No Worries, Cary...

You Know Who Loves Ya’

If it wasn’t for all the dead folk here in NC, thismight be humorous. Oh yeah.....you heard me, DEADpeople here in North Carolina.

It’ s universally accepted that the vast majority ofour elected officials are corrupt, egocentric, and thenthere’s the viral joke going ‘round in email about a listof purely stupid episodes involving our illustriousofficials. There is a certain amount of graft (of all sorts)that is to be expected but when greed/avarice/hubrismix to a toxic level that actually endangers people’shealth and lives, as well as animals, crops, the WATER,our quality of life, our entire future, then that’s wheresane minds enter the room to save the day.

Cary introduced key legislation designed to actuallywork with logical earth science principles, commonsense and do a helluva’ lot better job at conservingwhat precious water we have left.

And for every single person out there, think aboutthe ‘ethics’ of each case - Cary, just being himself orthe Environmental & Natural Resources Committestonewalling WFS and EIC members, trying to killour bills.

Coastal North Carolina,Then and Now Part 2...Now

After childhood, I wasn’t to visit the coast againfor a while. My sisters married and I discoveredgirls, played high school sports and sang in thechurch choir. Next was college and military duty.On occasion, during the 1960’s, I did return for aday or two at a time. Not much had changed. Themarshes were still barren, the sand dunes stillstanding guard and the waters pure. Only a fewmodest summer cabins were visible on themainland and not many on the outer isles.

During the 1970’s while living aboard myhouseboat near the nation’s capital, I began tonotice an alarming increase in trash on the PotomacRiver. Blue Plains treatment plant was caughtdumping raw sewage a number of times and theriver was closed to swimming. Yet our all knowingCongress made boaters spend thousands of dollarsfor special heads (Navy talk for toilets) and holdingtanks and forced marinas to install pump outstations. That was my first exposure to ‘feel good’legislation. Congress and the EPA could smile forthe cameras. In the mean time, nightly activities atthe local sewerage plant continued as usual.

I raced small and large sailboats on theChesapeake Bay. Skipjacks under sail, manually“tonged” for oysters and small white work boats, built on Tangier Island, set and pulled crab pots.Maryland is known for its back fin crabs. Increasedpollution from farm runoff down the SusquehannaRiver, local development, storm water drainageand failed septic systems eventually made the

water look like diluted tomato soup, known as redtide. For the safety of everyone, the State closedmost of the Bay to shellfish harvesting, and spentmillions on cleanup. Without knowing it, I waswitnessing a foreshadowing of things to come, closer to heart.

In 1980, I helped a friend deliver a trawler fromVirginia to Florida. Passing through NorthCarolina, I got reacquainted with my old fishinggrounds. There were a few more houses, stillmodest in size. The marshlands remained as Iremembered and the water was clean and salty.By this time, almost all of the old swing bridgeshad been removed. Some were replaced withstationary high rise structures. Functional, but notvery romantic. A few of the draw bridges wereplaced in a perpetual yawn, awaiting a call toservice, just in case.

The following year, we brought the same trawlerback through NC, on the way to Marblehead, MA.High winds held us at anchor in Alligator Bay,awaiting crossing of the Albemarle Sound. Wehadn’t kept up with the news, so neither of us knewof the forest fire directly to our West. For two days,we watched the smoldering forest and chokeddown the acrid smoke. That year, 145,000 acresof prime pine forest and peat moss burned formonths. It made me sad. Years later, in 2007, thatsame area would be ablaze again, this time sending

its plum of smoke as far west as Alamance County, some 200 miles distant. Something was amiss.

My career kept me busy for two more decades. For vacations, I hiked the Appalachian Trail orcamped on the Outer Banks, so I didn’t see whatwas happening elsewhere on much of our coast. When I returned to my home territory, I washorrified at what I saw. High rise concrete giantsstood where two story motels used to sheltersummer visitors. Pill box houses standing on stilts, were perched atop the dunes no longer, and nolonger protected by law or the reverence once socommon. On Ocean Isle, houses built far too closeto the ocean were now awash. Tax payer fundedjetties and oversized sand bags had failed to haltthe ocean’s march. The waves that once washedaway my childhood footprints would soon swallowup larger ones of a different kind. What were lonelybeaches were now playgrounds.

The conditions on the ICW were no better.McMansions, bigger than I have ever lived in orcared to, lined the canal and its tributaries. Piersstretched 700-1,000 feet across marsh grass, snuffing out every living thing in their path. Golfcourses replaced forests that once were home to ahost of animals and whose roots held the soil firmlyagainst both normal and storm tides. Nitrogen runoff from over fertilized fairways and hostilebacteria from failed septic systems put in too closeto the water table, leached poisons into CarteretCounty waters. Harvesting of any shell fish there

is closed indefinitely. Calabash restaurants mustnow truck in fish once plucked from local waters.

Delivery captains, eager to reach Florida in thefall and northern states in spring, drive forty footsports fishing boats, like cowboys at a round up.Personal watercraft race about with recklessabandon. Overloaded pontoon boats ferryweekenders to the inlets for beach parties and skiboats pull anything that’s fun. The resulting furyeats away at the marsh lands and silts in the canal, requiring frequent removal of clay and sand. As achild, I saw only one dredge, and that was atBeaufort inlet, a busy seaport at Morehead City.In the last decade, I have not been to the coastwithout seeing at least one at work. Once a lazytrade route and part of our national defense, theICW had become an amusement park. I washeartbroken. After 60 some years of loyal service, the lone pontoon bridge at Sunset Beach will bereplaced. The new bridge is under constructionand will replace the old one. The last relic of anera gone by will be laid to rest and with it, the lastof my childhood wilderness.

How did all this happen? Not by my father’shand, nor mine. A nation changed, and its peoplewith it. Too many people nowadays want what theywant, regardless of its impact on our environmentor to others. No slowing down for folks in strawhats, fishing from an old wooden boat. With apopulation eager to buy, a sprouting tourist trade, willing marine contractors, a real estate industryall too eager to profit from development and ourlegislators in their pockets, it is little wonder howwe’ve gotten where we are.

All things considered, where else could we be?

of our loyal readers spit their coffee, sweet icedtea or beer everywhere after seeing our newest littlegame we’re starting.

We’ve mentioned in previous articles about howconfusing the whole environmental corruptionnetwork really is, so we’ve opted to start puttingit into graphic representations that the commonfolk can grasp.

Thus, the unveiling of our veryown Raleighwood Squares. Thisis the very first of many squaresshowing vast networks of deepcorruption.

Dale suggests to print it out aslarge as you can, pin up onto acork board and play darts. Andthen in the coming weeks, just addto the target paper with the nextsquares.

Note that this is very similar toour Ponzi scheme pyramidschematic and that there is awhole lot of overlap in players.

So much taxpayer money hasbeen spent wasted, misused, abused.

And oh yes, there are still thosedead bodies over all the decadesfrom water contamination, manyof them our very own military andtheir families.

SLUDGE Again AProblem In Raleigh CreekPosted: Aug 26, 2006

RALEIGH, N.C. — The water flowing down acreek from a Raleigh water treatment plant is onceagain carrying a strange, colorful sludge. The problemis not new, and neighbors are tired of empty promisesto stop it.

The North Raleigh creek has a colorful, troubledhistory. In 2002, state water quality inspectors lookedfor the source of a strange black sludge. They foundno aquatic life, and they said that they suspected thatchlorine discharged into the water killed everything.

Last January, bright green and white slime coatedthe creek. Biologists determined it was sulphur bacte-ria, which looks strange but is harmless.

Now, the latest abnormality has arrived -- a grayishyellow foam collecting in the water and sticking torocks.

Late Friday, Wake County officials released datathat shows there are high levels of E. coli bacteria inthe creek's sediment. The report doesn't pinpoint thesource of the bacteria, which can cause serious illnessin humans who become infected with it.

"The concern is: one, it's an ongoing problem. Then, what are the implications for our community?" saidneighbor Ron Gregory.

Sheffield Manor neighbors like Gregory are frus-trated. After the last problems with the creek, the Ra-leigh City Council committed more than $3 millionsso the EM Johnson Water Plant could purchase newpumps and stop discharging into the creek.

This time, the slime is different and less extensive.According to e-mails obtained by WRAL, state inspec-tors said they believe it's some sort of biofilm that cancollect around drains or sinks.

Neighbors are worried about the long-term effectsto their wells and Falls Lake. The creek feeds intoRaleigh's primary drinking water source. Research thatthey accumulated shows high concentrations of man-ganese and iron. Dangerous or not, they argue, it's justnot right.

"We knew for a fact that it's 95 times the level thatwould naturally occur. That creates a concern," saidGregory.

Raleigh's Public Works Director Dale Crisp said thetreatment plant is in a tough position. State regula-tions limit how much water it can recycle, so the plantmust continue to discharge until capital improvementsare completed.

Crisp's staff is conducting tests. As for the E. colidiscovery, Crisp said he sees no logical connection tothe plant.

NC’s Gordian Knot is

Slowly UnravelingWe find it interesting that now the mainstream media

has to report on the FBI probe into the activities ourgreat state’s ex-guv and some of his buddies have beenup to. It’s almost expected that the ‘quid pro quo tit fortat so you do this and I’ll do that’ way of doing politicsand business goes on. Can’t go anywhere in the worldto escape this necessary practice in order to get anythingdone. But at least the crimes that are being exposed nowhave not cost someone their health or life.

Some of what’s comin’ out of the dirty laundryhamper and being aired is directly attributed to researchand discovery done by Dale and members of the EIC afew years ago. Since Dale was a developer, he wasable to chainsaw through the ugly Gordian knot thatthe corrupt power brokers constructed. The schemeswere so confusing by design that whenever Dale startsto launch into a very lengthy explanation, the listener’s

eyes glaze overin no time at all.

As MarkValentine says,‘in order to wrapyour headaround Dale’sexplanation, youhave to takesome kind ofmind expandingdrug.’

But becauseof the intricacies of the NC Gordian knot, no one has

Alexander cuts the Gordian Knot,by Jean-Simon Berthélemy (1743–1811)

Yeah, the implosions and explosions centering in downtownRaleigh are cool to watch. But we’ll get our drink & popcornready to watch the big explosion yet to come.....underwater.

really ever been able to get very far in unraveling thelong tentacles of the corrupt regime.

Not until Dale, at least. Some have come close butthe Redneck Environmentalist has gone where no onehas gone before with research and discovery.

And what truly astounded him was that there werequite a few people who obviously lack a conscienceand do not think twice about benefiting at the expenseof their constituents’ health and well-being. Evensadder to think that there were even more people outthere who either participated in cover-ups of the truthor just chose to turn a blind eye.

Is there no morality left in our society?!Well, at least the media are now doing their jobs,

even if it is simply because they have to in light of thefederal investigations in our state.

So, here’s the deal....WFS, EIC and R. HoraceSwiggett Institute of Environmental Politics therebythrows down the BS flag to the other journalists andmedia out there.

The challenge is to adopt our groups’ motto...

“It doesn’t matter who you are, what your goodname is, who your mama or daddy might be, or whatyour party line is. If you’re doing wrong, we’re callin’you up on the table.”

When asked, a lot of folks say that the most corruptstate in our nation is either Illinois or Louisanna. Butwe beg to differ.

It’s one thing for a sitting governor to try and auctionoff a vacant Senate seat. But it don’thold a candle to a state thatknowingly poisons their owncitizens.

You can't legislate morality.

- Jesse Ventura, ex-guv of Minnesota13

Memorial Day: What Does

It Mean To You?For most people it is a paid holiday, a shopping

day, a day traveling or in the backyard having acook out.

Very few people know, think or remember whatMemorial Day really means. It is that thousandsupon thousands of men and women, both in andout of uniform have died so that the average pub-lic can cook their hamburgers, drive their cars andvote in freedom.

Few people even think of the ultimate sacrificethat these heroes doing their duty have paid.

We need to think about this ultimate sacrificeof duty, honor and country.

Thank You to all who have servedand continue to serve our country.

Where Man & The Reptile

Kingdom MeetWell, we ran a small info piece last week re-

garding ticks because if just seems that there’s beenan explosion of ‘emthis spring.

Dale went out tosomeone’s farm todo some photogra-phy by a small pond. While walking earlyin the morning, theRedneck Environ-mentalist encoun-tered two snakes onthe foot path througha garden. He quickly snapped a few quick shotsand then proceeded to set up for the real photoshoot.

And then he got to thinkin’. Was that one hecouldn’t make out too well in the underbrush aCopperhead? The other was a harmless 7 foot longblack snake that looked fat and happy given allthe field mice on the farm.

So, here’s a quick Redmeck Snake 101 cliffnotes for the upcoming summer. We consulted oneof our WFS staffers who has a whole lot of expe-rience with all kinds of reptiles.

Know your local snakes. Most are non venom-ous. Don't jump or step over logs, rocks, or plantmaterial, walk around these obstacles. Be careful

in the outdoorswhen turningover logs, rocks,or other large ob-jects, a snake maybe laying under-neath resting orlooking for food.

When hiking, watch where you step, stay on pathsor in clearings if possible. Avoid tall grassy areaswith heavy underbrush. DO NOT putyour hands or feet into places where youcannot see. Look closely at the groundbefore crossing over or under fences.

If you come across a snake, maintain asafe distance. Stay at least a body lengthaway from the snake. A snake can nor-mally strike 1/2 their body length, but thiscould be further if they are facing down-hill. Snakes normally aren't aggressive, but be prepared to retreat if a snake comestoward you, it may only be seeking es-cape cover.

Wear suitable clothing and footwearwhen outdoors. Leather boots provide

adequate protection for the feet and ankles; lowcut shoes or sandals should not be worn in rattle-snake country, especially at night. Rattlesnakes

fangs can penetrate through clothing,loose-fitting is better than close bindingstyles.

If someone is bitten by a venomoussnake, try to remain calm, treat for shock, and seek medical attention immediately.Reduce physical activity and exertion asmuch as practical. Excitement and shockallow the hemotoxic venom of a rattle-snake to spread faster through the circu-latory/lymphatic systems of the victimsbody. Time is critical with any snakebite, the victim should seek medical help assoon as possible. A person will normally

know how serious the bite will be within the first30 minutes. The location of the bite and theamount of venom injected are the main factorsaffecting the seriousness of the bite. In most cases, the bite area will swell up, turn black and blue

The best advice of what you will need for snake-bite is a set of keys and a vehicle for transporta-tion to a medical facility. The use of ice, stun guns,or tourniquets for snakebite ARE NOT recom-mended. Do not take any pills containing aspirinor ibuprofen and don't drink any alcohol, sincethese will thin the blood and may cause furthercomplications. Advanced notice to the hospital orclinic, would also be helpful for their preparationfor the incoming patient.

Most health-care professionals recommend justa few basic first-aid techniques for any snakebite.According to the American Red Cross, the fol-lowing steps should be taken:

t Wash the bitten area with soap and water.t Immobilize the bitten area and keep it lower

than the heart.t Get medical help and don't delay.

The History of Traveling

by Land to WaterHow do motorcycles fit in to the Waterfront

Sportsman Missions of the environment, preservation, and quality of life?

Throughout history man has strived to improvehis quality of life by addressing the challenges ofthe environment and interactions of follow man.All religions have a basis of respect for nature’sgifts and balancing wants and needs. As historianstrace our own beginnings, distinct periods ofchange were defined by benchmarks in culture andgreat changes in the environment both positive andnegative.

As man realized his limitations of travel by foot,he began to travel by water and harness beast ofburden. The capturing of a broad variety beast hasnow evolved into a number of hoofed anddomesticated animals. Waterfront Sportsman nowrecognizes, along with our families, many animalsas Our Loved Ones.

With the Earth covered 80% by water, watertravel is the ultimate connector of people, goodand services. All other forms of travel are tooconnect water.

Many centuries later, the vision of mechanicaltravel began with the wheel. As decades past, manysimple machines were created based around theleverage created by a circle. As the basic rules ofphysics were documented, and as theories focusedon work and the movement of mass. Manycomplex machines began to take shape. Movingof people, goods and services were alwaysparamount. Wagons of a broad variety were

harnessed to, and merged the strength of beast ofburdens with the early complex machines.

Still man’s vision grew to bigger and better. Thebicycle was born as a major benchmark of purposeand efficiency. As the internal combustion enginebecame more manageable the vision of a motorizedbicycle was on the horizon.

As the sunlight broke through a small shop inGermany in 1885 where Wilhelm Maybach andGottlieb Daimler are created with the 1st motorcycle, In 1910 Indian Motorcycles was createdwith the 1st V-Tee Cylinder.

While most people only think Harley Davidsonowns the motorcycle road, more motorcycles arebuilt in China than any other country and theremore motorcycles other than Harley Registered inthe US inspite of the Harley Davidson’s Spin onMotorcycle History and Marketing.

WFS Eye on Governmentfrom the Raleigh Report

Black Needs Some Company cont. next pg

When a pack of out-of-control dogs terrorizesa neighborhood, getting animal control to removethe runt of the pack won’t solve the problem. Sowhy would anyone interested in cleaning up thecorruption in Raleigh focus on Jim Black?

Anyone who looks at how funds are allocatedknows he’s the “runt of the pack” and his regionhas suffered because of his “service” in Raleigh.

Before I continue, let me make it clear that I amnot a supporter of Mr. Black. I was one of twoRepublicans who refused to vote for Jim Blackthe first time he was elected Speaker. (I then movedto the Senate where, to the consternation of mostSenate Republicans, I also refused to vote for MarcBasnight. Worse yet, from the viewpoint of somestate Republican Party leaders, I even challengedMike Easley. Wow, can’t risk offending the Hunt-Easley team.)

No one familiar with my record could confuseme with a member of Mr. Black’s team or any ofthe other teams, Democrat or Republican, that existto perpetuate pork barrel politics.

How strange that so many people who claim tooppose corruption onlyseem concerned with aselect few of Mr. Black’sactions. He is the smallestpart of the leadershipproblem and the actionsthey cite are some of histruly minor transgressions. The press hashyperventilated about ahandful of improperlyhandled campaign contributions to the point ofboredom. Why? Why the focus on Jim Black’s

In Defense of Jim Black,

Don’t Let Him Leave Alone

minor misdeeds to the exclusion of much biggerscandals?

Well, there you have the answer. The purposeis to divert attention from the bigger scandals. Asa general rule, the press praises people like Blackand ignores their transgressions or minimizes theirsignificance. The long running attack on Blackseems so out of character that there has to be moreto the story than meets the eye, and I think I’vestumbled upon the story behind the story.

On March 26, 2006, Jack Betts had a columnin The Charlotte Observer titled “Black InfoAlmost Didn’t Get to Public” in which he creditsLarry Leake, chairman of the State Board ofElections, with lighting the fuse that led to theBlack/Decker story. In case you’ve missed earlierstories about Mr. Leake in the North CarolinaConservative, let me simply state that he is apolitical operative of the first order and wasappointed to his position by the Governor.

When Larry Leake goes after Jim Black, it isvery much like the Governor going after Jim Black.

One gets the impression that all of the top dogsin the Democrat Party are enjoying Mr. Black’sdiscomfiture and that they want to keep himtwisting in the wind as long as possible. The recentDemocrat caucus in which they decided to keephim around for the next session gives credence tomy take on the situation.

If Mike Easley (and Jim Hunt) and MarcBasnight (and Tony Rand) were really upset byJim Black’s improprieties, they would be pushinghim out. Instead, they’re weakly supporting him. Why? Two reasons.

First, Black makes a great decoy. As long asthe press is talking about Black, they aren’t talkingabout the

Northeast Partnership or the unexplained deathof the Currituck ferry whistleblower. People aren’ttalking about the misallocation of highway fundsor non-profit grants or any of a number of other

misdeeds that would implicate a lot more peoplewhen they’re talking about contributions to Black.

Second, the weaker Black is in the shortsession, the more power the Senate and theGovernor can exert in shaping legislation. HouseDemocrats are afraid to dump Black becausethey’re counting on him for campaign funds, butBlack is the next best thing to a lame duck Speaker.

Of course, it is possible that the big boys havemiscalculated on the second point. Black is a verysharp political operator and he knows that the pressattacks have to be the work of his so-calledDemocrat friends. What if, in the short session,he actually worked on behalf of the state insteadof shipping all of the money to a few Democratstrongholds?

The possibilities for revenge are sweet. What if Black highlighted the inequity of the

so-called equity formula for distributing highwayfunds? That would be a sure way to let the bigdogs know he didn’t appreciate the press attack. What if he said there would be no clean water bondbased on the Bill Lee tier system. He knows thatthe tiers denied Mecklenburg, his home county, adime of funding from the last bond and resultedin his region only getting $50 million for water

Fern Shubert served three times as amember of the NC House, was SenateRepublican Whip (2003-2004), and ran forgovernor afterwards. projects out of the last $800 million ($1 billion ifyou include the natural gas fiasco) bond.

What if Jim Black, knowing he wasn’t going tobe around much longer, actually embraced seriousethics reforms? But that’s dreaming. Black knowsthat if he leaves, the people who set the press onhim will still be in power. And that is the problem.

If Jim Black leaves alone, nothing will change.Black needs to take a lot more of the insiders withhim when he goes. Don’t let him leave alone.

How ironic that WFS stafferswould come across a larger-than-life game of chess by the water. We just couldn’t help ourselves. The royalty pair on the left arerunning for cover and there aredead pawns trailing down to the

waterline on the right.Kind of describes our normal day.

Boycott on EateriesWhy did Waterfront Sportsman call for an

International Boycott of Hardee’s, TexasSteakhouse, and Moe’s Restaurant Chains?

Boddie Noel Chairman of the Board MayoBoddie also claims he owns the Arlington Placedevelopment in Pamlico County on his bio for theNC State Ethic’s Commission.

Boddie permitted to injectreuse wastewater into theCastle Hayne Aquifer, that isthe drinking and bathing watersource for Camp Lejeune, Cherry Point and 30million people on the east coast with total disregardto risk of systemic salmonella contamination frommunicipal reuse water being used to irrigate lettucetomato’s, peppers, peanuts, and bean sprouts, allare primary ingredients in the Hardee’s, Texas, andMoe’s Chain Restaurants.

Boddie, who was appointed by ex-Gov. Huntto the NC Ethic’s Commission to keep the lid onall the environmental, and developmental

corruption in Pamlico Countywas so confident about reusewater from the wastewater plantbeing approved, Boddie hasbeen illegally marketing

building lots without any disclosure of wasterwater operational limitations or the need for theNC General Assembly to pass HB 643 allowing.

The marketing of building lots requires allpermits to be complete, who approved theArlington Place Subdivision and when? If notapproved, is political clout being used to cover upthe illegal marketing?

WFS is committed to the Public’s Right toKnow of Health Risks and exposing all shortcomings and unethical absence of controls toprotect the public from unsafe water and food byfood growers, distributors, grocery stores, andrestaurants.

WFS is calling on all motorcycle riders to ridetheir bikes to work every Friday to bring awarenessto unsafe water and food.

Eating Food That’s Not

ContaminatedAll of us at WFS and the EIC all agree that one of

the biggest looming crisis mankind faces is theassurance of food that is safe for consumption. It’salways been a given that contamination can happen inthe process of harvesting a crop and the path all theway to the dinner table. But now we now have to gobeyond that and look at the crop growing in the ground, getting water for nourishment.

So, Don Yelton and Dale came up with the ‘goodseal of WFS approval’ that labels food grown in sludge-free fields and not being nourished with reuse water. We could never figure out the sense behind food beinglabeled ‘organic’ and sold at higher prices if sludgewas used for fertilizer or the crop was irrigated withreuse water.

A lot of people have pointed out the obviousproblem - that retailers and restaurants right down tothe farmers, and everyone in between, will protestloudly because it is a huge, seemingly impossible taskto change how we produce our food stocks.

It’ s always been about the bottom line according tothe bean counters of the supply chain. But in the longrun, it could prove much more cost effective to changein this respect in lieu of the long term cost associatedwith increased insurance and medical cost out ofcontrol. Waterfront Sportsman Challenges Food and Restaurant Industry to Address Sludge

and Reuse Water Contamination of Our Food Stocks

Don Yelton and Dale Swiggett, editor/publisher of Waterfront Sportsman, announce a new standard for food

quality that will assure consumers that the food bought at restaurants and grocery stores is safe for consumption

and not grown in environments contaminated by the spreading of

municipal sludge or watered with reuse water from municipal sewage

treatment plants.

Over the last few years, outbreaks of salmonella have plagued the

United States. The confirmation of systematic fiber contamination

indicate that contaminants were germinated and not surface contami-

nation.

A movement to calm con-

sumer fears was labeled

organic. The organic label was

abused and compromised by

sludge spreading and irriga-

tion from municipal waste

water plants. The organic

label is unreliable and un-

qualified to address prion

concerns that is most notable

in Mad Cow disease (a prion

is an infectious agent that is

composed of protein). The risks of pharmaceutical drugs, medical and

industrial waste are compounded with every untested shipment of mu-

nicipal sludge and reuse water. For the above reasons and to protect

public health and restore confidence, new gold standards have been

established by R. Horace Swiggett Institute of Environmental Politics.

The House in NC in the

Village on The Tar

Edwin Wiley Fuller House...Part 1

June Barbour commissioned an artist to render the house on personal stationery.

A drunkard in a distant town lay dying on

his bed,

There was lack of woman’s gentle touch

about his fevered head,

But a comrade stood beside him, and

wiped the foam away,

That bubbled through his frothy lips, to

hear what he might say,

The poor inebriate faltered, as he caught

that comrade’s eye,

And he said, “Tis hard, far, far from home

‘mid strangers thus to die.

Take a message and a token to my friends

away so far,

For Louisburg’s my native place, the village

on The Tar.”

- taken from “The Village on The Tar”

by Edwin Wiley Fuller

My family and I must have seen the old housein the Village on The Tar in North Carolina forthe first time from the approximate location as asquad of Yankee soldiers viewed the manor in1865. According to an old diary written by theowner, Anna Fuller Long, on April 29, “A squadof Yankee Calvary came to town and topped infront of our house. They came to tell of theapproach of the (Northern) Army.”

The house at that time must have been a lovelysight, probably white with green or black shuttersas most of the old houses on North Main Streetwere and still are. It is old and new Louisburg,NC, called by Edwin Wiley Fuller, the poet andauthor who was born in the house in 1847 – “TheVillage on The Tar.” And from his writings, onecan see little change in the town for over 100 years. This is true despite being only 28 miles fromRaleigh and the aggressive Research TriangleArea. The only impressive statue in town isdedicated to the Civil War dead.

It was a lovely Indian summer day in Octoberwhen my husband, Henry Barbour, daughter Elize, and our two Cairn terriers Red Baron and Misty, and myself were driving through Louisburg forthe first time. We exclaimed on the peacefulness, the lovely old homes and glowing maples on NorthMain Street. The homes were still neatly paintedand had lovely well kept lawns and flower beds. The wide, typically Southern front porches hadwicker chairs and chaise lounges placedcomfortably about them. And then we came upona most dejected, spooky, old square house framedby falling shutters, a broken chimney and tallweeds. It was sitting far back from the street in ashroud of gloom, even though it was a bright day.

We commented that thishouse needed a friend andhow we would like torestore it.

For years, we had been looking for an old houseto restore, a quality house, but in our McLeansection of Virginia and the surroundingcountryside, this was a dream few people couldrealize. The house was in the process of beingdemolished; the front steps already gone. From alocal realtor, we found the house was for sale. Withno prior intention of moving to NC, we decidedto look inside the house. Our first difficulty lay indriving down to the house as there was no visibledriveway. As there were no front steps, we had toscale a five foot porch wall to enter the house. The old screens were mostly ripped off the doubledoors and the doors were hanging open, showingyears of intrusion and vandalism. Once inside, however, through all the dirt, grime and buildingmaterials left over from an abortive attempt torestore the old section of the house, one could seelovely stair cases, double steady ones, what oncehad been solid plaster walls, thirteen foot ceilings, wide windows with beautiful wood detailing, pegged doors and wide pine floors. Walking upthe solid front staircase, we brushed away spiderwebs and avoided dozens of wasp nests longenough to see four sturdy square rooms ofapproximately 20’ x 20’, hand painted wallpaperin two rooms, and two new baths that had beeninstalled. It was not until we moved in that wenoticed most of the window panes were broken, one window was completely out and boarded overand none of the windows would close. This wenoticed on a cold day in January.

We loved the house immediately. The thoughtof restoring an old house excited me so much thatafter a few days all agreed to submit an offer. Weknew what an undertaking it would be but werereally not prepared for the future frustrations. Ouroffer was accepted, we put our McLean home, which was lovely, up for sale and prepared to bepioneers. In three months our family moved toLouisburg.

It was cold and wet that January night and ourfamily, which also included two cats and goldfish, arrived shortly ahead of the movers. Confidentlywe unlocked the back door (still no front steps).Arrangements had been made several weeks earlierto have the old section replastered and all majorrepairs made. Upon entering the new section ofthe house, which contained a beautiful large

c u s t o mm a d ek i t c h e nand threebaths, wew e r eastonishedto see rowsof plasterstacked inthe hallsa n dscaffolding about. Only one day of work had beendone to the house. We were horrified as few motelswill keep all those animals. They did that night.

The next night our family stayed in the old houseand we all (animals, too) slept in what was ourdaughter’s bedroom. It was uncomfortable, dirtyand cold but we felt the old house was smiling atus. It seemed to be glad to see a family again.

Instead of being frightened by broken doorlocks and open windows, we felt comfortable. Myhusband and I were so excited by the house thatwe walked through the rooms most of the night, lovingly examining the fine Italian marble mantlesin two rooms, old slate hearths, the graciousstaircase. It was our house and a real challenge.

One of the many fireplacesthat featured a coal insert.

Page 35: Waterfront Sportsman 5.3.2009

The following day we took stock. From thebeginning, the new kitchen saved our sanity. Wehad only regular moving problems with that, suchas washer, dryer connections, a broken disposaland cabinet lights that didn’t work.

But In the Old Section….In what was our family room, the entire ceiling

was down, floors buckled, fireplace bricks out inthe middle of the room and two feet of rubble onthe floor. It was dangerous to walk into. Theelectric plugs were shorting out all over the housebecause of water leaks. The new heating systemwas working well, thankfully and holding its ownwith open windows. There was plaster dusteverywhere and every room needed some repair. All of the eight fireplaces needed rebuilding oropening. Our furniture was stacked against thewalls.

When we first bought the house, we could notunderstand why no one in town had bought it. Itcertainly could not be built today at any price. Ithad been a lovely home of a beloved family whohad been there since the middle 18th century. Whatwe called our ‘smoke house,’ and was in turn anoffice, smokehouse and kitchen is reported to havebeen built in 1772. This house was rebuilt in 1856but earlier portions go back to the 18th century.Mrs. Anna Long Fuller writes in her diary onAugust 11, 1856, “in the afternoon the old hickorythat stood by the parlor chimney was felled to theground. It had the best nuts I ever ate, and with itare appreciated many places and remembrancesof my childhood.”

There is a plaque on the main highway notingthat this house was the home of Edwin WileyFuller. It was his father, Jones Fuller and Dr.Malone, the father of his future wife, whojourneyed to Raleigh to meet with Sherman andsurrender Louisburg so that the imminent Northernarmy would not sack and burn the town. Yankeeofficers were not only entertained but quarteredin the house. You might way this house held thehistory of the town, yet it was vacant for six years. Why?

Well, we found out the hard way. No one wantedto work on old houses, the dimensions of the wallsweren’t exact like new houses, it took longer torepair a few rooms than build a small house. Wewere looked on as eccentric by a lot of people fortaking on restoration of approximately 5,000

square feet of old houseand decorating andfinishing about 1,600square feet of newsection.

There was so much todo and no one to do it.Carpenters worked abouta week, repairing all thewindows and replacing a

few of them. I insisted on keeping the old windowpanes where possible, so this added doubly timewise as the old glass had to be cut out of rottedwindows found on the property. Some of thebroken panes were not replaced as I preferredcracked panes to new window glass. I had beenresearching old homes and construction too longto let our gem be destroyed with new additionsexcept where absolutely necessary. The carpentersalso added two new closets and there again oldwood was used as much as possible, much to thegrumbling of the workers. Instead of new doors, Iinsisted on using old pegged doors that weredestined for the woodpile, and just in time, theworkers were stopped from replacing all the oldworn door landings with new wood.

The carpenters could give us no more time astheir work was stacked up ahead of time.Unsuccessfully my husband tried to get paintersand bricklayers. I was beginning to think we hadmade an awful mistake. Little work was done andwe were all living out of one room. The plastererswere working, thankfully but the house was sofull of dust one could hardly breathe. This lastedfor three weeks and when they left there were stillmany small cracks in the plaster that had to bemended before we could paint.

Politics is the only field in which the moreexperience you have, the worse you get.

- Texan musician running for governor,

Kinky Friedman

Well, one guy is featured at the bottom of page3 with a quote that is brutally honest - JesseVentura. Most recall his wrestling career but healso served his country as a Navy SEAL. And thenhe ran for governor in Minnesota as an Indepen-dent and the people elected him in 1998.

Anyone catching his televised inaugaural ballwill recall one of the wildest parties ever seen. Hedid not seek re-election.

There is a short segment on a particular docu-mentary where Jesse is hanging out with WillieNelson on his bus. The journalist asked Jesse aquestion about his 4 year stint at the Guv’s man-sion in Minnesota. Jesse smiled and said that ‘poli-tics was just like wrestling and that it’s expectedfor you to beat the hell out of your opponent on tvand go for the win but behind the scenes, all po-liticos slap each other on the back and toss backtheir drinks, just like ol’ friends.’

Then, there’s the musician/humorist/writer inTexas who made a run for governor’s office fewyears back and he’s running again for 2010. KinkyFriedman made all politicans shudder because heis a real person and not beholding to anyone. To get a good look at a real person and not acareer politician, check out Kinky’s website athttp://www.kinkyfriedman.com.

We’re not sure when this took place, but Venturatemporarily left his Baja Mexico surfing lifestyleto lend support to Texas gubernatorial candidateKinky Friedman (see photo on the left).

These two men are the most unlikely politicansimaginable. And that is refreshing. And that iswhat is needed.

To heck with running for legislative office, theywent right to the top - to be the Guv’. Jesse pulled

his 4 years and returned to his life. The people will express their desire for change,

on all levels of elections. Yes, there needs to bemore real people like Jesse and Kinky. MaybeTexas will elect Kinky.

And then there’s the occassional comment fromsomeone to Dale, “I’ve never known anyone inall my career who knows the intricacies of thegovernment, the agencies, the boards as you do....”

So, the Redneck Environmentalist might justcast his eye on giving Madam Guv Bev a run forher money in a few years.

Ya’ never know and hey, if a wrestler can getelected, surely the Redneck Environmentalist can! After all, he fights tirelessly for those who are sick, dying and the families’ victims of contaminatedwater and property rights.

Ghost in the Machine Affecting Our WebsiteOver the course of the last year WFS and members

of the EIC have experienced all kinds of troublesomenuisances with our individual email, trying to accesspublic documents online (there today, gone tomorrow),our website, etc.

At this current time, our website was taken downby our service provider as a result of a ‘billing’confusion. In reality, our savvy marketing andadvertising staffer has said that it is due to online billingdeceptive practices.

So, our webmaster is working with our serviceprovider so we can get it back up-n-running. Please bepatient with us while we overcome yet another obstacleso that we can continue getting the truthout about environmental corruption, water quality issues and the really coolstories our writers contribute for allwater enthusiasts to enjoy.

Thanks, folks!
