November, 2012 The BYC Trident • 10 Gostick Place • Vancouver, BC V9M 3G3 • (604) 988-0817 Wow, we’ve had a busy month! With a well attended AGM, to a very, very nice Remembrance Day Ceremony, then wrapping up November with a fantastic Installation Dinner, we all have been busy. Must be November!!! From my view on the stern of Kai and Bobby Kreuchen’s Yacht “Mariteem” we must have had at least 500 people on the beach at Cates Park and about 20 BYC boats in attendance for our Maritime Remembrance Day Ceremonies. We all came back to the Clubhouse to be greeted with big smiles and warm food from Neil T’s team serving Jule Duke’s homemade lasagna. A great treat and company to warm up from the November Rain! I’m sure I’m missing people, but thanks to Henry Gerber on Shore, Bobby and Kai for Mariteem, Jule, Neil, and all the other volunteers that worked alongside of P/C Lea Bancroft to make the day a great one. What a great party!!! We all had a fantastic time at the installation dinner on Saturday night. By all accounts, a great night with great food, great pictures, great company and a fantastic live band. For those that we missed this year, we missed you! And for those that were there, thanks so much for celebrating with us. For both Nancy and I, the Club’s Installation Dinner is always a great kick off to the Christmas Season, and leaves us looking forward to the BYC Parade of Lights on December 8 & Christmas Party December 16. Special thanks again to Burns and Joanne for all their efforts and time to put together the great party Sunday night. I will be hosting “Coffee with the Commodore” on Saturday December 1, from 1000 until noon in the Crow’s Nest. Firstly, drop in anytime and introduce yourself. I’m able and willing to answer any questions about the Club, or sit and chat about boating with you! Secondly, we also want to use this time to help you with the survey if you haven’t been able or would like some help. Conor will be joining me, we will have all abilities to help you get the survey done. But this is the last chance before we officially close the door on input. The next step, as we’ve now obtained information from you is to go back to the data so that we can take your inputs, summarize it and present it back to you We’ve got some very interesting feedback so far, and a few projects in motion. We would also like to share with you some of the ideas we have, and that you’ve shared with us at both Pender and Clementine, as well as a summarized version of the responses from the survey. More details to come but prepare for some invitations to join us in January to discuss a little more.

We likely won’t have another update until after Christmas, so on behalf of the Board I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a wonderful safe and happy Christmas Holiday. This is a special Club we belong to for only one real reason. It’s our membership that makes it such a great place to enjoy our passion year around. All the best everyone.

2012 Installation Dinner & Ball

Joanne and I would like to thank everyone who attended the Installation Dinner. In particular I would like to thank Heather Dunwoody for creating the fabulous flower centerpieces for the head table.

The evening started with a chance for everyone to talk while enjoying a beverage and appetizers. Dinner was a buffet and the speeches were short. A slide show showing some of our club events created a few laughs with all members seeing just how much fun the members can have at the Outstations and Club events. The Award ceremony was brief but several of the recipients were surprised when their names were called out. The evening ended with the band Silverlode playing until midnight.

The Commodore announced his “Salute Free” zone and reminded everyone he would be keeping a keen eye out for all the Club boats this coming boating season.

Social Committee News

The  Social  Committee  is  looking  for  volunteers...  not  a  lifetime  commitment  but  we’re  gathering an email list of people who might be interested in helping out in some capacity.  We’re  also  looking for ideas for upcoming events...

Scotch tasting for Robbie Burns Day perhaps? Indoor  “Tailgate  Party”  on  Superbowl  Sunday? A glamorous evening at the Academy Awards? Dinner  &  Dancing  at  Bacci’s  or  Fredericos??   Wine Tasting to choose a new Club House Wine? Club Member Artisan Show? Fashion Show? Theme dinners? Chili Cook-off?

Drop by the Clubhouse Saturday Dec 1 while  we’re  decorating  from  10-3pm or bring your favorite appetizer to share for “Appy”  Hour  from  4-6pm.  We’ll  take  a  “straw”  vote  on which events might be the most popular or you can add your ideas. Leave me your email  address  if  you’re  interested  in  volunteering.  And  if  you  can’t  make  it  but  are  interested send me an email today with  details  on  how  you’d  like  to  help.

Children’s Christmas Party is December 9 from 11:30-2p in the clubhouse. Sign Up Sheets are at the Club – please note the last day to sign up is Thursday Dec 6th so we have enough time to order the food in advance. Thanks.

Hope to see you on the 1st! Oh, and by the way, if you have some gently used but still nice  Christmas  decorations  that  you’d  like  to  donate  to  the  club  please  leave  them  in  the hall closet as you enter the club labelled  “Social  Committee”  on or before December 1st – anything  we  don’t  use  will  be  donated  to  charity  for  others  to  enjoy  before  the  holidays.

Happy Holidays! Many thanks,

Karen Shankey Social Committee Chair

BYC Town Hall MeetingStatus of BURNCO McNab Valley Aggregate MineDecember 11th, 7:30 – 9:30 PM @ BYC ClubhouseGuest Speakers – Future of Howe Sound Society

On November 17th the Future of Howe Sound Society held an “Up The Noise” social evening in Lions Bay that was well attended by over 120 affected residents from around Howe Sound. As a founding member of this Society the Burrard Yacht Club should be proud of the momentum this group is now attaining around local issues such as:

• Getting media attention focused on the derelict former BC Ferry moored off Anvil Island that helped to clear the path for its sale and removal.

• Focusing attention on land use plans in Howe Sound that could be considered detrimental to the long term overall best interests of the vast majority of current and future residential, recreational, and eco-tourism users in Howe Sound.

• Creating a forum for Community Groups surrounding Howe Sound to come together in their desire for a Comprehensive Land Use Plan for this area.

On Tuesday, December 11th @ 7:30 PM please join us in the Clubhouse for a social evening with representatives from the other founding members of the Future of Howe Sound Society to learn more about our common shared interests. Member’s chit bar (beer and wine) will be open at 7:00 and seating will be limited.

Thank You,Lea BancroftPast Commodore

Sagas of Sammy Seagull

If you’re gonna snag a tender towline having Spur brand line cutters attached to your shafts is a good idea even if it means Rick Grantham’s tender is being towed

closer to Grantham’s Landing than originally. The Granthams, by the way, have a boat cat that works docks looking for mice and other treats to bring to the boat. Too bad the cat didn’t visit Tommy Simpson’s Taña when an Ekins swallow landed on Tommy’s couch. Seems the swallow had been there a while judging by the deposits. Later in the summer, after Frisco the cat learned such tricks as releasing a live mouse inside her masters’ boat, he decided to occasionally leave a well chewed one too.

Back to those Spur brand line cutters. They would have saved Henry Gerber a dive under Karen Gail. Seems Henry disrupted the gill fishing fleet by snagging an entire fish net.

When Phil Gustin learned his bother in law, Dave was accompanying Stuart for a cruise to Ekins he said, “Don’t scratch the paint.” Funny since it was Phil who grounded Dorothy Ann on the Mosquito Creek sandbar. Of interest is Stuart is living in the Point Grey home he bought from Alondra builder and Dave Cook’s dad, Jack in 1953. Purchase price? $7,500.

Anyone with an explanation why the entire contents of the Dykeman’s Avonski was on deck in Squirrel Cove? It couldn’t have been rain because the only rain we got was during the lightning and wind storm that modified the swim grid of Lisa Sea.

That was pretty good of Funtime skipper, Scott Graham to fix the flat and wash Gord Kleaman’s truck before Gord arrived home from a long vacation. That point in time is likely the cleanest you’ll see that truck.

Getting a new boat is pretty exciting and Scott Thompson is pretty happy with Lumière. At least he was until he found that the big boat takes a little more water

than his speed boat. That curled propeller was a result of Phil’s sandbar near the gas bar next door.

It was at Croker Island that he decided to blow out the soot which did nothing but stir up the crud in the tanks and stall his single Cat. So our skipper side-tied his dinghy and headed for the Clementine dock at perhaps more velocity than required. He bounced off the swim ladder and then bounced off the dock a few times before coming to a rest near the gazebo. Whew, that was interesting. Oh, there’s Sammy. I better ask him for anonymity. And that’s why Sammy is not telling you who this A-docker is. Let’s just call him the Bouncing Czech.

Meet a Dunker (or two). When Frank and Dawn-Marie Plumptre made the inevitable adjustment from sail to power, their choice was Blue Horizon, a pretty blue and tan Ranger Tug. They bought it from the Port Alberni Ranger dealer and had her floating along side the Alberni concrete floating bridge breakwater for commissioning. She came with a rope and chain anchor package and Frank figured the long dock was ideal for marking the rode. As he pulled everything out of the chain locker he walked backwards to see the full length. Seems the full length of rode was greater than the full length of the breakwater and he simply backed off the end and into the frigid Alberni Canal. Good thing he didn’t let go of the rode because he needed it to haul himself out…those breakwaters float pretty high you know.

Meanwhile back at good ol’ BYC, Rod McDonald had a blue cart loaded on the narrow finger beside Paesano. As Gail squeezed by she too tested the water temps. She was there a while as she had to swim around the boat and under the dinghy to get to the swim ladder.

The Hydrographer Award is locked up. When a certain sloop first mate discovered secrets are difficult to keep at BYC, she decided she would do the reporting. Next month you will get the details of a serious grounding and other misadventures of this sailing team.
