (consultation, shoot, viewing) is a relationship building and selling situation. That’s all i have ever done and will ever do in my business. That iS the business you take care of, that and everything else falls into place. i have had a staff member from day one. i have no idea how to build an album or even turn Photoshop on. Truth be known the latter is a bit sad probably, but as a businessman photographer i have no time for it, and others do it way better.

i make a good living; get to train on my road bike (which i am completely addicted to) four days a week, play 9 handicap golf, and my family want for nothing. best of all our studio rocks with happy clever people who i am so grateful to have in my life. all i did was put an ad in the paper one day, and from that day that person, and those that followed have given me the freedom to enjoy photography for what it is for me. a privilege to serve my clients, my family, and you guys.

based in Palmerston north, Paul is a lecturer at UCOL and has been successfully entering both the iris awards and aPPa’s for many years.

“I photograph what I’m passionate about & believe an award winning image is mysterious in that it is up to the viewer’s imagination to complete the story,” said Paul. “It should draw the viewer in, & trigger a response whether it is positive or negative or even what the photographer intended.”

as a Latvian refugee he travelled to new zealand as a five-year-old, & has long been recognised for his stunning images of new zealand.

He started his career in Fiordland as an 18 year old, recording new zealand’s remote & rugged areas.

“I fell in love with the landscape & wanted to show others what we had,” he said.

While andris has carved out a niche as a panoramic landscape photographer, he has said his focus had shifted into the “subtle message of preservation”.

Web Profiles for Qualified Members as a membership benefit, nziPP Qualified members are entitled to a profile & gallery listing in the Find a Photographer function on the nziPP website.

Potential clients using the Find a Photographer function will first search by region, then by qualification (Commercial, Wedding, Portrait – remember you’re only listed in categories in which you have a Q). if 10 listings come up, & only two have galleries loaded to grab that buyer’s attention, guess who’s going to get the job! in addition those that have galleries loaded will appear at the top of the results list, & those who don’t have galleries will appear at the bottom - so loading your profile and gallery is really worth the effort.

Don’t delay – login to the nziPP membership system using your member iD & password, & go to the Q Profile tab of your membership record. Check out the Help pages for guidelines on how to use the new system, & don’t forget to save & submit your new profile. Once submitted your profile is queued & will be available online once approved. This is not an automated task so can take up to 24 hours.

Q Submission DatesFor those who aren’t qualified yet it’s time to start planning a Q submission in 2010. Once successful you’ll be able to advertise your nziPP qualification, & your profile will appear in the Find a Photographer function on the nziPP website.

This creates considerable added workload for the national administrators & the regional chair people. it also costs the nziPP quite a lot of unnecessary time & money, not to mention some uncomfortable situations when trying to chase payments. We would prefer to use our time & resources on issues that help the wider nziPP membership.

For those of you who are overdue members we would like you to do one of the two things detailed below as soon as possible:

Wellington RegionSince taking over from rob Dreissen as chairman i have had three great committee meetings with an enthusiastic group of eight. in June we held a print critique afternoon, it was a grotty day outside, we had some impassive prints and diverse judges. Our Facebook page has gone live and some members of our committee are doing a great job with our nziPP cafe every monday, see our nziPP Wellington Facebook page.

Kate macPherson has been to an elizabeth messina workshop in France. Kate has written the following article for PrO rePOrT below.

Elizabeth Messina WorkshopSo i went over to France in may to attend a workshop with US photographer elizabeth messina. She is known predominantly for shooting medium format film, & for her ethereal photographic qualities & lovely soft tones. The beautiful buildings, amazing grounds, & hanging out with 17 other photographers was one of those experiences you don’t forget. The light was amazing, the talent was beautiful, & the countryside was magical.

We mostly spent the days shooting models in the grounds & chateau...& our evenings being cooked delicious dinners & drinking local wines. expensive? Yes...worth every penny? Yes...& then some. an experience i would recommend for pure inspiration & for the lovely people i got to meet.

Canterbury / Westland RegionThe June meeting of the Canterbury / Westland branch was held at the new premises of Photo Warehouse in Christchurch. a good turnout of nearly 50 members enjoyed the canapes and drinks supplied by the PW team and it was encouraging to see the size and quality of the new shop - a sure sign of confidence in the local photography market.

Our speaker for the meeting was Jessica mills from new zealand Colour management (www.nzcolourmanagement.com). based in auckland, her and her colleague travel throughout the country offering colour management services including advice, training, calibration, and products. Jess gave a very clear and concise presentation, but with enough technical detail for people to take away useful information. She covered the fundamentals of colour, profiling of monitors, cameras and printers, and showed how to set colour management with Photoshop and Lightroom. She also showed a number of products that can be used for calibrating printers and monitors, tools to use at capture time, and a portable light stand for displaying work to clients under a consistent light. Jess spent the following two days travelling around local photographers in Christchurch advising them on their own personal set ups.

Our thanks go to Jess for making the trip from auckland, and to the team at Photo Warehouse for the hospitality and use of their premises.

Regional Updates

Waikato / bOP Regionat our June meeting in rotorua we were intrigued by our invited guest presenter Cory Scott. Cory gave a very interesting insight into this life as one of the great sports / surf photographers in new zealand and winner of the Qantas Sports Photo Portfolio award.

The top pro-surfers are an eclectic bunch, but a lot of fun, and also very well paid. He showed some lovely images from the local scenery as well as people shots.

Some of the images he showed us were taken from about 30cm away from the surfers, using a fisheye lens with his own handmade waterproof housings for his flash and camera gear. You have to be fit to be able to keep this close to the surfers in sometimes waves as high as 30 to 50 ft.

Travelling with 25kg plus camera gear as cabin luggage proves to be a challenge at times, but you learn very quickly. Cory used to scan his tranny’s but this became too costly so these last four years he has been completely digital.

Name: Fiona McLachlan

What’s your role involve with the NZIPP? How long have you been working for NZIPP? How many hours a week do you work for NZIPP?

i have been the administration Officer for nziPP for 2.5 years, and work 16 hours a week (usually on a monday and Friday). my main duties include answering email queries; membership record maintenance; agenda preparation and minute taking for board, agm and Policy & Planning meetings; Q administration, and dealing with complaints.

What else do you do?

i am also contracted by the nz arab Horse breeders’ Society as their national Secretary, and Snowy Peak Ltd as their Human resources manager. in my spare time i am also the Vice President and Treasurer of the nz Shetland Pony breeders’ Society.

Something that makes you grumpy?

People that get snarky when they don’t get an instant reply to their email.

Are you a collector of anything?

Horses – currently have five Shetland Ponies and two partbred arabs of my own plus looking after seven others for friends – my husband says i’m only allowed one more – we’ll see!

my hair colour is natural!

Seemingly endless school holidays.

Sunscreen, chocolate, Coke zero, a fridge to keep these cool in and a borders bookstore.
