to our facilities, particularly the Walter Jennings Sports Facility at the Glenlee site. our new soccer fields and ball diamonds at the Norberry site hosted many games.

Hundreds turned out for the annual Knight of Celebration in June. And we launched a successful new Pickleball program that hosts the young at heart throughout the week.

there’s a new face on your Board of Directors, Summer Sports Director, Chipalo Simunyola. And we said goodbye a second time to Wendy Fawcett, who returned from retirement last year to fill a vacancy but has since handed over her keys for good.

“A welcoming place where community spirit thrives”

We couldn’t do what we do without the unstinting support of people in our community. they coach, they manage, they organize, and they step up to do whatever needs to be done for the benefit of our teams and our families.

We now look forward to a busy winter of hockey and ringette, basketball, Pickleball, cards, dancing and much more. News about any new programming will be announced on our website, so check back often.

the Board and staff will continue to work to make NGCC a welcoming place for athletes of all ages, where community spirit thrives.

this year, SVMHA has joined many other associations and switched to online registration. By the time you get this newsletter, the program will be up and running, so visit their website at stvitalhockey.ca to get started!

For those who do not have access to a computer or have problems with online registration, SVMHA will try and have a few laptops available at our registrations on Sept. 4th and 7th to help you out.

online registration has created a couple of hiccups for NGCC, as we are one one of the last community centres that has a “Family Booster Fee” as opposed to a “per program/child fee” that most CC’s have adopted.

once on the site, you will enter NGCC as your CC. it will then ask if you need to purchase your yearly booster fee. if you paid this $50 fee in March, you do not need to pay it again. But if you did not register for any Spring programs and do not have a 2013 membership, you will have to purchase it at this time. there will also be an online question about volunteering. if you indicate that you will volunteer, you will be advised to come to NGCC and sign up for your shift(s) and leave your deposit cheque at our volunteer table on September 4th and 7th.

if you prefer to pay the $100.00 per child fee, there will be an option to pay online. We are hoping that we will still have people volunteer as oppose to paying, as volunteering is a great way to keep in touch with your Centre and give back to your Community.

if you have more specific questions about online registration, please email [email protected]

PICKleball aT nGCC !!!

What do you get when you combine the games of badminton, ping pong and tennis? Pickleball!

it’s one of the fastest growing sports in Canada.

the game of Pickleball involves an underhand serve with limited running, making this an ideal sport for the “mature” person. Played with an oversized paddle, one can become a “Wimbledon Wonder” with very little effort. Both the paddle and ball are lightweight, so it’s easy on the body and joints with fewer impacts or elbow injuries.

Pickleball at Norberry-Glenlee Community Centre takes place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12:00 noon until 3:00 pm in the gym at the Norberry site on Molgat Avenue.

New players are always welcomed and paddles are provided for those just wanting to try it out for the first time. Players have the option of paying a drop-in fee or a quarterly fee.

Although the late spring delayed all of our outdoor spring sports, we still had a very good season despite the wet weather this year.

our new soccer field at the Norberry site was a nice addition to the growing sport as well as our new diamond that was put to the test with our first class baseball teams.

We had a student from Quebec that was part of the yM/yWCA exchange program working with us for six weeks. this was the third year we have worked and benefited from the yM/yWCA program. We also received a summer student from the Manitoba Metis Federations training and development program. We also received two Green team employees who worked 5 hours a day for four months. All the students did very well in helping us get a lot done this summer.

WJSF REnOVATIOnSWe revamped our bathrooms at the old Glenlee site (Walter Jennings Sports Facility), upgraded the lighting and repainted the exterior of the building this year. We are looking for additional funding/grants to renovate the common area and hallway, and upgrade our security system both inside and out. nEW GYM EQUIPMEnT AT nGCCRecently our gym equipment has been upgraded, with thanks going out to the Province of Manitoba and their Sport opportunities Grant, and the GCWCC Programming grant. We now have safety pads for our volleyball nets, 2 sets of badminton poles and nets, new Pickleball equipment as well as new aluminum soccer nets for the indoor soccer programs at NGCC.

Hello again!

i hope that everyone has had an enjoyable summer, because in a few short weeks, we will need to get back into the swing of things at NGCC, school and work.

Registration for the 2013-2014 winter season will be here before we know it. this year, St.Vital Minor Hockey is switching to online registration (see the SVMHA goes Online article on page 4) so we will only be hosting 2 registrations days, on September 4th and 7th.

“Hockey Knights in Canada!”

We salute our 11A2 hockey team. Although they had a challenging year on the ice, they were showcased on Hockey Night in Canada as the host team on the February 16th broadcast. you can view all the clips on CBC HNiC website: cbc.ca/sports/hockeynightincanada/hockeytonight/video

And still talking of our 11A2 hockey team, they were the recipients of the imperial oil Esso Medal of Achievement Award, which garnered them a $1,000 prize which they used for a super-fun windup, as well as a $10,000 donation to SVMHA. Way to go team!

Another former Norberry member captured attention in the news as well. Deena Caplette was one of 9 finalists from 350 contestants

across Canada for the $100,000 prize in the 2013 BDC young Entrepreneur Award. She was the only Manitoba finalist and although she did not receive the most votes, it brought attention to her business, Kid City - Winnipeg’s ultimate indoor Playcentre. Well done, Deena!

Finally, for anyone who is not familiar with Pickleball, check out our information on our website under the Programs tab as well as in our newsmagazine.

For anyone who is not familiar with Pickleball, check out our information on our website under the Programs tab as well as in our newsmagazine. it’s the fastest growing game in Canada and a new program to NGCC. Pickleball is played in the gym Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 12 noon and 3 pm. you don’t have to be a pro and it’s a great way to not only get exercise, but socialize too.

Finally, the new tV in the entrance area at the Norberry site is now being used for a PowerPoint presentation. throughout the year, we’ll be showcasing teams that have done well in tournaments, play-offs, etc. as well as letting everyone know about upcoming events at the NGCC. So remember, look up! you might be on tV. if you have anything that you would like to see added, please email me your information at [email protected]

i look forward to seeing everyone at registration!
