Of all traditional Chinese Medicine therapies, acupuncture is far and away the most popular. And why not?
It’s an effective, natural, safe and drug-free therapy that’s beneficial to many conditions.
As conventional Western medicine, practitioners increasingly incorporate acupuncture into their practices and its status is increasing. However, acupuncture is still a mystery to many people. Here are some of the questions I’m frequently asked:
n Does it hurt? Undoubtedly
the most common question, the answer is no. Unlike hypodermic needles used for injections, acupuncture needles are solid and whisker-thin, so actual insertion is painless. When a practitioner brings the needle to the appropriate depth, patients may feel a slight tingling or “heavy” sensation.
n How does it work?
Inserting needles at specific locations (neural nodes) stimulates the
peripheral and central nervous systems. This triggers a release of internal chemicals,
resulting in relief and restoration of your body’s self-regulating processes.
n What conditions does acupuncture treat?
Contrary to common misconception, acupuncture isn’t just for pain relief. Equally effective with acute and chronic issues, acupuncture has been proven effective for myriad conditions, from allergies and
anxiety to migraines and sinus infections. Your best bet is to ask a practitioner if acupuncture can help with your condition.
n Are there side effects?
No, although some patients may experience the occasional bruise.
n How often should I get treatment?
Depending on the severity of your condition, visits are typically twice a week for three to four weeks, then weekly as required.
n How should I prepare for treatment?
Eat a light meal before your
appointment so your body has energy to work with. Make sure you allow time to relax afterward, and remember to keep hydrated.
Whether used on its own or combined with Chinese herbal medicine or another complementary therapy, acupuncture can help people of all ages achieve a better quality of life.

With warmer weather promising summer, plans for the grand opening of Campbell River’s Splash Park are well underway.
“June 15 has been set as the grand opening date for the Splash Park, and we can hardly wait,” says Patricia Gagnon, past president of the Rotary Club of Campbell River. “The Splash Park is another great example of community partners working together to provide a welcome addition to our city that people of all ages can enjoy.”
The project was led by the Rotary Club of Campbell River, and funding was provided by TELUS ($123,200), the Rotary Club of Campbell River ($120,000), Daybreak Rotary ($40,000) the Campbell River Professional Firefighters Association ($20,000) and the City’s Parks Parcel Tax ($75,000). The Splash Park is also supported by in-kind donations from a number of local businesses. City funds will pay for annual operating costs ($30,000).
City staff are working hard
behind the scenes to ensure that all the final touches for the Splash Park at Willow Point Park will be ready for the grand opening, including new washrooms. Washroom facilities near the Splash Park will be located in their own building and designed to look similar to the Sportsplex building.
“The facilities will be right next to the Splash Park and fully accessible, with four family-style washroom/change rooms that will offer a toilet, wash basin, change tables and change area with
bench and hooks,” says Lynn Wark, the City’s parks project supervisor.
The washrooms are being built by local contractor K&L Spooner Contracting. The $142,000 project is funded by Campbell River’s Parks Parcel Tax (a fee charged to each City property to provide dedicated funding to parks improvements).
There will be no charge for access to the park, and the free fun will be divided into three sections: one for families, one for teens and one for toddlers.

HYDE CREEK—Business will continue as usual for travellers who stop in Hyde Creek to fill up on fuel or food on their way to and from the North Island.
But regular customers at the convenience market located on Highway 19 five kilometres south of Port McNeill will have to adjust to a new look and a new name for what has always been known simply as “Hyde Creek Esso” since it was built in 1997. On May 1, work crews completed the changeover of the business to Hyde Creek Petro Canada, the result of a new fuel supply contract negotiated by owner Aaron Gabrysh.
“Fuel contracts typically cover
five or 10 years,” said Gabrysh, an independent owner who purchased Hyde Creek Retail, Ltd., in 2008. “The deal with Petro Canada allows us to deal directly with the supplier. That’s the main advantage. With Esso and Chevron we needed to go through third-party brokers.”
The only real changes to the business, from the perspective of customers, are cosmetic, Gabrysh said. The signs on the highway and the front of the station, along with its four gas pumps, have changed from Esso to Petro Canada. But the the only change inside the store itself is the uniforms worn by staff have gone from the blue, white and red of Esso to the red, white and black of Petro Canada.
“We’re privately owned, not a corporate site,” Gabrysh said. “One positive is we get to carry Petro oil products, but other than that we can sell anything we like.
“And our coffee program is not going to change,” he added with a laugh. “I want to emphasize that.”
The roadside store is a popular stop for coffee and much more, owing in large part to its favourable location. Travellers driving between Port Hardy and destinations farther south on Vancouver Island — particularly big-rig truckers — can get on and off the highway quickly and easily, while a trip to one of two filling stations in nearby Port McNeill requires turning off the highway and traversing an additional kilometre each way to
one of the town’s two filling stations.
The Hyde Creek store is also located at the junction of the access roads to both the Hyde Creek and Nimpkish Heights neighbourhoods, which provide a ready local customer base.
Since purchasing the business in 2008, Gabrysh has already added a kitchen, which produces hot ribs, chicken and jo-jos, and a selection of packaged cold sandwiches and baked goods.
And later this summer, he plans to add a three-station car wash that will be run on a combination of rain and well water.
Boasting two covered bays and an external, RV/truck washing station, it will be the first commercial car wash on the North Island since Port Hardy’s Shell station and car wash closed more than two years ago.
“It was a matter of both customer feedback and the lack of (a car wash) on the North Island,” Gabrysh said.
More than a year ago, he installed an industrial vacuum for cleaning vehicle interiors, “to gauge interest.” The planned wand-type wash, which should be operational by July, will feature a 4- to 5,000 underground collection tank for rainwater.
“The pump is designed to work with rainwater,” Gabrysh said. “When it runs out, it will switch over to the well.”
He said the technology is well-established, citing a car wash in Ucluelet which utilizes rainwater. In the meantime, he plans to acknowledge and thank long-time customers by hosting a grand opening for the new Hyde Creek Petro Canada May 18, featuring a variety of prize giveaways. Though he admits it may take some time for locals to get used to the name.

PAUL RUDAN/THE MIRRORPerfect hair...always!Kerry Fraser was always known as one of the best referees in the National Hockey League, but he was better known for his immaculate coiffure. Now retired from reffing the big boys, Fraser was in Campbell River on Monday night to officiate the charity hockey match between the NHL Oldtimers and the local Law Enforcement club. The undermanned Law Enforcement team weren’t much of a match for the Oldtimers which included Hall of Famers Bryan Trot-tier and Glenn Anderson. Even a couple lopsided trades didn’t help the Cops who fell 17-12...or something like that. See more photos on Page A31.

BC Hydro crews were going flat out much of Monday to repair wind damage that caused power outages from south of Willow Point to north and west of Campbell-ton.
Wind gusting above 100 kilometres Sunday sent a tree crashing onto power lines downtown.
Campbell River Community Centre employees came to work Monday morning to find a cold and dark building.
The centre’s computer system was still idle Monday afternoon. The nearby Scotia-bank was in the dark much of the day.
In all there were more than 25 outages across the city affecting more than 700 cus-tomers.
Residents of the Quinsam Indian Reserve were also in the dark.Outages on Quadra and
Cortes islands affected more than 2,000 customers on Mon-day. More than 500 customers were still without power on the islands on Tuesday.
The Sunday storm also forced cancellation of Camp-bell River to Quadra and Quadra to Cortes ferry sail-ings. Cancellations on the two routes continued into Tuesday.

COMOX VALLEY — Some Comox Valley secondary students got a taste of K’ómoks First Nation culture during an event last week at the Big House.
A handful of students from Mark R. Isfeld, Highland and Vanier secondary schools joined students from the Nala’atsi program and First Nations elders at the K’ómoks Big House.
“It’s a chance for the aboriginal community, and the students and community members to share the culture of the K’ómoks people (and) to enjoy a meal, and the dance, and the celebrations in the welcoming
environment of the Big House,” said event organizer and Nala’atsi teacher Toresa Crawford.
The event started with a welcome and traditional dance performance led by Andy Everson and David Dawson, and featuring a handful of Kumugwe Dancers.
Phil Umpherville, who is Woodland Cree First Nation and moved to the Valley more than 20 years ago, gave a blessing before a huge spread of traditional food was served for lunch.
Cora Beddows, who is from the Kwakiutl band in Fort Rupert, brought raw and fried oolichans (small fish), oolichan oil, dried seaweed and smoked salmon to give the youth a taste of
traditional food. Cory Frank performed a salmon barbecue and pit cook, and dried bison was available for students to try.
Beddows said students seemed to love the food and she was surprised at how many of them tasted the more interesting fare, such as oolichans.
Umpherville, who often tells stories to students in the Comox Valley Aboriginal Head Start program, followed lunch with a story about three young hunters who didn’t honour hunting traditions and were turned into thunderbirds before being saved.
“It’s about traditions. It’s about native beliefs,” Umpherville said. “How important it
is to honour those traditions in those days as a hunter-gatherer society.
“It’s a little bit more about the native spirituality, or the beliefs, mythology, and it gives me an opportunity to explain some of the ceremonies like the shaking tent ceremony that native people had.”
Because the Big House won’t fit all secondary school students in the Comox Valley, organizers choose a few students from each school per year. For example, an English 10 First Peoples class from Vanier, Isfeld’s BC First Nations studies 12 class and a leadership class from Highland, were invited this year, plus Nala’atsi students.
Storyteller Phil Umpherville captivated an audience when some Comox Valley Secondary school students accepted an invitation to the K’ómoks Big House. Photo by Renee Andor

The Victoria Day long weekend is a busy one for Discover Camping, the Province’s camping reservation system, but many BC Parks still offer first-come, first-served campsites for visitors without reservations.
Reservations in BC Parks are up 10 per cent this year to date, at 36,038 reservations compared to 32, 729 reservations in 2012. The most popular parks are Haynes Point, Bear Creek, Cultus Lake, Rathtrevor Beach and
Okanagan Lake South.
To check availability in BC Parks, the public is encouraged to visit the Discover Camping website at: ww.discovercamping.ca
Those searching for long-weekend availability can do so by selecting the desired dates under quick dates in step two and then clicking on the “in a list” icon under find sites.
Many parks have seen upgrades directed
at attracting young families, offering new recreation opportunities, improving accessibility and increasing attendance.
n If you’re on Vancouver Island be sure to check out Rathtrevor Provincial Park’s newly reconstructed campground and improved day use areas, including new picnic shelters and tables.
n The toilet and shower buildings
at Cultus Lake Provincial Park have recently been enhanced to reflect green technology and improve accessibility. New picnic tables have also been installed.
n Visitors to the Kettle River Recreation Area can now enjoy 28 new campsites, picnic tables and a new toilet and shower building, as well as more trails linking existing campground loops.
n In the Kootenays, visitors can enjoy
new picnic tables, signage and other improvements to the trail system at Kikomun Creek Provincial Park. The new Ponderosa campground also provides 37 campsites, two cabins and a shower building.
n Those visiting the Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park can now enjoy a new deck and change houses around the hot spring pool. This has improved accessibility for visitors with
mobility challenges. To find out what’s
new in a park near you, visit: www.BCParks.ca
There are over 5,000 reservable sites in 95 provincial parks throughout British Columbia.
Up to three reservations can be made online in one easy transaction through Discover Camping.
Individual sites are available up to three months in advance, while group sites are available up to 12 months in advance.
Discover Camping is also accessible by mobile devices at: https://secure.camis.com/BCMobile
This is an alternative way to book a campsite from any mobile device or computer.
Reservations can also be made through the call centre at 1 800 689-9025 for a surcharge of $5 (plus tax).
Don’t forget to pick up a free BC Parks Passport at any visitor centre in B.C. and most provincial parks.
