The new year is already in it’s second month and I know and hear how well, many of you are charging on with your businesses, creating great memories andimages.Iharpedonlastyearaboutfindinganaccountabilitybuddy,someone you can share with, to motivate each other and challenge each othertofindthesolutionsyouseekandthemotivationtoachieveyourgoals.Give it a go if you haven’t, apart from a bit of fun it works !

Your national board is like rust, it never sleeps. Even over the break e-mails stillflyandplanningandideasareconstantlyswappedandvettedbyeachof us. The NZIPP just wants the best for you all, and as a bunch of people we take our responsibility to make this so very seriously. Part of that is the realisation for the need to meet these changing times head on. Apart from the obvious camaraderie we share with each we all seek information as to how to do things better. Discovery is as exciting as it is helpful.

This year we are going to introduce the program for our national Infocus conferenceslightlydifferently,toreflectanewdirectionweareundertakingto help us all. Rather than announcing personalities, we will inform as to the contentofourprogramfirst.Wehaveputtogetherwhatwillbethemostcomprehensive and informative offering yet.

International and local presenters will present skills we know will be of value, that will be useful and not just entertaining. This is not about rockstars showing and telling, this will be all about you, as will be obvious in the motto of the conference. Start putting something away now for what will be a great offering in the most beautiful part of the world.

A constant awareness of your board is to spend what funds we have in the most effective and responsible way possible. These funds only have two sources. Subscriptions and sponsors. I feel it timely, at the beginning of our year to remind us all that we are a NON PROFIT organisation. In case some people might wonder, there is no slush fund from which the board enjoys flashhotelsandexoticmealsout.OnthecontraryatourlastgatheringinChCh we bunked in members houses and fed and watered ourselves.

ThepointIamtryingtomakeisthataswefindthebestofforumsandinformation for you this doesn’t come all inclusive of your subs. The software that is the backbone of our organisation and our Iris awards is like any bespoke system. It needs nurturing and updating to stay effective and takes money. Our organisation is a user pays system that is bolstered by the kindness of companies like Epson, our headline sponsor and the Kodaks and I.P.S’s and CRK’s and the income provided by exhibitors at conference. These companies work hard to transport their products and staff to wherever we have our conference and are part of our family and you should support them as they support us.

So when you ask yourself what do I get for my subs and conference fees, which together are little more than a grand year or twenty dollars a week ( four coffees in Auckland ), remember the clever and dedicated fellow members who slave away in the background both regionally and nationally. We are thinking of and making happen opportunities for you all to experience, enjoy and grab with both hands. Just like our software needs money to stay current, so to do you and your businesses.

Everynow&thenyoufindyourselfonahamsterwheelrunningtonowhere……. just stop & get off …... or jump, its hurts for a little while but you will survive.

I’mfinallyoffmyhamsterwheel,&forthefirsttimein20yearsIwasabletoenjoy a summer, in fact the most stunning summer. It was as if the universe gave me the ultimate gift of endless sunshine to show me what I have been missing.

Standing still has enabled me to take a critical look at my business plus reposition myself ready to move in a new direction. I produced a list last year of things I’d like to achieve & they are steadily being actioned.

One item was an exhibition. This materialised as a joint exhibition / collaboration for the NZ Garden & Arts Festival with Artist Jenny Coker. Jenny has been a client of mine for a few years now, she jumps between oils & watercolour a botanical master of both. Although 20 years my senior she has an abundance of energy which is infectious, and she’s a serial rule breaker - I was instantly attracted. So we wrote ourselves a brief ….. but never followed it - a match made in heaven. As the months went by we spurred each other along, straying further from the path but our work evolved into a show we were proud of. After this process of collaboration I found I had transitioned to a place where I felt excited to continue personal art projects

Collaborations between photographers / stylists / hair / makeup happen all the time, it’s a fun day but usually weights heavily on the photographer. I urgeyoutofindacollaborationthatisnotobvious,onewhichcausesissuesorproblemsintryingtofindcohesion,thisiswhereyoustarttappingintoyour most inner creative & start expanding your thinking. Like a muscle being torn, then repairing larger & stronger. Most people see problems as bad things or hurdles, but they are actually opportunities to create positive change & grow. Tackle the problem head on or out smart it ( note to self ..... Must apply this theory to teenage sons & husband instead of drinking wine ).

Another item on my list .....”to read more & look less”. I’ll explain. I logged thehoursoneweekformysocialmedia/blog/sitesurfingusagewithSHOCKING results. I only end up in these time sucking machines because someone messages me or tags me & I either must respond or I’m curious. Even though the amount of information / education on line is endless & works forsomepeople,IfindithitsmeatsuchspeedthatIcan’tprocessorretainit fast enough for it to be of any real long term use ( dare I say it, this could be age related too ). So in my quest for focus + sustainable knowledge I’ve gone back to the good old paper back. Stacked beside my bed their spines greet me each morning reminding me to stay on track. Most of the recent titles I’ve enjoyed are business related, ..... “Thinking for a living” - why ideas are worth more than execution, “different” - escaping the competitive herd, &currently“Unfairfight”-ADavid&Goliathtakeonpunchingaboveyourweight. Might be a nice idea to have a resource for recommended reading in future Pro Reports ? ( anyone want a job? )

Let the games begin …

Wow, what a fantastic Summer we are having, I hope you’re all making the most of the lovely warm, long days!

Preparation for the release of the 2015 Iris Awards Call for Entries document in early March is well under way. While the Honours team has had much discussion on several aspects of the document we are pleased to say there are only a few tweaks to make this year to clarify some of the rulings. To help those who are already planning and producing entries please take note of the following:

1. Same subject: “No two photographs of the same subject may be entered.”

The only exception now is that an image included in a Wedding Album entry may be entered into a category such as Wedding Classic or Wedding Creative (but not both).

2. Documentary Category: While this was very successful in many ways last year, we had quite a bit of feedback around the digital judging, so in response we have made the decision to return to print entries for this category. The only digital judging in 2015 will be the Wedding Album category.

An additional change is including a caption, of no more than 40 characters, as an image title to provide judges with a context for which the image was created.

3. Wedding Album Category: Digitalfilesarenowrequiredtobesubmittedon a USB and no longer on a CD/DVD.

4. Print size: The rule now states that the “visible portion of an image, inside any matting, is no smaller than 26cm on the longest side.” This is to avoid any confusion when prints are in fact produced at 26cm, but the window matting ends up covering various portions of the image, thereby decreasing the “actual” print size by between 5 and sometimes 10mm.

Matt board size remains at 40cm x 50cm.

5. Fusion / Short Film: Following the decision to remove the Fusion category following last year’s awards due to low entry numbers, the intention was to broaden the scope and appeal of what Fusion offered by introducing a Short Film category, that would run “alongside” the Iris Awards. During our FEBRUARY meeting, the Honours team had to reluctantly make the decision to postpone the introduction of the “Short Film” category. In working towards an outcome, it became apparent there wasasignificantamountmoreworkneededthanwaspossibleinthetimeframe available in order to do the category justice. Though we will no longer be offering the Fusion category, we still hope roll out the “Short Film” category for 2016.

As I was nervously going through my practice run for my talk last year

for Infocus 2014 in Rotorua, I had a vision. Call it an epiphany.

I was thinking about my journey with NZIPP and it made me smile.

Then it made me think of penguins.

Penguins live in community. The larger penguins huddle around the small

baby penguins and keep them safe from the cold until they are big

enough and strong enough to emerge to the outer circle of the colony

and are then able to protect the new fledgling babies.

This image of a penguin colony is my experience with the NZIPP.

I was protected and supported as a new fluffy, scared little penguin

8 years ago when I first became a member.

Since those days, I have been encouraged, supported, challenged and I have

grown to love my photographic career even more because of the NZIPP

colony and now I find myself enjoying being on the outer edges ready

to support and nurture the new penguins and the ones that need help.

The key values I see in the NZIPP are to teach, inspire and nurture those

of us who are part of this incredible industry. We are all penguins.

We all have a place in the colony.

WPC 2015, REGISTRATIONS CLOSED THE WORLD PHOTOGRAPHIC CUP STRIKES AGAIN!

The second edition of the World Photographic Cup, the unique Olympics styled competition instigated by the FEP, Federation of European Professional Photographers and the PPA, Professional Photographers of America, and supported by UAPP, United Asian Professional Photography and AIPP, Australian Institute of Professional Photographers, just closed the registrations with a striking success: with 27 national teams entered, from 4 continents, the WPC reached a new record number and 23% increase!

Here is the registration list. North America: Canada and USA. Oceania: Australia and New Zealand. Asia: India, Japan, Korea, Pakistan, Thailand. Europe: Austria, Belgium, Czech Rep., Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Netherland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, UK, Ukraine...

The WPC governing committee wish to express its grateful thanks to all the associations around the globe and to their coordinators for the wonderful support and the amazing images submitted.

Images will remain off line until the jury will finish its job, then the entire gallery of the submitted images will be published on www.worldphotographiccup.org . The 15 international judges will start judging on December 15th and will close it on January 15th, 2015. The jury is composed by 5 European photographers, 4 from America, 4 from Asia, and 2 from Oceania.

Finalist images (top ten in each category) will be announced at Imaging USA in Nashville, Tennessee , on Monday February 2nd, and circulated after then. Medalists will be announced at the end of February. Individual winners will be announced and – finally - the World Cup will be presented to the winning national team in Montpellier, France, on April 12th, 2015.

The event is February 1-3, 2015 at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. The program will include the reception of the WARREN MOTTS INTERNATIONAL SERVICE AWARD, assigned by PPA to the WPC board of governors in recognition of their outstanding service in creating friendship and uniting professional photographers worldwide.

NZIPP NewsChanging Roles....After 9 years of exceptional service, Deborah Aspray (Web Administrator), is leaving her post with the NZIPP. We have been incredibly fortunate to have Deborah working alongside the Board throughout this time, helping the NZIPP through many changes and advancements in IT, as well as undertaking a myriad of other tasks for the Institute.

We will be very sad to see Deborah move on from this role, but she will remain an important and highly regarded member of the NZIPP family, and we wish her every success in her own growing photography business.

NZIPP - IT Coordinator - Contract • Solid and broad IT expertise required

What’s in it for me?

Thisisanopportunitynottobemissedforanexperiencedcontractorwhowantsaflexiblepart-timecontractthattheycanfulfillfromtheirownhome.

What would I be doing?

Reporting directly to the Executive Director you will be responsible for the IT needs of the NZIPP, including website administration and providing technical support for events. You will oversee all aspects of our IT systems, putting to use your ability to make good decisions, escalate issues when required and to complete all IT administration tasks.

Travel within New Zealand, including overnight stays, will be required from time to time. The successful candidate would ideally be located in Christchurch for ease of working with other part-time personnel, however this is not essential.

What do I need?

In addition to your maturity, proven decision making ability and solid IT experience you will need:

• Excellent Web Administration skills and/or experienced in using Customer Management Systems. Experience with the DNN platform is an advantage.

• Experience in coordinating and being responsive to requests from other professionals.

• Motivation, organisation and the ability to work autonomously in your own premises.

• Availability for immediate start.

Regional UpdatesAuckland/Northland RegionI hope everyone is enjoying a wonderful summer, the weather has certainly played it’s part so far. Thanks for all those that came along to our January social function at Seans place, it was a really fun night.

Here in Auckland planning is already well underway for 2015, and we have some great events coming up. Starting with Tonic which will see Mike Langford, Jason Naylor and Dawn Dutton as keynote speakers for our inaugural Northland meeting to be held in Whangarei. It promises to be a great day so make sure you come along.

Thedaywillconsistof2parts,firstlytheformalpartwithpresentationsfromour speakers as well as our key suppliers and sponsors. Later in the evening for those of you that are staying, we will enjoy a dinner whilst shooting the breeze with fellow photographers.

LookingaheadtoMarchwehavethefirstworkshopoftheyear,CanonandNZIPP Auckland are running a complete wedding workshop. The church has been booked for a mock wedding. I hope you all had a great break and some R&R and I’m sure you are all back into...Market - Shoot - Sell... Market - Shoot - Sell... Market – Shoot - Sell!

Our Christmas Party at Macau Restaurant in Tauranga was a great success thanks to the Christmas Party Team (Suzanne Todd-McKeown, Jody Beattie and myself, plus helpers, Sarah Beaufoy and Tracy Stamatakos). Congratulations again to Kim Howells for winning the NZIPP Waikato/BOP Regional Photographer of the Year.

What is in store for 2015...come and join us every second Tuesday of every month and listen to some great speakers, dinners and socializing. This year kicks off in Hamilton with the 2014 NZIPP Waikato/BOP Regional Photographer of the Year Kim Howells speaking about how far she has come in a short space of time and how she gives back to the amateur photography market and beyond.

We have another group of speakers organized for the March meeting in Tauranga, so a good start to the year.

2015 for me is the “Year of Support” and its time for everyone in our region to become even more active with each other and help out wherever we can. Suzanne and I are in our 3rd year of full-time business together and we are hoping for bigger and brighter things! So, what is your BIG goal for the YEAR 2015? Our region will be having a “round table” question & answer session at the next meeting.

Regional UpdatesCanterbury/Westland RegionWoohoo 2015 is here!! It’s going to be a fabulous year! I know this because so far January has been amazing. Weather down here has been hot hot so lots of outdoor stuff going on in my world and I have an awesome tan!! (cos that’s important!!)

Committee hasn’t met since before Christmas but we have made plans to bring the region some fantastic meetings, a couple of workshops and a weekend retreat. Since I really don’t have much to report on, I thought I would tell you a little about my plans for this year. We all know it’s good to set goals right? Who does this really? And who follows through with them? Maybe5%Ireallydon’tknow,neverbeenoneforfactsandfigures.Butas you know we are going to be running the accountability network this year and I think setting one or two goals to run alongside this will make for asuccessfulandprofitableyearwherewecanallenjoygrowthinourselvesand our business.

Couple of my goals for this year include stepping outside my comfort zone. Which means stepping outside the studio!! The studio is my happy place and safe zone. This year I want to stretch myself to see what I can do. I want to shoot more creatively, with a plan and see what happens. I’m not such a good planner!! Also learning more about this business thing, I have discovered over the past year that the taking of photos is actually the easy bit, running a business…now that is a different story. I plan to get things like workflowandbackingupmorestreamlined(number1goaltobesortedbefore end of February).

No photos from meetings with this report, so here is a couple of me water skiing!!! Maybe next year I might actually make it out of the water!!

What’s In My Bag...? Kim Howells MNZIPP - Waikato/BOPI’m not very good at making decisions. I have to weigh them up, and be really sure, before I make my mind up. That has resulted in me enjoying different genres of photography, and a varied kit to match!

For birth photography, I use the 5DMkIII, and 24-70mm f/2.7L MkII. It means I don’t have to zoom with my feet all the time (handy when staying out of the way of support people), I can get some nice wide shots, and I can shoot with a reasonably large aperture in the low light.

When shooting families and kids, I change my mind often with lenses. Some I may use just the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II for, and others I may use a prime – whatever suits the situation (often the 135mm f/2L). I seldom use my 85mm f/1.8; it will probably be leaving the bag soon. When shooting indoors (babies, commercial work), I tend to use the 50mm f/1.4.

Commercial work is usually in the agricultural sector outdoors, or kids’ apparel. I often use the 24-70 outdoors as it’s such a versatile workhorse, and the 50mm for studio shots of kids modelling clothing.

During weddings I use both the 5DMkIII and the 5DMkII. I use the 24 for “getting ready” shots, and the 100mm f/2.8 for details. Throughout the ceremony I use the same, plus the other body with the 70-200mm f/2.8L II, on a Black Rapid double harness. The creatives are shot on whatever works on the day, much like portrait sessions, whether zooms or primes.

I shoot mostly with natural light, but have started dabbling in the use of strobes. I love Albert (my Einstein) for his portability and versatility. And I love usingavideolight(YongNuo300)whenitsuits.Myreflectordoesn’tgetasmuch use as it probably should.

The lens not mentioned so far is the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6. I bought it second hand recently “just for fun” – wildlife etc. But it is a fun portrait lens too when there is plenty of room!

What’s In My Bag...?

I love editing – the trickier the better. My Wacom is at the top of my must-have list. I also love colour management (am calibrated with an i1DisplayPro), don’t like Lightroom one little bit, but love Photoshop/Bridge/ACR. I am currently printing mostly my own prints on an Epson Stylus Photo R2880.

The judges will also be on a search for the International Landscape Photographer of the Year (based on a folio submission of at least 4 images) and the International Landscape Photograph of the Year.

Each entry will be scored by all judges on the panel and receive a score out of 500. Prizes on offer include US$10,000 cash, trophies, limited-edition copies of the awards book and large framed prints of winning images.
