The progression sets, 1976, 1981, 1982 through 1994, each contain eight small and large examples. The die trials date back to 1947, an incomplete group all the way through 1982. Brookgreen Gardens is a sculpture museum in South Carolina that annually honors American sculptors with a medallic piece that they design each year. They are the only such museum in America to put out a medallic series. The series is very highly collected throughout America for the brilliantly artistic designs. The medals are made by

Lot # 3506 Circle of Friends of the Medallion: 1909 Book and 1st Medallion 1909 “Hudson-Fulton Celebration.” The first medal, issued by the Circle of Friends of the Medallion in Manhattan. September 1909. Book and medallion. Foxing on title page. This is the first of the set. The Circle of Friends of the Medallion issued by limited subscription from 1908 to 1915. The purpose was to promote American art and artists. The effort led to the later creation of the Society of Medalists. Medals were issued in books with a brief text.
