Record awards posting forNorth Central Division NHRALucas Oil Drag Racing Series
The North Central Division will kick off its six-race 2003NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Route 66 Racewayin Joliet, Ill., April 25-27 with the largest cash and contin-gency awards posting ever at stake. A record $1,270,470 incash purses, qualifying bonuses, contingency awards, andpoints funds will be up for grabs. Each of the six individual2003 North Central Division events will offer a $60,000cash purse, $107,445 in contingency product postings, and$3,500 in Sealed Power Low Qualifier bonuses. In addition,North Central Division racers will be shooting for theirshare of the $561,000 in the Lucas Oil Products nationaland divisional points fund, as well as participation in the$100,000 NHRA Jeg’s Allstars event.
The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series will again airon ESPN2. Sixteen shows will be broadcast from selectednational events, and Sportsman Spotlights will focus on theSportsman racing community during NHRA 2Day, whichairs Sundays at 11 a.m. ET on ESPN2 through Nov. 16.

Division 3 racerBurghard dies
Veteran Division 3 Super Gas racer PhilBurghard of Worthington, Ohio, died from injuriessuffered in an accident during Saturday’s timetrials for the NHRA Spring Sportsman ChallengeXI at Gateway Int’l Raceway.
Burghard, 33, was driving his 2003 Corvettethat had just made a second time-trial attemptof 9.873 seconds at 155.67 mph before the carwent out of control at the end of the racetrackand crashed. Track officials said the carcrashed at full speed in the sand traps at theend of the shutdown area.
Burghard was transported by air to St. LouisUniversity Hospital Trauma Center where hedied. A hospital official said an autopsy wouldbe performed to determine the exact cause ofdeath.
Burghard finished 15th in the 2002 NHRADivision 3 points standings in Super Gas.

NHRA Spring Sportsman Challenge XI reset for July 5The NHRA Spring Sportsman Challenge XI at Gateway Int’l Raceway in
Madison has been rescheduled for Saturday, July 5, after being rained out April6. The Super Stock-Stock combo, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, E.T.Bracket, and Jr. Dragster fields will be open to new entries.
Don Hurst was right on the 4.500 qualifying limit with his blown, small-block Chevy-powered dragster to become the quickest qualifier inopen-wheeled action in the NHRA Jeg’s Super Quick Series, and Rick Cornled the bodied-car contingent with a 4.619 from his ’02 Dodge Avenger. Sev-enty-six entries attempted to qualify for the first expanded 64-car field in the15 years of the series. With qualifying completed, the Jeg’s Super Quick fieldis set, and no new entries will be accepted.
Jeff Stealy led the Super Stock-Stock combo field in qualifying with hisH/SA ’86 Camaro at 11.180, 1.270 under his 12.45 index. Tom Rhoda ofBrookfield, Wis., reset national records in A/FIA at 10.21, 132.62.
In Saturday’s Gateway bracket racing program, J.R. Lobner of Desoto,Kan., took the Super Pro win over Phillip Oakley of Owensboro, Ky. RickThomas, in his ’70 Monte Carlo, captured the Pro bracket win over a red-lighting Mark Verberck in his ’64 Fairlane. Brad Bouckaert defeated Pat Tafffor the Street E.T. win, and Kristen Deterding won the Jr. Dragster eliminatorover Hayden Bailey.
NHRA SportsNational Open set for May 24-25The 17th annual NHRA SportsNational Open at Beech Bend Raceway
Park in Kentucky May 24-25 will offer a cross section of Sportsman dragracing at one of the country’s premier Sportsman facilities. The event willfeature class and eliminator racing in Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp,Super Gas, Super Street, the NHRA Jeg’s Super Quick Series, E.T.brackets, Jr. drag racing, and the new NHRA Top Sportsman competitionin a special non-points race.
National record runs will be made Saturday for Super Stock and Stockentries. The event is a grading event toward national event entries. Seethe event advertisement in this newsletter for more information.

A feature from Wabash Valley Dragway in Terre Haute,Ind., will be taped Saturday, May 10, and air July 6. NHRAand ESPN announcer Bob Frey will tape a segment fromPacemakers Dragway Park in Mount Vernon, Ohio, Sat-urday, June 14, that will air Aug. 10.
Pacemakers’ season is expected to be under way in thecoming weeks after the rebuilding of its timing tower, whichburned to the ground following an apparent lightning strikeearlier this spring.

RFC summer program for kidsRacers For Christ has big plans for youngsters this summer. RFC’s version ofvacation Bible school will roll out to the track at Division 3 NHRA Lucas Oil DragRacing Series events at Indianapolis Raceway Park, Mid-Michigan Motorplex, andEdgewater Sports Park. Kids ages 3-12 are invited to Steer Straight for Jesus,which will include activities and storytelling from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
