Reader's Workshop:Over the next few weeks, our focus in reading groups will be on the different components of a storythat make it easier for us to retell a story. Some of the lessons include: 1-Recognizing the maincharacter of a story. 2- Recognizing supporting characters of a story. 3- Using characters names when

retelling a storynot he , she, or they. 4- Important events that happened in the story. 5- Retellingthe important events in the same order they happened in the story. The children will practice retellingstories from their books they read to you each night. Please make sure that they read each night sothat they are prepared to participate in reading group.

Learning sight words is a crucial part of learning to read. The more they know, the more fluent theirreading is and it builds confidence. It is important that you continue to work on the sight words thatyour child has already been tested on. They will forget them if they are not practicing. The easiest wayto practice is to write the words on index cards and just flash them every day. It takes 2 minutes! Iused to play this simple game with my children when they were learning their sight words. If the childgets the word correct then they get to keep the card. If they dont, then you get to keep it and see whohas the most at the end. I play it in class and the children get so excited when they beat me!! Just addthe new words that are written in their agenda every week.

Writer's Workshop:We will focus on enhancing our small moment stories. Writers will spell words by using the room as aresource with emphasis on the word wall. The words they may not know how to spell, they will spell bystretching out and writing down the letters that match the sounds. Writers will plan their sentence, write it out and reread it to make corrections. Once their stories are completed, they will share themwith a partner.

Math Workshop:Students will continue to count and write numbers 1-50. They also are counting by 10s to 100. Pleasepractice counting by ones and tens, aloud, at home. The children have been working on the differencebetween 2D and 3D shapes. With the start of the second half of the school year, the students will be

taking a Mid-year math assessment beginning next week.

Reader's Workshop:We will be focusing on comprehension and moving from oral to written retellings. We will learn howto identify the important parts of stories, identify the character's feelings, visualize what ishappening, make predictions, and make connections to the books we are reading. Students shouldbe moving away from just reading or calling words in their books. As readers, we should learn toconnect with what is going on in our stories and get a real sense of what is taking place. Pleasecontinue to make reading a top priority each night with your little one. It is amazing how far theywill be able to continue to grow as readers if you keep up this habit.

Writer's Workshop:I am sure your little one has come home talking about a collection of objects they need to bringinto class. Students are using their collection to sort the objects by many differentattributes. We are learning to use adjectives to describe our objects. This will help students tobecome aware of adding colorful words to their writing pieces. This month we will also move into opinion writing. We will learn to give reasons why we support anidea and be able to put these thoughts onto paper.

Phonics:This month our focus is mainly on reading silent e words and learning how to decode multi-syllablewords.

Math Workshop:We are beginning a unit on measurement. Students will learn to read and interpret graphs andcharts, how to tell time to the hour and half hour, and how to use standard and non-standard unitsof measurement. I am in the process of completing mid-year math assessments. I will send resultsas soon as these are completed.

    Social Studies:

Our focus will be on making and reading timelines.
