Your Guide to qualifiCations

YoUR GUIDe to QUALIFIcAtIonsnorth Hertfordshire College offers qualifications ranging from entry level to level 5. our tutors and advisors will help you decide which level of study is most appropriate for you, based on your previous qualifications and experience.

if you have not yet taken an exam, or are awaiting examination results, we will base your level of study on your predicted grades. this is subject to change however, and if you do not achieve the grades required, or achieve higher grades than expected, we can adjust your level of study accordingly.

learning at level 1 is about activities that mostly relate to everyday situations and may be linked to job competence.

learning at level 2 involves building knowledge and skills in relation to an area of work or a subject area, and is appropriate for many job roles.

level 4 qualifications include specialist learning that focuses on entering employment. learning at level 4 is designed for students looking to enter employment upon completion or are looking to advance on to a level 5 programme in Higher education.

level 5 qualifications focus on the student’s ability to study subjects in depth, and critically, to gain an advanced understanding. learning at this level involves the demonstration of high levels of knowledge, where the knowledge gained can be applied to specific job roles. level 5 courses at nHC are Higher national diplomas and foundation degrees.

these qualifications focus on fundamental knowledge and skills, and the ability to apply learning to everyday situations under direct guidance or supervision.

learning at level 3 involves obtaining detailed knowledge and skills. it is appropriate for people wishing to go to university, for working independently, or in some areas supervising and training others in their field of work.

GAzeLLeWe are proud to be a member of the Gazelle Colleges Group.

the Gazelle Colleges Group was created in 2011 by five founder colleges, including north Hertfordshire College. the aim of the Gazelle Colleges Group is to work towards the transformation of the group’s colleges through enterprise and entrepreneurship.

Gazelle aims to provide an opportunity to engage with established entrepreneurs, young entrepreneurs and innovators and to bring that experience into the heart of further education.

the Gazelle Colleges Group combines the exceptional experience of entrepreneurs who have succeeded in business with leaders in the further education and wider public sector. they believe that in the current global economic climate it is vital to foster a new generation of social and commercial entrepreneurs; people who can add value to communities, bring innovation to existing businesses and who can create their own employment with confidence and ambition.

further education colleges will play an integral role in achieving this goal, but they must be prepared to make the changes needed to deliver a different outcome for students in the 21st century workplace.

after pitching their ideas to a panel of judges from archant newspaper Group, a team of twelve was assembled to take on roles in design, photography, editorial, journalism, social media, advertising, and sales.

the students attended three mentoring sessions with industry experts from archant, before attending the offices of the Comet for two weeks. after a week of learning, the students got to work producing their own newspaper, which featured a large number of articles and photographs, as well as a new design and new masthead. in addition, the students took over the website, writing up stories for the website, and creating the nHC zone – a dedicated space to create a blog and keep readers up to date with the students’ work.

the Big student news takeover edition of the Comet newspaper was released on 23rd May 2013.

tHe BiG student Hotel takeoverCatering and Hospitality students took over the running of the restaurant and banqueting hall at the Hotel novotel stevenage on 16th and 17th May 2013.

stuart dunlop, Head of Curriculum explained: “the students who study a range of level 1, 2 and 3 professional cookery and food and beverage supervision courses have been able to put the skills they learn at college into a large commercial setting.

“the novotel staff have really stepped back and allowed the students to take over the front of house, bar and kitchen, catering for lunch both days as well as an evening function on both nights. the students worked in pairs and as individuals prior to the takeover to design menus for the evening functions, which were judged by members of novotel staff who then chose elements from each to form the final evening menus.”

introduCinG tHe students’ union

My name is kazeem, and i have been elected by the students as your students’ union (su) sabbatical president 2013- 2014. i joined the su as i felt that nHC students’ ideas and opinions should be heard and action should be taken to improve the social and learning experience students receive.

i have been a student at north Hertfordshire College for almost two years.

student voice plays a very important role at nHC. in ensuring that every student’s voice is heard and that students are at the centre of everything we do, you will have the opportunity to attend events such as: student parliament, student Conference and principal’s question time. this is where students get involved in making decisions about your student experience, how you are supported and what type of learning and teaching experience you want.

students are the priority; the su caters for the needs and requirements of all students ensuring that you receive support, opportunities and an amazing social life. it is a place anyone can make friends.

i hope you have a fantastic year, i wish you all the best of luck. let’s create a WHole neW viBe tHis Year.
