BMS ATHLETICS

In middle school sports, our spring season is about to begin. The first track practice date is Monday, April 1. A parent meeting will be held on Thursday, April 4th at 5:10 PM in the Beach gymnasium. Please contact Mr. Knight at [email protected] or Mr. Schmann [email protected] for any specific track ques-tions. We have seven track meets scheduled this year, with three of those being here in Chelsea. The home meets take place on April 22, May 2, and May 6.

We will need parent volun-teers to help with track events again this year. We will also be running the concession stand again this year. Proceeds from concession sales will benefit middle school athletics. Mr. Knight and Mr. Schumann will be getting out info on sign-ups for con-cessions, ticket taking, along with help for track and field events. As always, thanks to all who volunteer their time to help Beach Middle School Athlet-ics.

Our 7th/8th lacrosse team will also be in action throughout the spring. Please contact coach Mikal Nelson at [email protected] for any specific lacrosse information including the first day of practice.

Middle school tennis will be competing this spring as well. All in-quiries about the middle school tennis program should be made to coach Bri-an Atkinson at [email protected].

Finally, a reminder that mid-dle school sports are open to 7th and 8th grade students and a current physi-cal must be on file. Students also need to be in good academic standing in order to participate.

Thanks and as always, Jason Morris Middle School AD

GOBULLDOGS!

FIELD HOCKEY Chelsea Field Hockey welcomes beginner and experienced youth to participate in spring recreation teams, June Whip-It Camp and fall teams at Beach Middle School (7th-8th) and Chelsea High School (9th-12th). TENNIS AVAILABLE FOR 4TH-6TH

GRADE STUDENTS THROUGH

COMMUNITY ED

Hello everyone, my name

is Brian Atkinson and I wanted to make you aware of a cool new opportunity this spring.

A few years ago Beach Middle school added tennis as a team sport for 7th and 8th grad-ers. We are now expanding that program and adding a develop-mental team for kids in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades!

Practices will begin on Friday, April 5, and will run Monday, Wednesday and Friday until the end of May. We will usually start at 5:00 or 5:30 pm based on court availability and will run for approximately one hour and fifteen minutes.

Practice will vary be-tween being at Beach middle school and Chelsea High school.

Coaches are myself, Coach Rahn Rosentretter (the high school boys coach), and a host of high school helpers.

The focus of the program will be on fun and skill develop-ment. There may be a match or two against nearby teams, but most of the match play will take place in practice.

The cost of the program will be only $60, and that can be paid through the Community Ed department starting March 23.

If you have any ques-tions, feel free to email me at [email protected] Thanks! Brian Atkinson [email protected]

INTERNATIONAL CLUB

Come join the BMS International Club to explore cultures with fun and interac-tive activities! Specifically, we will be cook-ing authentic international foods, creating crafts, and celebrating cultural holidays. In February, we hosted our International Games event, which was a huge success! We also be-gan planning for our upcoming fundraiser, the International Bake Sale. Students will be cre-ating baked goods from cultures across the globe that will be available for sale on Wednesday, April 10 and Thursday, April 11 after school. Please don't miss this awe-some opportunity to experience cultural cui-sine and to support the International Club! All proceeds will be used toward our goal of hir-ing an instructor of international dances for a May/June event that will be open to all BMS students. Whether you are a current member or a 7th or 8th grade student that is interested in joining us to plan this event, stay tuned to the announcements for information about our upcoming meeting and planning dates. We look forward to seeing everyone at the bake sale!

Future zero hour international club meetings: Wednesday, 3/20 Friday, 4/5 Baking preparation hour after school for members: Tuesday, 4/9 3:05-4:30 (stay as long as you can:)

6th Grade Pi Day at Beach

AMERICA & ME

Three students from Beach Middle School were named local winners in the 50th annual America & Me

Essay Contest sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance. Sarah Capper was first, Julia Kause was second and Trevor Ford was third. All three received award

certificates for their achievements. As the school’s first place winner, Sarah’s name will also be engraved on a plaque for permanent display in the school.

Beach Middle School’s participation in the contest was sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance agent, Rick Eder.

Sarah’s first-place essay advances to the state level competition where top 10 essays in Michigan will be selected. The top 10 winners will be announced in April and each will receive a plaque, a medallion and a cash award of $2,000. In addition, the top 10 essayists will be honored at a banquet in Lansing, meet with Michigan’s top governmental leaders, and be the featured guests at a Lansing Lugnuts minor league baseball game dedicated in their honor.

Also part of the 50th anniversary celebration year, each top 10 statewide school will be presented with a $1,000 check and another $500 if that school has been sponsored by a Farm Bureau Insurance agent.

A team of finalist judges, which includes a top Michigan government official and the sponsoring teachers of last year’s top two statewide winners, will determine the ranking of the top 10 statewide winners this year. Several thousand eighth graders from more than 400 Michigan schools participated in the 2018-1019 America & Me Essay contest, which was conducted with the help of Farm Bureau agents across the state. The topic of the 2018-19 contest was “My Personal Michigan Hero.”

Started in 1968 and open to all Michigan 8th-grade students, the contest encourages Michigan young-sters to explore the greatness of America and its people. As sponsor of the contest Farm Bureau Insurance has earned 11 national awards from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge.

Counselor’s

Corner

As we enter the final quarter of the school year, please continue to monitor the progress of your child. The closer we get to the end of the school year, the more likely a student will begin to slack in his or her effort.

Also, students have registered for classes. Not every single request will be met, but we will do our best to accommodate every stu-dent within our very tight elective schedule.

8TH GRADE CAREER DAY AT BMS

Eighth grade is a pivotal year for students and that is one of the reasons that Beach Middle

School offers a career day for its eighth-graders. This year’s career day took place at the school on Friday, March 1. There were 16 presenters representing a variety of fields, who spoke to students in rooms

throughout the school. Students each chose to see five presenters based on their interests. “Career day connects curriculum with course choices and helps students understand why what

we’re teaching them is important,” said Mr. Angel. Dana Bowers, a clinical psychologist, shared stories about his own experiences when he decided

to major in psychology. He said that the social and emotional branches of psychology appealed to him at first, and later he became fond of its academic branch.

Also on hand was Colin Seaberg, speaking about golf course management. He let students know that managing employees as well as a budget are key in his field. Many students were surprised to learn that managing a golf course can require more than an annual budget of a million dollars.

Adam Tillman, a senior sales executive at Kohler, initially wanted to work in public relations for a sports team, and those interests evolved into marketing and sales. “Take the passions and interests that drive you and grab them up,” Mr. Tillman advised students.

Although he initially planned to be a medical doctor, presenter Phil Zocharski told students that he didn’t think he had the people skills for the profession. Instead, he is a chemist working in pharma-ceutical engineering, and let students get some hands-on experience at creating capsules.

Also presenting was Dr. Chiquita Berg, is a physician, an obstetrician and gynecologist. When she asked students what they thought an ob-gyn does, the response was helping women give birth to babies. Dr. Berg said, “I attend birthday parties a few times a week and have delivered close to 5,000 babies, but we’re surgeons as well.”

CHS Marching Band Camp August 5-9, 2019

The Chelsea High School Bands are excited to welcome the Class of 2023 our current 8th Grade Band Members and their families! Plans are already underway for the 2019-2020 Chelsea High School Bands. Marching Band Camp is scheduled to take place the week of August 5-9, 2019. We will meet all new members on Satur-day August 3 for an orientation day, begin camp with the full Band on Aug. 5, and end the week with our annual car wash fundraiser scheduled to take place on Saturday August 10, 2019. There shouldn’t be any school conflicts with these dates, as all other fall sport seasons are scheduled to start after band camp. If anyone has questions or concerns regard-ing band camp please contact Mr. Catherman at [email protected], or by phone at 433-2200 ext. 1404. The color guard and drum line will begin preparations later this spring, with clinics/rehearsals taking place in May and early-June. Summer re-hearsals for both the percussion/drum line and color guard are tentatively scheduled for July 29 – Aug. 2, 2019. All high school band members will receive detailed information as each event nears this spring, and will receive a mailing this summer with detailed information including a schedule for band camp. The 2019 Bulldog Marching Band will plan our premier performances in the Chelsea Fair Parade and our first home football game in August. Addi-tional performance dates will be issued as soon as the calendar is finalized this next spring. Please visit the Chelsea H.S. Bands web-page by going to www.chelsea.k12.mi.us, then se-lecting “Chelsea High School”, “Music”, and then Mr. Catherman’s name. This page will be updated periodically this winter and spring with rehearsal and performance dates. You can also follow the Chelsea Bands on Twitter @ChelseaHSbands.

BMS CHOIR

In addition to beginning to learn our “lighter-fare” Spring repertoire, Beach choir students have been focusing on learn-ing more about time signatures, note val-ues, and vocal physiology. To see pictures of the vocal cords and folds, the voice box, the lungs and diaphragm and begin to get an idea of how they work together to pro-duce our singing voices, is not only en-lightening but cool!

The 7th & 8th graders went to Festi-val on March 1st and had an awesome learning experience and fun day spent with friends. While the bus ride was a highlight of the day for many, the choir’s music soared on stage and in the sight singing room. They saved their best performance ever for the Festival performance. One of the three performance judges even gave them a perfect score! Students worked very hard to prepare for the day and it was en-tirely gratifying to experience the satisfac-tion and joy as a result from all that effort.

Last, we would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our 5th grade choir students and families. We have been wait-ing all year for May 23rd to arrive and are so excited to have the 5th graders join us!

Spring Concert: Thursday, May 23, CHS Auditorium at 7 p.m.

Students report to auditorium, in uniform at 6:10 p.m. Families, please kind-ly wait in the Commons (seating available) while students have pre-concert rehearsal in auditorium. Auditorium doors will open at 6:50 p.m. Thank you!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR

6TH GRADE PARENTS

Please be aware that your child’s immunizations need to be updated and turned into the Beach Office before they can enter into 7th grade this 2019-20 school year. The immunization requirements for our in-coming 2018 7th grade students are 4 doses of DTP, 3 doses of Polio, 2 doses MMR, 1 dose Meningococcal, and 2 doses Varicella.

IMPORTANT CHANGES TO THE IMMUNIZATION WAIVER PROCESS:

The new Washtenaw County Public Health (WCPH) requirements state that parents seeking a nonmedical waiver must go to the lo-cal health department for science based education regarding vac-cines. WCPH will issue all waivers, which will be stamped, signed and embossed by a WCPH employee after the education has taken place. The parent will return the waiver to the school and the school personnel will process the waiver as they have in the past. A medical waiver must be filled out and signed by the child’s physician then brought to the school.

Again, please note that your incoming 2019 7th

grade child may not begin the school year at Beach Middle School without being fully updated on their immunizations.

If you have any questions, please call Patti in our Beach Office at 734-433-2202 between 7:30-11:00 AM or the Washtenaw County Public Health Department at 734-544-6700. Thank you.
