Northbrook Notes August 2017 Northbrook Presbyterian Church Newsletter “Live the Love of Jesus Christ” Northbrook A Place to Gather and Grow in God This Fall, we have adopted as our theme “Northbrook: A Place to Gather and Grow in God.” This is an exciting time for us as the building renovations are set to begin, and we prepare to expand our mission through a new staff position dedicated to Outreach Ministries. Through the coming months, we will be looking to the future as we celebrate and remember our past. We’ll hear from people for whom Northbrook has made a difference—maybe YOU have a story that needs to be shared. The session will be hosting dinners to hear from each other about what this faith community means to you and what you hope to see happen here in the future. In the next few weeks, you’ll receive an invitation to join a dinner conversation. We hope every member will take this opportunity to participate in this vital conversation. We’ll craft the “Gather and Grow in God” in a creative visual story that we’ll use to spread the word about what God is doing among us and through us. What do YOU need to do? Think about how Northbrook is important to you. Talk to Marjorie about how you can best share that with the congregation, maybe a paragraph in the newsletter, maybe you can talk about it on a Sunday morning. Sign up for one of the dinners that will take place over the next few months. Bring in photographs that you have taken of events and experiences that you enjoyed here at Northbrook. If you have digital copies, send those to Becky. If you have hard copies, bring them in. We will scan them and return your originals. God is actively at work in our midst, always creating and growing and calling us into a future full of hope. Together, let’s celebrate Northbrook as a place to Gather and Grow in God. As it says in Ephesians 4:15-16: Speaking the truth in love, let us grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love. The Northbrook PWN FUN group is sponsoring our annual trip to watch the Detroit Tigers play ball on Friday, August 18. The cost is $35 and includes a ticket to the 7:00 p.m. game, transportation and spectacular fireworks. Seats are limited, and we will need a payment to secure your seat. Northbrook – A Place to Gather and Grow in God This Fall, we have adopted as our theme “Northbrook: A Place to Gather and Grow in God.” This is an exciting time for us as the building renovations are set to begin, and we prepare to expand our mission through a new staff position dedicated to Outreach Ministries.

Bring in photographs that you have taken of events and experiences that you enjoyed

here at Northbrook. If you have digital copies, send those to Becky. If you have hard copies, bring them in. We will scan them and return your originals.

God is actively at work in our midst, always creating and growing and calling us into a future full of hope. Together, let’s celebrate Northbrook as a place to Gather and Grow in God. As it says in Ephesians 4:15-16:

Speaking the truth in love, let us grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love.

Host Families Needed for an International Music Experience Coming to Northbrook Church

Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp provides student and adult musical organizations with amazing international exchange experiences. We have a tremendous opportunity to host an adult community band of 70 members from Maasmechelen, Belgium as part of the Blue Lake International Exchange Program. They will be arriving and staying August 14-17. We desperately need host families who would be willing to show them the hospitality of Michigan before they leave for their next stop, New York City. They will need a place to stay and sleep as well as meals and transportation. They would be a part of your family for a few days. Our very own Carl Gippert is working with Sharon Chess ([email protected]/313-549-9244) with the Ferndale Community Band who is the main project contact. For more information about hosting band members or about the concert, please contact Carl Gippert at [email protected] or at (248)417-0391.

Join us for a Free Concert featuring the Maasmechelen, Belgium Community Band

Golf Outing Fundraiser for the Second Mile Center of Detroit On Sunday September 24 at 1 p.m., we will be celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the work of the center and trying to help them remain open for as long as possible. Such great work is done there in the worst zip code in Detroit. It's a safe, loving, fun and Christian place for children and families.

This is a Presbytery-wide event, being organized by Northbrook. We are looking for your help. First come and play! Bring friends and family! Get the word out! We are also really in need of prizes, silent auction items (season tickets, baskets, cottage rental, $) and/or sponsoring a hole. Volunteers are also needed.

It will be at Glen Oaks golf course in Farmington Hills, shotgun start, scramble. There will be lunch on course and dinner at the end. All for $120. You can come for dinner only for $65. You may get your own foursome or we will set you up with one. Please see or call Kathy Bauhof or Terri Hurbis. Let's make this event a huge success for the kids of second mile

Northbrook Book Club—Monday, August 28 On Monday, August 28, we will discuss Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This is a powerful, tender story of race and identity. Ifemelu and Obinze are young and in love when they depart military-ruled Nigeria for the West. Beautiful, self-assured Ifemelu, heads for America where despite her academic success, she is forced to grapple for the first time with what it means to be black. Quiet, thoughtful Obinze had hoped to join her, but with post-9/11 America closed to him, he instead plunges into a dangerous, undocumented life in London. Fifteen years later, they reunite in a newly democratic Nigeria and reignite their passion-for each other and for their homeland. Thank you + Thank You + Thank you

What a fantastic week we had with our SOS guests. We had 30 guests from South Oakland County Shelter from May 28-June 4. There were so many people who gave their time, money, support and prayers. Thanks to everyone for pitching in and making this a wonderfully rewarding week. It was truly appreciated by our guests who loved their stay at our church. A special thank you to our SOS TEAM of Bill Travis, Judy Owen, Peggy Schiller, Barb Stetson, Winnie Davis and Sherrill Heinrichs whose time and talents made the journey so special.

Northbrook Rose

For the next three months, I will send chuckles and smiles to our senior friends. However, you younger folks will smile too.

Gray hair has more body. Your 60th high school or college reunion will be a big event. You are old enough to go on senior trips. Think of heart burn as a diet opportunity. When did sixty seem so old. Just turn up your hearing aids, and you will hear what others can not. If you don't like the movie, go to sleep.

If John Travolta can make a come-back, so can you.

Blessings from my house to your house, Rose

We collected at least 32 new linen sets and an assortment of washcloths, towels, and extra pillowcases. Thanks to Donna Young and Betsy Savage for volunteering to coordinate this effort and to Betsy for doing all the washing!!

Thank You to everyone who

donated items for our

Freedom House collection!

Northbrook collected 42 boxes of cereal as well as dried fruit and breakfast bars to support this Presbytery Mission Project.
