Spring TravelOver the winter blues? Get out

there and enjoy all that spring has tooffer! Here are some suggestions forgreat spring travel locations hereand abroad:

U.S. Virgin IslandsWhy go? Every April, St. Thomas

offers the perfect remedy forpost-winter malaise: Carnival. With itsfood fair, festive parades and ornatecostumes, this island-wide party isone of the best in the Caribbean. Also, with the peak season over, airfare andhotel rates see a significant drop.

AmsterdamWhy go? In the spring, you can

watch the city replace its winter layerswith blooms as you bike alongAmsterdam’s canals. In March, admiretulips at the annual Keukenhof flowerfestival. And in April, check out theoutdoor parties taking place in honorof King’s Day.

Grand CanyonWhy go? Why not skip the summer

vacation tradition and visit this Arizonawonder in the springtime? You’ll haveeasy access to stunning lookoutpoints along the South Rim, plus youshould be able to find discounts onairfare and lodging.

San DiegoWhy go? In the springtime,

spectators can admire San Diego’smain attractions at their best. Thecity’s blooms are on display at theannual Coronado Flower Show, one ofthe largest flower shows on the WestCoast. And the San Diego Zoo hostsseveral family-friendly festivals in Apriland May.

Where do you like to go in thespring??

Bring in the BrightIf your home doesn’t feel as bright

and cheery as you would like, thereare some simple things you can do tochange that.

Lighting. Use floor lamps withsheer shades to spread lightthroughout a room. To brighten adark corner, position a lamp so thelight is pointing toward the ceilingand walls. This reflected glow willminimize shadows.

Walls. Place a mirror opposite a

window or lamp to reflect light backinto the room. Avoid dark paintingsand posters. Instead, considerdecorating with brighter pictures.

Furniture. Heavy furniture canmake any room look dreary. Whenshopping for furniture, avoid pieceswith dark fabrics and wood tones.Sofas and upholstered chairs withouta skirt covering the legs will have alighter feel. If it’s not time to replaceany pieces, consider slipcovers inbright colors.

Windows. If possible, replaceheavy drapes with thinner curtains orsheers, and keep blinds open orhalf-open to let in natural light.

Accessories. Brightly colored throwpillows are an easy way to cheer upany room. Swap out woolly rugs withlight sisal. Pretty bowls and vases canalso add a splash of color. For theultimate cheery pick-me-up, place afresh flower bouquet in your home.

A Tour of American BarbecueBarbecue is enjoyed throughout

the country, but several regionsexcel at it.

Kansas City. This centrally locatedmetropolis smokes chicken, porkspareribs and beef brisket low andslow. However, it’s the thicktomato-based sauce laced withmolasses that makes Kansas City’sbarbecue a go-to American staple. The local specialty, burnt ends, features the sweet, tangy sauceslathered over chopped end pieces ofbeef brisket and pork shoulder.

Texas. Slow-smoked beef brisketis what’s big in Texas. The simplyseasoned brisket, pork ribs and linksausages are tasty enough on theirown. However, feel free to spicethings up with the Lone Star State’sthin, vinegary tomato-based sauce.

Memphis. Pork is king in Memphis, where the pit-cooked smoked ribs are

served dry or wet. Dry ribs are cookedin a spice rub that often includes chili, onion and garlic powders, andpaprika, oregano and celery seed.Wet ribs come in a thin, zestytomato-based sauce.

Carolinas. The eastern half ofNorth Carolina goes whole hog—finelychopped and served with avinegar-based sauce. Head west andyou’ll find a tomato-based sauce overshredded pork shoulder. SouthCarolina prefers its whole hog servedwith a tangy concoction of vinegar, mustard and brown sugar.
