Tell uS SoMeThing ABouT youRSelF.i am from hong Kong and currently a 2nd year student in SFu majoring in communication with a minor in French. i love partying and i love beer, any kind of beer. i am obsessed with shoes and i love photography.

Why do you liKe PhoTogRAPhy?i got my first camera from my dad when i was 14. it was a nikon Fe-2 film camera. i don’t really know why i like it but i just started shooting ever since. Maybe because it is fun i guess? i don’t really have a particular thing or subject i like shooting specifically, i’ll just shoot and be creative and now i’ve ended up with a jillion of photo albums of random photos. i actually wanted to go to photography school before, but considering the career path is so difficult and competitive, i eventually decided to go to regular school indeed.

15

Page 16: NISY WEBZINE ISSUE 02

FilM oR digiTAl?i like film more. it is true that in the digital world, a picture can be so cheap that you can just keep snapping the shutter, but at the end of the day, you realize there are so many crappy photos. in the film world, you will cherish every shot you take. i also enjoy the element of surprise. you never know how your photos have turned out until they are developed. The only setback is the cost. Films are so expensive!

Tell uS ABouT youR oBSeSSion WiTh ShoeS.i love shoes. i don’t have a lot of clothes but i have a lot of shoes. i have around 20 pairs back in hong Kong and around 30 pairs here in vancouver. i use to have more but there is not enough room to store them so i have to throw them out. it is sad. i know shoes are not a necessity but i just want them. you don’t need many sets of clothes as you can mix and match your tops and bottoms, but you definitely need a different pair of shoes to match your specific outfit.

21

Page 22: NISY WEBZINE ISSUE 02

WhAT Kind oF ShoeS do you liKe?i like sneakers. like nike or Converse. i rarely wear heels unless i have to dress up. i prefer bright colors and high tops. They look so good! i especially like Converse sneakers. They come in so many colors you can just match them with anything. i like drawing on my Converse too. i think it give the sneakers more character. Somehow i don’t really like Adidas sneakers. i think they are too sporty and boring. nike Air Force is much better.

how best to describe a Sushi restaurant that manages on so many levels to defy the common norms of what one expects at other restaurants of the same ilk? if one is to assume a traditional Japanese / Sushi based restaurant to be quaint, petite and essentially uniform in its ambience and food, we happily encourage any and all persons visiting or living within vancouver to explore this funky antithesis and have The eatery marked as a restaurant and lounge to be experienced. From the decorative and purposefully outlandish décor and references to popular figures and icons as ‘Astro Boy’ and paintings you would swear as the night goes on (more so if you decide to explore a night filled with ‘sake bombs’) were all done by Andy Warhol himself; needless to say if you’ve never heard of or been to The eatery you’re in for a truly visual feast.

however, no restaurant can sell itself on ambience alone. For us and we’re sure for our readers as well, paramount to a restaurant’s allure and success will ultimately stem from the food on offer. With that being said, The eatery is sure to surprise those more accustomed to the more traditional fare on offer at more commonplace Japanese restaurants littered around town. From imaginatively concocted treats such as their ‘tuna tempura’ and ‘fat elvis’ to their wacky take on sushi such as ‘devil’s Tail’ and ‘volcano’ sushi’s, The eatery promises to provide their clients with as much a flavorsome experience as a visual one. While decidedly more western in their approach to Japanese food, we encourage you not to let this sway your decision on whether to approach such an experience, especially if you’re open to providing your palette with tastes it won’t soon forget. even if you’re not looking to have a full dinner for the evening, The eatery’s diverse selection of tapas and alcohol shall ensure that there is something on offer to satisfy whatever your cravings are for the night.

46

Page 47: NISY WEBZINE ISSUE 02

From visual artifacts littered around the restaurant, mixing thematic notions of sex, pop culture and Japan to the tasty, arguably very western centric take on oriental cuisine, The eatery serves as yet another great example of the diversity of cultures and food on offer in our multicultural city. given its popularity however, we do recommend you either call ahead in advance or try to come early as it is often packed with people already in the know of the unique experience on offer!

ever wonder what life is like for those who bring you the hottest parties in town? WoRK + PlAyit is not a difficult job for me. it’s just that the attitude is different after i joined 9life. Before, i used to head down to clubs twice a week. drinking, dancing, being around girls, you know, like there was no tomorrow. Then suddenly it all changed. you gotta treat it more like a job now. you still have fun, but you can’t do crazy shit anymore. gotta be more responsible you know. Also, i don’t see people i work with in 9life as coworkers. They are more like friends to me. They are all very chilled people. We always hang out and drink and do all other stuff together.

vAnCouveRCompared to other big cities, night scene in vancouver is very versatile. There are all these different kinds of places for different people. For example, there is Fabric for the Asians, granville Street for the Caucasians, and Century house for a diverse mix; there are many to choose from. of course you can’t compare vancouver to parties in vegas or Asian cities but definitely vancouver is trying to match up with them.

AlCoholi am not a heavy drinker. i only drink when it is appropriate. i like drinking with friends. drinking alone is boring. in nightlife, drinks are very important. it has a heavy role in bonding with friends and meeting new people. i am sure everyone has made a few new friends from drinking. Personally i don’t like strong drinks. My favorite drink is cranberry with soho and vodka. it doesn’t have a name yet. hm… Maybe i should name it after me!

on TheiR MiSSionThe name envy is actually taken from another promotion company in hong Kong. They are really successful in creating and hosting parties and i saw how crazy hong Kong parties are, so i think i should bring that idea over to vancouver. That was back in 2007 and the Asian market in vancouver is ever-growing, so i thought it was a good time to start something new in vancouver, something fresh. And so the idea of theme parties, little stickers, iconic tees and all that just take off.

nighTliFeTo me nightlife is where entertainment begins. i love the night because it makes you lose the sense of time and enables you to fully indulge in whatever it is that you’re doing. during weekdays, nightlife means hanging out with close ones, watching games, playing games, and ocassionally drink a little. during weekends nightlife means half work, half partying, watching over the nightclubs for which my group runs the promotion, while interacting with the people whom i see every week. The trade off – clubbing had become more of a chore to me than a choice of entertainment.

giRlSi think girls put the word “life” into “nightlife”. it is okay for a place to be filled with only girls and whatever they do looks just fine, but if it’s the other way around all the time i’d rather join the army. That said, girls in the club should be treated with respect and they shouldn’t have to pay for their drinks, because they are the reason guys buy drinks.
