THIRTY -THIRD SUNDAY IN

ORDINARY TIME

NOVEMBER 13, 2016

First Reading: Malachi 3:19-20a The prophet Malachi warned that the time would come when all the evil people would be punished. He then speaks of the arrival of "the sun of justice, with its healing rays," believed by most to mean Jesus.

Second Reading: 2 Thessalonians 3:7-12 Some of the Thessalonians claimed Christ's return was imminent, so they stopped working and asked others for food. Paul describes his willingness to work, so that he would not impose on others. He encourages them to follow his example and earn their own living.

Gospel: Luke 21:5-19 Jesus warns of the persecution all Christians will face because of him, and how some will even be put to death. Yet he says they will not be harmed because "by patient endurance you will save your lives." If Jesus' followers are loyal, they will be resurrected and their suffering will end.

PARISH THANKSGIVING CELEBRATION

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 21st – 7:30 PM Our Parish Thanksgiving Service will be held in the church beginning at 7:30 PM. It will be co-sponsored by our two biggest parish groups, the Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) families and our CYO basketball families. The event is geared to all of our parishioners, both individuals and families, young and not so young alike. We all have many reasons to give THANKS TO GOD. In a world where so many have so little while we enjoy so much, many of us will want to set aside some quality time to be together as a faith community in order to give honor, glory and THANKS to God for the many blessings we enjoy every day. (Please don’t be too busy for God.) We thank God for the gifts of Faith, Hope and Love, especially the love we share with God and with our family members and friends. We give thanks for the gifts of food and drink, clothing and shelter, quality medical care, a top notch education for our children. We give special thanks for living in America, the land of opportunity, where we enjoy religious liberty, freedom of speech and more rights and privileges than people in most parts of the world could ever imagine or will ever know. Our parish family service will begin with many of our school children processing around the church with special homemade posters and drawings depicting what they believe to be the spirit of Thanksgiving. Next, we will enjoy a scripture service with select readings and a brief homily. This will be followed by a procession of gifts to the altar as our adults and children bring forth food or monetary offerings for the less fortunate of our community. When I was hungry, when I was thirsty….Whatsoever you did for the least of my loved ones that you did unto me.” Following our Thanksgiving celebration, everyone is invited over to the gym to “break bread” with our parish family and enjoy the bounty of our sharing table laden with homemade hot and cold hors d’oeuvres and desserts brought in by those participating in the celebration. We will provide more details in next week’s bulletin. Meanwhile, please save the date! Many thanks to CYO Director, Kieran McCormack and PREP Coordinator Marie Gartner and their volunteers who will be working together on this wonderful parish-wide event. _____________________________________________

PARISH 50TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT

A HUGE SUCCESS Friday evening, November 4th, well over two hundred people came out to enjoy our free anniversary concert. Choir Director and parish tenor Matthew Surapine, conducted a two hour, fun-filled and highly diversified concert which treated the audience to a variety of Broadway and opera favorites, Irish and Italian music and songs and a few selections performed on our house organ and our recently acquired baby grand piano. In addition, we enjoyed a great performance from well known musician Eileen Ivers who played the fiddle. A large group of young musicians, singers and dancers from the Pearl River School of Irish Music performed for us and they were great. We are especially grateful to Mr. Jim Russell, Choir Director at St. Paul, Congers, for his wonderful solos as well as a number of duets with Matthew Surapine and also for joining the St. Paul Choir with our own choir for a couple of very impressive combined chorus performances. Matthew’s very talented daughter Gisella joined us for the evening and the audience also enjoyed seeing our own Fr. John Palatucci who played his upright base during several numbers. Everyone who attended the concert received a free raffle ticket for a huge basket of mixed lottery tickets. The winning ticket was drawn during our hospitality hour which was held in the parish hall immediately following the concert. The lucky raffle winner was Paul Mattern, one of our parish Pancake Breakfast Committee workers. Many thanks to Marie Maher and all of the members of the parish Hospitality Committee who set up and provided coffee and refreshments for the huge crowd of almost 150 who came together to enjoy our St. Aedan hospitality. _____________________________________________

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks

on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
