Things are winding down for the 2014-2015 school year! We are in the final sports season of the year and it is now time to plan ahead for the 2015-2016 athletic year.
We usually have our basketball players attend a Basketball Camp at some point in June, but this year we are fortunate enough to have the Southwest Deaf Basketball Camp be hosted at NMSD during the dates of June 10-14!
The complete brochure and registration information can be found at our website, www.nmsd.k12.nm.us. If you have any questions about this camp, feel free to contact me at either [email protected] or 505-216-2025.
REMINDER: Please have your child’s physical completed BEFORE sports camp begins in August. I would highly recommend that the physical be completed in late July or the first week of August.
Inside, you will see some information about the benefits of having your child attend sports camp. This article is highly informational!

NMSD ATHLETICSTop 8 Benefits of Sending Your Kids to Sports
Camp
1. They are a way to release energy. Instead of children wreaking havoc on your house, allow them to dispel their energy by playing a sport. Let’s face it, going up for a layup or intercepting a pass is much better than jumping on the bed.
2. They are an escape. Life is so full, and oftentimes it proves beneficial to just get away from the normal routine. When playing a sport, your primary focus is the game- your next move, how you’re going to succeed- and all other responsibilities temporarily fade.
3. They’re fun! Sports, especially when played at a young age, focus on this aspect. It’s one time in your life where this is the main goal, as opposed to winning at all costs. Winning becomes more important in the higher levels.
4. They teach dedication and a good work ethic. They demonstrate that practice involves a lot of hard work, but if you persevere through whatever obstacles stand in your way, your efforts are sure to pay off.
5. They stress the importance of staying active. With obesity rates rising in the U.S., children need to realize that exercise is crucial to maintaining a healthy body and well being.
6. They allow children to develop skills that will last a lifetime, both on and off the court- physically, mentally and emotionally.
7. They allow unlikely friendships to occur. Children who normally would not hang out together are united by a similar interest: whatever sport they’re playing, and they are forced to work together in order to achieve their goals.
8. Children learn teamwork, sportsmanship and healthy competition. Even for the future doctor or lawyer, these valuable things learned by playing sports will apply to various careers.

FAMILY CORNER“What?...it’s May already!?!?” There’s an old saying that “time flies when you either very busy or having fun”. This past academic year was exactly that. With the 2014-2015 academic year just weeks away from coming to a conclusion, it’s time to reflect on this past year and plan for the future. Take the time to recall milestone moments of your child this past year. Revisit the moments of exhilaration or achievements, celebrate them if you haven’t yet already. I could be a simple “great job on improving your reading level this year!” or “I am proud of your hard work at school and home”. Of course we also need to assist our children with improving in areas of concern. How? Review your child’s IEP and progress reports you’ve received this past year, are there areas where the family can help at home? If you are not sure, contact your child’s Primary Contact Teacher to discuss ways to assist with your child’s academic and social developments. Learning doesn’t just happened at the school, home is also an environment where learning can happen on a daily basisIn any case, make this a summer of being together for both learning and fun!
