Chamber Honors included the Deubener Awards and Volunteer Awards that were bestowed in an evening of celebration to recipients on November 5, 2009 at the grand and beautiful Landmark Center in Saint Paul.

While our community is changing and adapting in these historic times, so too are our local businesses that are critical to the prosperity and growth of our community as a whole. One evening a year, the Chamber pays tribute to local businesses that have made an impact on our community and have prospered through innovative practices worth recognizing. The Chamber looks at candidates who have demonstrated excellence through community support, taken sound risks for growth, innovatively adapted to change, supported diversity in the workplace, and taken novel steps to support the overall success of its employees and organization as a whole.

The Deubener Award finalists and award recipients follow in the pioneering footsteps of Walter and Lydia Deubener, the award’s namesakes. The Deubener’s were business trailblazers who engineered the first shopping bag with handles inspired by their downtown Saint Paul grocery concession. Their small concession, established in the early 1900s, proved to be the springboard that would launch the couple into the manufacturing industry as the first distributors and marketers of handled shopping bags, selling nearly one million bags by 1919.

Past recipients of the Deubener Award announced this year’s five winners, one for each award category of emerging business, family-owned, non-profit, service, and women/minority-owned.

Emerging Volunteer of the Year Award

This is the second year the Chamber has presented an award that specifically recognizes an emerging volunteer who has shown exceptional growth, innovation and enthusiasm inside and outside the Chamber.

This year’s Emerging Volunteer of the Year went to Justin Beganik of Beganik Strategy + Design. In 1998, Justin founded Beganik Strategy + Design, a creative marketing solutions firm in Saint Paul. This year Justin has donated countless hours and resources to develop new marketing materials consistent with the Chamber’s re-branding. He has also taken an active role in evaluating the Chamber’s programs and services in order to provide strategic direction for improving the value and return on investment for members. Justin regularly lends himself to speaking engagements and educational events, just recently

participating as a mentor at the Chamber’s Young Professionals Speed Mentoring event. www.beganik.com

Legacy of Leadership Award

This honor is awarded to an individual for his or her continuing exemplary dedication and significant community and public service. The individual must either have lived in or worked in the Saint Paul/East Metro area. Through his or her service, this person must also have contributed to making the region a desirable place to work and live by fostering a climate of business excellence.

The award of Legacy of Leadership was given to Bill Foussard, owner of the Best Western Americanna Inn in St. Cloud and the White Bear Country Inn and Rudy’s Redeye Grill in White Bear Lake. Bill has been in the hotel business since 1975 and has actively promoted the communities of White Bear Lake and the Twin Cities. Bill chairs many committees including “Explore White Bear,” White Bear Lake Marketfest, White Bear Events/Manitou Days, the 2009 White Bear

Lake Governor’s Fishing Opener, and was King Boreas in the 2008 Saint Paul Winter Carnival. He also serves on the boards of the Saint Thomas Academy and the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce. Bill has generously supported the Saint Paul community by co-founding and coordinating Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels, now in its 19th year, and also founded and coordinates the Dinner with Santa Program at the White Bear Country Inn. Not only does Bill try and greet everyone with a hug and a “How you doin?” question, he makes it a point to recognize birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions with a phone call or hand-written note. He is quick to help anyone in need, opening his hotel to families affected by disaster.

The Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all nominees and award recipients for their continued efforts in leadership and volunteerism, and for contributing to the lifeblood of the Saint Paul/East Metro area business community.
