The unit includes a fieldwork component and community engagement hours as well as both written and practical assessments

Online Learning Modules

Students should complete the relevant online learning modules independently prior to attending classes each week Classroom activities are developed to build on what is learned through each module and classroom activities rely on studentsrsquo completion of the associated online activities As directed throughout each module there may be some reflective aspects to the module which students must complete to consolidate learning after class

Classroom Activities

Lectures

It is expected that students will view each lecture presented throughout the unit on the week that it is scheduled Important updates and unit content are delivered during the face-to-face lectures Each lecture will be recorded as an iLecture and will be available through the NURS1002 BlackBoard site Due to the inherent benefits of physically attending the lecture it is strongly encouraged that students attend face-to-face

Tutorials

It is expected that students will attend each tutorial as per the program calendar Tutorials are used to consolidate and develop nursing knowledge and skills Given the practical nature of the nursing profession missed tutorials are likely to represent a significant disadvantage for students students are advised to notify the Unit Coordinator if a tutorial is going to be missed so that an alternative class can be offered or catch-up materials provided Tutorial swaps will only be considered for valid circumstances eg illness

Science Laboratories

Science laboratories provide an opportunity for students to advance thier clinical practice and to develop assessable clinical skills

Science laboratories are considered essential for the development of safe clinical practice and are therefore compulsory If unable to attend a laboratory students must advise the Unit Coordinator by email as soon as practicable and supply medical certificate to support the absence Where possible the Unit Coordinator will attempt to place the student in an alternative laboratory class or provide catch- up material

Failure to attend laboratory sessions without adequate certification can result in the student being placed on a learning contract or excluded from clinical placement at the discretion of the Course Coordinator Please refer to the schools guidelines regarding preparation and completion of clinical practice httphealthsciencescurtineduauschools-and-departmentsnursing-midwifery-paramedicinestudentsschool-guidelines

The placement is allocated by the Nursing Clinical Office and placement details are made available via SONia Students are advised to check SONia weekly to avoid missing important updates Clinical enquiries can be emailed to the Nursing Clinical Office at clinicalnursingmidwiferycurtineduau In order to attend clinical placement students must have completed and submitted the mandatory health and legal checks The status of these health and legal checks is displayed via SONia for students to view For information of these requirements visit httphealthsciencescurtineduauschools-and-departmentsnursing-midwifery-paramedicineclinical-practicechecks Failure to complete these checks by the necessary deadline will preclude clinical placement attendance and will result in a fail grade for the unit

There will be a number of clinical rotations prior to and following the semester Students are notified of possible placement rotations via the Official Communication Channel and may then be allocated to any of these rotations students are expected to be available for the placement as allocated

Each clinical unit determines the specific competencies that are to be achieved in conjunction with the associated theory However nursing and midwifery students are also required to demonstrate appropriate professional performance against all the competency standards on a continuous basis in all clinical placements Clinical preceptors (a Registered Nurse) will sign off students competencies on the Nursing Competency Assessment Schedule (NCAS) Each student is responsible for completing their NCAS with the preceptor and should report any concerns to the Unit Coordinator

A medical certificate is required for any missed clinical time The clinical agency clinical facilitator (if applicable) and the unit coordinator must all be informed of any absence from placement In the case of absence students are to notify the agency prior to the start time of the shift and then the unit coordinator as soon as practicable on the day of the missed clinical time Students must make-up any missed clinical time in order to pass the placement

A Learning Contract will be implemented during the clinical placement where the preceptor assesses the students clinical performance to be at a fail standard This contract will be formulated between the preceptor the student and the unit coordinator The contract will clearly outline the deficient competency area what the student must do to address the problem and by what date this competency is to be achieved

At the discretion of the unit coordinator and in association with the Clinical Fieldwork Coordinator a fail will be given to any student who does not demonstrate safe practice in either an exam situation or on clinical placement

Community Engagement

Students must complete 40 hours of community engagement volunteering as an assessable component of this unit The community engagement activities are arranged by the student who will volunteer as a lay-person performing activities which contribute to community or individual wellness The assessment is complete when the completed community engagement log is submitted

Students are to liaise directly with the agency for which they will volunteer and should be aware that Curtin does not cover insurance for clinical engagement activities Students are responsible for checking insurance arrangements at their volunteering site

Further details about suitable (and unsuitable) volunteering opportunities can be found on the NURS1002 BlackBoard site

Learning Activities This unit consists of lectures tutorials science laboratories and independent learning through the completion of online learning modules The program calendar at the back of this Unit Outline provides full details of the weekly class schedule and associated independent learning activities

Learning Activities This unit consists of lectures tutorials science laboratories and independent learning through the completion of online learning modules The program calendar at the back of this Unit Outline provides full details of the weekly class schedule and associated independent learning activities
