It was the same challenge every summer. Dad would take the boat to “our spot”.. our favorite secluded beach on the sand dunes.
After he anchored the boat we donned our cool new goggles and got ready for the race. Mom would yell “GO!”, and we would all plunge into the big lake and race Dad to the top of the dunes. He would always win, of course.
Until this year– finally. The celebration that followed featured ice cream, smores, and lots of humble pie for Dad.

Site SensitiveFor obvious reasons, our annual waterfront issue is a delight to
work on. Just looking at the photos of lakeside terraces, screened in porches, and sunlight-filled rooms with watery views gives me a shot of vicarious summe that leaves me beaming. While I have written accolades over the years about the homes that appear in our June issue, I want to especially call out this year’s selection for their sensitivity to their sites. Without exception, each of the homeowners we worked with on this issue have told us that they carefully considered how to get the most form and function out of their homes with the least amount of space. The reasons are what you might assume. These homeowners don’t want to waste precious summer days keeping up a too large home any more than they want their homes to appear as ostentatious statements on the shoreline.
Each home in this issue represents a different aesthetic, but they are al pleasingly efficient designs executed with an eye to the local historic vernacular a set carefully in regard to natural vegetation and a low-profile view of them from th water. To that, I say, Thank you!
And of course, the all-important: each home makes me want to pour (or be poured!) a glass of chardonnay and settle into the waterfront view.
On another happy note, make sure to check our new Northern Style layout on page 8. It’s a product of the vision and energy of our new art director Heather Gray—a woman who lives and loves good design and fine décor. Heather’ enthusiasm for this publication is splashed all over these pages.
Here’s to hoping you get as many ideas and as much enjoyment out of this issue as we did putting it together. And here is to a fabulous Northern Michigan summer wherever you are spending it!

Northern Home & Cottage JUNE|JULY 15 NHC17
On a blue sky, blue water day near the end of last summer,
three boys played together on the Lake Michigan beach in
front of a lovely summer home. The scene from inside the
home, through windows framed by white mullions, felt very
much like a painting—William Merritt Chase’s 19th-century
seaside works that capture the sublime coastal light, perhaps.
Except of course, instead of starched period garb, these boys
wore the bright neons of contemporary kids.
No doubt, the family who lives here is modern to the core,
burdened with all of the crazy busyness that accompanies mod-
ern life—careers, school, extra-curricular activities. But when
the family arrives at this home on this slice of Sleeping Bear Bay,
the bustle calms, thanks to the serene shore-side setting and a
home perfectly suited to that setting.
By the time the homeowners built their summer home, they
knew the area well. They’dfirst visited the Sleeping Bear area on
a tour of the Lake Michigan coast early in their marriage. “We
knew right away, this was where we wanted to summer,” the
homeowner says. When the opportunity arose, they bought a
small house in the woods on the edge of Glen Arbor. They were
so excited about moving in, the homeowner remembers, that
they showed up at their new house, car and U-Haul loaded to
the hilt, before the former owners had completely vacated.

Northern Home & Cottage JUNE|JULY 15 NHC19
The family had many, many happy summers in that house. And then one day they noticed a for sale
sign on an older beach house down the road. It was their chance to live not just near the beach, but to
live on it. They purchased the property and made plans to take down the old home and rebuild.
When she first began picturing what their new summer home would look like, the homeowner says
she kept imagining driftwood—the soft silvery tones, the way it looks like it has been set on the beach
forever. She pored through home magazines looking for photos of homes with that feeling and even-
tually decided the old summer homes of Nantucket, with their historic architectural sensibilities and
earthy coastal palettes, best described what she was looking for.
Architect Suzannah Tobin gave shape to the homeowners’ ideas, designing a home nestled in a grove
of pine trees, a bit back from the beach. “Zoning would have allowed them to build closer to the water,
but the unwritten rule [of designing beach houses] is that you don’t go past the tree line. It ruins the
whole shoreline,” she says.
The two-gabled home measures 2,100 square feet, is long and narrow, and is situated to make the
most of the lake breezes. Banks of four-paned divided light casement windows open to those breezes
while giving a nod to a crisp, cottage style. Pulling on her own childhood growing up on Lake Michigan’s
nearby West Grand Traverse Bay, where she recalls the heat of the sinking sun, Tobin added a deep,
covered wraparound porch. Clad in cedar shake, the home indeed evokes the feeling of a 19th-century
coastal home.
Tobin is particularly pleased with another nostalgic touch—keeping the garage separate from the
house. “One of the best parts of arriving Up North is getting out of the car and smelling trees and
instantly hearing the water. Even in the winter you can get out at night and look up at the stars,” she
says. “Everything looks less suburban when the garage is not stuck on to the house,” Tobin adds. “But
people usually don’t realize it until it is too late.”

The homeowner credits builders Randy and Nadine Weirich of Heart
Homes for turning the construction process into a labor of love. “They
were so easy to work with,” she says. “They really cared. I’ve never seen a
building site that was so clean in my entire life.”
It was the kind of creative, flawless collaboration that builds friend-
ships. “They are the most wonderful people,” Nadine says of the home-
owners.
Finished now, the home has become the family’s haven from a busy
world. They swim, fish, beachcomb … but often they just relax on the
covered porch and take in the crescent sweep of the shoreline and where
it ends at Sleeping Bear and Pyramid Points. Straight ahead, North and
South Manitou islands float on the horizon. Freighters pass by. Deer
amble down to the lake for a drink. It is as peaceful, beautiful and time-
less as, well, driftwood comes to mind.

cement block foundation. More than 900 bolts hold the house
together. A steel catwalk plays on the home’s contrasting
cottage and industrial vibe.

If you have the average three bedroom home, last winter you probably paid about $2400 to heat it. This year... you can
already guess what energy costs will end up being.
How would you like to cut that in half, to say $1200? Or better yet, by two-thirds, to $800? We thought so.
Call GeoFurnace today to learn how you can drastically reduce your heating and cooling costs. With a geothermal heating and cooling
system from WaterFurnace, it’s not as difficult as you would think.

The vacation staging area will be the cottage that the Siegels designed and built several years ago along the shores of the 640-acre lake in Leelanau County, not far from Lake Michigan. And that is a treat in itself. Life at the cottage is simple, serene and relaxing—qualities that belie the precise thought, design and green construction that went into it.
The Siegels, who live most of the year in Ada, near Grand Rapids, purchased the wooded three-acre lot in 2000. Over the next seven years they trekked north whenever possible, sometimes camping on their property, while they decided what sort of home they should build. Back then the property was marked only by birch trees, a two-track that the couple believes was once a logging trail, and a clear, swift-flowin creek where watercress grows.
Scott, whose background is in industrial design (Jane teaches at Valparaiso University Law School), was particularly vested in the visioning. “Scott did a tremendous amount of work him-self … there was a lot of thought and love that went into this,” Jane says. The couple knew they wanted a low-maintenance, green-built home with a modest footprint—one that would be in scale with the older cottages that ring Little Traverse Lake.
Working with architect and friend Mike Corby of Grand Rapids, the couple finally broke ground in 2007 on the home that fuses a Michigan-cottage aesthetic with hints of an industrial vibe: think cedar shake siding, post-and-beam structure, and knotty-pine walls with a metal roof, some exposed duct work and a minimalist clean-lined hearth. With sprayed insulation foam in the walls and 8” SIPs (structurally
insulated panels) in the ceiling, Scott estimates that they save 35 percent on the cost of heating and cooling over what the cost would be if the cottage were conventional construction.
Thefour-bedroom, three-bathroom home sleeps 12 to 14, yet it measures just under 2,000 square feet. “We did make it small, but it lives large,” Jane says. The plan revolves around two separate structures joined by a dogtrot—the southern term for a breezeway. Thedogtrot connects the guest quarters with the rest of the home while creating an expansive feeling and framing the view of that birch-lined shore.
No-fuss, relaxed cottage décor was important to the couple. While they bought some new furniture, they also found “true cottage-like” treasures at flea markets and garage sales and installed practical amenities, such as a drain-board sink in their kitchen.
Scott and Jane come north as often as they can, and when possible, their two grown sons join them from their respective homes in Chicago and Portland, Oregon. Even when friends join them, the cottage never feels crowded. And given the structure’s minimal interference with its wooded setting, the site is peaceful and relaxing. “Unfortunately people think you need to build big to accommodate your family,” Jane says. “But to build a summer place that fits the bill but is not huge … it feels good."
Heather Johnson Durocher writes about her beloved Michigan and all
things running in the Mitten State from Traverse City, where she lives with
her husband and three children. michiganrunner.com.
In lieu of columns to hold up the deck roof, the Siegels opted for the clean, honest statement made by steel posts bolted to concrete cookies.

IN 1937 A YOUNG WOMAN PURCHASED A SMALL, RUSTIC COTTAGE ON A WOODSY LOT ON LONG LAKE—DEEP IN THE NORTHWOODS BACK THEN. GIVEN THE ERA, IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN
CONSIDERED A BIT DARING. BUT A COLLEGE FRIEND WHOSE FAMILY COTTAGE WAS NEXT DOOR HAD URGED HER ON.

Her decision proved a fabulous investment in family life. Every summer since, the property has drawn family members to the classic good life Up North: days spent boating, waterskiing, swimming and hiking capped o ̃ by cocktails and campÿ res on the shore. By the 1950s, members of the woman’s extended family had purchased an adjacent property to create a small family compound.
Eventually, the original cottage, quaint and memory-ÿ lled as it was, fell short on capacity for the growing family and guests. ˛ e place had become the single gathering point for family now scattered across the country, and as such, clearly needed an expansion and update—or, as it turned out, a fresh start from an architect with respect for the rich traditions of the property.
The family discovered architect Robert Ben Begley after spotting one of his recent projects while cruising Long Lake. ˛ e new home stood out to them for its strong historic lines that blended well with the lake’s older architecture. ˛ ey contacted Begley,

Begley made the most of the pie-shaped lot by positioning the house and detached garage in such a way that all rooms except one bathroom have a lake view. A window-lined kitchen and a three-season porch on the lakeside ̃ank the main ̃oor living area, with
its full masonry ÿ replace. Upstairs, the bedrooms and bath-
rooms are small by design to contribute to the vintage mood and to create pri-vacy for many guests. A hallway, narrow by today’s standards, shows o ̨ excep-tional attention to detail in the mill-work design and craftsmanship. ˝ ese aspects contribute to the home’s feeling of age and solidity, Begley explains.
To pull o ̨ the old-fashioned design, general contractor Mike Ferraro and his crew at Ferraro Builders built and ÿ nished the cottage with care, down to the last detail. “I made sure that all sub-contractors understood and embraced the historical accuracy and timeless-ness of this project,” says Ferraro. “˝ at communication was very important to turning the design into reality.”
Well before attending to the details, however, Ferraro and his team adeptly managed the biggest construction chal-lenges: easing heavy machinery down the narrow dirt lane—better suited to early

autos than modern excavation equip-ment—while protecting the site’s mature trees. With most of its ancient hardwoods and hemlocks still standing tall, the prop-erty appears untouched—an element that adds to the setting’s timeless aura.
As it was in the old cottage, outdoor living is a natural extension of the new home with its extensive ipe decking and outdoor shower. ̃ e original bathhouse has been spruced up, too, with a viewing deck—the perfect perch for the family to gather for their cherished tradition of evening cocktails.
Today’s family matriarch, a niece of the original owner, spends all summer on Long Lake in her own little wing o° the main- ̨oor living space. Her mem-ories of 12-hour hikes circumnavigating Long Lake’s shore and lively family din-ners crammed into a tiny kitchen are as alive as the scenarios happening today with her grandchildren. When the cottage eventually hosts a ÿ fth gen-eration, the family will always have their place to gather, to tell the stories and sense the spirit of their great-great-great aunt who was wise enough to buy a tiny cottage on Long Lake in 1937.

G iven that it was only
a ranch-style home, the old house on the
Bear Lake shore didn’t have much going
for it—except some beloved local history.
˜ e doctor in this Manistee County small
town, also named Bear Lake, had lived in
the home since the 1950s. If the doctor’s
old black crank phone, tucked away in the
basement, could talk, imagine the life and
death dramas it could tell.
Shrouded in the village’s narrative, the
house was virtually part of the shoreline of
this lovely rural lake when an Indiana couple
purchased it several years ago. By then, the
couple had visited Bear Lake enough to be
acquainted with the home’s signiÿ cance.
˜ ey were also fond of the beautiful Bear
Lake and its relaxed, unpretentious lifestyle.

A lthough they
knew the house would need some drastic
renovation, the couple was determined to
proceed with care, salvaging as much of the
home as possible. To that end, they turned
to Grand Rapids builder Doug McKee of
Daeco Builders, a company with experi-
ence in renovating historic homes. After a
thorough inspection though, McKee deter-
mined that the home’s very solid founda-
tion was all that should be saved.
Rather than be disappointed, the couple
took that as their cue to build a home on
the old foundation that stayed within the
footprint of the doc’s house—their new
home wouldn’t eat up any additional shore-
line. Additionally, they would stick to a sin-
gle story to honor the former home’s unas-
suming profile. The one potential problem:
the family of five needed four bedrooms
and space for entertaining extended family
and friends. The old footprint could prove
too confining

E nter Jeff Visser of J. Visser Designs—a boutique
design firm that specializes in the very careful planning of water-
front homes. Designers at J. Visser begin the planning process by
asking questions as grand as, “How will the new structure interplay
with the shoreline?” And as mundane as, “How can visiting grand-
babies have a quiet place to sleep when the home is filled with fam-
ily and guests?” But priority one, Jeff explains, is tracking the path
of the sun across the site to determine how to orient the home to
capture as much natural light as possible.
In the case of the Bear Lake cottage, the upshot of the careful
design process is a home that finesses light and space at every
angle, while answering all of the lifestyle needs the couple asked
for. A generous covered terrace off the great room adds valuable
living space, for example, while a cupola that rises above the same
room bathes it in a bounty of light from above—light that bounces
off walls faced with white clapboard hung horizontally to amplify a
spacious feeling.
The cottage-style laundry room
is as charming as it is utilitarian.

hallway—ensuring quiet for early-to-bed or
late-to-rise sleepers.
The small, effic nt and beautifully
appointed kitchen conceals a pantry that is
roomy enough for storage, prep and hous-
ing kitchen appliances. The mud/laundry
room (always one of the most important
spaces in a lake home) threads between
the master wing and the dining area. This
über-efficien room opens out to the yard
and beach and also provides access to a
fully finished basement where outdoor toys
and furniture are stored.
This precisely designed living space is
enclosed in a lovely, gracefully detailed
shingle-style exterior. It’s the kind of time-
less cottage style that could have been built
yesterday—or a hundred years ago. The
home will age well. The doctor would be
pleased.
