Coming in September — CLASS ON MENTAL HEALTH
From the Couch
Schools are Back in Session Public schools began a couple of weeks ago & most colleges began on Monday. Dickson County has around 9,000 students enrolled in 17 schools (9 elementary, 4 middle, 2 high schools, 1 alternative school, & 1 distance learning school). There are also 3 post-secondary schools in Dickson County: Freed-Hardeman Univ. school of Nursing, Nashville State Community College, & Tenn. College of Applied Technology. Prior to the Revolutionary War, schools in New England were for the purpose of teaching children how to read so they could study the Bible for themselves. Thomas Jeffer-son advocated public education to form good moral character in children. Jesus had a well-rounded education: Luke 2:52 says that He grew in wisdom (intellect), in stature (physical), in favor with God (spiritual), & in favor with man (social).
Giving from Beyond the Grave Oscar & Barbara (Meeker) Martin loved this church & served several ministries: Jail, Wednesday Meals on Wheels, & Fellowship Groups. Both died last year, Barbara in June & Oscar in December. They remembered this church in their will with a gift of $46,600 to be used for scholarships for Christian Colleges. The gift will be invested & the interest generated will fund the Martin-Meeker scholarship fund. Any good done by these monies will be remembered by God. Rev. 14:13 “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them.” Anyone seeking information about col-lege scholarships can talk to Tom Todd.
New Adult Bible Classes in September 3 Sunday Morning Adult Bible Classes. The auditorium class will study 13 lessons on the Exploits of David. Another class meeting in the fellowship hall will study the Para-bles of Jesus (Sept.-Dec.). A third class geared for Young Adults meets in a side classroom between the fellowship hall & the lobby. They are studying various topics suggested by class members. 2 Wednesday Night Adult Bible Classes. A 4-month study on the Bible & Mental Health will be taught in the auditorium. A ladies’ class is studying the book Sarah’s Daugh-ters and meets in the side classroom between the fellowship hall and the lobby. Additional Classes. On Monday mornings at 8:30 in the church library, a group of men are studying the Holy Spirit. On Thursday mornings at 10:00 in the sewing room, a group of ladies are studying the I Am’s of Jesus. Classes for Children. We offer classes for all ages on Sundays & Wednesdays from the Cradle Roll to High School., then on Sunday nights we have a Bible Hour for younger children in the basement. Pray for our Bible school & support it every opportunity you have.

WORDS
FROM THE
CROSS
John Gipson
At Golgotha God did His best and man his worst. The
greatness of Christ can be easily discerned by the seven
sentences He uttered from the cross.
(1) “Father forgive them, for they know not what they
do.” Despite everything done to Him, there was no
trace of resentment, no anger, no desire to get even.
He was still being true to His mission to seek and save
the lost.
(2) “Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.” The
thief was unworthy, but we must remember that
there are no hopeless cases with Jesus.
(3) ”Woman behold thy son. Son behold they mother.”
Even while he is suffering, Jesus is thinking about oth-
ers.
(4) “My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken Me? “
Mental torment is harder than physical. Can you
think of any other time Jesus ever asked God a ques-
tion? Have you ever felt forsaken by God?
(5) “I thirst.” Is not this clear evidence of the humanity
of Jesus?
(6) “It is finished.” In the words of W.T. Hamilton, “All
that He had come to do was done. Prophecies ful-
filled; atonement made; law fulfilled; suffering over.
This is a statement of victory.”
(7) “Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit.” There
was no doubt. His trust was still in God. God would
take care of Him. Charles Allen describes this cry and
the “cry of faith.”
The building always looks so good from the road with the beauti-
ful plants and flowers, thanks to the hard work of Lori Goodman
and her green thumb. The flower beds are kept neatly trimmed
and watered every day. We appreciate the talents God has giv-
en Lori to create beautiful spaces!
When a flashlight grows dim or quits working, do you
just throw it away? Of course not. You change the bat-
teries. . When a person messes up or finds them-
selves in a dark place, do you cast them aside? Of
course not! You help them change their batteries.
Some need AA...attention and affection; some need
AAA...attention, affection, and acceptance; some need
C....compassion; some need D...direction. And if they
still don’t seem to shine...simply sit with them quietly
and share your light.
Our Sympathy to the family of Marilyn Carpenter, who passed
away August 14. She was the wife of Elwood Carpenter and
sister-in-law of Farris Tidwell.
