“Think Green” is this year’s motto for the Europa stamps issued by the member states of the trade association that represents European public postal operators, PostEurop. In a competition between all the participating postal companies, the stamp “From Grey to Green” (face value: CHF 1.50) of the Cypriot Doxia Sergidou emerged as the winner. It shows a grey city full of emissions changing into a green oasis. This design will be published as the joint Europa stamp 2016 by every country. In addition, Philately Liechtenstein is issuing a national Europa stamp on the same topic. To this end, it held

its own competition among trainee graphic artists and polygraphers in Liechtenstein. Aurora Corra-do won over the jury with her design “Rethinking Green” (face value: CHF 1.50). She divided the Earth depicted on her stamp into two parts: One half of the Earth shows skyscrapers and industrial buildings in unfriendly colours while on the other half, you can see a green landscape with mountains and a rainbow. The self-adhesive special stamp can also be affixed upside down. On the 16-stamp sheet, the stamps have been arranged alternately in each direction.

SEPAC – Four Seasons

SEPAC is a cooperation between 14 small postal ad-ministrations in Europe that issue stamps on common themes on a regular basis. This year each country is creating its own special stamp on the four seasons. Designer Hans Peter Gassner did the graphics for Liechtenstein’s “Four Seasons” SEPAC stamp (face value: CHF 1.50). It is divided into equally large areas depicting winter, spring, summer and autumn in a clockwise direction. At the same time, a palette with coloured fields symbolises the time of the year. In ad-dition, the theme of the SEPAC stamp was printed on a 10-stamp sheetlet in silver with a partial UV coating

in each language of the member states. For instance, “four seasons” is called “fyra årstider” in Sweden, while they say “Ukiup immikkoortui sisamat” for this in Greenland, “véier Joreszäiten” in Luxembourg and “erba’ staġuni” in Malta. SEPAC issued its first joint stamp entitled “Land-scapes” in 2007. In the meantime, Åland, the Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Greenland, Guernsey, Iceland, Isle of Man, Jersey, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, San Marino and the Vatican City are mem-bers of this cooperation.

PhilatelyLiechtenstein Painters – Alois Ritter

The artist who created the designs to continue the series on painters from Liechtenstein was an enthu-siastic teacher: Princely Music Director Alois Ritter (1910-1986). He practised his main profession as a teacher for 44 years. He devoted another large part of his life to music: He was active as an organist for 54 years and as a successful choirmaster for almost just as long. In addition, Alois Ritter was interested and active in painting. He taught himself various techniques and drew sketches and painted still life, oil paintings and much more. The Liechtensteiner loved painting outdoors as well as in his studio based on

his own designs. On 16 April 1986, he finished his oil painting “Girl with Goat” and unexpectedly died of a stroke only five minutes later. In memory of him and his oeuvre, his works were presented to the public six years ago in an exhibition commemorating his 100th birthday.With this special issue, Philately Liechtenstein is yet again showing the work of a local artist. “Ruggeller Riet 1951” (face value: CHF 1.00) is an oil painting while the Triesner motif “Im Bofel 1986” (face value: CHF 2.00) was painted in watercolours.

Archaeological Finds in Liechtenstein: Utensils

The multi-part stamp series of archaeological finds in Liechtenstein shows three utensils in this issue. The dagger (face value: CHF 1.00) was made of flint, pre-historic man’s steel, in the Neolithic period (4th cen-tury B.C.). Experts assume that it was imported from Monti Lessini at Lake Garda by people belonging to the Horgen culture who lived on the Schellen-berg-Borscht site. The lancet-shaped blade which has a broken-off tip is eleven centimetres long and the organic handle is missing. The dagger is important evidence of the trade relations that were conducted over long distances by the Neolithic inhabitants of the Alpine Rhine Valley.

The razor (face value: CHF 1.50) dates back to the late Bronze Age (12th century B.C.) and was discov-ered as an individual find in a piece of woodlands in the municipality of Vaduz. Its large blade and oval, frame handle with an end ring are characteristic features of such utensils. The winged axe (face value: CHF 2.00) from the Hallstatt period (5th century B.C.) is made of bronze. It was discovered in around 1920 whilst cutting peat in the Ruggeller Riet. The two wings and the eyelet serve to fix the blade to the wooden handle that no longer exists.

A definitive stamp series with trees ushers in some-thing new: Small-format stamps measuring 24.75 x 27.2 millimetres on a 40-stamp sheet are available for the first time in Liechtenstein. These stamps are to be used especially whenever a large number of postal items need to be franked. Free-standing trees found in Liechtenstein were selected as designs for the self-adhesive stamps. The oak can grow up to 50 metres high (face value: CHF 0.85). Its hard wood has always been used in a whole host of different ways. The weeping willow (face value: CHF 1.00) loves sunny spots. It often

adorns the banks of waters with its long, slender drooping branches. The fruits of the walnut tree (face value: CHF 1.50) have been an important food for humans for thousands of years as they are a good source of energy on account of their high fat content. The aspen (value: CHF 1.70), also called willow, is one of the most important food plants for butter-flies indigenous to Central Europe. The larvae of the most beautiful species live in this tree. The birch (face value: CHF 2.00) is easy to recognise by its black and white bark. As it is only pollinated by wind, it releases a large amount of pollen compared with other trees.

The "Princely Treasures: Chinese Porcelain" stamp issue from Liechtenstein by Silvia Ruppen was selected from among the best three stamps in the steel engraving category. Philatelie Liechtenstein thanks the international jury of experts for this outstanding award.
