Seven Answers to

Seven Weeding Questions

Deciding how to weed your library's collection can be daunting. Decisions about criteria and policies are important to address to provide guidance and clarity to staff. Holly Hibner, Adult Services Coordinator, and Mary Kelly, Adult Services Librarian from the Plymouth (MI) District Library answer seven weeding questions that can help you approach your weeding project. Visit the WebJunction website to learn more.

ALA Library Fact Sheet 15

Weeding Library Collections: A Selected Annotated Bibliography for Library Collection Evaluation

“Next to emptying the outdoor bookdrop on cold and snowy days, weeding is the most undesirable job in the library. It is also one of the most important. Collections that go un-weeded tend to be cluttered, unattractive, and unreliable informational resources.”

Will Manley, “The Manley Arts” Booklist, March 1, 1996, p. 1108.

RCLS Weekly Memo 3 August 7, 2017

Photo of the Week

The Pine Bush Area Library congratulates Elizabeth Battaglia (pictured above, left) on the publishing of her heartwarming memoir entitled, George & Janine, published by Words in the Works.

Elizabeth has been a loyal and constant member of the Memoir/ Writing Group which has been meeting at the Library since May 2015. When Elizabeth first came to the group, which is facilitated by Francine D’Alessandro, local writer and poet, (pictured above, right) she expressed her desire to write a memoir based on her British soldier father, her beautiful French mother, and their love story that started during the ending years of WWII in the south of France. With the help of Francine and the encouragement of the other members of the Memoir/Writing Group, Elizabeth’s literary quest has been fulfilled. Karen Fox, Adult Program Coordinator at the library, states, “It’s nice to know that we were part of the process to help make this book a reality for Elizabeth.”

New Dewey Decibel Podcast:

Fighting Fake News

AL: The Scoop, Aug. 1 In Episode 16 of the Dewey Decibel podcast, American

Libraries looks at the “fake news” phenomenon—its history, how we become susceptible to it, and how we can fight it. AL Associate Editor Phil Morehart talks with Joanna Burkhardt, fake news expert, professor, and director of the University of Rhode Island branch libraries, about its pernicious presence in today’s media landscape. Also making an appearance is Marnie Shure, managing editor of The Onion, about the satirical newspaper’s very specific brand of fake news, the role of comedy in truth telling, and how current US politics affects its work.

PBS to Celebrate the Joy of Reading

PBS, July 30 On July 30, at the Television Critics Association Press

Tour, PBS announced The Great American Read, a new eight-part TV series and nationwide campaign that will explore the joy of books and the power of reading, told through the prism of America’s 100 best-loved books, chosen by the public. Designed to spark a national

conversation about reading and the books that have inspired, moved, and shaped us, the series will launch in spring 2018 with a multiplatform digital and social campaign.

Readers and Non-readers

Knowledge Quest blog, Aug. 1 Hannah Byrd Little writes, “Over the past few years, I

have been deeply concerned about declining reading scores. And despite my best efforts, there is an overall decrease in readers in my library. I try to provide support and materials for readers who might struggle with reading and who have learning disabilities. But this decline seems to have little to do with diagnosed disabilities and more to do with changing times. The decline in reading seems to fall into one of three categories: distraction, overwhelm, and overwork.”
