    Both the fall flower sale andtreasure card fundraiser

    were successful! Thank youto everyone that participated

    and helped to raise money

    for our school. The combinedproceeds almost reached

    $11,000 and will go towardour purchase of smart boards

    Kindergarten News

    This month Kindergarten is rocking and rolling! We will start

    literacy centers and guided reading groups this month. We willalso begin assessing the kids in their sight words! The Kinderswill be reading in no time!

    We also look forward to learning about the history behindThanksgiving, comparing life then and now. We will learn aboutgratitude and the importance of spending time with family.

    Please remember to put anything important in your child'scommunication folder. Unfortunately, we don't look throughevery child's backpack. Thank you for your cooperation!

    3rd Grade NewsReading- The students have enjoyed our Following Characters into Meaning Unit. The teachers readaloud Winn Dixie, and the students have noticed the changes that happen over time with the charactersin the story. They learned character traits, putting themselves in another persons shoes and charactermotivations.

    Next, well start our Nonfiction Unit. Students will be reading nonfiction text for guided reading andindependent reading in class. They will learn about non-fiction text features such as bold headings, boldvocabulary words, captions, diagrams and titles. Also, your childs teacher will read aloud Mr. PoppinsPenguinsso the students can contrast and compare what is fact vs. fictional about penguins. This willallow the students to gain some background knowledge about penguins that will lend itself to theirresearch based writing unit.

    Writing- The students will be researching Penguins (or another Antarctic animal) and will create aposter. The poster will include a heading, subtitles, pictures, and illustrations. They will be using theMedia Center, laptops, and books as sources for their research.

    Math- The students just finished Unit 2: Measuring line Segments and Perimeters of Figures. They

    learned how to use centimeter rulers to measure line segments with specified lengths and to investigatethe properties of rectangles, squares, and parallelograms. They also learned how to calculate theperimeter of quadrilaterals and triangles.

    Next, the students will start Unit 4. In this unit, students explore symmetry and congruency and buildupon classifying and identifying polygons by their attributes. They will also explore the measure ofangles. Also, the students will complete a brief unit on patterns. They will identify slides, flips, andturns. They will also explore repeating, growing, and shrinking patterns.

    Social Studies- Unit 2: Our Different Roles -The students are now learning about the multiple rolesthat individuals perform in families, workplaces, and communities. Next, the students will examine howindividuals can initiate change in families, neighborhoods, and communities in Unit 3: People andCommunities over Time.

    4th Grade NewsWriting- We started a spelling program in the 2nd six weeks. We work on differentskills in class every day. Students are working on a Realistic Fiction story now. Theyare having fun with being creative!

    Math- We are moving from 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication into Area and Perimeter!Multiplication is a part of every stepping stone in math so please continue to reviewthe facts with your child at home every night!

    Science- We have started our rotations and will continue them throughout the year!

    Brooks- Fossils

    Jenkins- Animals and AdaptationsSwanson- Earth Science

    Smith- Nutrition

    Adams- Magnets and Electricity

    Social Studies- We will be learning about the first inhabitants of our state, NativeAmericans, colonization and the French and Indian War. We are so excited for IndianDay on November 24th.

    Reading- We will continue our character unit. Students have been very successful whileworking together in their book clubs and are learning new strategies every day!

    Why you became a teacher: I have always enjoyed being around kids and elderly people andknew I wanted to work with one or the other. I know that I am STILL a teacher because I lovekids and teaching makes me happy!

    Favorite thing to do when not at school: I adore my kids, Jerrett and Sadie, and I'm thehappiest when I am doing anything with them and my family.

    Most rewarding part about teaching: The most rewarding part of teaching is being there whena student "gets it" in whatever we are learning. I always want to scream out of happiness andusually do!

    Favorite sport/team to watch: I like to watch basketball and DUKE is my favorite college team.

    Silliest fact about you: I REALLY like jumping on the trampoline and singing out loud in the car!
