Nouvelle Vie Fact Sheet What is the Nouvelle Vie Youth Corps? The International Association for Human Values (IAHV) is building Haitian youth leadership capacity to sustainably re-build Haiti - socially, environmentally, and economically – by forming the Nouvelle Vie Youth Corps. The Nouvelle Vie Youth Corps is a network of Haitian young adults trained to sustainably serve Haiti’s needs and to identify and create agents of change within Haitian communities. The Youth Corps empowers individuals within communities to manage their doubts, fear, and trauma, and trains them to develop agricultural and economic opportunities from locally available resources. The Youth Corps will also act as a hub for Haitian and international community members to gather and share knowledge, best practices, and resources. How does the Youth Corps function? The Youth Corps will be trained for 3 months as certified Art of Living Trauma Relief trainers, Permaculture trainers, Yoga teachers. After their training, they will serve full-time for 2 years. They will live together, travel to communities and work together in small groups. The Youth Corps’ service is: Community Training : 1) Art of Living and yoga classes: teaches communities to manage their trauma and feel empowered 2) Permaculture Courses: teaches families to grow their own food, compost, and manage waste and water Community Fieldwork : 1) Permaculture demonstration gardens: teaching gardens that local farmers can use to train communities and expand for generations 2) Service projects: develop local community leaders to create solutions for social challenges rather than waiting for solutions to come from the outside How is the money spent? Nouvelle Vie runs almost entirely on volunteers who donate their time and services to make the program succeed. This drives our administrative costs down significantly. 96% of every tax-deductible donation directly supports the training, support and service of the Youth Corps. This includes: food, transportation, communication, materials, and training costs. 3% goes towards general administrative costs and 1% towards marketing and fundraising. IAHV has been certified as “Best in America” by Independent Charities of America and is an accredited charity of the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Once people donate, they will receive a letter from IAHV for tax-deduction purposes. They will automatically be signed onto our mailing list, to receive our monthly newsletter. What is the International Association for Human Values?IAHV is an international humanitarian and educational NGO founded in 1997. Its mission is to promote human values of love, commitment and service by building local capacity to respond to community needs. We offer leadership workshops and service projects on Sustainable Development, Disaster and Trauma Relief, Women’s Empowerment, and Youth Leadership Development Programs. www.iahv.orgWhy should people donate to Nouvelle Vie? What makes us different?1) We were working in Haiti before the earthquake, since 2007. We have experience and people we know and trust in the country. 2) We are sustainable and empower Haitians. While the Haitian wealthy elite traditionally represents Haiti to international community, our youth leaders come from the communities they serve. This allows our Haitian leaders to move faster, understand the issues better, and create novel solutions. 3) We have a plan to transfer leadership of the entire program to Haitians within 5 years. Rather than remaining an international aid program, it will be a local4) We are addressing the massive trauma needs that the earthquake has created, which are beginning to manifest in violence and crime, especially towards women. IAHV has implemented trauma relief intervention after almost every disaster, including Asia Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, Gujarat Earthquake, Iraq, Palestine, Kosovo. We have experience and research supporting the effectiveness of our Trauma Relief Programs. 5) We teach sustainable community development, rather than providing handouts. We have solutions for sustainably rebuilding food systems and infrastructure that engage Haitian communities, rather than "fixing" their problems and giving handouts. This is more empowering and sustainable in the long-run. 6) You can directly see the people your money is supporting and the work they’re doing, rather than giving to a big anonymous organization.
