REAL NUMBERS

Real numbers can be classified into two categories:

1. Rational Numbers

2. Irrational Numbers

RATIONAL NUMBERS

A rational number is a number which can be written as a fraction where numerator and denominator are integers (where the top and bottom of the fraction are whole numbers). For example 1/2, 4, 1.75 (=7/4).

RATIONAL NUMBERS

Within rational numbers are:

a. natural numbers

b. whole numbers

c. integers

d. all integers plus fractions that result in

a decimal or repeating decimal

Natural & Whole Numbers

Natural numbers are numbers we use for counting such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5………..

Whole numbers are natural numbers plus 0. (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5……….)

Some people include 0 in both natural numbers and whole numbers.

ODD & EVEN

Natural/Whole numbers include odd and even numbers.

Odd numbers begin with 1 and increase by 2. (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11………)

Even numbers begin with 2 and increase by 2. (2, 4, 6, 8, 10…….)

Zero is neither odd nor even.

INTEGERS

Integers are whole numbers and their opposites.

Integers are whole numbers (both positive and negative, including zero). So they are ..., -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, .... So a negative integer is a negative whole number, such as -3, -10 or -23. Natural numbers are positive integers.

INTEGERS

Integers are defined as the group of positive numbers, negative numbers, and zero.

Negative numbers are always shown with a  minus (-)  sign.  Positive numbers do not need to have a + sign.   Remember integers are represented by small slashes on the number lines, and do not include the fractional or decimal numbers in between the slashes.

FRACTIONS

A fraction is a number that expresses part of a group.

Fractions are written in the form a or a/b,

b

where a and b are whole numbers, and the number b is not 0. We will denote fractions using the notation a/b, though the preferred notation is generally a.

IRRATIONAL NUMBERS

Irrational numbers are numbers which cannot be written as fractions. In decimal form these numbers go on forever but the same pattern of digits are not repeated.
