Balasore:IndiasfirstindigenouslydesignedanddevelopedlongrangesubsoniccruisemissileNirbhaywassuccessfullyflighttestedtodaythe17thOctober2014at1005hrsfromtheIntegratedTestRange(ITR),Balasore,Odisha.Theentiremission,fromliftofftillthefinalsplashdownwasaperfectflightachievingallthemissionobjectives.
ThecruisemissileNirbhay,poweredbyasolidrocketmotorboosterdevelopedbytheAdvancedSystemsLaboratory(ASL)tookoffmajesticallyfromamobilelauncherspecificallydesignedforNirbhaybytheVehiclesR&DEstablishment,VRDEBothbeingDRDOlaboratories.Asitachieveddesignatedaltitudeand
velocity,theboostermotorgotseparated,theturbofanengineautomaticallyswitchedontakingoverthefurtherpropulsionandthewingsopenedupbythecommandsgeneratedbytheonboardcomputer(OBC)stabilisingtheflight.GuidedbyahighlyadvancedinertialnavigationsystemindigenouslydevelopedbyResearchCentreImarat(RCI)theNirbhaycontinueditsflightthatlastedalittleover1hrand10minutes.Throughoutitspath,themissilewastrackedwiththehelpofgroundbasedradarsanditshealthparametersweremonitoredbyindigenoustelemetrystationsbyteamofprofessionalsfromDRDOsITRandLRDE(Electronics&RadarDevelopmentEstablishment).Additionally,theperformanceofNirbhaywascloselywatchedbyanIndianAirForceaircraft.

Themissilemaintainedanaccuracybetterthan10metersthroughoutitspathandcoveredadistanceofmorethan1000kminformedDrAvinashChanderspeakingafterthecompletionofthemission.ThesuccessfulindigenousdevelopmentofNirbhaycruisemissilewillfillavitalgapinthewarfightingcapabilitiesofourarmedforces.ContinedDrAvinashChander.
The1000kilometerclasscruisemissilewithcapabilitytostrikedeepintotheenemyterritory,hasbeendesignedanddevelopedbytheDefenceResearchandDevelopmentOrganisation,DRDO,IndiaspremierDefenceR&DorganisationatitsaeronauticsR&DlaboratoryADE(AeronauticalDevelopmentEstablishment)basedinBengaluru,Karnataka.ThemissileisyetanothergiantstepforwardinIndiastechnologicalcapabilitiesfordesigndevelopmentandleadingtoproductionstateoftheartweaponsplatformsandequipmentforcountrysArmedForces.

ThiswasthesecondlaunchofNirbhaycruisemissile.Themaidenlaunchlastyearon12thMarch2013waspartialsuccessachievingmostofthemissionobjectives.Themaidenflighthadtobeterminatedforsafetyreasonsduetomalfunctionofacomponent,afterdeviationfromintendedpathwasobserved.
Earlier,thelaunchpreparationsandplanswereauthorisedafterthoroughreviewbyexpertsledbyDrAvinashChander,underwhoseguidancethelaunchprocesswasexecuted.
P.SrikumarDirectorADE,asthemissiondirectorledthelaunchoperations.ThelaunchpreparationswereplannedandsupervisedbyVasanthSastriProjectDirectorNirbhayproject.
ThelaunchwaswitnessedbyDrKTamilmani,DS&DGAeronauticalsystems,DrVGSekranDS&DGMissilesandstrategicsystems,ViceAdmiralDineshPrabhakar(retd.)AVSM,NSM,VSM.DGATVP,DrSatishReddy,DSandDirectorRCI,DrTessyThomas,OSandDirectorASL,ShriMVKVPrasadOSandDirectorITRandseniorDRDOscientists.
