SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
...and that, along with elapsed time and boat speed,is how you know where you are.
What about that star? the one that looks
like it's moving?
that would mean nobody's seen it
since Moses brown was founded!
that's correct--though it was a little brighter back
then...
That's actually the
brow-mesons comet. it passes earth every 231
years.
My name is Mr. Brown, but you may call me moses.
who-?!Wha-??
What of it?if you think my name is
strange, you should look at your clothes!
moses
brown?!
No offense
intended, sir. it's
just...we're from a
school by that name!
I didn't know there was more than one...
There
isn't!
Just ours!
pray tell...
what is the date??
In providence!
October 17, 2014.
if these are schoolchildren, why aren't
they in class?
but we are in class!
Mr. moses, we are!We use math to deduce our position, and geography to fix it!
...and learning about how physics
makes our boat go!
we call it
'project-based
learning,' but the idea
has been around a
while...
...and i think i recall you
advocating the practical application
of knowledge yourself.
you call this
school? a sail
around the bay?
you should be learning mathematics, science, geography, literature...
...and those clouds reveal the thermal activity in the western part of the state...
i can see how you'd learn a lot out here.
We travel to all kinds of places!
Well, you're becoming adults. you should see a
bit of the world.
Oh, it's
not just
us...
Kids in every division go out into the world to learn first-hand...
lower schoolers hike part of the appalachian trail!
...and for 40 years, middle schoolers have been learning to depend on each other on team trips!
...and language teachers immerse students in the languages they study in places like-
Central falls!
québec!
-and spain!!
after all, if you wanna learn about rocks, there's no place like the rockies!
All right,
crew, take us
home!
and this is MB's new
sailing and marine education
center, where we can study the
unique ecology of
narragansett bay...
It's a long story, but there's a machine inside that makes it go. No horses
needed.Horses?
Where are the horses?
for the carriage.
It runs on garbage!
She's kidding. it runs on waste cooking oil from our
school cafeteria. Sort of like you might burn whale oil, releasing an
exothermic chain reaction of hydrocarbons to-
like i said, It runs on garbage.
astounding...and thrifty!
but part of the reason we
learn by doing is so we can apply what we know for the good
of others.
Unfortunately, yes.All this progress--and there is still
poverty??
...and raising money for schools in sidikho and Chebuyusi, Kenya, and then going there ourselves to help renovate the schools and teach younger children...
...like creating a music education program at the san miguel school in providence...
...and traveling to the dominican republic every spring to bring medical supplies and conduct wellness clinics.
it is a
quaker
school, you
know!
...like creating a music education program at the san miguel school in providence...
do all children learn
like you? that's why our goal is to increase scholarships by a million dollars a
year.
we wish...
it's..n-not...possible!
dr. glendinning, this is...moses brown. there was a
comet or something. cap'n casey can
explain it.
you mean the buildings?
in english, man!
What's he still
doing here??
it's about the three core
principles of a moses brown education...
like expert thinking, which is
learning to apply one's knowledge to a real
problem...
they're the result of MB believes, our
strategic vision for-
so, doctor, how long has my school
been like this?
i mean classes on sailboats, and in the
city streets.
ah yes. the students told me all about
project-based learning.
they travel to places like colorado, kenya, and spain to broaden their understanding?
Another principle is 'global awareness,' the idea that
students need to understand others' perspectives in our interconnected world. So we've started the trips
program, in which-
well, it's the teachers you should thank. because of their work, we've received a $50,000 grant to advance this kind of learning...
well, yes. and then there's 'ethical leadership,' in which we-
You focus on the testimonies of
community and stewardship. the children told me all
about it. you've accomplished a great
deal.
Dean Woodman '46 gave $5 million to create
the woodman community and performance center!
russ carpenter '59 gave
$3.6 million to create the Russell H. Carpenter '59
program in teaching excellence!
...through their innovations in project-based learning, we've advanced the field of education on the national stage, and inspired some of the biggest gifts in our school's history.
The parents of
the class of 2014 gave $1.94
million to advance mb believes!
and just as you and samuel slater
applied your knowledge to revolutionize
textile manufacturing, our students are thinking
like real-world experts, applying their own
knowledge to...
...create the perfect backpack
...build and program robots
...design wind-powered cars
...complex machines ...and energy-producing turbines!
these kids are
letting their lives
speak-loudly.
there's nowhere to sit..how can you worship like
this?
it's hard. that's why we're building a new community and performance center...
speaking of
which...would you join
us for some silence?
...with enough space for meeting for worship...
...and seats that retract, providing flexible space for exhibitions and social events...
...and professional-grade sound and lighting for the performing arts...
...while providing a centrally-located gathering space to bring our entire community together.
This will be our legacy, and our way of continuing yours.
so, you see, Moses...wha--??
