Auckland's waterside location has fostered the locals' love affair with the sea, earning this place the nickname "City of Sails". Sprawling over a narrow isthmus between the sparkling waters of the Waitemata and Manukau Harbours a cloak of rainforest covers the surrounding hills, dozens of dormant volcanic cones dot the landscape and enchanting holiday islands are scattered throughout the vast Hauraki Gulf. Two of the best island getaways are Waiheke Island and Great Barrier Island Auckland's heart beats to a Polynesian rhythm, its people a melting pot of European, South Pacific and Asian cultures and a strong indigenous Maori heritage. This diversity brings with it an abundance of unique dining and shopping experiences. New Zealand's indigenous people, the Maori, called this land "Tamaki Makau Rau", a maiden with 100 lovers. It was a place desired by many and fought over for its riches, including its forested hills, productive volcanic soils and harbours full of seafood. The first sailors to settle here were the Maori, and in later years migrants from the Pacific Islands have contributed to the Polynesian population. You can take a walk through the city with a guide from the local iwi (tribe), visit the Auckland Museum, or wander through the weekend markets at Otara and Avondale for the flavours, sounds and sights of the South Pacific. In the city centre, Auckland has seen an explosion of ethnic restaurants and shops, especially Asian-style eateries. With its unique volcanic landscape, living Maori culture, natural hot springs and plenty of options for adventure, Rotorua is one of New Zealand's most famous destinations. When explaining the appeal of their region, the people of Rotorua like to talk of five spirits. You can feel the spirit of the earth, as it rumbles beneath your feet and escapes, hissing, through fumaroles and geysers. You can witness the spirit of Maori culture, with authentic village and performance experiences. With a soak in a natural hot spring or a relaxing massage, you can rejuvenate your spirit. Or free your spirit with outdoor adventures - trout fishing, kayaking, waterskiing, swimming, hiking and mountain-biking. And if it's excitement you crave, you can challenge your spirit with adrenalin-charged extreme activities such as sky-diving, jet boating and zorbing.

Apart from its surprising crater, mountain and lake landscape, Rotorua is memorable for striking Tudor-style architecture and beautiful public parks. The farmland around city is some of the most fertile in New Zealand. Watching a sheep show or staying on a working farm is a great way to get a different view of the region.

Day 4 Rotorua – Hawkes Bay

Today self drive from Rotorua to Hawkes Bay – Approx. 3 hours, 10 mins

Hawke's Bay Province was founded in 1858 as a Province of New Zealand, after being separated from the Wellington Province following a meeting in Napier in February 1858. The Province was abolished in 1876 along with all other provinces in New Zealand. It was replaced with a Provincial District. On February 3, 1931, Napier and Hastings were devastated following New Zealand's worst natural disaster. An earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter Scale killed 256 people. Napier began re-building and now the city is world famous for its Art Deco buildings and celebrates its heritage each February with the Art Deco Weekend. An exhibition on the earthquake, its causes and impact, at the Hawke's Bay Museum and Art Gallery is a popular destination for visitors. Hawke's Bay Wine Country is a holiday destination where the sun seems to forever shine. Famed for being one of the three major winemaking regions in New Zealand, Hawke's Bay is home to internationally acclaimed wines and is the premier New Zealand destination for food, wine and lifestyle. Supported by a Mediterranean climate and a varied landscape from dramatic sea cliffs, to fertile plains and crystal clear rivers that meander down to the Pacific Ocean, the region has a diverse range of things to see and do and hosts a number of icon events throughout the year. For families enjoying the sun, there are golden sand beaches, water theme parks, public swimming pools and crystal clear rivers. Swim with dolphins, visit the National Aquarium of New Zealand or see the largest mainland gannet colony in the world. For the thrill seeker there's plenty to fuel your adrenaline from jet-boating, hot air ballooning, surfing, caving and paragliding to sailing and windsurfing. Day walks, hunting or fishing and golf are popular past times too. A bit of trivia: the region has a hill with the longest place name in New Zealand, and the longest in the world according to the 2009 Guinness Book of records:

“Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu” Meaning: “An unremarkable hill in southern Hawke's Bay, not far from Waipukurau”

Day 5 Hawkes Bay

Art Deco Experience Napier is also unique for its Art Deco. Nowhere else can you see such a variety of buildings in the styles of the 1930s - Stripped Classical, Spanish Mission, and above all Art Deco, the style of the 20th Century - in such a concentrated area. And Napier's Art Deco is unique, with Maori motifs and the buildings of Louis Hay, admirer of the great Frank Lloyd Wright. Enhanced by palms and the angular Norfolk Island pines which are its trademark, and bounded by fertile fruit and grape growing plains, dramatic hills and the shores of the South Pacific, beautiful Napier is the centre of the Hawke's Bay region. In Napier, you can enjoy the legacy of its brave rebuilding and savour the spirit of the optimistic Art Deco era.

Hawke’s Bay Wine & Food Hawke‟s Bay Wine Country is a lifestyle second to none and sets the scene for visitors to explore the region‟s award winning wines and fresh produce, from gourmet meats to a vast array of epicurean delights. The warm climate is conducive to all things living and has earned Hawke‟s Bay the reputation as a leader in food and wine production. Rich soils and warm growing conditions attract innovative epicurean food producers – and at the local culinary outlets and cellar doors, you‟ll have the chance to taste touch and smell their myriad of tantalizing products.

Day 7 Nelson

Today enjoy a private charter experience in the Abel Tasman National Park

Today, join your skipper onboard Taranui for a charter experience exploring the Abel Tasman National Park's coastline; past Split Apple Rock, Kaiteriteri, Marahau, round golden sandy bays, Adele and Fishermans Islands and on to Tonga Island seal colony. You’ll have the chance to kayak around Tonga Island and walk in the park. Enjoy lunch during your time onboard before returning to Stephen’s Bay. The Abel Tasman National Park, simply put, is an outdoor buff's paradise. With magnificent foliage lining pristine beaches and crystal clear water lapping at golden sand, you can be forgiven for thinking you have found ecstasy. The Park is a walkers‟ paradise - spend time exploring the 50 kilometres of awesome coastline. Located at the top of the South Island near Motueka and Kaiteriteri, and only a couple of hours drive from Nelson, this small slice of heaven is accessible and inviting to New Zealanders and tourists alike. Named after the Dutch seafarer Abel Tasman who first visited the area in 1642, the Abel Tasman National Park was opened in 1942 - the 300th anniversary of his visit. The most noticeable features of this park are the golden sandy beaches, the fascinating rocky outcrops (mainly granite but with a scattering of limestone and marble) and the rich, unmodified estuaries. The landscape has been modified, perhaps more than in our other national parks. The vegetation cover varies and reflects a history of fires and land clearance, but the forests are regenerating well especially in damp gullies where a rich variety of plants can be found. Black beech dominates the drier ridges. The more common forest birds, like fantails, tui and bellbirds, can be seen along with pukeko around the estuaries and wetlands. The park's boundary excludes the estuaries and seabed but in 1993 the Tonga Island Marine Reserve was created along one part of the Abel Tasman coast. Like a national park, all life in the reserve is protected.

Day 8 Nelson - Kaikoura

Today self drive from Nelson to Kaikoura – Approx. 3 hours, 30 mins

Kaikoura is a base for wildlife experiences of all kinds – it‟s also a great place to eat crayfish (in the Maori language kai means food, koura means crayfish). The environment is truly spectacular – the village is caught between the rugged Seaward Kaikoura Range and the Pacific Ocean. In winter the mountains are covered with snow, adding to the drama of the landscape. Kaikoura‟s special talent is marine mammal encounters – whales, fur seals and dolphins live permanently in the coastal waters. Whale watching trips leave the town several times a day and the local seal colony is always entertaining. There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and shops dotted around the village, all within easy walking distance of each other.

Hapuku Lodge and Treehouses is surrounded by New Zealand native trees and plants nestled between the mountains and Pacific Ocean and set amongst a totally organic garden Hapuku has been designed to provide a microcosm of the surrounding environment; with six guest rooms, magnificent eco-treehouses and a separate apartment, the lodge also shares the land with a top quality deer stud, and oil-producing olive grove. The much talked about Treehouses, nested in the branches of the Manuka grove were designed by owner Tony Wilson and his brother, Peter Wilson and compliment the spectacular surrounding environment. A unique accommodation experience of sleeping amongst the branches is matched with the luxury of our custom-crafted and ultra-comfy king bed, large spa bath and efficient Danish log-burning fireplaces. Wide-screen televisions, Bose and Ipod stereo systems, rain-fountain showers and heated floors complete the high-level of guest comfort. With stunning mountain and sea views, the individual TreeHouses are named after the native birds which have quickly adjusted to their new neighbours in the trees.

Today you will join one of these unique tours to experience the magnificence of these ocean giants. Every Whale Watch tour is a unique experience and the sightings vary. Giant Sperm Whales are the stars of the show and year-round residents. A typical Whale Watch tour may encounter New Zealand Fur Seals, pods of Dusky Dolphins and the endangered Wandering Albatross. Depending on the season you may also see migrating Humpback Whales, Pilot Whales, Blue Whales and Southern Right Whales. Kaikoura often hosts the world's largest dolphin - the Orca - and is home to the world's smallest and rarest - the Hector's. Kaikoura also attracts the largest concentration and variety of seabirds on mainland New Zealand including 13 species of Albatross, 14 varieties of Petrels and 7 types of Shearwater. Christchurch, justifiably known as the Garden City and as New Zealand‟s most English city is also the gateway to and the biggest metropolis of the South Island. In the central city, the cathedral and other beautifully preserved Gothic architecture is complemented by tree lined avenues, the gently meandering Avon River and the sprawling green playing fields and botanic gardens of Hagley Park, rated among the top ten botanic gardens in the world. You have myriad choices to explore here. The city‟s stunning new art gallery features international and New Zealand artwork dating back centuries. Overlooking the city are the old volcanic hills of Banks Peninsula, and close by is the quaint, French- influenced town of Akaroa, where you can join a wildlife cruise and discover penguins, seals, seabirds and the world‟s smallest and rarest dolphins. Beside Christchurch International Airport, a major departure point for Antarctica, is the International Antarctic Centre, which has been judged New Zealand‟s top visitor attraction. The city caters well for golfers, with three of the country‟s top courses Russley, Terrace Downs and Clearwater all nearby. If you are seeking more serious adventure balloon flights, tandem skydiving and jet boat tours provide the added bonus of views of the Southern Alps, backdrop to the city. For wining, dining and entertainment there are boutique breweries, themed pubs, international hotels with award winning restaurants, a casino, and New Zealand‟s fastest growing wine region in the immediate vicinity.
