Modern design, with respect to minimumloss of energy, requires long life and lowestpower loss due to friction of all compo-nents. One of GMN's answers to thischallenge is a wide range of high qualityand high precision ball bearings. Anotheranswer is producing non-contact seals oftwo different types.

GMN have designed complete units readyfor mounting. They give economic solutionsfor many sealing problems, which allownon-contact sealing of rotating machineparts.

GMN Labyrinth Seals are produced frommetallic material, inner ring steel; outerring aluminium, by a special and patentedproduction process, which guarantees thetotal identity of inner rings and outer ringslabyrinth profile. Thus a highly efficient sealagainst splashing liquids and/or coarseand fine granular contaminants is achieved.GMN Seals can be used for manyapplications under extreme conditions, high speed and high temperatures. Thestandard model can be used up totemperatures of 170 C (340 F) at thealuminium outer ring. Temperature of theshaft and seals inner r ing may be higher. If a non-contact seal in needed for highertemperatures please contact our technicalstaff.

The GMN Gap SealFor the standard model a high quality plasticmaterial is used which provides remarkableresistance to a wide variety of chemicals.

This material enables the seal to be usedin a broad range of applications. It is oftenused in the Food Processing Industries.

The plastic material which is of a highstrength can be used for temperatures of40 C to 60 C (40 F to 140 F).

A very high accuracy of the labyrinth gapis achieved by turning the molded innerand outer ring of the seal with the sametool. The very smooth surface achieved bythis turning process is a prerequisite forthe high efficiency the GMN Gap Seal.

Due to technical progress nowadays it isnecessary to find the best solution for everycomponent used on newly designedmachinery to save costs on energy andmaintenance. An important machineelement is the sealing system which hasto fulfil a huge variety of requirements.

Non-Contact Seals could be used for alarge number of applications. Quite oftena special labyrinth seal is too expensive: Itis necessary to manufacture 14 fits to geta seal with only 3 labyrinth steps and veryoften the mounting space of custom madelabyrinth seals is very large.

The GMN Non-Contact Seal has becomefamous for its compact design. Please seethe comparison with standard contact sealsin the table below. The main benefits ofGMN Non-Contact Seals are: Low cost Small mounting space Ease of mounting Reliable sealing against splashing liquids

    and granular contaminants.

Sometimes a combination of contact sealand non-contact seal may solve very difficultsealing problems. For example if a gearbox is lubricated with large amounts of oil oil level higher than the sealing diameter and bearings have to be protected againstvery coarse contamination. For this typeof application a GMN Non-Contact Sealcould be used to protect the contact sealand increase the lifetime of the wholesystem.

GMN Labyrinth Seals are complete unitsof two rings with built in labyrinth: The innerring is made of steel the outer ring is madeof aluminium. They are ready for mountingbut inseparable. The profile shows at leastthree labyrinth peaks. Standard modelsare supplied with widths of 10, 15 and20 mm depending on seal diameter. For awide range of applications GMN offers twodifferent designs:

    Figure 1

The basic LType against coarse and finegranular contamination and light splashingliquids.

    Figure 2

The M-Type against coarseand fine granular contaminationand heavy splashing liquids.

    Design

The "M Type seal is designed withperipheral grooves which allow liquidssplashed into the first labyrinth gap to becentrifuged into a circular groove ofcustomers mating part. The liquid may flowback via a drain hole to the reservoir or tothe outside. The correct dimensioning ofthe circular groove and the drain hole is anecessary requirement for high sealingefficiency.

The maximum efficiency of non-contactseals is achieved during rotation. Whenheavy splashing liquids are expected while

machine parts are stationary care shouldbe taken that splashing directly onto theseal does not occur. This could be achievedeasily by a disc or a shield which shouldbe mounted on the shaft. Please see alsopages 14 to 17 for more details andexamples.

The precision of the rings and accuracy ofthe gap are essential for the efficiency of

the seal which could be guaranteed forevery single GMN Labyrinth Seal with aspecial production process.

The catalog information on axial end playSa in the tables refers to the total axialmovement of the seals inner and outerring in relation to each other; from one endposition to the other. Normally the sealshould be installed in flush position - thusthe axial allowance would be half the valuein either direction. Axial and radial clearanceare almost of the same size, and do interfereeach other.

An additional solution for high requirementsof axial clearance can be offered by specialproduced seals with increased end playby factor 1.5. If aggressive of corrosivemediums have to be sealed GMN labyrinthseals could be made from differentmaterials. DesignThe GMN Gap Seal is mounted from twoplastic parts, which create a zig zag shapedgap based on a conic envelope, thus thediameter of the sealing gaps are increasedstep by step from e1 on the dry side to e2on the side facing the contaminant. Peaksand valleys of the inner and outer ringsprofiles (turned by the same tool) mergewith each other so that they may besnapped together during the mountingprocess at GMN but are shipped as aninseparable unit.

Material: Polyacetal resin TK AD;Delrin 100

    Temperature limits:

    40 C to 60 C40 F to 140 F.

Chemical ResistanceThe acetalresin our seals are made of isresistant against a large variety of chemicalsas: the most of the common organicsolvents, alcoholes, esters, ketones, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbonats, greases and oils. Alcaloid water and baseeven at higher temperature do not harmthe material. On the other hand this material may not

be used to seal against oxidators andorganic and anorganic acids (pH < 4).

Another advantage of this material is thevery low value of water pickup (max. 0.8%).Detailed information about the resistanceagainst certain chemicals could be foundin the internet in the sectionseals/gap seals/technology: www.gmn.de

Sealing principleThe basic principle of a labyrinth seal isbased on the geometric shape of thelabyrinth which causes some turns of thecontaminant on its way to penetrate theseal. With the GMN Gap Seal the efficiencyof the centrifugal force to accelerate thecontaminant radially to throw it away fromthe sealing gap is increased by the conicenvelope of the labyrinth. To penetrate theseal the contaminant has to overcome thecentrifugal force by creeping from the largerlabyrinth diameter facing the contaminantto the smaller diameter on the dry sideof the seal. Particles penetrating the firststeps of the conic labyrinth are expelledby the centrifugal force and led back to

the side of the seal facing the contaminant.

There is no chance for a Gap Seal to protectagainst higher liquid levels and a pressuregradient between inside and outside of aNon-Contact Seal. Pressure gradients maybe reduced or throttled but not sealed.

The right mounting directionCare should be taken to install the GapSeal the right way the larger labyrinthdiameter has to point to the contaminant.

Axial and radial clearanceThe axial end play refers to the total axialmovement of the seals inner and outerring in relation to each other; from one endposition to the other. Axial and radialclearance of the seal are almost the same approximately 0.5 mm. Both interfereeach other. Normally the seal should beinstalled in flush position thus the axialallowance would be half the value in eitherdirection.

Protection against dustFor this type of requirement the Gap Sealmay be filled with grease before the mount-ing to increase the sealing efficiency againstdusty environment. Please mark your order

pre-greased. A certain amount of thegrease may be moved out

Heavy splashing liquidsThere should be enough free space in frontof the seal to allow free dropping or flowingof the splashing liquid. In addition theSa Type for rotating shafts or theSi Type for rotating housings could beused.

The high quality plastic material used forthe standard model of GMN Gap Seals iswell known for its stability and chemicalresistance in a large number of applicationsin the capital goods and consumer goods

industries. Due to its resistance to bacteriaand fungi this material can be used in FoodProcessing and Food Conveying Industries.

The three drawings shown above areguides for the best choice of GMN GapSeals. The most efficient design dependson whether the shaft of the housing rotates.

    Type kSi

One of the prerequisites for the bestperformance of the seal is the correctmounting of the seal. Below we list someguidelines.

Mounting PositionIt is very important that the GMN Gap Sealis mounted correctly. The bigger labyrinthdiameter must be pointing to thecontaminant. If the seal is used for twosealing functions to prevent infiltration ofcontaminants into a unit and to retain thelubricant inside the unit, two GMN GapSeals should be used in opposite directions.

A spacing ring between the two inner ringswould be necessary. Minimum width ofspacing ring is 2 mm.See page 20, figure 21.With thekSa Type and thekSi Type careshould be taken that the built in drain is atthe lowest point of the stationary part ofthe GMN Gap Seal.

Radial ClearanceLoose radial clearance must be avoidedby accurate bearing support. Out ofroundness of shafts and housings have alarge influence on the sealing function they must be kept to a minimum.

Axial ClearanceGMN Gap Seals allow an axial clearanceof .5 mm (.020 inch) in total that means.25 mm (.010 inch) in each direction fromthe flush position of the inner and outerrings of the seal.

Axial WobblingTo prevent axial wobbling of the rotatingring it should be mounted against a

shoulder. The shoulder should be squareto the shaft and be within a close tolerance.

    Mounting instructions

On request we will be pleased to suggestand produce special seals for specialapplications, e.g. special dimensions. Forslightly higher temperatures than the limitof 60 C up to 80 C (175 F/194 F) weoffer a special design with O-rings at theinner and/or outer ring to increase thereliability of the press fit. Please contactour technical staff at no obligation.

For some applications the efficiency ofGMN Gap SealkS Type is increased whenfilled with grease. This greasing can bedone at the GMN plant. Please mark yourorder pregreased.

Also state the brand name if a specialgrease is needed depending on yourcontaminant.

Pregreasing is possible for GMN Gap SealkS Type only.

The dimensions of GMN Non-ContactSeals are close to antifriction bearing orcontact seal standards. On request we willproduce seals with special dimensions. Ifin doubt please contact our technical staff.

Contact seals, especially at higher speedsrequire hardening of the shaft as well as ahigh surface finish at the sealing location. With the use of GMN Non-Contact Seals, hardening and grinding of the mating partsis not necessary. Tolerances of the sealhave been designed so that mounting fitsusual for antifriction bearings can beaccepted.

In any event the necessary press fit will beobtained. Additional bonding elementsnormally will not be necessary.

If its necessary to decrease the press fitdue to the design of the whole assembly, fits H7, G7 respectively g6 and f7 canbe used. With these fits industrial gluesfor additional bonding of the GMNLabyrinth Seal onto the shaft and intothe housing should be used. Surface finishRZ 6,3 mm. The outer ring might be0,1 mm wider than the inner ring.

    13

Method II(Mounting position inside the unit)For assemblies where face mounting is notpossible due to the design, GMN- LabyrinthSeals my be installed the following way,see figures 12a, 12b, 12c.

    Fig. 12a

GMN Labyrinth Seal preassembled on theshaft.

    Fig. 12b

The shaft is slowly pushed into the bearinghousing. The bearing flange is held in thecorrect position by a split shim of widthSa/2.

    Fig. 12c

The shim is removed and the flange is fixedby screws. Now the labyrinth ring is installedin the correct position for operation.

One of the most important requirementsfor the mounting of GMN Labyrinth Sealsis to guarantee wobble free running of theinner ring. Therefore we recommend thatthe inner ring should be pressed againsta solid shoulder of the shaft as shown inthe section Typical Applications seepage 18, figure 14. The shoulder and theshaft must be square and within a closetolerance. Three different methods whichare commonly used for mounting areshown below.

Method I(Face mounting position)For these applications we recommendmounting by a mounting bushing, whichcovers the inner and outer ring, seefigure 4. Due to the fact that both rings arealmost of the same width they will belocated in the working position after mount-ing. The difference of width, 0.1 mm intotal, does not matter for normal appli-cations. The outer ring will be, at maximum,0.1 mm wider than the inner ring.

For high precision units or when axialclearance has to be used totally a recesscould be a machined on the mountingbushing and thus put the two rings intothe position required.

    Fig. 11

With the GMN Gap-Seals basically thesame mounting instructions are applicable.

The only difference would be the fact thatboth inner and outer ring are of thesame width.

Method IIIThis method can be used when neitherface mounting nor preassembly on theshaft is possible, see figures 13a and 13b.

The spacing ring usually placed betweenthe ball bearing and the fan wheel isintegrated in the seal inner ring.

Thus an economical solution for highvolume production quantities is achieved.

    Sealing an electric motor

The application shown in figure 15 requirestwo sealing functions against two differentheavy splashing liquids. The solution is touse two GMN Labyrinth Seals M Type.

One seal is used to prevent penetration ofthe cutting oil from the outside.

    Double sealing of a spindle

Sealing the axle of aspecial vehicle

The combined seal shown in figure 16 isjust a proposal, not an economic product. If there is more space a stock item lip sealand a non-contact seal can be used.

Liquid splashed into the first gap is centri-fuged by the peripheral grooves of the M

Type seal into a circular groove of at least5 mm depth.

The cutting oil can flow back to the outsidevia a drain hole. Using the same systemoil lubricant will be led back to the reservoirby the second seal.

The GMN Labyrinth Seal L Type protectsthe lip seal against coarse and fine granularcontamination as well as against heavysplashing water.

If some water penetrates the seal whenthe axle is immersed into water for a shorttime the grease lubricated bearings areprotected by the lip seal.

This combination of contact and non-contact seals increases the life of the entireunit.

    Sealing a high frequencygrinding spindle

The GMN Labyrinth Seal L Type has toprotect the high precision bearings againstgrinding chips and lightly splashing liquids.

The excess pressure caused by the oil mistlubrication increases the sealing efficiency.

To protect the seal against splashing liquidswhen the spindle is stationary an additionalfront plate should be used.

MountingFor mounting a bushing is used to pushthe seal onto the shaft and into the housingin one operation. To reach wobblefreerunning make sure that the inner ring is

square against the shoulder of the shaft.

    Sealing a drilling sleeve

The grease lubricated bearings have to beprotected against cutting oil and chips.Due to the vertical mounting position theflange must be designed correctly becauseit is not possible to protect the inside againstvertical splashing liquids by an uncoverednon-contact seal.

    TypicalApplications

With this application it is absolutelynecessary to use a contact seal to keepthe lubricant inside the gearbox. It isimpossible to use a non-contact seal if thelevel of the lubricant is higher than thesealing diameter.

A GMN Gap Seal is used to protect the lipseal against rough contamination and toincrease the life of the whole sealing system.

Mounting:There is no axial limitation for the mountingdepth of the GMN Gap Seal. Therefore itis necessary to true the face of the seal tothe face of the housing. The face of thehousing has to be square to the housingbore.

    Sealing an automotivewheel bearing

For this application we recommend a GMNGap SealkS Type filled with grease asadditional sealing to prevent the penetration

by splashing liquids, dirt and dust. Easeof mounting for car repair purposes isachieved by this design.
