While I scooped the pile of wet sand we needed for the sand castle, John dug a channel for the lake to wash in. Bird was transfi xed, being too small to do anything but watch us. We were the three musketeers, digging for treasure.

Little did I know, it was this place in time– the sand, the lake, and the three brothers together– that was the most valued treasure of all.

A Palm SpringsA palm tree grew in our office this spring First an

apology to native Northern Michigan trees—speaking for my colleagues

at Traverse Magazine/Northern Home & Cottage, we love and value you

all, from your roots to your crowns. But as the long, cold spring wore

on, I, for one, kept thinking about the metal palm trees that the own-

ers of After Eects Salon in Manistee sell in front of their shop on US31.

And that inspired our Cheeky Tiki theme for Northern Style this month.

So, after work one day in early April, our editorial assistant, Evan Perry,

drove down and borrowed one of those trees so we could photograph it.

He got back to the oce in the evening and set it up smack in the mid-

dle of the oce. Not a one of us didn’t grin when we walked in the next

day and saw it. Which told me, we were all overdue for some fun in the

sun. I think you’ll smile when you see how Cheeky Tiki Northern Style

turned out. Now that it is summer, blend yourself a piña colada and

head for the beach with this magazine—you’ll want to be near water

when you see the three fabulous homes we’ve proled in this issue.

As for that palm tree—we’re considering keeping it and painting

the coconuts cherry red.

Several years after it was constructed, the

next owner cobbled two more bedrooms onto

the cottage. And at some point, another stone

replace was added to a room that over the

years became the cottage’s dining room.

By the 1940s, the cottage had become the

beloved summer headquarters for the White

family, and eventually White-Schilling families,

who made their own additions to the structure.

Under their tenure, the home was a touchstone

for generations of siblings and cousins who

grew up reveling in the freedom of rustic, water-

lled summers, recalls Carolyn Schilling Gery,

whose parents were the nal owners.

Carolyn’s parents, George and Barbara

Schilling, sold the cottage in 2004. As good for-

tune would have it, the buyers were precisely the

right family: instead of razing the old structure,

as is so often the case with old lake cottages, the

of Glen Eden Resort, a grand

summer enclave that once

graced Glen Lake, the cottage began its life

as a humble structure. That said, it was solidly

built, and it boasted a marvelously massive

fieldstone fireplace embellished with smaller

beach stones gathered, no doubt, from the

shores of nearby Sleeping Bear Bay. Like its

sister structures at Glen Eden and other proper-

ties around Glen Lake, the cottage was rented

by summer vacationers looking to treat their

families to a true Northwoods experience.

The cottage interior is a purposefully relaxed, casual mix of pattern, textures and colors. “Every corner, every nook and cranny is optimized for relaxed family

time,” says Valerie Schmieder of Via Design. “Even the attic space was converted to optimize plenty of sleeping options for the expanding family,” she adds.

new owners saved it. And although they have

gone on to make their own careful tweaks and

adjustments to accommodate their modern

family, they have taken care to preserve the

original scale, intimacy and materials of the

original structure.

Before launching the renovation, the

homeowners brought in an architect-interiors

team from Via Design in Grand Rapids for

advice and a reality check. Architect Brian

Barkwell, who was on the team, recalls being

smitten the moment he set eyes on the stone

replaces. Via was onboard, and so began

what has become a decade-long process of

stabilization, maintenance and renovation

that has also included Chris Mason of Mason

Construction and Ed Johnson of Northern

Property Management.

“It became a game of what to keep and

what to take away,” Brian says of the renova-

tion process, which he sums up as achieving

that “Glen Lake look.” Elements that remained

include the replaces, original wood oors,

board and batten living room walls and

wooden ceiling beams.

e exterior changed from a pale brown to a rich chocolate shade, trimmed in white and

topped with a green-shingled roof. A new screened-in porch facing the lake added a wonderful

place for the family to while away Glen Lake days and evenings. Builders raised the attic roof to

make room for more bedrooms—small and charmingly simple spaces under the rafters—and

they retrotted an outbuilding into a bunkhouse for their teenaged children and their friends.

Removing the wall between the old kitchen and the dining room made way for a kitchen

spacious enough for family and friends to mingle, cook and eat together—all in front of the

stone replace that was once sequestered in the dining room. Mason and his carpenters

refurbished the original beadboard cabinetry—and then replicated it in a new bank of cabi-

residential designer Fred Ball does a pretty fair job of camouflaging his widely respected design brilliance with a casual Hoosier drawl.

His client, Susan Covatta, a Cincinnati girl, says, with Midwestern modesty, that she’s never been good at anything much, but maybe she does “have an eye.”

Don’t let their humility fool you. Together, this designer-client

team conceptualized the inspired summer cottage that Susan owns

with her husband, Tony. Perched on a Lake Michigan blu north

of Harbor Springs, the Covatta cottage is original, simple, fresh and

disarmingly sophisticated. Above all, it is what it was meant to be: a

haven for capturing lake light, breezes, vistas and the relaxation that

comes with that ambiance.

e story of the house’s design dates back to a dark split-level that

had graced the exquisite blu-top property since the late 1950s—and

that had, according to Tony, “seen better days” by the time the couple

started thinking renovation. ey’d owned the place for 25 years, but

had summered in it for about 35 years, so they were understandably

attached to the dowdy cottage—lled with beachside memories as it

her furnishing style as eclectic: “A mixture of modern Scandinavian,

Mexican and antiques.” She credits Shannon Riley of Voltage in

Cincinnati, Ohio, with helping her to acquire many of her furnishings.

The home is wrapped in cedar shingles, a nod to Nantucket, a place that also fi gures into

was. So they began the arduous process of talking with builders

and designers about the possibility of renovating it. Everybody

they talked to said it would take a boggling amount of work and

money to transform the house.

During his inspection on a rainy, dreary day, Fred didn’t tell

them anything di erent. In fact, he was even more pointed: After

coming up from the lower level with its cramped two bedrooms

and laundry room, he declared, “ at’s the most depressing space

I’ve ever been in.”

“I could tell we’d found the right architect,” Susan says with

a laugh. While it was obvious to the couple that Fred was going

to be upfront with them, they also intuited that Fred understood

what they liked and what they didn’t like about the oor plan.

In the end, with Fred’s blessing, the couple tore down the old

structure and built new.

If you have the average three bedroom home, last winter you probably paid about $2400 to heat it. This year... you can

already guess what energy costs will end up being.

How would you like to cut that in half, to say $1200? Or better yet, by two-thirds, to $800? We thought so.

Call GeoFurnace today to learn how you can drastically reduce your heating and cooling costs. With a geothermal heating and cooling

system from WaterFurnace, it’s not as difficult as you would think.

In the design of the new structure, Fred preserved the shotgun simplicity of the old cottage,

with several major exceptions: He moved the footprint closer to the edge of the blu and then

ipped it left to right to maximize the view of the dunes.

Fred also delivered a novel take on the split-level idea, placing the split at one end of the cot-

tage, instead of at the foyer as is more traditional. e result is an amazing six bedrooms tucked

quietly away from the serene ground-oor public area that houses the kitchen, dining and living

area and sunny, book-lined library.

With the home’s shell agreed upon, Fred and Susan focused their dialogue on the interior. Much

of their conversation revolved around the Swedish beach houses Susan had seen while traveling

in Scandinavia with Tony. Susan was enamored with the way the cottages’ fresh, whitewashed

surfaces played up the seashore light while providing the perfect backdrop for the clean lines of

mid-century modern Scandinavian furniture.

From its tawny-colored reclaimed, pickled oak oor to pine beadboard on the walls and

ceilings, the interior speaks with an unmistakable Scandinavian inection of warm wood and

modern sensibilities. A cream-colored plaster replace parlays the shades-of-white theme, and

a bank of French doors topped with transom windows running along

the lakeside bathes the interior in that precious sea light. e transoms

are mirrored on the opposite wall, a touch as elegant as it is functional:

Cross ventilation through the sets of awning-style windows obviates the

need for air conditioning.

Susan’s (mostly) mid-century modern furnishings round out the strik-

ing interior that is also marked by careful craftsmanship, a quality that the

Covattas attribute to Scott Kennard’s team from Wentworth Builders.

“Our house in Cincinnati was built by great workmen, but as good as they

were, they were no match for Scott’s men,” Tony says, going on to describe

coming upon one of the carpenters building the shelves in the library. “He

made sure every board was absolutely perfect … smoothed them, caressed

them, sighted along them. ey built the entire house like that.”

e home is wrapped in cedar shingles, a nod to Nantucket, a place

that also gures into Susan’s lifetime of summer memories. e cottage’s

landscaping consists mostly of a sea of dune grass plantings—swaying

in the lake breezes, the bright green blades seeming to serenade the

essential natural beauty of the Covatta’s summer cottage.

Susan’s favorite décor haunts.

Most weekends, you can nd one such couple enjoying their modern

blu-side getaway near Cross Village. Jessica Woll, a Detroit-area family

law attorney, and her husband, Don Stewart, an executive at Chrysler,

combined good timing with keen vision when they purchased the then-

unnished house in 2008. e 6,000-square-foot structure had sat in a

skeletal state for about two years, due to the recession. Jessica and Don

were drawn to the home’s geometric shape and modern sensibility as well

as its woodsy site on Sturgeon Bay, near where they had vacationed for

many years. When they nished the house, they maintained its original

personality, enhancing it for their own needs.

Ask any Northern Michigan real estate pro, and they’ll tell

you that the market is recovering. Homes and cottages

are selling faster, for higher prices. Just a few years ago,

though, listings were plentiful and bargains easy to nd, even for the kind

of prime lakefront properties people dream about. Serious buyers were

scarce but savvy, and now, as demand and values climb, they are happy

to count themselves among the few who “got in” at the perfect time.

Jessica and Don love modern design, and they wanted a unique

Up North home in a private, natural setting. Respecting the land was

important to them, and the home’s gentle footprint is certied by LEED

(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). e certication

was achieved through careful siting, geothermal heating and cooling,

and selection of eco-friendly materials. e landscaping on the 3½-acre

site is very minimal, and the dark exterior color scheme of the home

helps it blend into the mature trees.

“We’re more cognizant of the environment [Up North] because the

natural beauty is right there in front of us,” Jessica says.

Inside the house, Lake Michigan is visible from nearly every room.

e cantilevered master bedroom with oor-to-ceiling glass seems to

oat over the waves. Jessica sometimes wakes up to see eagles search-

ing the water for breakfast.

“ere’s an inside-out aspect to every space,” says Jessica. is

design feature is especially welcome when large groups gather here. e

We’re more cognizant of the environment [Up North] because the natural beauty is right there in front of us.

ve-bedroom, ve-and-one-half–bathroom house is often full of family

and friends enjoying all that Cross Village and Harbor Springs have

to oer, all year long. at includes skiing at Boyne Highlands, biking

through the beloved tunnel of trees on M-119 and, of course, running

down the zigzagging staircase with a sun-dried towel to hit the beach.

Jessica also loves art and indulges that interest with her 8-year-old

daughter, India, at ree Pines Studio in Cross Village. e gallery and

studio holds workshops for all ages and sells local ne art and crafts. It’s

where she purchased an unusual tribute to India’s equestrian hobby: a

life-sized, recycled-metal sculpture of two horses by Boyne City artist

Doug Melvin. e piece greets visitors in the front yard. Personal touches

like this stand out against the minimal look of the home.

From top: The homeowners respected the natural state of the site by limiting

lawn space. The house itself is dark, to blend better with the woods. A scrap-

metal sculpture of two horses by local artist Doug Melvin greets visitors. The

sculpture’s rusty components reflect the heavy metalwork on the house

e minimalism has a cottagey counter-

point, though, with glossy-white beadboard

hung horizontally throughout the house. In

the kitchen, the beadboard plays o Shaker-

style cabinetry, a custom-made modular table

and a kilim rug over ipe ooring. e result is

a distinctly original look that’s warm but still

clean and modern.

e family has been enjoying the retreat for

several years now. ey have thoughts of

expanding, maybe adding a pool for the shoul-

der seasons. Timing was all-important in the

beginning, but now when the family arrives Up

North, all the pressure is o. It’s the perfect

place to take in the views and the fresh air

blowing across Sturgeon Bay.
