    Remote Location Sensor Grid

    High Capacity Indexed Storage System

    As the need or more storage capacity continues to grow it becomes increasingly important

    to have high-capacity archival storage that is organized or easy access without sacricing high

    reliability. A hierarchical storage system can provide indexing capability to quickly nd desired data

    records by layering higher speed memory technologies on top o the low-level mass storage media.

    The upper layers can provide indexing pointers to the most heavily requested data to speed access.

    Additionally, in these systems, RAID (Redundant Arrays o Independent Disks) architectures can be

    used at the mass storage level to dramatically improve reliability.

    The block diagram o a typical system is shown below. The Atmel MCU connects to a system

    level Ethernet port and controls access to the storage system. A Lattice ECP3 FPGA manages the

    storage hierarchy with the Micron eMMC memory storing the data indexes. The Silicon Image SATA

    to dual eSATA core storage processors implement the RAID storage unctions.

    Sensing systems are the eyes and ears o any automated control system. The location o the

    sensors is one o the more critical aspects o providing the data needed or intelligent control. Reliable

    power is also required and in many cases battery back-up operation is supported. In industrial

    applications, like process control, Power over Ethernet can also be employed to simpliy power

    delivery to key sensors used near Ethernet controlled equipment. In some applications sensors use

    a wireless communications protocol to eliminate dependency on the Ethernet system and urther

    improve reliability.

    The block diagram o a typical system is shown below. The LTC LT4275 Power Over Etherne

    Powered Device controller generates power or the sensor rom the Ethernet RJ45 connector. The

    Exar XRP7724 Power Architect controller manages the overall power o the system and charges a

    battery that can be used during power outages. During normal operation the XRP7724 generates

    power or the board and uses a Micrel Ripple Blocker to minimize noise on the power lines to the

    MCU and RF interace sub-block. The Atmel SAM4E MCU captures inormation rom the sensors and

    communicates results to the RF sub-system.

    The LT3798 is a general purpose isolated offline flyback controller that combines active power factor correction (PFC)with no optocoupler required for output voltage feedback into a single-stage converter. The device modulates input current in

    phase with line voltage to attain a PF greater than 0.97. It has both a voltage and current loop so it can provide a constantcurrent or constant voltage (CCCV) output. Its internal architecture provides low harmonic distortion and deliversefficiencies as high as 90%.

    LTC4370 Two-Supply Diode-ORCurrent Balancing ControllerFirst-o-its-kind current-sharing controller with reverse current

    blocking eases design o reliable power systems

    The LTC4370 is a two-supply current sharing controller which incorporates

    MOSFET ideal diodes. The diodes block reverse and shoot-through currents during

    start-up and ault conditions. Their orward voltage is adjusted to share the load

    currents between supplies. Unlike other sharing methods, neither a share bus nor

    trim pins on the supply are required.

    The maximum MOSFET voltage drop can be set with a resistor. A ast gate

    turn-on reduces the load voltage droop during supply switchover. I the input supply

    ails or is shorted, a ast turn-o minimizes reverse current transients.

    The controller operates with supplies rom 2.9V to 18V. For lower rail voltages,

    an external supply is needed at the VCC pin. Enable inputs can be used to turn o

    the MOSFET and put the controller in a low current state. Status outputs indicate

    whether the MOSFETs are on or o. The load sharing unction can be disabled to

    turn the LTC4370 into a dual ideal diode controller.

    LTC3626 20V, 2.5A SynchronousMonolithic Step-Down Regulatorwith Current and TemperatureMonitoring

    The LTC3626 is a high eciency, monolithic

    synchronous buck regulator using a phase-lockable controlled

    on-time, current mode architecture capable o supplying up

    to 2.5A o output current. The operating supply voltage range

    is 3.6V to 20V, making it suitable or a wide range o power

    supply applications.

    The operating requency is programmable rom 500kHz

    to 3MHz with an external resistor allowing the use o small

    surace mount inductors. For applications sensitive to

    switching noise, the LTC3626 can be externally synchronized

    over the same requency range. An internal phaselocked loop

    aligns the on-time o the top power MOSFET to the internal or

    external clock. This unique controlled on-time architecture is

    ideal or high step-down ratio applications that demand highswitching requencies and ast transient response. An internal

    phase lock loop servos the on-time o the internal one-shot

    timer to match the requency o the internal clock or an applied

    external clock.

    The LTC3626 oers two operational modes: Burst Mode

    and orced continuous mode to allow the user to optimize

    output voltage ripple, noise and light load eciency or a given

    application.

    be an excellent high side sensor in these applications

    The Allegro ACS711 provides economical and precise

    solutions or AC or DC current sensing in low-side or high side

    applications less than 100 VDC sensing applications.

    The device consists o a linear Hall sensor circuit with a

    copper conduction path located near the surace o the die.

    Applied current fowing through this copper conduction path

    generates a magnetic eld which is sensed by the integrated

    Hall IC and converted into a proportional voltage. Device accuracy

    is optimized through the close proximity o the magnetic signal

    to the Hall transducer and actory programming at Allegro. The

    output o the device has a positive slope proportional to the

    current fow rom IP+ to IP- (pins 1 and 2, to pins 3 and 4). The

    internal resistance o this conductive path is only 0.6 m withproper PCB design as given in the datasheet.

    The ACS711 can be used in low-side current sensing

    applications, although the terminals o the conductive path are

    electrically isolated rom the sensor leads (pins 5 through 8), providing sucient internal creepage and clearance dimensions or a low AC or DC working

    voltage application. The thickness o the copper conductor allows survival o the device beyond 30 Amps depending on the ambient temperature.

    Ideal or Protecting Ethernet PHYs

    RailClamp TVS diodes are specically designed to protect sensitive

    components which are connected to high-speed data and transmissionlines rom overvoltage caused by ESD (electrostatic discharge), CDE (cable

    discharge events), and EFT (electrical ast transients).

    The unique design incorporates surge rated, low capacitance steering

    diodes and a TVS diode in a single package. The RClamp3374N is designed

    to replace up to two components or board level GbE protection. Each

    device is designed to protect two line pairs. This is accomplished by routing

    traces through the device. When connected in this ashion, the device can

    withstand a high level o surge current (40A, 8/20us) while maintaining a

    low loading capacitance o less than 5pF. The high surge capability means

    it can be used in high threat environments in applications such as Gigabit

    Ethernet, telecommunication lines, and LVDS interaces. The RClamp3374N

    is constructed using Semtechs proprietary EPD process technology. The EPDprocess provides low stand-o voltages with signicant reductions in leakage

    current and capacitance over silicon-avalanche diode processes. It eatures a

    true operating voltage o 3.3 volts or superior protection.
