True Northern StyleI’m lovin’ this month’s Northern Style—everything from the execution

to the fi nal page layout has been a blast. ˜ e fun started in early October when I

went scouting for product ideas. Northern Michigan’s color season was just blooming, but given

that I was preparing for the December issue, I had visions of sugar-plums dancing in my head—so

I set out for the Manistee area, land of the enchanting Victorian Sleighbell Parade & Old Christmas

Weekend. ˜ e festival was, of course, still two months away (December 5–8 this year), but I hoped

there’d be an opportunity to sni° the holidays in the air.

I brought a friend for what turned out to be a gloriously beautiful day ÿ lled with charming

shops and stunning landscape. After browsing Serendipity in Bear Lake, we headed to down-

town Manistee where the Vogue ˜ eatre was still wearing its sca° olding—a sign of the renovation

that promises to inject the downtown with the same glow that the State ˜ eatre gave downtown

Traverse City—but no matter. ˜ e shops were bustling. And for good reason: they are on style-

ÿ re down there, from ˜ e Ideal Kitchen to Alex Doucett’s, from Suvi to Swankyz to Surroundings,

there was home decor and me-decor stu° to rival any downtown shopping experience.

With sweet ideas swirling in my brain, we headed back north on M-22 for Onekama and the

fabulous home boutique Macbeth. Along the route we were reminded that this southern tour of

the famous scenic highway is not to be overshadowed by its perhaps better-known northern half.

Apple trees heavy with maroon fruit, farm markets spilling out pumpkins and pears, that jaw-

dropping scenic turnout above Lake Michigan north of Arcadia … Really, I can’t wait to see it all

decked out for the holidays!

If that isn’t enough to steer you to Manistee for destination shopping, check out our Northern

Style spread on page 8. And, of course, you won’t want to miss an armchair tour of the three fabu-

lous homes we’ve featured in this issue.

Very Happy Holidays from Northern Home & Cottage to your homes and cottages!

Anatomy of a Rain Screen

GAP-ING

Protecting Northern Michigan homes from the elements typically involves tightly sealing all the gaps, right? Architect Jeff Jordan turned that notion upside-down by placing gaps between this Higgins Lake house’s cladding and its building envelope. It’s called a rain screen. Walls are wrapped with a weather-resistant barrier. Then cladding (in this case, spaced cedar slats) is installed with a 1½-inch gap of air space between it and the weather barrier. Rain or snow may enter the gap behind the clad-ding, but moisture either evaporates or drains away. That means there’s reduced potential for mold formation. It also creates an insulating layer of air that reduces thermal transfer through walls, which means less energy is required for heating and cooling. The technique has been popular in the Pacific Northwest, but builders and architects are now seeing its benefits for commercial and residential proj-ects throughout the country.—D.K.

FROM OPPOSITE: The great room’s oversized ceiling fans direct cool air from low windows up

through the house and out the clerestory windows on the north side. There is no need for air

conditioning. ABOVE: Terraced landscaping around the back deck helps meet code require-

ments without the need for railings that would block the view of Higgins Lake.

H iggins Lake boaters setting a landmark

for a mid-water rendezvous have

taken to saying, “We’ll meet you at

the California House.” They’re talking about Dave

and Karen Jordan’s two-year-old getaway that

aligns with a popular sandbar near the center of

the 9,600-acre Roscommon County lake. With

its modernist style the house does have a Palm

Springs–circa-1960 look, but the couple’s architect

son, Jeff Jordan, of Jeff Jordan Architects in New

Jersey, was wholly inspired by the woodsy lot on

one of Michigan’s most beloved lakes.

At only 75 feet, the site's width was a chal -

lenge. Yet, Jeff wanted to create plenty of space

for the extended family (sometimes as many as

25 people) without overwhelming neighboring

houses or dominating the lakefront. Despite his

parents’ leanings toward a traditional cottage, Jeff

began sketching and building models of a sleek,

raised single-story structure broken into four

masses with long sight lines down the middle

and offset volumes that maximize natural light.

A daylight basement doubles the living

quarters, creating a 5,000-square-foot house

that appears much smaller and maintains

generous setbacks from neighbors. The layout

accommodates a crowd, but Jeff’s use of zones

within the large structure means it’s just as

comfortable when Dave and Karen dr ive up

from Okemos for a quick break from their busy

software business. The main level sits a few feet

above grade, housing a great room with open

kitchen, master suite, guest suite, study/home

theater, and laundry. Downstairs is devoted to

guests with four bedrooms, two baths, and an

extra-large flex space with kitchenette. Windows

bring in light and views from the lake and small

“courtyard” areas.

To better connect the raised house with the

site’s gentle slope toward the lake, Jeff designed

decks, planting beds and wide stairs that

descend gradually to a lawn and sandy beach.

The stepped design of the decking eliminates the

need for railings, so the miles-long vista projects

uninterrupted through a wall of glass, all the way

to the back entrance from the two-car garage.

Karen says the moment she walks in, the lake

view is calming: “This is peace.”

Because the focal point of nearly every room

is Higgins Lake and its central points and pen-

insulas, Jeff says, “The house should be quiet,

visually.” To achieve the natural, subdued inte-

rior, he chose materials like cedar, oak, maple,

granite, and exposed strand lumber. Shapes are

simple, and spaces are minimally furnished. The cedar rain screen (see sidebar) that encloses the house

stretches indoors onto the great-room walls, blurring lines between indoors and out.

Summer lake breezes are welcomed indoors through the clerestory ventilation system in the

main living space, enhanced by two oversized ceiling fans. Other features that contribute to the

home’s high energy efficiency include optimization of natural light and heat through window place-

ment and the use of deep eaves, a remotely operable heating system, on-demand water heaters,

and closed-cell foam insulation. General contractor Bob Zuzula of Bay City says that during the

enclosed phase of construction, heating the house cost significantly less than heating a typical

house during construction.

Invisible efficiencies and thoughtful architecture are what give this house such a carefree

spirit. No matter the weather or the number of guests, Dave and Karen know that here on the

water, relaxation is a given.

LandscapeA low-slung home that blends into its site makes a quiet statement about craftsmanship and design. TEXT BY HEATHER JOHNSON DUROCHER • PHOTOS BY TODD ZAWISTOWSKI

INTO THE

D ebbie Hindle describes the view atop her nearly 80 acres near Cross

Village as spectacular and breathtaking, and indeed it is with the

landscape beyond the property graced with the Waugoshance

archipelago, lighthouses in the Straits of Mackinac and, on the clearest of

days, the Upper Peninsula sand dunes along US-2.

And while she can see much of that view from inside her Frank Lloyd

Wright–inspired home nestled within woods and meadowlands of the bluff,

her home isn’t a part of anyone’s view. This, she explains, was by deliberate

design. “I wanted it to fit into the landscape and not stand out,” she says of

the home that started to take shape, if only in her mind, when she and her

partner Ken Ross met with Ann Arbor architect Mike Quinn in 2002.

“We had in mind something like Kentuck Knob, the Frank Lloyd Wright

property in western Pennsylvania not far from [the r enowned architect’s

famous] Fallingwater and near where I grew up in Uniontown,” Hindle says.

“Mike brought our ideas alive in ways we could not have imagined.”

Kentuck Knob, Quinn points out, fell into Wright’s Usonian period—a term

the architect coined for modest homes built from native materials designed

with a strong connection between the interior and exterior.

Page 21: Northern Home & Cottage - December/January 2013/14

The low, neutral-toned

facade of the Hindle/

Ross home blends into

the landscape, while

the back opens to a

breathtaking view of

the Mackinac Straits.

sheep (collectively

known as the “the

use to help trim their

lovely meadows.

Page 22: Northern Home & Cottage - December/January 2013/14

20 MyNorth.com

Hindle and Ross, who also maintain an 1850s apartment residence in

Glasgow, Scotland, met with Quinn once a year from then on, breaking

ground on their American home in 2008. The home that Hindle, Ross,

Quinn and builder Randy Clara eventually constructed in this sublime

setting is set into a hillside so that the facade runs long and low with the

landscape. The exterior is defined by neutral-toned organic materials

including gray-stained cedar siding, set in reverse board and batten

to accentuate the structure’s horizontal lines. Rough stone detailing

around the doorway lends texture. The back of the home drops down

the hillside two stories and is situated to take in the stunning Great

Lakes view.

Like any Wright-esque plan, there is magic in the geometry—in this

case, the 120-degree angles that break up the exterior walls in interesting

and unexpected places. There are, in fact, no 90-degree angles in the wing-

shaped footprint, a feature that works to make the structure feel at home

with the land.

The thoughtfulness embodied in the exterior carries into the interior,

with its quarter-sawn white oak floors and trim, rough-stone fireplace and

continuation of the gemlike 120-degree angles throughout the interior. As

in Kentuck Knob, the kitchen is at the core of the home, set in this case at

the junction of the private and public wings. The kitchen’s clean, simple

lines and natural materials are made luxurious by a skylight that bathes

the workspace in light. “With the uniqueness of the house and the location,

it was a once-in-a-lifetime build,” says Clara.

While Clara was the home’s contractor and main builder, Hindle

and Ross have done a lot of the work themselves. “Working as part

of the building team helped me to appreciate the craftsmanship that

went into building the house,” says Ross. Among Ross’s touches are

Ross and Hindle’s dedication to all that surrounds their home is equal to the thought that went into the home itself. A year aft er purchasing the property—more than 30 years before they broke ground on their home—Hindle planted a thousand white and red pine and blue spruce trees along the property boundaries, trees she’d bought from the state of Michigan.

As those grew, sumac and pop-lar trees naturally took over what had once been meadows. So some years back, Hindle borrowed, and later bought, a tractor and brush hog to re-create the meadows and turn them into gorgeous outdoor spaces. Today wildfl owers bloom in the meadows each spring, nearly two miles of walking trails trace the land, and sitting areas punctuate the groves of trees. Landscape archi-tect Sheridan Jones and landscape gardener Richard Hoffman have helped Hindle create the outdoor spaces, which also include her own Fallingwater–inspired waterfall beside an expansive dry-stone patio over-looking a meadow.

Additionally, Hindle has worked to eradicate the invasive knapweed; for the past two years she’s bor-rowed several sheep from a neigh-boring farm to graze on it. “Nothing prepared me for how much work a meadow could be,” Hindle says of all of her outdoor travail. “But this is so much fun for me.”

And while she can see much of that view from inside of her Frank Lloyd

Wright–inspired home nestled within woods and meadowlands of the bluff,

her home isn’t a part of anyone’s view. This, she explains, was by deliberate

design. “I wanted it to fit into the landscape and not stand out,” she says of

the home that started to take shape, if only in her mind, when she and her

partner Ken Ross met with Ann Arbor architect Mike Quinn in 2002.

“We had in mind something like Kentuck Knob, the Frank Lloyd Wright

property in western Pennsylvania not far from [the r enowned architect’s

famous] Fallingwater and near to where I grew up in Uniontown,” Hindle says.

“Mike brought our ideas alive in ways we could not have imagined.”

Kentuck Knob, Quinn points out, fell into Wright’s Usonian period—a term

the renowned architect coined for modest homes built from native materials

designed with a strong connection between the interior and exterior.

Picture a Christmas dinner, perhaps in the

1960s or ’70s. The gathering is in a lovely,

traditional home, in a formal dining room

with a bay window overlooking Grand Traverse

Bay, where lapping waves swallow falling snow.

Around the long table, laden with a Christmas

feast and all the trimmings, sits a large, gregarious

family: grandparents, parents, three sons and a

daughter—who would never forget the warmth of

growing up in that house, and especially Christmas

dinners in that dining room.

Flash forward nearly a half-century. The daugh-

ter and her husband own the house now. Though

they both cherish memories of the 1940s colonial

home and the people who had lived there, it is time

to rebuild in a style more fitting with the couple’s

relaxed lifestyle. Raze the old home they did, but

the couple didn’t waste anything, donating appli-

ances, bathroom fixtures, hardwood floors and

windows to needy families via Freedom Builders, a

local nonprofit organization. Next, Odom Reusable

came to salvage anything that was left, and finally

the Grand Traverse Fire Department used the

structure for training.

For their new home, the couple commis -

sioned architect Bob Cornwell to design a blue-

print that would honor the old house, yet create

a style that would be completely their own. It

was a perfect collaboration, given that Cornwell

grew up down the beach from the site and had

known his client all her life.

Using a computer program that rendered ideas

in 3D so that the homeowners could better envision

them, Cornwell designed a long, open floor plan

that is oriented around gorgeous views of Grand

Traverse Bay. Tailored for casual entertaining, the

layout flows from the kitchen (with its adjacent

octagonal breakfast nook), through the dining

room to the living area. The space is flooded with

natural light and the green-blue reflection of water,

which laps beyond the glass doors and the win -

dows that stretch nearly floor to ceiling.

Like the house that preceded it, this new home

is made for living as well as entertaining. While the

home has a formal foyer that opens straight ahead

into the beautiful great room, the foyer also con -

nects to a utilitarian hallway that parallels the great

room, and ends at a mudroom/family entrance off

the garage, which in turn opens to the kitchen. In

Page 31: Northern Home & Cottage - December/January 2013/14

Kim Hooker of Cedar Creek Interiors in Traverse City assisted the homeowner in selecting most of the home’s furnishings, including the wrought iron spherical chandelier

in the breakfast nook. Beadboard ceilings, both painted and unpainted, lend a cottage feel. Navajo white-painted woodwork creates a pleasing backdrop for the home-

owners’ art collection. Guido Goldkuhle of Kühl Doors in Traverse City designed and fabricated the leaded glass doors on the buffet cabinet. It was the homeowner’s idea

to mount the mirror above the buffet—a trick (she learned from her mother) to amplify the lake view.

effect, the hallway siphons the business-of-living traffic from the beautiful open areas on the home’s

lakeside, keeping them clean, serene and clutter free.

Interior designer Kim Abbott assisted with a look that strikes a balance between beach house and

town home. The Ann Sacks kitchen backsplash flashes gemlike elegance in watery blues and greens.

A beadboard ceiling in the kitchen hints at cottage, while twin decorative columns flanking the open

kitchen lend classic sophistication. Likewise, painted woodwork that speaks vintage cottage is a foil

for a handsome mahogany-like friejo wood floor. The design work was a labor of love for Abbott,

who’d done interior decorating for the homeowner’s mother in the original home. Both mother and

daughter, Abbott says, “have exquisite taste.”

As a tribute to the woman who taught her style, the homeowner worked a number of her

mother’s pieces into her new home, i ncluding a chair co vered in one o f the Asian pat terns her

mother adored. But the homeowner’s favorite nod to her mother was installing a mirror behind the

bar in the dining room—just the way her mother had done. Given that the new dining room opens

to the same Grand Traverse Bay view, that mirror reflects lifetimes of memories.
