As in a traditional Mexican style dinner we had entertainers playing table by table. This added to theambience of the dinner, the room was colourfully decorated as were the patrons. It would appear ourmembers when given a theme have a lot of enjoyment enhancing the idea and the creativity is alive.Let the games begin.

DON’T MISS OUT ON BYC RECIPROCAL MOORAGE LOCATIONS Jule Hopkins, BoardSecretary and Reciprocal Moorage Co-ordinator

BYC has some excellent reciprocal relationships with clubs not only in this province butthroughout the US. David and I have enjoyed many of these reciprocal moorages on theGulf Islands and Vancouver Island. We have always found them to be welcoming andhelpful. Members of the clubs we visit, often tell us how they love coming to BYC for theirreciprocal usage as our members go out of their way to be helpful even driving them overto the sea bus and up to the grocery stores. So, way to go members!

The Board encourages you to visit our BYC Members website http://www.burrardyachtclub.com/ - once you are on the Members site you can click onReciprocals on the left side of the page and up will come all of the Reciprocal Clubs wehave relationships with.

You can print out the ones you may like to visit, each has the details for accessing andentering the reciprocal moorage required for taking advantage of that location.

Enjoy one of the many benefits of being a BYC Member and visit a location or two on yourboating trip.

RUNNING THE SHIP “The Nelson Way”It’s hard to put down the sword of knowledge gained in the past, as it is athing that protects us from repeating mistakes and provides the path forcontinued success. All successful fraternities have a common denominator. They have dedicated ‘doers’ without whose energy and input clubs andfraternities would falter and no longer exist. Many times the sword is passedforward to the next generation.

If there is one pivotal moment in the BYC history it was the events that leadto Independence Day from the Rowing Cub in Coal Harbour. The end result isour current success on the North Shore at 10 Gostick Place. It was BYC’sBattle of Trafalgar. Just like the famous Lord Nelson of 1805, we too had acaptain who fought valiantly to release BYC from tyranny. THE ROWING CLUBIN ITS ACTIONS WAS TYRANICAL (this could be the subject of a futurehistorical article). The successful extraction from their clutches was due tothe commanding of the fleet by Malc Nelson, the Commodore on that day inOctober of 1977. He was supported by a strong crew of like-mindeddedicated BYC members who were equal to the task.

A first memory for me of the Nelsons was when Malc and Janet and their daughter Sharon and son Mac movedto their new house they had built on Harris Road near Deep Cove. Now I grew up in Dollarton/Deep Cove andmet Sharon when she was about fourteen because my best friend Paul had eyes for her. As it turns out myfuture wife Penny was Sharon’s first cousin.

At that time there was no James Nelson. He was yet to appear on the horizon. Malc and Janet were enthusiastboaters in the BYC life, which led to a very busy time. Malc had built a 25 ft plywood cabin cruiser (I think itwas a Glen- L design) powered by twin 35 hp Elto outboards. It was a big boat for the day and it was moored inthe bay in front of their house. I recently asked Paul Perkins, (now a BYC member} who later became SharonNelson’s husband, if he had memories of the Nelson’s boating when he was dating Sharon. Evidently he wastoo focused on Sharon to remember much, but he did pass this on. Apparently the Nelsons had built a ship’sslide cradle on their beach to haul the boat in and out. In order to allow the cradle to slide up the tracks Malcgreased them with lard. That didn’t work well as they had a ditsy Chesapeake dog “Sean “who licked the skidsclean before, after and between launches. Around this time their second son Jamie was born. He was truly aboater’s blessing. He became their first mate on their new yacht “Lazy Daze” a 27 ft Chris Constellation. Malclater sold it to Past Commodore Gary Kleaman. Gary repowered her and she went from a 10 knot to a 25cruise. (Gary was not a member YET)

The Nelsons next vessel was a fast house boat. It was a sister ship to the restaurateur Frank Baker’s boat.Frank festooned his with hanging baskets everywhere and crystal chandlers. There must have been a lot oftinkling crystal glass underway. At high speed she left a trail of flower petals in her wake. Frank Baker’s WestVan restaurant was renowned for James Bond’s Aston Martin languishing in a glass case in the lobby. Anyway,Malc named their new boat the “NELSONS”. Formally she had been a water taxi in the Shearwater area. Hepulled out the bus seats, re did the interior and she became a Commodore’s yacht and flagship of BYC. Herprevious passengers had been loggers and people of the north coast, a hardy bunch. She had now come froman ugly duckling to a white swan.

Jamie as he was known by close family and James to BYC members as the BYC Facility Manager, becameentrenched in BYC and in the forefront of the BYC Juniors. James would have been more than the fly on thewall for the tempest that surrounded the exit of Coal Harbour from the Rowing Club. He was a Junior when thefirst flag was raised on our muddy North Van ground along with Chris Lapoint in 1977. I know all this from

studying the pictures in the BYC roster and noting the duck boardwalk over the mud. Check it out. Those weredaunting days for the Club.

Before becoming a full member James was going to the university. I was on the BYC Board at that time andwe were looking for staff to manage the BYC facility. James let it be known that he would like to be consideredfor the position on a full time basis. I was perplexed by this as he was on his way into a computer sciencemajor. I did my best to discourage him as ‘what kind of a future’ could there be for a young man workingfor a struggling yacht club. WE ARE ALL SO GRATEFUL THAT HE STUCK TO HIS GUNS.

At that time BYC needed a clubhouse. We had a succession of things happening like breakwaters, constantupgrades, electrical, new shelters, etc. and James was there. Then there were the new outstations. All werebig projects. There was always the Changing of the Chairs with new Executive. James has always been acareful politician, guiding with a gentle hand BYC business. He is Omni present at all BYC events. As a BYCmember and employee he is ‘the go to person’ for all BYC things. Although there have been tricky things. Likeat a Special Meeting when a Commodore’s wife said that it should be done such & such a way because Jamessaid so! I knew it was not as it appeared and so I suggested to her that James drives the BYC bus butoccasionally the road is a little slippery. It’s not always possible to judge all the curves, ups & downs andtricky traffic stuff of the Club. None of us can count all the late night calls that he receives about the docksbreaking loose in horrific storms, boats rolling on the grid, putting out boat fires and some fires betweenmembers. He’s just always there with never a complaint. He just GET’S HER DONE! It’s the Nelson Way.

There are also personal challenges that are not in the job description. He spearheads predicted log racing, BYCJuniors events, the Sailing programs, the Keels and Wheels, Family weekends, safety inspections etc., etc. Hestick handles to make the event come off in a spectacular way.

If you peer around the corner there he is greasing the skids, making it happen. Maybe as time passes and withaging things may take him a smidge longer. James has been very successful in life, not the least of which isbeing the father of three talented and beautiful daughters. They too have been brought up in the BYC NelsonWay.

As to Past Commodore Malc Nelson (his dad), not only can we thank him for such a great son, but it is time tohonour him and the other pioneers who brought us to Gostick.

On a personal note I think if we thank James out loud he would be very shy about this insert in the Trident.Just think it in your mind when you see him bounding through the parking lot, running down the docks on aBYC mission, A LARGE THANK YOU James for keeping the Ship running true and on course the “NelsonWay”.

Sailpast 2017 – Saturday May 6th

I am proud to say that Burrard Yacht Club had a very successful Sailpast on Saturday May 6th.

The weather wasn’t perfect but near perfect! We had sunny skies with a little bit of a chill inthe evening. Our procession was led by piper Joe MacDonald, followed by RCMP Staff Sgt. PaulDuffy.

Approximately, 200 people attended our opening ceremonies in the BYC parking lot. As usual,

Page 8: BYC Trident 2017 6June 2017 The B YC Tr ident • 10 Go st ic k Pl ac e • Vanc o uver , B C V9M 3G3 • (604) 988-0817 Awesome memories of our 2017 - 85th annual BYC Sailpast, yes

And sailpast we did! With approximately 70 plus boat saluting the commodore.

The evening culminated with a great baron of beef dinner served by our own Marko Puharich withapproximately 250 dinners served. Following music by our DJ Greg Hanbury.

As for all BYC events, this could not have been pulled off without the assistance of many, many people. The listis too long to contain here. Approximately 26 individuals and their teams have been thanked by email or byphone. However, to name a few groups: BYC Board Members (lead boats, turn boats), Rick and Bev Granthamplus their crew: getting the shore facilities ready, Larry and Jule: VIP Reception, Cliff Taylor and crew: memberreception, BYC Socials Committee, Dawn-Marie and her assistants: break water decorations. We had fullparticipation of our Junior members with our flag raising ceremony (with Emma Thornton singing O’ Canada). This was much appreciated. Finally our Office and Maintenance staff, who undertook many tasks to make thisevent happen.

Respectfully Submitted,

Frank Plumptre, Vice Commodore

I expect we will continuewith minor items over the next months and years. We have received a report on how to improve the ease of use and reliability of the Clubhouse Audio/Videosystem. The focus will be to change out the system controller with a unit which is more graphic in nature, easier to use, permanently fixed in place and not dependent on battery power. The bulk of the existingsystem will stay, though some additional minor cabling will be added and a fan to reduce the equipmentcabinet heat issue. The board has agreed to the preliminary budget for Phase 2, new south wall folding doors and dual sidefireplace, and Phase 3, the deck roof. The final approval will not be granted until June at which time wecan formalize the schedules, resources and equipment ordering. We are pushing to start Phase 2 in theearly fall.Shore Work PartiesThe April 1st and 29th Work Parties saw two groups of members and maintenance staff participate. Allmajor items regarding Spring cleanup and preparation for Sailpast were completed along with minoritems such as painting Sammy Seagull. A large portion of the work was related to gardening and planting, the results are all obvious. Some of the older planters were replaced with white plastic planters whichshould give many years of service; these can be seen around the ramp to the docks. They can be readilymoved for special events. The new hanging baskets are also reusable over many years.Recycling FacilityThe board approved the budget to upgrade our recycling facility and move the bottle return collectionfrom the north end of B dock up with the current recycling facility in the parking lot. We are only at thepreliminary planning stage but do expect to put this in place in September. We will be looking for inputfrom additional members, besides the four who were initially driving the project. It is most likely that aFall Work Party will take on some of the work.Dinner in the SkyWe were approached by a group recently to host their Dinner in the Sky event for the entire month ofJuly using the green area of our parking lot. This involved lifting 20 diners, seated around a table, 150’into the air using a crane every day in July that conditions allowed. After a presentation at the AprilDirector meeting and ongoing negotiations the group decided they could not meet our Liability Insuranceneeds. It is my understanding that they will utilize Mosquito Creek Marina for their event this year thoughthey would have much preferred BYC. If they are successful this year I expect we will hear from them in2018 and they will be better prepared to meet the obligations with BYC.

Silva Bay Marina – New Marina Manager

Recently Ms. Yolanda King has taken over as Marina Manager of our leased Silva Bay Marina, which includesour outstation docks. She has sent this letter introducing herself and has provided some updates on the facilitiesthere.

Thanks,David GagnonOutstations Director

March 20th, 2017

To our Outstation Moorage Members:

For those of you that I have not had the pleasure of meeting yet, I would like to introduce myself. I havetaken over managing Silva Bay Marina, now that Jenny Ireland has begun her well-deserved retirement.Although I am very grateful that she continues to help me behind the scenes, as there is quite a lot involvedin this transition.

I have begun sending out a newsletter to our members, and would be happy to include you in this mail-out.Just let me know, and I will add your e-mail address to the list.

There is some important information from our January 2017 edition, that I wish to share with you at this time.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Notes from the Wharf

Happy New Year to everyone! I hope you all had occasion to relax, spend time with loved ones, and maybeeven do a little fishing over the holidays… whether you were down South somewhere sunny or getting a briskblast of Canadian winter.

Here at the marina, we are busy tackling our “To Do” list, before the new season of sailing is in full swing. So just a few things to tell you this month, before getting back to the many projects we have on the go.

There are a lot of changes taking place at Silva Bay and I am very excited about the upcoming season. Wehave done upgrades to the Laundry room, and are about to begin renovations to the washroom and showers. My plan was to have everything finished by now, but with several power outages and more snow than weexpected this winter, Mother Nature had a different agenda than I did! But we shall persevere and hope tohave everything ready to show off by this May Long Weekend.

Update on the Facilities Building:

We continue with renovations to the facilities building and look forward to re-opening as soon as possible. The 4 washers and 3 dryers remain, and will continue to operate with tokens, which can be purchased at themarina office for $3 each.

I am also excited to welcome you into the new mini lounge area that we have created. It is now stocked withcomplimentary gourmet teas and hot chocolate for you to come in and enjoy during the inclement weather. There is a microwave and kettle available for your use, as well as a large capacity coffee percolator if you arehosting a group. When done, simply leave any dirty dishes in the tray and we will take care of that for you.

We have a lovely young lady named Katrina, who takes great pride in keeping the facilities clean and tidy. She comes late in the evenings so that the hours the facility is temporarily closed, will cause the least amountof inconvenience. These hours change depending on seasonal demand, so I will keep you updated on hercleaning schedule.

The staff at Silva Bay is fully committed to keeping these facilities well maintained for all our members toenjoy. If at any time, you find a washer or dryer not working, or if any other part of the facilities is unkempt,or needs attention, don’t hesitate to let a staff member know right away.

Please note: Once re-opened in 2017, this building will be for use by Members ONLY.

There is a new Electronic lock on the door, that requires a passcode, which will be given to all our members. We have also opened up a new washroom at the side of the building for use by the general public. This noweliminates any need to give access to the Private facilities building, and we kingly ask that members do notgive out the code.

To avoid any inconvenience to those Yacht Club Members who might arrive at the marina after office hours,we have decided to leave the facilities code, as well as the Wireless Internet password, in each OutstationDock Box. When members sign in at their respective slip, they will see this information. We may need tochange the codes from time to time, and hope that everyone will understand that this is necessary to ensurethat the facilities remain secure for the enjoyment of all our members.

Waste Removal

Annual members, Outstation, and Transient moorage guests will no longer be asked to take their garbage upto the dumpsters. Instead, you may drop off your garbage and recyclables inside the facilities building. Youwill see designated bins at the end of the hallway, just past the Ladies room. If it is at all possible, could youplease separate your garbage in to the appropriate bins. This will be a great help to Katrina, as she will bemanaging the removal of our recycling.

Marina Office

We have set up a new Marina office just next door to the old one, where you will see some familiar faces andsome new ones. We hope you will come in and utilize our new Complimentary DVD collection that containsover 500 movies. Please feel free to sign out as many as you like. When finished you may either return themto the office, or leave them in your Outstation Lock Box.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That’s about it from the marina. Now I will pick up my paintbrush and a BIG handful of cleaning rags… (I amvery messy) … and get back to work on the renovations. This is definitely NOT as easy as they make it lookon all those “fixer-upper-type” TV shows…

I very much look forward to meeting all of you in the upcoming months.

Silva Bay Marina – Local’s Guide to Gabriola

I was talking to a friend, John, who is not a BYC member but belongs to the North Shore Power and Sail Squadron. He is a long time mooring resident of Silva Bay so I asked him for some tips and “insider” information regardingthings to do in the local area such that I could share them with our BYC membership.

John was kind enough to put the following together, which I am sharing with you in case you are planning onvisiting our Silva Bay Outstation.

Thanks,David GagnonOutstations Director

1. Burrard Yacht Clubs slips will, I think, be in the dock area numbered 5. These docks belong to Silva BayMarina. This is the larger of the two marinas and has a liquor store, a pub and a restaurant with a largishoutside patio. The patio is very pleasant in the summer. The restaurant/pub is currently managed by Robertof "Roberts Place", another restaurant on the island, and the food is more varied and better than most pubfood. They usually have live entertainment on Friday evenings. In the summer a Kayak rental businessoperates from the docks.

2. The second marina is Pages Marina owned and operated by Gloria and Ken Hatfield. It has a small

Page 17: BYC Trident 2017 6June 2017 The B YC Tr ident • 10 Go st ic k Pl ac e • Vanc o uver , B C V9M 3G3 • (604) 988-0817 Awesome memories of our 2017 - 85th annual BYC Sailpast, yes

bookstore (selling a variety of books including novels and various marine charts, tide tables etc.), acampground,, showers, laundry and rental cabins. It also rents motor scooters for campers/boaters that wantto get around the island. Dinghy sailing lessons for children operate from their docks. [Note: best way to getfrom Silva Bay marina to Pages is by boat or the walking trail. The distance by road is about 5 or 6 times asfar as it is by water. ]

3. Both Pages and Silva Bay Marina have gas docks.

4. Between the two Marinas is the Silva Bay shipyard, which has both a 12 ton travel lift and an 80 tonmarine railway. It’s owned and operated by Don and Vicki Maynard and they work primarily on fishing andrecreational boats. The shipyard has a small chandlery.

5. The Ship building school currently teaches people how to build small wooden boats - mostly sailing dinghiesas far as I know - and to repair and restore wooden boats.

6. The Silva Bay Inn in a small motel (7 suites/rooms) with the dock space marked 2. The Inn used to have agrocery store but I don't think that is open at the moment. There is a good full serve grocery store (VillageFoods) on the island at the northern end. They deliver Tuesday through Saturday. Call before noon to placean order if you want it delivered that day. 1-250-247-8755.

7. The dock space off Tugboat Island and marked 6 and the area the labelled "Yacht Club" is an outstation forthe Royal Vancouver Yacht Club.

8. Both Pages and Silva Bay Marina have transient moorage dock space and, as far as I know, so does theinn, although their dock space may be reserved for guests of the inn. Many boats anchor in the waters off theMarinas and behind Tugboat Island. Pages Marina has some permanent mooring buoys that they rent. I amnot sure if Silva Bay Marina has any.

9. Silva Bay is a very good jumping off point for cruising in the Gulf Islands. It’s only a few (approximately3nm) nautical miles from Gabriola Pass, the more northerly of the passes (Gabriola, Porlier, Active andBoundary) from the Strait of Georgia to the more sheltered waters of the gulf islands. It is, in my opinionanyway, easier to transit than Porlier and Active passes. Silva Bay is a good stopping off /refueling pointregardless of whether you are heading to the gulf islands or about to cross the Strait. Once through GabriolaPass, Pirates Cove is in sight and it’s only a couple of nautical miles to DeCourcy Island the anchorage anddocks of Pirates Cove. Montague Harbour (Galiano Island) is a short cruise once you are through the pass.

10. Gabriola has a taxi service and bus service. The buses (Gertie and Gus) cost a toonie and take pets. Theydo a loop around the island and can be caught on South Road at Silva Bay if you want to go to the Village (seemore below at 13. re what is in the Village). The schedule is usually posted on the liquor store window. Thedrivers are volunteers and usually very knowledgeable about what's on and places to see.

11. There is seaplane service between Silva Bay, Vancouver and various other places.

12. Three fishing charter companies operate out of Silva Bay (if anybody is interested in that I would suggestDoug Hamilton of Hasta Mañana Charters). The North east coast of Gabriola Island (known as the Grande)and the area around Thrasher Rock are considered good fishing grounds for ling cod and salmon - both areascan be reached by dinghy from Silva Bay.

13. The Village: Every Saturday morning of the summer there is a farmers market at the junction of Northand South Road near the Village, selling local produce, bread etc., and the works of local artisans. In theVillage: Tourist information, Mad Rona's coffee shop (Coffees, soups, sandwiches, pastries), a variety of

shops, including the grocery store, lumber yard, hardware store (which has a lot of stuff), two liquor stores, pharmacy, clothing and sports store and a couple of restaurants. The restaurants, such as Roberts Place andWoodfire aren't fine dining but are decent - Roberts for breakfast and Woodfire for dinner.

14. The island is home to a fair number of artists/artisans and throughout the summer many of the artists’studios are open. There is a four or five day Theatre Festival in August (tickets are available at a booth in theVillage or in advance through the Gabriola Arts Council website), and outdoor musical events, such as"Concert on the Green" at the Golf Course. Thanksgiving Weekend is a Studio Tour with more than 35 openstudios.

15. The Golf Course rents everything you need to play, you can play 9 or 18 holes (back 9 is a variation onthe front 9 but it’s a pleasant little course), then you can eat and/or drink in their restaurant. The courseclaims to serve the best beer and burgers on the island.

16. There is an alpaca farm on North Road just before the Village with small ponies and children’s activities.

17. Gabriola Museum is also near the Village.

18. Of all the Gulf Islands Gabriola has the most public access beaches. Twin Beaches, Drumbeg (can see theyachts transiting the pass up close) , Whalebone, Sandwell. Gertie or Gus the bus will take you to the closestpoint and then you would have to walk from there.

19. Miles and miles of walking trails and off leash areas for pets.

It’s interesting how many boats exit by myboat and sound two or three toots, or a shortone or none at all.

What this BYC sign all about?

MEET YOUR BURRARD YACHT CLUB BOARD

Thank you for the chance to introduce myself and let you know a little more about one more of your boardmembers.

I started boating with my father when I was very young, we had a cottage at TsawwassenBeach, long before the ferry terminal was built. My father was an dedicated fisherman andI was privileged to spend a great deal of time with him on the water fishing in his pre-war19-foot mahogany speed boat, both on the Sunshine coast and the waters off Tsawwassenbeach. My oldest memory of time spent in that boat was when we were fishing out wherethe ferry terminal is now located and the next thing you know we are in a school of“blackfish” the old timers name for Orca Whales. We were caught right in the middle of thepod as they swam beside us. My dad cut the engine and we drifted quietly there as theyswam on. I have loved watching whales from a distance ever since then! As teenagers, wesure enjoyed that boat for water skiing and using it as a raft to jump from on ourswimming days.

I was fortunate to meet a man and now my husband, David, who also was a water /boat lover, even thoughthe ocean was a new experience for him, as he had spent his youth and early adulthood on lakes in Ontario.David had a wooden two masted sloop that he sailed on Lake Simcoe. In 1980, we began our boating lifetogether on a 24-foot sailboat but as boaters do we (or mainly David) got the 2 feet more bug and over theyears owned 4 sailboats – each a little larger than the other. The best boat move being, from a head underthe cushions of the V Berth to an enclosed head. I use to have to wake David in the night to move over andhold up the cushions while I used the head, but that soon got to be old and David then offered me a bucket inthe cockpit to use, yeah right huh ladies! Our girls have some good stories of how mom handled the sailboats, with one story being one that is still brought out to laugh at, like when I became the mooring line between themooring buoy and the bow of the boat at Sidney Spit, with David yelling at me to not let go as another boatwas trying to get that same buoy! I won’t tell you what I was yelling.

As sail boaters often do, we moved from a sailboat to a trawler – we have been enjoying our 34-foot trawler,Grand C’s (named for our grandchildren) for the last 10 years. We have enjoyed many summers sailing andmotoring our pacific coastal waters over the years. When we joined BYC, in early 2006, we found not only like-minded boating companions, wonderful events and the best ever outstations and reciprocal moorage, as wellas safe and secure club moorage for our boat.

David and I have so enjoyed membership in BYC and it gives me such pleasure to be able to give back to theclub as the Board Secretary. Under Commodore Mogridge’s leadership and the supportive guidance of allboard members, I have experience a welcoming and helping environment on the Board.

Jule Hopkins, Board Secretary

From the editor- Thank you so much Trident contributors. I want to especially thank Dave Thompson for hisexcellent article on our indispensable James Nelson.

Sometime this month we will have a box on the west side of the clubhouse stocked with Tridents for thosewho still like to read it the old fashion way.

Keep those contributions coming and have a great summer boating. [email protected]
