Pecan Nuts

From an Algonquin word meaning “a nut requiring a stone to crack.”

Page 5: Beer And Nuts 4 Beer Nuts

Pecan Nuts

• The Pecan is a large deciduous tree with male catkins that are pendulous

• The female catkins are small, with three to six flowers clustered together.

Pecan Nuts

• The Pecan: NOT a true nut

• Technically a drupe: A “fruit” with a single stone or pit, surrounded by a husk.

• The nut itself is dark brown, oval to oblong.

• Outer husk: Starts out green and turns brown at maturity - then it splits off in four sections to release the thin-shelled nut

Beer Nuts

• “Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer.”

Walnuts

• The walnut was so called because it was introduced from Gaul and Italy.

• The “Gallic Nut”

• Deciduous Tree – 21 Species

• Two-thirds of the world export market and 99% of the US commercial production of English walnuts is grown in California's Central Valley and in Coastal Valleys

Walnuts

• The Walnut is not a true nut – it’s not a fruit either

• Like the Pecan, it is also a drupe.

• Walnuts grow within an outer husk

Nutty Label Laws?

• The FDA sent Diamond Walnuts a warning letter dated February 22, 2010

• Their label said: "OMEGA-3s ... Every time you munch a few walnuts, you're doing your body a big favor.“

• "Studies indicate that the omega-3 fatty acids found in walnuts may help lower cholesterol…”

• FDA says, “Because of these intended uses, your walnut products are drugs within the meaning of section 201”
