Editorial

Welcome again to the world of NEXUS, which attempts to help you seethe forest because of the trees.

The topic at the forefront of people's minds at this time of going to press isthe state of the economy. The world seems to have run out of money. Wheredid it go? Did it even exist in reality in the first place, or was it just acomputer entry somewhere? Why don't governments print more and put itinto circulation? Lots of emails are coming to NEXUS, asking us what wethink is happening.

Well, at the very heart of the problem is who exactly has been given thepower to issue currency. You see, the average person assumes that thecreation of money and credit is a government-controlled thing. It is not. Itis a private business—and I speak particularly about the US scene. Just as abaker makes bread and sells it, so too do the people in charge of currency. They make it, and sell it to governents to use. What we are witnessing on theplanet is a contraction of the available created credit in existence, which isgoing to lead to the formation of a new global economic system.

Why don't governments take charge of issuing currency, you ask? Well, thelast major attempt at this sort of heresy was done by none other than JFK.His very public murder was a message to other world leaders never to dabblein the affairs of the people in charge of currency creation.

Who are these people, you ask? Well, I do not know. I know that a lot ofreaders will contact me to say that it's the Jewish bankers, or theFreemasons, or the Vatican that are in charge of this—but I believe all ofthese are merely servants to some other real controllers.

Another area of interest and growing concern to people, are the changesthat are occurring with the magnetic fields in our solar system. The Sun,Earth and several planets are exhibiting signs that something big ishappening. While we do not understand what or why, we can clearly see thatEarth's magnetic field is changing rapidly as a response to what ishappening on the Sun, and that this is driving sudden climate change onseveral planets, including our own. (I also have a pet theory that humanconsciousness and solar activity are intimately connected in ways we are yetto comprehend.)

Maybe these changes are also connected to the phenomenon of orbs. Ipersonally cannot see the big deal about orbs, but I am happy that theyexcite so many people, and, to that end, we have an article about them.

Another topic I've been meaning to cover in NEXUS for some time is themysterious "Starchild skull" that Lloyd Pye has been lugging around forsome years. My hunch about this skull is that it is possible evidence for "thelittle people", who are described in encounters and legends as livingunderground in many parts of the planet. After all, it was found deep in anancient tunnel in an area full of such stories about undergroundcivilisations. But as you will read, advanced DNA testing will soon tell uswhat the skull is and is not.

And finally, regarding the next NEXUS Conference, at this stage I'mundecided if or when we will hold a conference this year, let alone as towhere it will be. I will know for sure what is happening by the time you readthe next issue's editorial.

These are times of great change, and I wish you all well on your journeys.Duncan

Global Economic Crisis Dear Duncan: Political

leaders want to claim creditwhen the economy is goingwell and want to hidebehind previousgovernments andinternational factors whenthe economy is bad.

Our government, via itspolicies, can definitely makelocal conditions worse thanelsewhere but globalisationmeans that they can't makegrowth any better for anygreat length of time than itis anywhere else.

In the current climate, globalisation puts a lowceiling on how positivegrowth can be in any onecountry and a floor underhow negative growth canget under no country. Theend result is that alleconomies are sinking;government policies canonly determine the speed ofthe sinking but they can'tstop it—the market (herd)won't let them.

The international herd isnow in a slow stampedethat's about to becomemuch quicker. The seeds ofthe soon-to-arrivedepression lay in spendingon unnecessary wars anddecades-long speculationin real estate/stocksemploying ever-increasingleverage ratios withoutanything being producedthat meets a real need. Inshort, the loomingdepression is the outcomeof corrupt governmentsputting off implementingproper lending controls atthe behest of a corruptfinance industry thatpressures the governmentto look the other way whileit creates bad debt.

The truth is that “they”,

the corrupt nature ofgovernment and businessand the crisis we findourselves in is a collectiveexpression of our individualgreed.

Changing the type ofpeople who manifest as ourcollective leaders at themacro level necessitateschanging our internal selvesat the micro level of theindividual.

The quantum and unifiedfield effects of changedindividuals (at the level ofthe neuron/frontal lobe) willhave the effect of changingthe leaders who emerge tolead. Personal change atthe neuron/frontal lobelevel necessarily requiresindividuals to becomeconscious of, interact with, modify and ultimately freethemselves of theiremotional peptideaddictions.

These addictions arelearned over the course oflifetimes and are inter-generational in nature, sothey require real work overa sustained period toovercome. The task isnevertheless notimpossible!

Nazi UFO in AustraliaDear Duncan: As an avid

subscriber/reader of NEXUSMagazine, not muchsurprises me these days. However, the February-March 2009 edition [16/02]has managed to knock mysocks off.

In the 1960s, I had a UFOsighting. This object flewsilently over my home, lower than any conventionalaircraft. At the time, I was amember of the RAAF andwas based at Pearce Air

Force Base in Perth,Western Australia. I wasfamiliar with aircraft types.

I wrote about, anddiagrammed in detail, thesighting in a book thatremains unpublished.

To my surprise, whenreading the article on page40 about the "SecretTechnology of the ThirdReich", there was the exactdrawing of the UFO I hadseen, the only differencebeing the antenna-likeobject not on top as it wason my diagram.

The shock of seeing theUFO there wasunbelievable, but to thenread it was a Nazi secretweapon was sheeramazement.

To know what I saw and toknow that NEXUS articlesare so accurate, I'm justblown away.

Keep up the fight toenlighten.

AIDS Dogma ExposedSir: I am extremely

impressed by the excellent"dossier" on AIDS thatappeared in the Frenchedition of NEXUS—adossier that has been mostprofessionally prepared byPryska Ducoeurjoly.

Please, give it a completelook. This is a mostconvincing presentation ofthe entire AIDS nightmare(dogma!).

I would be absolutelydelighted if you couldarrange for this mostimportant dossier to betranslated into English andpublished in NEXUS.

I sincerely believe thatthis will be a mostsignificant contribution to

make the public aware ofwhat has been probably thedarkest page in the historyof medical science in the20th century.

I am completely availablefor any help I could providein that direction.

UFOs and World ChangesDear Duncan: Thank you

for a most interesting andinformative periodical. Ihave found no comparisonthat suits my interests.

I was perusing vol. 15, no.5, and was glad to read yourcomments regarding a bigincrease on the Internet inpeople coming forward tospeak about their alien/UFOabduction and contactexperiences.

This is a subject that hasheld my interest since the1960s. We are often left towonder, though, just what ispart of a disinformationprogram and what isactually true. Hopefully thissubject will continue tobecome more clearlyunderstood and truthful.

I wonder if the reportedsightings were actually ofalien craft or of governmentexperimental craft, etc.

In regard to your statingthat people are emailingsaying "something" haschanged, this seems to beeasily discernable to manyof us. Time in fact seems tobe increasing its speed, andsince the 9/11 destruction itseems as though there is acollective negative moodenveloping so much ofsociety; that is now beingfurther impacted upon by

At any rate, once again, thank you for an excellentand informative periodicalthat would be mostwelcome in the mailboxmonthly rather than bi-monthly!

Golan Heights MegalithsDear Sir: The Golan

Heights spreads over 1,250square kilometres and is animportant spring regionthat supplies four stateswith water.

The great presence ofstatic electricity in thisregion can be deduced fromthe high number ofmegalithic structures.

A local circular structureof 159 metres in diameter iscomposed of five concentriccircles that are laid out byfreely laying stones that allweigh 37,000 tons in total.

The heaviest single stonesthat were used weigh about20 tons. Around thisstructure there are a further8,500 dolmens and menhirs, the heaviest weighing 50tons, and they are up toseven metres in height.

The Golan Heights may bethought of as a naturallaboratory which canprovide us with historicalinformation, in view of thisresearch.

The static electricity thatis almost unknown topresent science was crucialfor all megalithic structuresthat were built around theEarth. The new knowledgeabout properties of staticelectricity that I describe atwww.miroslavprovod.comprovides more in-depthinformation via continuing

research about themysteries of construction ofmegalithic structures withcombinations of differenttypes of rocks; for example,at Stonehenge, MachuPicchu and many othersites.

The megalithic structureshad all the same function. They accumulated staticelectricity in their matter, which they gained fromvarious sources. At theGolan Heights the sourcesare mainly undergroundsprings, which provide themegaliths with the staticelectricity charge.

The electronics of thehuman body take the staticelectricity from cellularmembranes in order tomaintain functionality of allorgans. The staticelectricity is continuouslysupplied by mitochondria.

It can be proved byvarious experiments thatthe charge of the humanbody can be filled by othermeans as well—by stayingclose to a greater source ofstatic electricity, whichspontaneously gives theenergy to cellularmembranes. The transfer ofenergy is rather slow.

In the case of transferbetween a rock and ahuman body, it takes tens ofminutes. This shows thatthe megalithic structuresand, later, also the sacredstructures were built mainlyfor health purposes.

CIA's Secret Technology Dear Duncan: Thank you

for publishing the interviewby Linda Moulton Howewith ex-CIA agent "Stein" in

NEXUS vol. 16, no. 2. Thisinterview actually revealsmore secret technologythan at first might appear. The interview is prefaced bythe information that agentStein worked for the CIAbetween 1957 and 1960.Stein also states in thesecond reply to LMH’squestions in column 2, page50, that he used his"security card to zip throughthe lock”.

According to conventionalhistories, magnetic stripetechnology only began to bedeveloped, by IBM, from1966 onwards (see web pagehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_stripe).

Clearly, the CIA hadaccess to this technologyover half a decade before itwas released to the generalpublic, and it's no surprisethat IBM was used at themarketing "front".

That this technology hasbeen used around the worldfor the last three decadesmight explain where thefunding for the CIA's "blackops" comes from, withoutthe scrutiny of Congressever being engaged.

I think more investigationof this would be mostuseful.

Yours sincerely,Steve W.

Climate Change ConDear Duncan: Of course,

"The Climate ChangeDebate Goes On", as it mustdo (NEXUS vol. 16, no. 2).

I have been attendingscience and climateconferences for the past 30years, and have writtenextensively about climatechange long before itbecame fashionable. I havenoticed with alarm that the

subject has changed beforemy very eyes from globalcooling to warming, markedly so in the last 10years.

It is clear that doctrinaireattitudes about culture andscience have seeped intothe West since the collapseof communism in the East.“Environmentalism” is apowerful anti-growth andwell-financed crusadingmovement that hasattracted political activistswho would formerly havebelonged to the CND[Campaign for NuclearDisarmament] and otherprotest movements andwho similarly brook noopposition.

This time, though, theactivists have succeeded inpenetrating deep into thewestern media and politicalestablishment.

It will cost billions toretool the West's energygeneration systems, all forno purpose.

Worse, the westernscientific canon is underassault from thissubversion. All the majorscience magazines promoteglobal warming rhetoric.Meteorology, climatology, all the Earth sciences andeven environmentalismitself are being insidiouslyundermined. The rot isspreading to ecology, organic chemistry and solarphysics.

When it finally dawns onthe politicians and a latergeneration of scientists thatthey have been conned, there will be all hell to pay. What is happening is acatastrophe from which theWest may not recover.

PATIENTS CAN SUE DRUGCOMPANIES, US SUPREME

COURT RULES

Patients have the right tosue drug companies

when they've been harmedby medications whose risksaren't adequately disclosed, the US Supreme Court ruledtoday [4 March] in animportant 6–3 decision.

The much-watched case isa significant defeat for thepharmaceutical industry andcould open the door tothousands of lawsuitsagainst drug firms.

The suit was brought by aVermont musician, DianaLevine, who lost her arm in2000 after being given an injectionof an anti-nausea drug at a healthclinic. Gangrene set in immediately, leading to the loss of the limb.

Levine sued Wyeth, thedrugmaker, alleging that it failed towarn sufficiently of serious risksassociated with intravenousinjection of the drug. A Vermontjury awarded the woman US$6.7million, and the Vermont SupremeCourt affirmed the verdict in 2006.

Ironically, a year ago, the USSupreme Court affirmed that

medical devices approved by theFDA were largely shielded fromproduct liability suits in statecourts. However, the laws governingmedical devices are different fromthose governing the drug industry.(Source: Chicago Tribune, 4 March 2009,http://tinyurl.com/cwtuz9)

"ALIEN" GENES ESCAPE INTO WILD CORN

Now it's official: genes fromgenetically modified (GM) corn

have escaped into wild corn

varieties in rural Mexico. Anew study resolves a long-running controversy overthe spread of GM genes andsuggests that detectingsuch escapes may betougher than previouslythought.

A team led by Dr ElenaAlvarez-Buylla, from theNational AutonomousUniversity of Mexico, foundtransgenes in about one percent of nearly 2,000 samplesthey took from the region(see Molecular Ecology, vol.18, p. 750).(Source: New Scientist, issue no.2696, 21 February 2009,http://tinyurl.com/bsn758)

MICROCHIPS IN HUMANS MAYBECOME COMPULSORY

All Australians could beimplanted with microchips for

tracking and identification withinthe next two or three generations, aprominent academic says.

Michael G. Michael, from theUniversity of Wollongong's (UOW's)School of Information Systems andTechnology, has coined the term"uberveillance" to describe theemerging trend of all-encompassingsurveillance.

"Uberveillance is not on theoutside looking down, but on theinside looking out through amicrochip that is embedded in ourbodies," Dr Michael said.

He predicted that microchipimplants and their infrastructurecould eliminate the need for e-passports, e-tags and secure ID cards.

"Microchipping I think willeventually become compulsory inthe context of identification withinthe frame of national security," DrMichael said.

Although uberveillance is only inits early phases, Dr Michael's wife,Katina Michael—a senior lecturerfrom UOW's School of InformationSystems and Technology—said the

FRAUD ALLEGED IN ORIGINALHIV=AIDS PAPERS

Thirty-seven legal, medical andresearch professionals have sent

a letter to the journal Science, askingit to officially retract the originalfour papers that made the case forHIV as the cause of AIDS. Accordingto the letter's authors, widespreadevidence has now emerged that thestudies were not only poorly carriedout but their results were falsified.

In 1984, Robert Gallo, MD,published four articles in Science, claiming that he had isolated HIV(human immunodeficiency virus)and concluding that it was the"probable cause of AIDS".

Investigative journalist JanineRoberts has discovered, however, that Dr Gallo made last-minutealterations to the lead paper and itsresults.

"I was shocked when I read theoriginal draft of the key scientificpaper now widely cited as provingHIV causes AIDS," saidRoberts, author of Fear ofthe Invisible . "Gallo'shandwritten last-minutechanges reversed whatthe scientists in his labhad originallyconcluded.

This demonstrates astunning disregard forthe scientific processand a very disturbingbreach of public trust."

Along with a copy ofthe handwrittenchanges, the letter fromthe 37 experts includes a

letter from Gallo himself, admittingto another researcher that HIV couldnot be isolated from humansamples alone; and a letter from anelectron microscopy expert sayingthat there was no HIV in Gallo's1984 samples.

Dr Gallo's work has come under firebefore, with US governmentinvestigations in the 1990sconcluding that the lead paper was"fraught with false and erroneousstatements" and that "the carelessand unacceptable keeping of researchrecords...reflects irresponsiblelaboratory management that haspermanently impaired the ability toretrace the important steps taken".

"With new findings that underminethe scientific integrity and veracityof Gallo's four papers, the entirebasis of the theory that HIV causesAIDS may now be questioned," saidDavid Crowe, president of theinternational organisationRethinking AIDS.(Source: NaturalNews.com, 6 March 2009,http://www.naturalnews.com/025787.html;also see http://www.rethinkingaids.com)

US CYBER SECURITY HEAD QUITSOVER THREATS TO DEMOCRACY

Rod Beckstrom, head of the USDepartment of Homeland

Security's National Cyber SecurityCenter (NCSC), has quit, saying thatthe National Security Agency's

expanding control over the nation'scomputer security efforts poses"threats to our democratic processes".

In a letter to Homeland SecuritySecretary Janet Napolitano,Beckstrom said that the NSA"dominates most national cyber-efforts" and "effectively controls DHScyber-efforts through detailees, technology insertions and theproposed move" of the NCSC to anNSA facility at the agency's FortMeade, Maryland, headquarters.

Successive administrations havewrestled with the complex problemof how to delineate and define theroles of various intelligence, militaryand security agencies in assuringthe integrity of the nation'scomputer networks—the vastmajority of which are owned andoperated by the private sector anddepend for their efficacy on theiropen and accessible, and thereforesecurity-unfriendly, architecture.

In his resignation letter,Beckstrom wrote that "the NCSC didnot receive appropriate supportinside DHS".

"…During the past year, the NCSCreceived only five weeks of funding, due to various roadblocksengineered within the departmentand by the Office of Managementand Budget," he wrote. (Source: United Press International, 11March 2009, http://tinyurl.com/alw6yc)

SCIENTISTS BUILD NANO-ROBOT

US and Chinese scientists havecreated a two-armed nano-robot

that can manipulate moleculeswithin a device built from DNA.

The researchers, from New YorkUniversity and China's NanjingUniversity, said the programmableunit allows researchers to captureand manoeuvre patterns on anunprecedented scale.

New York University chemistryprofessor Nadrian Seeman, one ofthe study's co-authors, said that thetwo-armed nano-robotic deviceenables the creation of new DNAstructures, thereby potentiallyserving as a factory for assemblingthe building blocks of new materials.

With that capability, it has thepotential to develop new syntheticfibres, advance the encryption ofinformation and improve DNA-scaffolded computer assembly.

The researchers said their deviceperforms with 100 per cent accuracy,as confirmed by atomic forcemicroscopy that permits features afew billionths of a metre in size tobe visualised.

The research, also conducted byProfessor Shou-Jun Xiao andgraduate students Hongzhou Guand Jie Chao, is reported in thejournal Nature Nanotechnology.(Source: UPI, via SpaceDaily.com, 16February 2009, http://tinyurl.com/dkev9l)

FRANCE BANS ADVERTISING OFMOBILE PHONES TO CHILDREN

New laws cracking down onchildren's use of mobile phones

are to be introduced in France amidgrowing fears that emissions fromthe phones may cause cancer andother diseases.

All advertising of the devices tochildren under 12 is to be prohibitedunder the legislation, which will alsoban the sale of any phone designedto be used by those under six.

The French government will alsointroduce new limits for radiationfrom the phones and make itcompulsory for handsets to be soldwith earphones, so that users canavoid irradiating their heads andbrains.

These are the most comprehensiveactions yet taken by any governmentworldwide.

In Toronto, Ontario, Canada, theDepartment of Public Health hasadvised that children under eightshould only use mobiles inemergencies and that teenagersshould limit calls to less than 10minutes.

Russia's Ministry of Health haswarned that young people under 18should not use the devices, andIsrael's Health Ministry has alsoadvised caution.(Source: The Independent, UK, 11January 2009, http://tinyurl.com/7zt8rf)

Swiss bank accounts are now setfor a shake-up, with the Swissgovernment agreeing to ease itsstrict banking-secrecy rules. Thegovernment has also agreed to co-operate with investigations into taxevasion. Switzerland is the world'sbiggest "offshore" financial centre, with an estimated US$3 trillion inglobal wealth held in its banks.

Geneva-based journalist AndreasZumach said that the decision willlead to a lot of money leavingSwitzerland. "I think this is the endof the Swiss bank secrecy as we haveknown it," he said.

Luxembourg has also agreed torelax its secrecy rules and to co-operate with foreign tax authoritiesin cases where fraud is suspected, the Treasury and Budget MinisterLuc Frieden announced.

Luxembourg, Belgium and Austriaare the only European Unioncountries that currently do not shareinformation about savings account-holders from other countries withtheir tax authorities.

Belgium, which instead ofexchanging information with othertax administrations applies awithholding tax on interest earnedon foreign residents' savingsaccounts, has now announced asimilar move to Luxembourg's.

Austria has insisted it will only liftits banking secrecy where there is"justified suspicion" of wrong-doing.

Bowing to international pressure,Liechtenstein and Andorra also saidthey would ease their secrecy rulesand swap information with foreigngovernments to combat tax fraudand evasion.(Sources: ABC News, 13 & 14 March2009, http://www.abc.net.au)

PINE GAP, DEMOCRACY GAP

On 26 February 2009, during a Senate Estimates hearing, I asked the[Australian] Department of Defence about a review reported to be

underway between the United States and Australian governments on thePine Gap agreement. The senior Department of Defence person had neverheard of a review but assured me that he and his department would knowif such a review were underway.

Signed in 1967, the agreement about Pine Gap between Australia and theUSA was sealed when the token payment of a single peppercorn passed hands. In November 2008, the last 10-year extension of that treaty expired.

US Consul-General Michael Thurston said in an ABC piece online on Monday23 February: "It's under review and that's what you do periodically withagreements, you take a look at them, and both sides agree that this is what youwant; you either upgrade or update the agreement, you make changes or youdon't make changes, and then you send it around for review and that'sprobably more the timely process...getting everybody who's got an interesttaking a look and actually signing off on it."

It most certainly would be good to take a look at this agreement, but citizensor parliamentarians are not allowed to see it. In 1999, the government refusedto provide information about Pine Gap to the Joint Standing Committee onTreaties—information that is made freely available to members of the USCongress. Nothing has changed since then. Although US Congress officialshave visited Pine Gap and received classified briefings about its functions, elected representatives and senators are entrusted with less information thancan be found in a public library.

The history of disinformation and misinformation about Pine Gap is long. In1966, Australians were told the facility was to be a weather station. Later, theofficial cover was a "Space Research Centre". Australians have the right toknow what is happening on Australian soil at one of largest and mostsophisticated satellite ground stations in the world.

Last week, the Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee issued areport on a government bill to clamp down on peaceful protest at Pine Gap,which the Australian Greens opposed. Under the Defence Legislation(Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill, the government strengthens the provisionsdefining Pine Gap as a "prohibited area" required for the defence of Australia. Those who enter or photograph the site face imprisonment for up to sevenyears. Adequate legislation already exists to protect Pine Gap from trespass oracts of aggression; in particular, the Crimes Act of 1914.

If Pine Gap is indeed a "core element" of Australia's national security,Australians have a right to know how and why. Rather than making the case forthe proposed amendments, the government has described citizens exercisingtheir democratic right to protest as "mischief-makers" and has furnished thecommittee with statements such as "Pine Gap makes an importantcontribution to the security interests of both Australia and the United States ofAmerica... The methods used for collecting intelligence at the facility aresensitive...", with absolutely no supporting evidence of any kind. These are notconvincing arguments and neither are those made in the committee's report.

Rather than being convinced that Pine Gap does protect Australians, theSenate is being asked to enact legislation that would further shield Pine Gapfrom Australians. Such efforts to erode democratic rights are unsupportableand run directly counter to the kind of "security" we need.(Source: Blog by Scott Ludlam, The Australian Greens MPs website, 27 February2009, http://greensmps.org.au/blog/pine-gap-democracy-gap-0)

"We will rebuild, we will recover, and the United States of America willemerge stronger."

— US President Barack Obama, State of the Union Address, 24 February 2009

"Strong economic medicine" with a "human face"

At first sight, the recent US budget proposal has all the appearancesof an expansionary program, a demand-oriented "Second NewDeal" geared towards creating employment, rebuilding shatteredsocial programs and reviving the real economy. The realities are

otherwise. Obama's promise is based on a mammoth austerity program. Theentire fiscal structure is shattered, turned upside down.

To reach these stated objectives, a significant hike in public spending onsocial programs (health, education, housing, social security) would berequired as well as the implementation of a large-scale public investmentprogram. Major shifts in the composition of public expenditure would alsobe needed, i.e., a move out of a war economy, requiring a movement out ofmilitary-related spending in favour of civilian programs.

In actuality, what we are dealing with is the most drastic curtailment in publicspending in American history, leading to social havoc and the potential impov-erishment of millions of people.

The Obama promise largely serves the interests of Wall Street, thedefence contractors and the oil conglomerates. In turn, the Bush–Obama"bank bail-outs" are leading America into a spiralling public debt crisis. The economic and social dislocations are potentially devastating.

Obama's budget submitted to Congress on 26 February 2009 envisagesoutlays for the 2010 fiscal year (commencing 1 October 2009) of US$3.94trillion, an increase of 32 per cent. Total government revenues for the 2010fiscal year, according to preliminary estimates by the Bureau of the Budget[Office of Management and Budget], are in the order of $2.381 trillion. Thepredicted budget deficit (according to the President's speech) is in theorder of $1.75 trillion, almost 12 per cent of US gross domestic product.

War and Wall StreetThis is a "war budget". The austerity measures hit all major federal

spending programs with the exception of defence and the Middle East war,the Wall Street bank bail-out and interest payments on a staggering publicdebt. It diverts tax revenues into financing the war. It legitimises thefraudulent transfers of tax dollars to the financial elites under the "bankbail-outs".

The pattern of deficit spending is not expansionary. We are not dealingwith a Keynesian-style deficit, which stimulates investment and consumerdemand, leading to an expansion of production and employment.

The "bank bail-outs", involving several initiativesfinanced by tax dollars, constitute a component of gov-ernment expenditure. Both the Bush and Obama bankbail-outs are hand-outs to major financial institutions. They do not constitute a positive spending injectioninto the real economy. Quite the opposite. The bail-outs contribute to financing the restructuring of thebanking system, leading to a massive concentration ofwealth and centralisation of banking power.

A large part of the bail-out money granted by the USgovernment will be transferred electronically to variousaffiliated accounts, including the hedge funds. Thelargest banks in the US will also use this windfall cashto buy out their weaker competitors, thereby consoli-dating their position. The tendency, therefore, istowards a new wave of corporate buy-outs, mergersand acquisitions in the financial services industry.

In turn, the financial elites will use these largeamounts of liquid assets(paper wealth), together withthe hundreds of billionsacquired through speculativetrade, to buy out real-economycorporations (airlines, theautomobile industry, telecoms, media, etc.) whose quotedvalue on the stock markets hastumbled.

In essence, a budget deficit—combined with massive cuts insocial programs—is required tofund the hand-outs to thebanks as well as to financedefence spending and the military surge in the MiddleEast war. Obama's budget envisages:

1. Defence spending of $534 billion for 2010, asupplemental $130 billion appropriation for fiscal 2010for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and asupplemental $75.5 billion emergency war funding forthe rest of the 2009 fiscal year. Defence spending andthe Middle East war, with various supplementalbudgets, is officially in the order of $739.5 billion. Some estimates place aggregate defence and military-related spending at $1 trillion+.

2. A bank bail-out in the order of $750 billion, whichis added onto the $700 billion bail-out money alreadyallocated by the outgoing Bush administration underthe Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP). The totalof both programs is a whopping $1.45 trillion, to befinanced by the US Treasury. It should be understoodthat the actual amount of cash financial "aid" to thebanks is significantly larger than $1.45 trillion.

3. Net interest on the outstanding public debt isestimated by the Bureau of the Budget at $164 billionin 2010.

The order of magnitude of these allocations isstaggering. Under a "balanced budget" criterion—

which has been a priority of government economicpolicy since the Reagan era—almost all the revenuesof the federal government, amounting to $2.381trillion, would be used to finance the bank bail-out($1.45 trillion), the war ($739 billion) and interestpayments on the public debt ($164 billion). In otherwords, no money would be left over for othercategories of public expenditure...

Fiscal CrisisA major crisis of the federal fiscal structure is occur-

ring. The multibillion-dollar allocations to the warbudget and to the Wall Street bank bail-out programbacklash on all other categories of public expenditure.

The Bush administration's $700 billion bail-outunder the TARP was approved by Congress in October2008. TARP is but the tip of the iceberg. A panoply ofbail-out allocations in addition to the $700 billion

were decided upon prior toObama's assuming office. InNovember, the federal govern-ment's bank rescue programwas estimated at an astonish-ing $8.5 trillion—an amountequivalent to more than 60 percent of the US public debt, estimated at $14 trillion (2007).

Meanwhile, under theObama budget proposal, $634billion is allocated to a reservefund to finance universalhealth care. At first sight, itappears to be a large amount.

But it is to be spent over a 10-year period, i.e., amodest annual commitment of $63.4 billion.

Public spending will be slashed with a view to cur-tailing a spiralling budget deficit. Health and educa-tion programs will not only remain heavily underfund-ed, they will be slashed, revamped and privatised. Thelikely outcome is the outright privatisation of publicservices and the sale of State assets including publicinfrastructure, urban services, highways, nationalparks, etc. Fiscal collapse leads to the privatisation ofthe State.

The fiscal crisis is further exacerbated by the com-pression of tax revenues resulting from the decline ofthe real economy. Unemployed workers do not paytaxes; nor do bankrupt firms. The process is cumula-tive. The solution to the fiscal crisis becomes thecause of further collapse.

Structure of the Public DebtThis large-scale appropriation of liquid money assets

under the bank bail-outs by a handful of financial insti-tutions serves to increase the public debt overnight.

When the US Treasury allocates $700 billion to theTroubled Assets Relief Program, this amount

financial institutions.

Page 13: Nexus 1603 - new times magazine

constitutes a budgetary outlay which inevitably mustbe financed from within the structure of governmentrevenues and expenditures.

Unless all other categories of public expenditureincluding health, education and social services areslashed, the various outlays under the bank bail-outwill require running a massive budget deficit which inturn will increase the US public debt.

America is the most indebted country on Earth. TheUS (federal government) public debt is currently in theorder of $14 trillion. This does not include mountingpublic debts at the state and municipal levels.

This US dollar denominated federal debt is com-posed of outstanding Treasury bills and governmentbonds. The public debt, also called "the nationaldebt", is the amount of money owedby the federal government to holdersof US debt instruments.

US debt instruments are held byAmerican residents as part of theirsavings portfolios, by companies andfinancial institutions, by US govern-ment agencies, by foreign govern-ments and individuals in foreigncountries, but do not include inter-governmental debt obligations ordebt held in the Social Security TrustFund.

Types of securities held by the pub-lic include, but are not limitedto, Treasury bills, notes, bonds,TIPS [Treasury inflation-protect-ed securities], United States sav-ings bonds, and State and LocalGovernment Series [SLGS] secu-rities.

The proposed solutionbecomes the cause of the crisis. The $700 billion bail-out underthe TARP, combined with theproposed Obama $750 billionaid to the financial servicesindustry, is but the tip of the ice-berg. A panoply of bail-out allocations, in addition tothe $700 billion, has been decided upon.

The Bush "Bank Bail-out"The government's bank rescue program under the

Bush administration was estimated at a staggering$8.5 trillion, an amount equivalent to 60 per cent ofthe total gross federal debt of $14.078 trillion (2010).This amount does not include the "aid" to financialinstitutions proposed by the Obama administration, including an additional $750 billion in Obama'sFebruary 2009 budget proposal. The size of these allo-cations of liquid assets endangers the very structuresof the fiscal and monetary system.

The total of Bush administration bank bail-outs ($8.5trillion) can be broken down into funds granted by theFederal Reserve, the Treasury, the Federal DepositInsurance Corporation and the Federal HousingAuthority.

The hand-outs to the financial institutions financedout of Treasury are government expenditures, to bemet either through tax revenues or the emission ofpublic debt instruments.

The disbursements under TARP are categorised bythe Bureau of the Budget as part of "a mandatory pro-gram" under an Act of US Congress. The Treasury's lia-bility, which includes the controversial TARP, was esti-mated in November 2008 at $1.1 trillion...

Spiralling Public Debt Is the Treasury in a position to

finance this mounting budget deficit, officially tagged at $1.75 billion, through the emission of Treasurybills and government bonds?

The largest budget deficit in US historycoupled with the lowest interestrates in US history: with the Fed's"near zero" per cent discount rate, the markets for US dollar denominat-ed government bonds and Treasurybills are in a straitjacket. Moreover, the essential functions of savings

(which are central to the func-tioning of a national economy)are in crisis.

Who wants to invest in US gov-ernment debt? What is thedemand for Treasury bills atexceedingly low interest rates?

The market for US dollardenominated debt instrumentsis potentially at a standstill, which means that the Treasurylacks the ability to finance itsmammoth budget deficitthrough public debt operations,

leading the entire budgetary process into a quandary. The question is whether China and Japan will contin-

ue to purchase dollar denominated debt instruments.Washington is running a public relations campaign tolure Asian investors into buying T-bills and US govern-ment bonds.

With the markets for US dollar denominated debt incrisis both domestically and internationally, furtherpressure will be exerted on the Treasury to slash civil-ian public expenditure to the bone, exact user-fees forpublic services and sell off public assets includingState infrastructure and institutions. In all likelihood, this crisis is leading us to the privatisation of the State, where activities hitherto under government jurisdiction

Page 14: Nexus 1603 - new times magazine

will be transferred into private hands. Who will be buying State assets at rock-bottom

prices? The financial elites, which are also the recipi-ents of the bank bail-out.

Consolidation of the BanksA massive amount of liquidity has been injected into

the financial system from the bail-outs but also frompension funds, individual savings, etc.

The stated objective of the bank bail-out programs isto alleviate the banks' burden of bad debts and non-performing loans. In actuality, what is happening isthat these massive amounts of money are being usedby a handful of institutions to consolidate their posi-tion in global banking.

The exposure of the banks, largely the result of thederivatives trade, is estimated in the tens of trillions ofdollars, to the extent that the amounts and guaranteesgranted by the Treasury andthe Fed will not resolve the cri-sis. Nor are they intended toresolve the crisis.

The mainstream media sug-gest that the banks are beingnationalised as a result ofTARP. In fact, it is exactly theopposite. The State is being takenover by the banks; the State is beingprivatised. The establishment ofa worldwide unipolar financialsystem is part of the broaderproject of the Wall Streetfinancial elites to establish thecontours of a world government.

In a bitter irony, the recipients of the bail-out underTARP and Obama's proposed $750 billion aid to finan-cial institutions are the creditors of the federal govern-ment. The Wall Street banks are the brokers andunderwriters of the US public debt; although they holdonly a portion of the debt, they transact and trade inUS dollar denominated public debt instruments world-wide.

They act as creditors of the US State. They evaluatethe creditworthiness of the US government. They rankthe public debt through Moody's and Standard &Poor's. They control the US Treasury, the FederalReserve Board and the US Congress. They oversee anddictate fiscal and monetary policy, ensuring that theState acts in their interest.

Since the Reagan era, Wall Street has dominatedmost areas of economic and social policy. It sets thebudgetary agenda, ensuring the curtailment of socialexpenditures. Wall Street preaches balanced budgetsbut the practice has been lobbying for the eliminationof corporate taxes, the granting of hand-outs to corpo-rations, tax write-offs in mergers and acquisitions, etc.,all of which lead to a spiralling public debt.

A Circular and Contradictory RelationshipThe Federal Reserve System is a privately owned cen-

tral bank. While the Federal Reserve Board is a govern-ment body, the process of money creation is controlledby the 12 Federal Reserve Banks, which are privatelyowned.

The shareholders of the Federal Reserve Banks, withthe New York Federal Reserve Bank playing the domi-nant role, are among America's most powerful finan-cial institutions.

While the Federal Reserve can create money "out ofthin air", the multibillion-dollar outlays of the Treasury(including the TARP program) will require the emissionof public debt in the form of Treasury bills and govern-ment bonds.

US financial institutions oversee the US public debt. They are involved in the sale of Treasury bills and gov-ernment bonds on financial markets in the US and

around the world, but they alsohold part of the public debt.

In this regard, they are thecreditors of the US government.Part of this increased publicdebt required to rescue thebanks will be financed or bro-kered by the same financialinstitutions which are theobject of the bank rescue plan.

We are dealing with a perni-cious circular relationship. When the banks pressured theTreasury to assist them in theform of a major bank rescueoperation, it was understood

from the outset that the banks would in turn assist theTreasury in financing the hand-outs of which they arethe recipients.

To finance the bank bail-out, the Treasury needs torun a massive budget deficit, which in turn requires astaggering increase of the US public debt.

Public opinion has been misled. The US governmentis in a sense financing its own indebtedness: themoney granted to the banks is in part financed by bor-rowing from the banks.

The banks lend money to the government, and withthis money the Treasury finances the bail-out. In turn, the banks impose conditionalities on the managementof the US public debt. They dictate how the moneyshould be spent. They impose fiscal responsibility.

They dictate massive cuts in social expenditureswhich result in the collapse and/or privatisation ofpublic services. They impose the privatisation of urbaninfrastructure, roads, sewerage and water systems, andpublic recreational areas. Everything is up for privati-sation.

The recipient banks are the beneficiaries as well asthe creditors.

a world government.

Page 15: Nexus 1603 - new times magazine

As creditors, they will oblige the government to slashexpenditures and run up the public debt through theissuing of Treasury bills and government bonds.

This public debt crisis is all the more seriousbecause the US federal government does not controlmonetary policy.

All public debt operations go through the FederalReserve, which is in charge of monetary policy, actingon behalf of private financial interests. The govern-ment as such has no authority over money creation. This means that public debt operations essentiallyserve the interests of the banks.

Continuity from Bush to ObamaThe Obama stimulus program constitutes a continu-

ation of the Bush administration'sbank bail-out packages.

The proposed policy solution to thecrisis becomes the cause, ultimatelyresulting in further real economybankruptcies and a correspondingcollapse of the standard of living ofAmericans.

Both the Bush and Obama bankbail-outs are intended to come to therescue of troubled financial institu-tions to ensure the payment of "inter-bank" debt operations.

In practice, large amounts of moneytransit through the banking sys-tem, from the banks to the hedgefunds, to offshore banking havensand back to the banks.

The government and the mediatend to focus on the ambiguousnotion of "inter-bank debts". Theidentity of the creditors is rarelymentioned.

Multibillion-dollar transfers areconducted electronically fromone financial entity to another.Where is the money going? Whois collecting these multibillion-dollar debts, which are in large part the consequenceof financial manipulation and the derivatives trade?

There are indications that the financial institutionsare transferring billions of dollars into their affiliatedhedge funds. From these hedge funds they can thenchannel money capital towards the acquisition of realassets.

Through what circuitous financial mechanisms werethese debts created? Where is the bail-out moneygoing?

Who is cashing in on the multibillion-dollar govern-ment bail-out money?

This process is contributing to an unprecedentedconcentration of private wealth.

Concluding RemarksFinancial manipulation is an integral part of the New

World Order. It constitutes a powerful means to accu-mulate wealth. Under the present political arrange-ment, those responsible for monetary policy are quitedeliberately serving the interests of the financiers tothe detriment of working people, leading to economicdislocation, unemployment and mass poverty.

This article has focused on how financial manipula-tion has served to shatter the structure of US publicexpenditure. More generally, this restructuring of glob-al financial markets and institutions (alongside the pil-lage of national economies) has enabled the accumu-lation of vast amounts of private wealth, a large por-tion of which has been amassed as a result of strictly

speculative transactions. This critical drain of billions of dol-

lars of household savings and statetax revenues paralyses the functionsof government spending and spurs theaccumulation of a public debt whichcan no longer be be financed throughthe emission of US dollar denominat-ed debt.

What we are dealing with is thefraudulent transfer and confiscation oflifelong savings and pension funds, and the fraudulent appropriation oftax revenues to finance the bank bail-

outs, etc. To understand what hashappened, follow the money trailof electronic transfers with a viewto establishing where the moneyhas gone. What is at stake is theoutright criminalisation of thefinancial system—"financial theft"on an unprecedented scale.

The monetary system, which isintegrated into the State bud-getary process, has been desta-bilised. The fundamental rela-tionship between the monetarysystem and the real economy is in

crisis. The creation of money "out of thin air" threatens the

value of the US dollar as an international currency.Similarly, the financing of a mammoth US budgetdeficit through dollar denominated debt instrumentsis impaired as a result of exceedingly low interestrates. Moreover, the process of household savings isundermined with interest rates close to zero.

What we have dealt with in this article is one centralaspect of an evolving process of global financial col-lapse.

The international payments system is in crisis.

Introduction

Are unrecognised infectious bacteria involved in prostate cancer? Can bacteria cause cancer? Each year, 680,000 men worldwide arediagnosed with prostate cancer. The disease is the most commonform of cancer in American men, with 230,000 new cases yearly and

30,000 deaths annually. There is an 80 per cent chance that by the age of 80 a man will have

prostate cancer. In many cases the cancer is slow-growing, and elderlymen with prostate cancer often die from some other cause.

The treatment is usually surgical removal of the entire prostate gland ora series of radiation treatments to the prostate. Both procedures oftenresult in urinary incontinence and impotence.

Since the late 1980s, the PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test hasbeen used widely as a screening test to detect a protein that can beassociated with prostate cancer. A rising PSA level of 4.0 nanograms ormore signifies possible cancer. However, a study in 2004 determined that15 per cent of men with PSA levels less than 4.0 had cancer when theirprostates were assessed with biopsies. This new finding is causing turmoiland controversy in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.

What causes prostate cancer? The cause of prostate cancer is considered unknown. Acute and chronic

inflammation of the prostate (prostatitis) is a common and painfulcondition affecting younger and middle-aged men. Chronic prostatitis isalso a common but poorly understood condition, and there is debate as towhether it is a risk factor for cancer. Antibiotics are used in the majority ofprostatitis cases, and a variety of bacterial species (staphylococci, streptococci, corynebacteria and others) have been cultured from the fluidof prostatitis. Benign prostatic enlargement, a common condition of oldermen, is not a precursor to cancer.

Researchers have recently cautioned men about taking excessiveamounts of zinc supplements, claiming that 100 milligrams of zinc dailycould more than double the risk of prostate cancer. Zinc is normally foundin the prostate, and some nutritionists have previously recommended zincsupplementation as beneficial for prostate health. DHEA, another popularsupplement, is also considered suspect because of the fear that increasedlevels of testosterone seen with the daily intake of DHEA pills couldstimulate the growth of a tiny prostate tumour that would otherwise haveremained dormant.

Prostate cancer and infection with "acid-fast" bacteriaThe idea that bacteria could cause cancer has been taboo in medical

science for a century. However, over the years a number of viruses (the

cytomegalovirus, human papilloma virus, variousherpes viruses and the hepatitis B virus) have beensuspected of causing or complicating prostate cancer.Despite the scientific prejudice against cancer-causingbacteria, I have reported on bacteria in various formsof cancer.

In December 2003, my partner was diagnosed withprostate cancer. At the time, he was a 68-year-oldItalian-American in goodhealth. His PSA wasabnormally elevated to 9.0, anda digital rectal examination bythe urologist revealed ahardened area on the right sideof the gland. Biopsies of theprostate gland were positivefor cancer. A prostatectomy, along with removal of thesurrounding lymph nodes, wasperformed in March 2004.Microscopic examination ofthis tissue showed the cancerentirely confined to the prostate, with no cancerousnodes.

In view of my previous cancer microbe studies, Irequested that the pathologist supply me with a Fite-stained tissue section of his prostate cancer. The Fitestain is an "acid-fast" stain traditionally used for thedetection of acid-fast tuberculosis-type bacteria. It isthe essential staining technique required for thedetection of cancer-associated bacteria. One of the

reasons physicians do not identify bacteria in cancer isthat the haematoxylin-eosin tissue stain, routinelyemployed by pathologists, does not adequately staincancer microbes.

Having retired from dermatologic practice a decadeearlier, I had never had the opportunity to studyprostate cancer and I was curious to see if bacteriacould be identified in this disease. Because bacteria

are small, it is necessary tostudy the tissue at the highestpossible magnification (1,000times) of the light microscope, using oil immersion.

A thorough search of thecancerous tissue revealedeasily detectable bacteria, particularly in the connectivetissue areas adjacent to themain tumour mass. Themicrobes were observed intightly packed clusters of round"coccoid" forms seemingly

embedded in a matrix (figure 1). Sometimes a cellnucleus could be clearly observed with the coccoidforms surrounding it (figure 2). Extracellular forms—forms that escape from the tight bacterial clusters andscatter in the tissue—were also visible. The size ofthese round coccoid forms varied. Most were the sizeof ordinary staphylococci. Some were so tiny theywere barely visible.

Cancer microbes have an affinity for collagen—theconnective tissue "glue" protein thathelps hold together the cells andtissues of the body. Could bacteriain prostate collagen cause thebiochemical elevation of the proteinantigen detected by the PSA test?By definition, antigens are oftendefined as foreign substancesproduced by bacteria and viruses. In 2004, my research showingmicrophotographs of prostatecancer bacteria was posted on thewebsite of the Journal of IndependentMedical Research (www.joimr.org).

Confirmation of prostate cancerbacteria

To my knowledge, no tissueinvestigations into bacteria as acause of prostate cancer were everperformed during the entire 20thcentury. However, over the past fewyears, several investigators haveconfirmed the presence of bacteria(particularly a species calledPropionibacterium acnes) in prostate

tissue and in culture. All of them have suggested(despite the taboo against "cancer microbes") thatbacteria might be implicated in prostate cancer.

In 2005, an Australian team headed by Dr RonnieCohen was the first to culture bacteria from prostatecancer and to suggest that inflammation caused bythese bacteria might lead to cancerous changes. Alater study, co-authored by Cohen, examined antibodylevels to P. acnes bacteria. Theresearchers concluded thathigh antibody levels might becorrelated with prostatedisease, cancer and evenbenign enlargement of theprostate gland, a commonfinding in older men.

In 2007, the Australian teamjoined with Swedishresearchers, headed by Dr OlegAlexeyev, to study prostatebacteria further. Using specialmicroscopic techniques, theydemonstrated intracellular forms of P. acnes and"biofilm-like aggregates" of bacteria in tissue sectionsof prostate cancer, similar in appearance to thosebacteria I previously reported. They concluded that P.acnes bacteria could establish a persistent infection inthe prostate gland, which could contribute toenlargement and prostate cancer. Cancer and the cancer microbeThe most vocal proponent of bacteria as a cause of

cancer was the late VirginiaLivingston, MD (1906–1984). In1950, Virginia Wuerthele-CaspeLivingston and her colleagues wrotea paper entitled "Cultural Propertiesand Pathogenicity of CertainMicroorganisms Obtained fromVarious Proliferative and NeoplasticDiseases", which was published inThe American Journal of the MedicalSciences. The characteristics of thecancer microbe in blood, tissue andculture were described in detail. The cancer bacteria were filterablethrough a laboratory pore designedto hold back bacteria. Thisindicated that the bacteria hadsmaller elements which were "virus-sized". In laboratory culture, theseviral-like forms were able to revertto the size of conventional bacteria.

The microbe was characterised aspleomorphic; that is, having morethan one form and size. The

smallest forms of the organism were virus-like, and thelarger bacterial forms were comparable to whatbacteriologists call "mycoplasma", "L-forms" and "cell-wall-deficient forms". Livingston believed theorganism was closely related to the "acid-fast"mycobacteria. Tuberculosis (TB) and leprosy are twowell-known diseases caused by species ofmycobacteria. She was the first to show that the "acid-

fast" staining method (used todetect TB bacteria) wasessential to colour and identifythe cancer microbe in tissueand in culture.

In a series of paperspublished in the 1950s, 1960sand 1970s, Livingston andmicrobiologist EleanorAlexander-Jackson along withcell cytologist Irene Diller andchemist Florence Seibert(famous for developing thetuberculosis skin test) all

continued important cancer microbe research showingthe characteristic "connective tissue parasite" ofcancer—the germ that could be found inside the cell(intracellular) and outside the cell (extracellular) in allcancers. Livingston always claimed the microbe hadan affinity for collagenous (connective) tissue. Thephotographs of bacteria presented here in prostatecancer confirm that.

Livingston believed the cancer microbe was presentin the blood, tissue, excreta and body fluids of allhuman beings. When the immune system was

and prostate cancer.

Page 20: Nexus 1603 - new times magazine

functioning normally, these microbes did not causedisease. But when tissue was damaged or weakened, these microbes became aggressive and pathogenic, producing inflammation and cancerous changes.According to Livingston, the cancer microbe isessential to our life biology. However, whenconditions are adverse, it emerges and reverts to itspathogenic form.

When Livingston died in 1990 at the age of 83, shewas widely regarded as a quack, particularly by theAmerican Cancer Society which claimed her cancermicrobe did not exist. A bulletin published by theNational Cancer Institute on 30 November 1990 stated:"There is no scientific evidence toconfirm Livingston's theories ofcancer causation."

Details of a century of cancermicrobe research can be found in mytwo books The Cancer Microbe (1990)and Four Women Against Cancer (2005);in Cell Wall Deficient Bacteria (1993) byLida Mattman, PhD; in Can BacteriaCause Cancer? (1997) by David Hess;and by Googling "cancer bacteria","cancer microbe" or "cancer-associated bacteria".

References and abstracts on mycancer microbe medicalpublications can be found at theNational Library of Medicine'sPubMed website (type in keywords "Cantwell AR" and "cancerbacteria"). In addition, my videolecture on the cancer microbecan be viewed online onyoutube.com.

Why does the medicalestablishment ignore cancermicrobe research?

Despite a century of crediblecancer microbe research by various scientists, themedical profession does not accept bacteria as a causeof cancer.

One exception is the 1982 discovery of certainbacteria (Helicobacter pylori) in the stomach that are nowaccepted as the cause of most stomach ulcers.Sometimes chronic ulcers can progress to gastriccancer and gastric lymphoma. This remarkablediscovery completely transformed our understandingof the microbiology and pathology of the humanstomach. H. pylori can be found in normal as well asdiseased stomachs. Prior to this discovery, physiciansdid not believe that bacteria could thrive in the acidenvironment of the stomach.

Although physicians easily accept the idea ofinvisible viruses in cancer, they seem unable to

conceive of a microscopically visible bacterial agent incancer. Undoubtedly, the acceptance of cancer as abacterial infection would put cancer research andtreatment into a tailspin because the alleged benefitsof radiation and chemotherapy would have to be re-evaluated as a rational treatment for bacterialinfection. Because current antibiotics cannot rid thebody of cancer-causing bacteria, this would necessitatethe development of new cancer or immunologictherapies designed to combat these infectious agents.

Cancer microbe research could be perceived as athreat to lucrative prostate cancer treatment. Forexample, IMRT (intensity-modulated radiation therapy)

has become standard procedure inthe non-surgical treatment ofprostate cancer. The cost is aroundUS$42,000. If prostate cancerbacteria were to be accepted as acause of this cancer, this radiationtreatment would need to be re-evaluated, particularly whenradiation is not considered an idealtreatment for "infection" withbacteria.

As a retired physician and cancermicrobe researcher, I will continue tobug (pun intended) my colleagues to

consider bacteria as a plausiblecause of cancer. "Research"means to search again. Aftermany decades of failure touncover a cause for prostatecancer, surely it is time for areappraisal of bacteria that canbe easily identifiedmicroscopically in this dreadeddisease of older men, using theappropriate methods. ∞

A True Superfood

Since the dawn of shamanic healing over 50,000 years ago, mankindhas searched for healing ingredients to concoct the ultimatepanacea—a cure-all. One of the most sought-after ingredients was

Cordyceps, a substance so revered that it was exclusively reserved for use byroyalty in ancient China. Chemical analyses have shown that its allegedlyremarkable properties are much more than superstition or mere folklore.

Cordyceps sinensis is a new generation of mushroom being used by thepharmaceutical industry and also as a dietary supplement amongst moreinformed consumers seeking alternatives to the more conventionaltreatments for cancer and AIDS as well as a wide range of other health andimmune system issues.

Cordyceps is considered a "food" by the US Food and Drug Administration(FDA) and is classified as "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS). A growingnumber of researchers now consider it to be a "superfood" that can beincluded in almost every diet. So why are these rediscovered mushroomsnow regarded as superfoods?

These medicinal mushrooms are extremely high in both beta-glucans,which have been shown to be useful in cancer therapies, andpolysaccharides. Polysaccharides are long sugar chains with many oxygensections within them. As these sugars are broken down by the body, theoxygen molecules are released and absorbed on a cellular level. We knowthat all forms of cancer cannot exist in an oxygen-rich environment andthat without proper oxygen levels the body is left to fall into degenerativestates that encourage cancer, heart disease, immune disorders anddiabetes, and also allow many viral diseases such as hepatitis C, Lyme'sdisease and many others to flourish.

The key is how to deliver oxygen to the body on a cellular level. This hostof pharmaceutical mushrooms includes such well-known products asReishi, Maitake and Agaricus which are rich in beta-glucans, known sourcesfor oxygen. This list continues to grow, with clinical studies now includingmore than 70 different mushroom species. The most interesting one toemerge is Cordyceps sinensis, which grows at about 16,000 feet (4,877 metres)in Tibet.

Cordyceps sinensis increases ATP (adenosine triphosphate) levels in thebody by almost 28 per cent. ATP is the body's energy supply source—thebody's battery, so to speak—and is required for all enzyme processes. It isalso now believed that ATP is where cold-fusion ("Brown's gas") processesoccur in the body on a molecular level. Although the concept ofmolecular-level cold fusion is not the subject of this article, I believe this isthe root of biological energy exchanges, which will be explored in futurewritings. The impact on the energy state alone would make this mushrooma true superfood, but there is much more to be shared.

What makes Cordyceps important for use with canceris that it contains beta-glucans and polysaccharides. As the sugars break down, the numerous oxygenmolecules are released on a cellular level, the resultbeing that cancerous materials present areimmediately destroyed. Cordycepin, one of the targetcompounds (nucleosides), inhibits the DNA repairmechanism and is probably responsible for its anti-viral (HIV) effects.

Full-spectrum ChemistriesThere is a lot of confusion today in the field of

pharmaceutical mushrooms as towhat form of mushroom product isthe best for use. There are variouscomponents of the mushroom whichhave been used as separatedcompounds. Is it the fruit-body, themycelium or an extract standardisedfrom some particular compoundwhich is responsible for themushroom's properties? Thisquestion is not as straightforward asit seems.

Fruit body. This is the mushroomthat you see above the ground. It isthe spore- producing portioninvolved with reproduction.Basically, the fruit body isequivalent to the flower of aplant. Fruit bodies only form inresponse to some stress fromthe environment.

Mycelium. This is the growthform of the organism under theground where all of the lifeprocesses occur: growth, feeding, competing for survivaland some forms of reproduction.

Broth. In cultivatedmushroom products, the mycelium can be growneither by fermentation, in a tank full of liquid "broth",or on a solid substrate of some material that is foundin the natural growth condition.

For the production of many mushroom-derived drugsand health supplements, the compounds are extractednot from the mycelium but from the broth in which themycelium is grown.

As an example, there are a number ofpharmaceutical drugs produced from the Shiitakemushroom: lentinan from the fruit body; LEM fromthe mycelium; and KS-2 from the residual culturebroth, an extracellular compound.

To extract lentinan from Shiitake mushrooms is apretty straightforward chemical process. But whatabout another compound present in Shiitake, callederitadenine?

This compound is useful in the treatment of highcholesterol levels, while lentinan is used for thetreatment of cancer.

If you extract Shiitake compounds using hot waterand then use alcohol to precipitate out thepolysaccharide fraction, the lentinan is concentratedand the resultant product is effective for cancertreatment or immune system stimulation. However, with this process you lose the eritadenine, and theextract has no effect on blood cholesterol.

Consequently, even though a raw Shiitake productshows great effectiveness in treating high cholesterol,

the "standardised extract" availabletoday is useless for this purpose.

So, what is the more valuableproduct: the raw, full-spectrumShiitake or the standardised extract? The answer is neither, or both. Itreally depends on what you arehoping to achieve with thesupplement.

For general health-supplementusage, the best product is the onethat has the greatest effectivenessover a broad range of conditions. Inthis example, it makes much more

sense to use a full spectrum ofproducts—the fruit body, mycelium and broth.

German precision created theconcept of standardised extracts. But now we are beginning torealise that mixed chemistriesplay a more important role inthe effectiveness of howunrelated chemistries mightproduce specific results. It is acomplex form that is still notcompletely understood butproduces clinical results not

available with standardised extracts. Most pharmaceutical mushrooms are utilised as

extracts for their most potent and most successfulproducts and formulas. But these are very specific andtargeted extracts, made for the particular purpose ofconcentrating specific compounds. Additionally, it isbecause these chemical compounds are produced asextracts that the pharmaceutical medicine industry isallowed to hold patent rights to them. Natural foodscannot be patented.

There are two general categories of bio-activecompounds found in pharmaceutical mushrooms:

1. The polysaccharides, which comprise most of themedicinal compounds, are soluble in hot water andnot in alcohol. The immuno-stimulant type of actionso well known in mushrooms is from this class ofcompounds. If you are looking for immuno-

produced as extracts that the pharmaceutical

medicine industry is allowed to holdpatent rights to

them.

modulation action, then don't use alcohol extracts asthey will not be effective.

2. The nucleosides, another class of compounds, aresoluble in non-polar solvents like alcohol and hexane. These compounds are usually smaller in molecular sizeand are more specific in their bio-activity comparedwith polysaccharides. Nucleosides, deoxynucleosidesand most of our antibiotics and antimicrobials fall intothis category.

Health Benefits and Clinical StudiesThe medicinal properties of Cordyceps are remarkable. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the main use

of Cordyceps has been in the treatment of asthma andother bronchial conditions. Modern research nowconfirms the efficacy of theseancient uses.

Much of what is known in thewestern world about Cordycepssinensis is due to the work of DrGeorges Halpern, a physicianand professor emeritus withthe University of Hong Kongand the author of severalbooks about Cordyceps.

One of the highlights ofmodern research has been thediscovery of new antibiotics inthis mushroom. One of these, cordycepin, is very effective against all sorts of bacteriathat have developed, or are developing, resistance toother, more common antibiotics (such as penicillin, afungus product!).

Cordyceps is especially effective against tuberculosis, leprosy and human leukaemia, as shown in many trialsin China, Japan and elsewhere.

Some additional health benefits of Cordyceps areoutlined below.

• Enhances physical staminaThe best-known medicinal action of Cordyceps is in

the increase of physical stamina. In 1993, the ChineseNational Games brought this mushroom to theattention of the world's sporting authorities. A groupof nine women athletes who had been taking Cordycepsshattered nine world records.

There have been many reports of amazingimprovements in performance in various sports due tothe intake of Cordyceps.

There has even been talk of banning Cordyceps fromsporting events because it may give an unfairadvantage to those who can get it!

Most professional athletes who use it now areunwilling to admit that they do, due to the possibilitythat some sporting authority will outlaw its use. In theother direction, the Canadian Olympic Committee hastaken an official stand on Cordyceps, ruling that it isallowed in professional competition.

Clinical research has shown that Cordyceps useincreased cellular bio-energy—ATP (adenosinetriphosphate)—by as much as 55 per cent. Increasedsynthesis of ATP and faster energy recovery have beenreported. It would seem that Cordyceps improves theinternal balance mechanism, thus making theutilisation of oxygen more efficient. These propertiesmay account for the overall physical enhancement, theextra endurance and the anti-fatigue effects that areseen in humans using Cordyceps.

• Improves respiratory functionSeveral scientific studies have demonstrated the

benefits of Cordyceps sinensis in alleviating the symptomsof various respiratory illnesses including chronicbronchitis and asthma.

• Increases oxygenabsorption

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study with 30 elderlyvolunteers, Cordyceps wasshown to improve significantlythe maximum amount ofoxygen these people were ableto assimilate.

Chinese studies ofcardiovascular illnesses haveshown that ethanol extracts ofCordyceps mycelia and Cordycepsfermentation solutions caused

a change in the biological action that allowed for anincrease in cellular oxygen absorption by up to 40 percent. In addition, studies have shown the effect ofthese compounds in relieving chronic obstructivepulmonary disease.

• Improves heart functionNumerous studies have demonstrated the benefits

of Cordyceps sinensis in treating heart rhythmdisturbances such as cardiac arrhythmia and chronicheart failure.

• Helps maintain healthy cholesterol levelsFour studies have demonstrated that Cordyceps sinensis

helped to lower total cholesterol by 10–21 per cent andtriglycerides (neutral fats) by 9–26 per cent, and at thesame time helped to increase HDL ("good") cholesterolby 27–30 per cent.

• Improves liver functionsCordyceps sinensis has been shown to improve liver

functions as well as help with cirrhosis, sub-chronicand chronic hepatitis and related liver diseases whichare more prevalent than most people think..

The liver is the living filter of the body, cleaning theblood and all other fluids of impurities. There is noway for you to survive, much less feel healthy, withouta functioning liver.

Clinical trials with Cordyceps supplement involving 33patients with hepatitis B and eight patients withcirrhosis of the liver showed a 71.9 per centimprovement on the thymol turbidity test and a 78.6per cent improvement on the SGPT test. These areenzyme tests showing changes in liver functions.

• Improves kidney diseaseA Chinese study has shown a 51 per cent

improvement in chronic kidney disease after only onemonth of dietarysupplementation withCordyceps.

• Reduces tumour sizeSeveral clinical studies with

cancer patients have beenconducted in China and Japan, using a therapeutic dose of 6.0grams of Cordyceps per day.

In one study with 50 lungcancer patients who wereadministered Cordyceps inconjunction withchemotherapy, tumoursreduced in size in 46 per centof patients. A study involving cancer patients withvarious types of tumours found that Cordyceps sinensisextract (6.0 grams/day for over two months) improvedsubjective symptoms in the majority of patients.White blood cell counts were maintained and tumoursize was significantly reduced in about half of thepatients.

Researchers in Japan reported that Cordycepsenhances the general reactivity of the immune systemin individuals with cancer. To discover this, theysubcutaneously injected mice with cancerous(lymphoma) cells and then orally administeredCordyceps. This led to a reduction of tumour size andprolonged life. Cordyceps also improved the antibodyresponses in these studies.

• Enhances immunity and T-cell productionCordyceps has been found to enhance "natural killer"

(NK) cell activity, thus increasing T-cell productionwhich results in expanded muscle mass. Muscle poweris improved with the building of young, healthy cells.

Cordyceps effectively recharges the protective army ofNK cells. The body's ability to fight infections andtumours depends on the availability of NK cells. Theseare essential as the first line of defence for

maintenance of the body's protection mechanism, commonly known as the immune system.

Several scientific studies of Cordyceps have especiallyfocused on NK cells and Cordyceps' effect on them asthey relate to cancer formation. One in vitro studydemonstrated that Cordyceps significantly enhances NKcell activity in normal individuals as well as leukaemia-stricken people.

In a Chinese study, published in the Chinese Journal ofIntegrated Traditional and Western Medicine, naturalCordyceps enhanced the NK cell activity of normalpatients by 74 per cent and increased the NK activity ofleukaemia patients by 400 per cent. Similarimprovements of NK cell activities were found in largemelanoma tumours.

• Assists symptoms of ageingClinical research in controlled studies has revealed

that elderly patients suffering from fatigue and senility-related symptoms reportedrelief in these areas after usingCordyceps for 30 days. Theirfatigue was reduced by 92 percent, their feeling of cold by 89per cent and their dizziness by83 per cent. Patients withrespiratory/breathing problemsfelt physically stronger andsome individuals were able tojog up to 600 feet (183 metres).

• Protects against free-radical damage

Several studies have shownthat Cordyceps sinensis gave

protection against the damage caused by free radicalsand had powerful anti-oxidant properties.

• Helps discomfort from tired legsVarious studies have shown that Cordyceps sinensis

improved the flow of blood in the body by relaxing thesmooth muscles of the blood vessels and allowingthem to expand, and also enhanced the functioning ofthe heart and lungs.

Cordyceps therefore prevents or reduces thecontraction of blood vessels which interferes withblood flow in the legs—the main cause of tired legs.

• Improves sexual functionThree separate Chinese double-blind, placebo-

controlled studies with over 200 men with "reducedlibido and other sexual problems" showed remarkablysimilar results. On average, 64 per cent of theCordyceps-users reported significant improvement at theconclusion of the experimental period compared with24 per cent of the placebo group.

In another double-blind, placebo-controlled studyconducted with 21 elderly women with similarcomplaints, 90 per cent reported improvements oftheir condition following the use of Cordyceps, compared with none in the control group.

Page 27: Nexus 1603 - new times magazine

Cordyceps has been shown to improve libido andquality of life in men and women, fight infertility andincrease sperm count and survival. Clinical studiesinvolving 189 male and female patients with decreasedlibido and desire showed improvement of symptoms in66 per cent of cases. A

double-blind study conducted by the Institute ofMateria Medica in Beijing showed an 86 per centimprovement in female libido and desire. The mostdramatic physical proof came from a fertility studyinvolving 22 males which showed that, after eightweeks of taking a Cordyceps supplement, their spermcount increased by 33 per cent, their incidence ofsperm malformations decreased by29 per cent and their sperm survivalrate increased by 79 per cent.

• Reverses HIVIn a study in 2004 in Ghana, 3,000

early-stage HIV patients were given aformula with Cordyceps sinensis as aprimary ingredient. Beyond anyone'swildest dreams, at the end of sixmonths all 3,000 patients showed "nopresence in their blood of HIV".When an HIV–AIDS patient took theImmune-Assist drug for cancer, theirclinical picture improveddramatically in regard to the HIVinfection.

Immune Function, Anti-cancerResponse and DNA Repair

It has long been understoodthat the beta-glucan compoundsfound in many species ofmushroom significantly enhanceimmune function. This class ofcompounds is the most widelyprescribed class of anticancermedications in the world. Thepharmaceutical drugs lentinan,PSK and grifolan are examples ofthese compounds.

There is evidence of another mechanism at play inthe Cordyceps anti-tumour response besides the well-known immune modulation triggered by thepolysaccharide compounds. It is related to thestructure of at least some of the altered nucleosidesfound in Cordyceps, exemplified by the cordycepincompound (3'-deoxyadenosine).

This is a molecule almost identical to normaladenosine, with the exception that it is lacking anoxygen atom on the ribose portion of the molecule atthe 3' position.

The same lack of this 3' oxygen can be seen in otherCordyceps compounds such as dideoxyadenosine. Thelack of oxygen at this particular position is thought to

be important in a very specific way. The structure ofDNA depends on this oxygen to create the bondbetween adjacent nucleosides. This bond is betweenthe 3' and the 5' positions on the ribose portions of thenucleosides, effectively forming the "ladder structure"that holds the DNA together.

In the replication of any cell, the first step is theseparation of the DNA molecule down the middle, likeunzipping, between the pairs of complementarynucleosides.

The next step is the insertion, one at a time, of new-complement nucleosides. These form hydrogen bondsbetween the complement pairs and phosphate–sugar

bonds between the 3' and 5'positions at the outside edge of themolecule, which is the riboseportion.

The synthesis of the new DNAmolecules proceeds with thesequential insertion of new-complement nucleosides one at atime into the newly forming DNAmolecule until the original strand ofDNA is replicated twice, each ofthese strands being an exact copy ofthe original and forming the geneticcode for a new generation of cells. This synthesis continues to proceed

with the insertion of each newnucleoside, unless a 3'-deoxyadenosine (cordycepin)molecule is pulled in.

When this happens, there is nooxygen present at that vitalposition to form the 3'–5' bond, and the replication of the newDNA molecule stops. Once theDNA synthesis stops, the cellcannot continue to divide andno new cell is formed. (Innormal mammalian cells, thisinsertion of the de-oxygenatedadenosine is of little importance,

as healthy cells have an inherent DNA repairmechanism.)

When this sort of error occurs, the altered nucleoside(the cordycepin) is removed from the string ofnucleosides and a new segment of adenosine isinserted. However, by their very nature, cancer cellshave lost this DNA repair mechanism. (If they couldcorrect their DNA errors, they would not be cancercells.)

Most bacteria and all viruses (including the humanimmunodeficiency virus, HIV) lack this DNA repairmechanism.

When we look at the rate at which cancer cellsreplicate, it is clear how this mechanism could exert a

mechanism at play in the Cordyceps

anti-tumourresponse besides the well-known

immune modulationtriggered by thepolysaccharide compounds.

Page 28: Nexus 1603 - new times magazine

significant anti-tumour response. For example, anormal healthy breast tissue cell has an average lifespan of about 10 days, after which it reproduces and anew cell is formed. But breast cancer cells multiplymuch more quickly than healthy cells, reproducing onaverage every 20 minutes. This means that breastcancer cells replicate about 750 times more quicklythan the surrounding healthy tissue. If the cordycepinwere equally toxic to both types of cells, it would bekilling off the cancer cells 750 times faster than thehealthy cells. But because of that DNA repairmechanism in the healthy cells, cordycepin appearsnot to interfere with the healthy cellreplication, and the tumour-cell killrate is actually much higher than the750:1 ratio.

The same sort of DNA interruptionmechanism is also responsible for theanti-tumour effects of some otherchemotherapy agents. This samemechanism of DNA synthesisinhibition is probably the mechanismresponsible for the antiviral effectsseen with cordycepin.

ConclusionThe best-known medicinal action of

Cordyceps sinensis is the increase ofphysical stamina. Cordycepin isvery effective against all sorts ofbacteria that have developedresistance to other antibiotics.Cordyceps has been shown toimprove the internal balancemechanism, thus making theutilisation of oxygen moreefficient.

Numerous studies havedemonstrated the benefits ofCordyceps sinensis on heart rhythmdisturbances such as cardiac arrhythmias and chronicheart failure.

Four excellent studies have demonstrated thebenefits of Cordyceps sinensis in helping to lower totalcholesterol and triglycerides and to increase HDL("good") cholesterol.

Clinical studies involving male and female patientswith decreased libido have shown significantimprovements in symptoms. The most dramaticphysical proof has come from a male fertility study thatshowed that a Cordyceps supplement greatly increasedsperm count, decreased sperm malformations andimproved sperm survival rate after eight weeks of use.

These properties and others may account for theoverall physical enhancement, the added endurance, the libido-enhancing attributes and the anti-fatigueeffects seen in humans using Cordyceps sinensis.

Worldwide studies have shown that this unassumingfungus delivers even more potentially life-enhancingbenefits than claimed. This is a superfood which isjust beginning to make itself known in the westernmedical literature.

The reduction of this active fungal material to nano-particle size also has great promise, and furtherresearch work is being conducted which may lead toadditional patented medicines.

More importantly, the full-spectrum of compoundspresent in the fruit body, mycelium and broth of thenatural substance continues to prove once again that

ancient knowledge meets themodern test of science. ∞

If you were thinking that the only things we have to be concerned aboutinclude wars, famines and economic crashes, think again. Recentscientific discoveries are indicating that this next solar flare cycle couldbe powerful enough to disrupt our planet's entire electric grid. In this

report I document a number of changes taking place with the Earth'smagnetic field, the Sun and our solar system while explaining some of theconcerns that today's leading scientists have voiced. I also examine howhumankind may be affected energetically.

Our Planet's Magnetic FieldThe magnetosphere is a bubble of magnetism that surrounds the Earth

and protects us from solar wind. Fortunately, our planet's magnetic fielddiverts most particles into a circular path around the Earth. Like weatherpatterns found on Earth, solar wind patterns can change rapidly.

Luckily, our planet's magnetosphere quickly responds to the threat andabsorbs the impact, wiggling and jiggling in the process. Geophysicistscall this reaction a geomagnetic storm, but because of how it disrupts theEarth's magnetic field it could also be called electromagnetic pollution. This is when we see the Aurora Borealis in our night skies.

But strange things are happening in both outer and inner space. TheEarth's magnetic field has been weakening. This decrease actually began2,000 years ago, but the rate of decrease suddenly became much morerapid 500 years ago. However, in the last 20 years or so, the magnetic fieldhas become erratic.

Aeronautical maps of the world, which are used to allow aeroplanes toland using automatic pilot systems, have had to be revised globally inorder for the autopilot systems to work.

Now, NASA's five THEMIS spacecraft have discovered a breach in theEarth's magnetic field that is 10 times larger than anything previouslythought to exist. When this happens, solar wind can flow in through theopening to "load up" the magnetosphere for powerful geomagnetic storms.Exploring the mystery is a key goal of the THEMIS mission, launched inFebruary 2007.

The big discovery came on 3 June 2007, when the five probesserendipitously flew through the breach just as it was opening. Onboardsensors recorded a torrent of solar wind particles streaming into themagnetosphere, signalling an event of unexpected size and importance.

But the breach itself is not the biggest surprise. Researchers are evenmore amazed and baffled at the unexpected way it forms, overturning long-held ideas of space physics.

"At first I didn't believe it," said THEMIS project scientist David Sibeck ofthe Goddard Space Flight Center. "This finding fundamentally alters ourunderstanding of the solar wind–magnetosphere interaction."

"The opening was huge—four times wider than Earthitself," said Wenhui Li, a space physicist at theUniversity of New Hampshire, who has been analysingthe data. Li's colleague Jimmy Raeder, also of theUniversity of New Hampshire, said: "127 particles persecond were flowing into the magnetosphere—that's a1 followed by 27 zeros. This kind of influx is an orderof magnitude greater than what we thought waspossible."

Space physicists have long believed that holes in theEarth's magnetosphere open only in response to solarmagnetic fields that point south. The great breach ofJune 2007, however, opened in response to a solarmagnetic field that pointed north. To the laypersonthis may sound like a quibble, but to a space physicistit is almost seismic.

Unexpected Shield DropRegarding how our magnetic

field is changing, what isunderstood today in thescientific community is thatthe solar wind presses againstthe Earth's magnetospherealmost directly above theequator, where our planet'smagnetic field points north.Scientists previously believedthat if a bundle of solarmagnetism came along andpointed north, too, the twofields should reinforce oneanother, strengthening theEarth's magnetic defences and slamming the door shuton the solar wind.

In the language of space physics, a north-pointingsolar magnetic field is called a "northern IMF"(interplanetary magnetic field) and it is synonymouswith "shields up".

The big surprise is that when a northern IMF camealong, the shields went down. This has completelyoverturned many scientists' understanding of things. As researchers investigated the tear in the magneticfield, they discovered that 20 times more solar windpassed into the Earth's protective shield when themagnetic fields were aligned.

Northern IMF events don't actually triggergeomagnetic storms, Raeder noted, but they do set thestage for storms by loading the magnetosphere withplasma. A loaded magnetosphere is primed forauroras, power outages and other disturbances thatcan result when a CME (coronal mass ejection) hits. This means that the impact of solar flares is 20 timesas strong when the magnetic fields are aligned.

The Earth's and the Sun's magnetic fields will be insync at the peak of Solar Cycle 24, expected in 2012.This will cause an influx of solar particles. What the

scientists didn’t discuss is the impact on the humanbioelectrical system.

Earth's Magnetic Field Changes ClimateThe Earth's climate has been significantly affected by

the planet's magnetic field, according to a Danishstudy published in January 2009 which could challengethe notion that human emissions are responsible forglobal warming.

"Our results show a strong correlation between thestrength of the Earth's magnetic field and the amountof precipitation in the tropics," one of the two Danishgeophysicists behind the study, Mads FaurschouKnudsen of the geology department at AarhusUniversity in Denmark, told Videnskab journal.

The results of the study (also published in the USscientific journal Geology) lend support to acontroversial theory published a decade ago by Danish

astrophysicist HenrikSvensmark, who claimed thatthe climate is highly influencedby galactic cosmic ray (GCR)particles penetrating theEarth's atmosphere.

Geomagnetic Field ReversalAnother recent study

suggests that rapid changes inthe churning movement of theEarth's liquid outer core areweakening the magnetic field insome regions of the planet'ssurface.

"What is so surprising is that rapid, almost sudden, changes take place in the Earth's magnetic field," saidstudy co-author Nils Olsen, a geophysicist at theDanish National Space Center in Copenhagen.

The findings suggest similarly quick changes aresimultaneously occurring in the liquid metal, 1,900miles (3,000 kilometres) below the surface, Olsen said.

Fluctuations in the magnetic field have occurred inseveral far-flung regions of the Earth.

The changes "may suggest the possibility of anupcoming reversal of the geomagnetic field" said studyco-author Mioara Mandea, a scientist at the GermanResearch Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam.

Earth's magnetic field has reversed hundreds oftimes over the past billion years, and the processcould take thousands of years to complete.

The decline in the magnetic field is also opening theEarth's upper atmosphere to intense charged-particleradiation, according to scientists.

Cosmic Rays Slam the EarthAn international team of researchers has discovered

a puzzling surplus of high-energy electronsbombarding Earth from space. The source of these

Page 33: Nexus 1603 - new times magazine

cosmic rays is unknown, but it must be close to thesolar system and could be made of dark matter. Theresults were reported in the 20 November 2008 issue ofthe journal Nature.

"This is a big discovery," said co-author John Wefel ofLouisiana State University. "It's the first time we'veseen a discrete source of accelerated cosmic raysstanding out from the general galactic background."

To study the most powerful and interesting cosmicrays, Wefel and colleagues spent the last eight yearsflying a series of balloons through the stratosphereover Antarctica. Their NASA-funded cosmic raydetector found a significant surplus of high-energyelectrons.

"The source of these exotic electrons must berelatively close to the solar system—no more than akiloparsec away," said co-author Jim Adams of theNASA Marshall Space Flight Center.

Galactic cosmic rays are subatomic particlesaccelerated to almost light- speed by distantsupernovae explosions and other violent events. Theyswarm through the Milky Way, forming a haze of high-energy particles that enter the solar system from alldirections.

Cosmic rays consist mostly of protons and heavieratomic nuclei with a dash of electrons and photonsspicing the mix. Why must the source be nearby?According to Adams: "High-energy electrons loseenergy rapidly as they fly through the galaxy. They giveup energy in two main ways: (1) when they collide withlower-energy photons, a process called inverseCompton scattering; and (2) when they radiate awaysome of their energy by spiraling through the galaxy'smagnetic field."

High-energy electrons aretherefore local, but the researcherscannot pinpoint the source in thesky.

The Sun's Magnetic FieldThe Sun is a massive

electromagnetic broadcaster whichfloods the planets of the solarsystem with heat, light, UV radiationand electrically charged particles. The Sun itself has a magnetic field, and that magnetic field creates an"egg" around the solar system thatis known as the heliosphere. Theheliosphere is shaped like ateardrop, with the long, thin end ofthe drop pointing away from thedirection in which we're travelling.

Any changes that occur in or onthe Sun will eventually affect everyperson alive. The solar activityduring this last sunspot cycle was

greater than anything ever seen before. One study, authored by Dr Mike Lockwood and

colleagues from Rutherford Appleton Laboratory inChilton, UK, in 1999, investigated the Sun's activityover the previous 100 years. They reported that since1901 the overall magnetic field of the Sun has becomestronger by 230 per cent. Scientists do not understandwhat that means for us.

Some of the sunspot activity in this last cycle wasgreater than anything ever recorded before. Butscientists claim that they don't understand what thatmeans, either.

"Obviously, the Sun is Earth's lifeblood," saidRichard Fisher, Director of the Heliophysics Division atNASA. "To mitigate possible public safety issues, it isvital that we better understand extreme space weatherevents caused by the Sun's activity."

Solar Cycle 24According to NASA, the Sun is beginning another 11-

year cycle of activity. The Sun flips its magnetic poles every 11 years.

Considering that the Sun is to blame for someunfavourable climate changes on the Earth, thecoming decade could spell more trouble for our planet. The years ahead could be intense.

Jimmy Raeder explained: "We're entering Solar Cycle24. For reasons not fully understood, CMEs in even-numbered solar cycles (like 24) tend to hit Earth with aleading edge that is magnetized north. Such a CMEshould open a breach and load the magnetospherewith plasma just before the storm gets underway. It'sthe perfect sequence for a really big event."

Solar-source magnetic flux and sunspot numbers

Page 34: Nexus 1603 - new times magazine

Every 10–11 years, the number of sunspots found onour closest star rises from zero (as it was in 2008) to ahigh of over four hundred. While the sunspotsthemselves don't affect Earth, the solar flares andother disturbances emanating from our Sun duringincreased sunspot activity result in an increasednumber of particles (electrons and protons) andharmful light radiation (ultraviolet rays and X-rays),known as solar wind. If it weren't for the Earth'sprotective magnetic field and atmosphere, thisbombardment of particleswould burn us to a crisp.

Sunspot Cycle 24, expectedto peak around 2012, could beone of the strongest incenturies. It will be 30–50 percent stronger than the last oneand begin as much as a yearlate, according to abreakthrough forecast using acomputer model of solardynamics developed byscientists at the US NationalCenter for AtmosphericResearch (NCAR). Predicting the Sun's cyclesaccurately, years in advance, will help societies plan foractive bouts of solar storms, which can slow satelliteorbits, disrupt communications and bring down powersystems.

The scientists have confidence in the forecastbecause, in a series of test runs, the newly developedmodel simulated the strength of the past eight solarcycles with more than 98 per cent accuracy. Theforecasts are generated in part by tracking thesubsurface movements of the sunspot remnants of theprevious two solar cycles.

Solar Cycle 25 The Great Conveyor Belt is a massive circulating

current of fire (hot plasma) within the Sun. It has twobranches, north and south, each taking about 40 years

to perform one complete circuit.Researchers believe the turning ofthe belt controls the sunspot cycle, and that's why the slowdown isimportant.

"Normally, the conveyor beltmoves about one metre persecond—walking pace," said NASAsolar physicist David Hathaway."That's how it has been since thelate 19th century."

In recent years, however, the belthas decelerated to 0.75 m/s in thenorth and 0.35 m/s in the south.

"We've never seen speeds so low,"Hathaway added.

According to theory and observation, the speed ofthe belt foretells the intensity of sunspot activityapproximately 20 years into the future. A slow beltmeans lower solar activity; a fast belt means strongeractivity.

"The slowdown we see now means that Solar Cycle25, peaking around the year 2022, could be one of theweakest in centuries," said Hathaway.

Solar Activity's Impact on EarthThe first instruments to

measure solar flare activitymade their appearance 440years ago. They showed thatour nearest star treats theEarth to more than just solareclipses. Sunspots, solarflares, faculae and otherphenomena affect everythingon the Earth from atmosphericevents to human behaviour. These phenomena are knowncollectively as solar activity. This activity, expressing itself

through bursts of solar radiation, magnetic storms orfiery flares, can vary in intensity from very low to verystrong. It is the storms that pose the greatest dangerto civilisation.

On 28 August 1859, polar lights glowed andshimmered all over the American continent asdarkness fell. Many people thought their city wasaflame. The instruments used to record this magneticfluctuation across the world went off their scales.Telegraph systems malfunctioned, hit by a massivesurge in voltage. It was perhaps the worst solar stormin the past 200 years. Its results for humankind weresmall because civilisation had not yet entered a high-tech phase of development. But with the advent ofmodern power grids and satellites, much more is atrisk. Had something similar happened in our nuclearspace age, destruction would have been catastrophic.

34 • NEXUS www.nexusmagazine.com APRIL – MAY 2009

NASA is now sounding analarm because the NorthAmerican continent is so

close to the north magneticpole and is the most

vulnerable to solar activity.

Sunspot numbers and cycles

Page 35: Nexus 1603 - new times magazine

According to scientific data, storms of such sizeoccur about once in five centuries. But events withhalf the intensity happen every 50 years. The last onetook place on 13 November 1960 and disturbed theEarth's geomagnetic fields, upsetting the operation ofradio stations.

Now, our dependence on radio-electronic devices isso immense that increased solar activity could disablelife-support systems all over the world, and not onlyon the surface. Poor space weather makes all orbitalsystems malfunction. A heavy solar storm can causedisruption to space-based navigation systems.

NASA is now sounding an alarm because the NorthAmerican continent is so close to the north magneticpole and is the most vulnerable to solar activity. Astudy by the Metatech Corporation revealed that animpact similar to that of 1859 would incapacitate theentire electricity grid in North America. Even therelatively weak magnetic storm of 1989, provoked bysolar activity, caused an accident at a Canadian hydro-electric power plant that left six million people in theUnited States and Canada without electric power fornine hours.

A study by the US National Academy of Sciences alsooutlines grim possibilities on Earth for a worst-case-scenario solar storm. Modern power grids are sointerconnected that a big space storm—the typeexpected to occur about once a century—could causea cascade of failures that would sweep across theUnited States, cutting power to 130 million people ormore in this country alone, the new report concludes.Such widespread power outages, though expected tobe a rare possibility, would affect other vital systems.

"Impacts would be felt on interdependentinfrastructures with, for example, potable water

distribution affected within several hours; perishablefoods and medications in about 12–24 hours; andimmediate or eventual loss of heating/air conditioning, sewage disposal, phone service, transportation, fuelresupply and so on," the report states.

Outages could take months to fix, banks might close, and trade with other countries might halt.

"Emergency services would be strained, andcommand and control might be lost," according to theresearchers, led by Daniel Baker, director of theLaboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at theUniversity of Colorado in Boulder.

Solar Cycles and Human BehaviourCould cycles of war and peace be tied to cycles of the

Sun? Some researchers claim that geomagneticstorms affect brain waves and hormone levels, causinga number of different reactions, predominately inmales. While a few women may also experiencechanges during these storms, they generally seem lessaffected by the Sun's behaviour. Reacting to changinghormone levels, some men may become increasinglyirritable and aggressive, while others may insteadbecome more creative.

An increase in solar activity is found to increasepsychotic episodes in individuals who already sufferfrom unstable psychological states. While we mightrelate such behaviour to a full moon, in 1963 Dr RobertBecker and his colleague, Dr Howard Friedman, demonstrated that solar changes also lead to anoticeable increase in psychotic activity. Yet thesereactions are not simply isolated to a few particularlysensitive or unlucky individuals.

Evidence indicates that wars and internationalconflicts most often break out when sunspots are

rapidly forming or rapidly decaying,as these are times when there aremore intense geomagnetic storms. In addition, this increase in solaractivity correlates to periods ofmore accidents and illness as wellas an increase in crimes andmurders. The entire biosphere isaffected by this electromagneticpollution, and human behaviourseems to react accordingly.

Not all geomagnetic storms aredisruptive. But over time, theseextremes in solar activity may alsoaffect periods of Earthly conflict. The data on cycles of war and peaceextend back at least 2,500 years.

As early as 1915, some scientistswere beginning to recogniseconnections between solar activityand human behaviour. This workbegan with Russian scientist

Sunspot cycles from 1760

Page 36: Nexus 1603 - new times magazine

Alexander Chizhevsky, who observed a correlationbetween mass changes in human behaviour andsunspot cycles.

In the 1930s, Professor Raymond Wheeler, anhistorian at the University of Kansas, took thisobservation one step further. His research affordednumerical rankings to the severity of individual battlescorrelating to solar cycles. His data was statisticallyanalysed by Edward Dewey, who validated theexistence of these war cycles. Yet he was unable tomake a definite connection with sunspot cyclesbecause the data at that time was insufficient. In the1980s, with a more detailed analysis of Wheeler's data, the connection became clear.

Upon close examination of the data, it appears thatwe are beginning to discover a patternemerging where wars are most likelyto start at key points of the sunspotcycle. These are when geomagneticactivity is changing most rapidly onthe upsurge of solar activity or on thedownward part of the cycle whensunspots are rapidly diminishing. Inaddition, we can see how thisadversely affects physiologicalmechanisms such as brain rhythmsand hormonal levels.

In other words, wars could be a kindof mass psychosis. When we seethe connection to physicalmechanisms (such aselectromagnetic pollution), thisgives us some predictive insightinto when increased aggressionsare likely to start. Calculationsindicate that we're due to seeanother rise in intense solaractivity in less than two years'time, around 22 September 2010.NASA predicts that this activitywill peak in 2012.

Solar System ChangesThe atmospheres of five of the planets and the

Earth's moon are changing. The Earth's atmosphere inthe upper levels is forming HO gas that didn't exist inthe quantity that it does now. Scientists from theRussian Academy of Sciences say it's not related toglobal warming, CFCs or fluorocarbon emissions. Theyclaim that the atmospheres of Jupiter, Uranus andNeptune are also are changing.

The Martian atmosphere is getting sizeably thicker. In 1997, the Mars Observer probe lost one of its mirrors, causing it to crash. This happened because theatmosphere was about twice as dense as NASA hadcalculated.

The brightness and magnetic fields of the planets are

also changing. Venus is showing marked increases inits overall brightness. Jupiter's energetic charge hasrisen so high that there is actually a visible tube ofionising radiation that's formed between the surface ofJupiter and its moon Io. You can see the luminousenergy tube in photographs that have been takenrecently. Uranus and Neptune also are becomingbrighter.

The magnetic fields of Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptuneare changing. Jupiter's magnetic field has more thandoubled and Neptune's magnetic field is increasing. The Russians say that all three of these planets arebecoming brighter and their atmospheric qualities arechanging, but they do not explain what this means.

The Russians also report that Uranus and Neptuneappear to have had recent pole shifts. When the Voyager II space probe flewpast Uranus and Neptune, theapparent north and south magneticpoles were sizeably offset from wherethe rotational pole was in earlierrecordings. In one case it was 50degrees off, and in the other case thedifference was around 40 degrees.

This new information about thechanges in our solar system comes atan interesting time for our planet. It's possible that, for some time,

celestial events have beenplaying their part in shaping ourway of life on the planet, and thatthese changes we are now seeingwith our Sun, the solar systemand the Earth's magnetic fieldmay be the very things thattransform our world as we knowit into something new.

Only time will tell, but itappears that the future mayalready be here... ∞

Certain ancient ruins and monuments scattered throughout the worldstand haunting, mysterious, unexplained. Archaeologists write orspeak of them matter-of-factly, unemotionally, as if they presented no

problem. Dates and data are bandied about as if everything about theruins were cut and dried. However, the particular ruins discussed in thisarticle do present problems which to this day have not been solved. Abook could easily be written about any one of the ruins selected. Indeed,Posnansky wrote four large volumes on the archaeological, architecturaland archaeoastronomical aspects of Tiahuanacu alone. These ruinsdeserve much more attention than can be allowed here. I will barely touchon some of the enigmas involved with these sites.

The Baalbek Acropolis Located just across the Leontes mountains from Beirut, Lebanon, the

Baalbek acropolis stands as eloquent testimony of the skills and abilitiesof ancient man. The complex consists of several temples, now in ruins butbuilt originally by the Romans in the classical Corinthian style. The fourtemples are commonly known as the Temple of Jupiter, the Temple ofBacchus, the Temple of the Muses and the Temple of Venus. Several otherimpressive buildings are in evidence.

Sir Mortimer Wheeler described Baalbek as "one of the very greatmonuments of European architecture" (Ragette, 1980). Baalbek is trulyboth stupendous in its size and magnificent in its classical beauty. Anywords in the human vocabulary fall short of describing the wonder of thesebuildings. No doubt the megalithic platform—already in place when theRomans arrived on the scene—inspired the latter to stretch their abilitiesto the absolute limits (and they were extremely capable), for they did theirfinest and most magnificent work here at Baalbek.

It is the so-called Trilithon, the three mammoth stones incorporated intothe base of the platform, which commands our attention. Sir MortimerWheeler called them "the largest hewn stones in the world" (Ragette, 1980).Each of these measures about 64 feet in length, 12 feet in width and over14 feet in height, and weighs roughly 800–1,000 tons. A fourth stone, thelargest quarried stone in the entire world at almost 70 feet long andweighing 1,000–1,200 tons, still lies in the quarry over half a mile away(Mitchell, 1969).

These massive stones were somehow cut from the bedrock, moved half amile to the hilltop "acropolis" and placed into position some four coursesabove ground level atop other stones in the platform under construction. The course of stones lying immediately below the Trilithon contains atleast 24 stones, each 30–33 feet in length and weighing up to 450 tons. How were these gigantic stones moved from the distant quarry andpositioned so perfectly in place? The hill on which the acropolis was built

slopes away on all sides, making it a puzzle as to howcranes or any other lifting devices could have beenpositioned. There are no traces of ancient rampsleading to the acropolis.

Was this platform built by the Romans, as somearchaeologists believe, or was it already in place whenthe Romans arrived to take advantage of it? If notRoman, then how old is it? Even more puzzling is thefact that the megalithic portion of these ruins wasnever finished (Ragette, 1980). What halted theconstruction? Were the builders interrupted by sometremendous cataclysm? If the Romans really built theplatform, why couldn't they also move the monolithstill in the quarry? And if they "finished" the project bybuilding the beautiful temples, why would they havewasted the effort expended to cut out this hugemonolith, yet fail to use it?

In spite of what some "authorities" have indicated, the platform is thousands of years older than theRoman temple built upon it, as indicated by theextreme weather erosion exhibited on the surfaces—totally absent on the temple ruins above.

Early archaeologists were firmly of the opinion thatthe platform was far older than the Roman templebuilt upon it. Louis Félicien de Saukey, a Frencharchaeologist who visited Baalbek in 1851, believedthe platform to be pre-Roman. Even the famousscholar Ernest Renan (who intended to prove that theentire complex was Roman) came to agree with earlieropinion after investigating the ruins. Not only did

Renan clearly regard the weather erosion as a decidingfactor, he could find "no inherent relation" between theRoman temple and its megalithic foundation (Ragette,1980). His personal investigation resulted in acomplete reversal in his attitude towards themegalithic portion of these ruins.

"Modern" archaeologists have a hard time conceivingthat people living thousands of years before theRomans had the know-how to manipulate suchmassive stones, so they call on flimsy archaeologicaldata to convince themselves that it is all Roman.

The Egyptian Sphinx I have two old history books in my personal library

which have photographs of the Egyptian Sphinxcovered with sand: one in which the Sphinx is coveredup to the neck in sand (West, 1904), and another whichshows the Sphinx with the "chest" only partlyexcavated (Myers, 1904). People used to speculate asto what the body of the Sphinx might look like.

Of course, we now know that the body of the Sphinxis lion-shaped. But why a lion? John Anthony Westand Graham Hancock, who allege that the Sphinx mayhave been sculpted by non-Egyptians circa 10,500 BC,say there is good reason for this, and it doesn't haveanything to do with the historical Egyptians. Theyexplain that the Sphinx has been covered in sand formost of its long history, and why not? If it weren'tcontinually being cleared by modern workers, it wouldbe buried up to its neck in sand in less than 50 years.

The shifting sand has to be foughtback on almost a day-to-day basis. So, if it has been under the sand formost of its existence, why is it soweathered?

West called upon a colleague, DrRobert Schoch, professor of geologyat Boston University, to evaluate thenature of the erosion of the Sphinx. After careful investigation, Schochconcluded that the "weathering" ofthe Sphinx was done by water, rather than by wind and sand ascommonly believed; that it was firstcreated during the alluvial periodtoward the end of the ice age whenEgypt was experiencing copiousamounts of rainfall; and that theSphinx must be at least 7,000 yearsold—a conservative estimate by hisown admission (Schoch, 1992). Hepresented his findings to a largeforum of geologists, and hisconclusions that the weatheringpatterns evident on the Sphinx werethe result of water erosion, ratherthan wind, were generally accepted.

40 • NEXUS www.nexusmagazine.com APRIL – MAY 2009

Massive foundation stones form the base of the platform at Baalbek.

Page 41: Nexus 1603 - new times magazine

Egyptologists, however, were outraged—butEgyptologists have never welcomed geologists intotheir playpen. But what has all this to do with a lion?

It seems that West, following the work of an earlierresearcher, Robert Bauval, determined that in the year10,500 BC, on the day of the Spring equinox, theSphinx would be looking at its own counterpart in themorning sky, Leo the lion (West, 1979). In fact, theyspeculate, and rightfully so, that the original Sphinxalso had the head of a lion.

Colin Reader (1998), a London University geologist, noticed that the Egyptian "pharaoh-like" head we seetoday is much too small in proportion to the body ofthe Sphinx, and that, even though it has suffereddamage from vandals, the face has not eroded like thebody (if the head has alwaysbeen exposed to the weather, itshould be more eroded than thebody). Reader believes thehead of the original Sphinx wasre-sculpted from an originallion's head into an Egyptianpharaoh-style head(interesting!). Take away thepharaoh-style head and all"Egyptian" traits disappear.

Dr Schoch's conclusion as tothe age of the Sphinx issupported by two additionalstudies by competent geologists: Colin Reader (1998)and David Coxill (1998). All in all, the evidence seemsto point to a Sphinx originally sculpted by an unknownculture in the far distant past. Conservative estimatesplace it at the very beginning of predynastic times.

So why a lion? We know that the mean ("central")date of the age of Leo is 9880 BC. We also know thatthe geological epoch known as the Pleistocene cameto a close near that date; that a mass extinction ofanimals accompanied that end; that all UpperPaleolithic cultures ended on or near that date; thathuman population was decimated at that time; andthat this Great Event was accompanied by worldwidevolcanism (Hibben, 1946).

In addition, Manetho, the Egyptian priest-historian,recorded an abrupt interruption in his king-list at thattime. In other words, worldwide changes ofunimaginable magnitude happened during the age ofLeo—events which were centred close to the date of10,000 BC. This is reflected in the famous DenderaZodiac which begins with the sign of Leo. Did it heralda new beginning?

The appearance of the famous lion-sphinx in Egyptwas no mere astrological coincidence. I suspect thatthe ancients knew when the geological cycles were dueto occur, and that the Sphinx was a reminder of anevent large and significant enough to affect allmankind.

The Great Pyramid of Giza The Great Pyramid of Giza (or Gizeh) has always been

one of the most controversial ancient monuments inthe world. It is definitely different from all otherpyramids in Egypt. How so?

First of all, it is completely devoid of anyinscriptions. Second, the preciseness of itsproportions and orientation exceeds any of the others(even in the Giza group). Third, its chambers andpassageways are mostly above ground, and so everyblock had to be shaped before it was laid to allow forthe existence of these features—an extremely complexundertaking. The chambers and passageways of theother pyramids are simple in comparison and mostlybelow ground level, with a virtually solid pyramid

constructed above.Although certain other

pyramids were built as tombs(judging from inscriptionswithin the burial chambers),there is no indicationwhatsoever that the GreatPyramid was meant to be atomb. The so-called"sarcophagus" in the "King'sChamber" (so-named byEgyptologists) is the sum-totalof evidence for that theory.Calling it a "sarcophagus"

doesn't make it so. It could have had some initiatoryfunction or some other, yet unknown, purpose. Nomummies or human remains were ever found in theGreat Pyramid. Nor is there any evidence that it wasbuilt by Cheops (Khufu) that will stand up underscientific scrutiny.

The relationship of the Great Pyramid to Atlantishinges upon the date it was built. Since it is the mostperfect, and since Egypt is literally littered withpyramids which are less perfect, we, in our usual"onward and upward" frame of mind, assume the mostimperfect of them to be the earlier experimentalversions and the best constructed to be the latest.Quite the opposite is more likely. Having a near-perfect example before them, the Egyptians could havebeen trying to imitate what some advanced civilisationhad already accomplished, and the poorly constructedexamples found scattered all over Egypt may be theresult of their futile attempts to copy that hightechnology.

It is not widely known to non-professionals that alarge number of pyramids in Egypt were built after theGreat Pyramid; in fact, pyramid building went on forseveral hundred years afterward. Yet the fact is thatthey are all inferior both in size and quality of workmanship tothose of Giza. Why, once they had conquered all of theengineering problems involved, would the Egyptianshave suddenly reverted to such shoddy methods? This

fact in itself is supportive of the theory that theEgyptians never attained the level of expertise requiredto build the Great Pyramid; that in spite of their effortsto attain that level, they ultimately failed!

What other evidence is there to indicate that theaccepted dating scheme of the pyramids of Giza mightbe faulty? Joseph Jochmans offers the followingobservation. Recounting the usually acceptedsequence of Khufu, Khafre and Menkhare (all pharaohsof the Fourth Dynasty), he points out that the relativesizes of the pyramids belie the accepted order ofconstruction. Egyptologists tell us that the firstpyramid in the Giza group was built by Khufu. If the"onward and upward" viewpoint has any validity, wouldn't Khafre, who ruled next, have been expectedto build a bigger and betterone than his predecessor? Todo otherwise would haveseriously jeopardised hisstatus as pharaoh. Yet thesecond pyramid isconsiderably smaller than theGreat Pyramid. And shouldn'tMenkhare, the next pharaoh torule, have been expected tooutdo both his predecessors?Yet his is by far the smallest ofthe three, and the oneattributed to Khufu is thelargest. Although this ispatently contrary to humannature, we are asked to buyinto the accepted chronologyas if it were an establishedfact.

Robert Bauval and JohnAnthony West have a muchmore believable scenario, and theirs is based uponastronomical considerations (frequently used in theerection and orientation of ancient sacred structures)which can be checked and verified by modern science. They have learned that the various sizes andplacement of the pyramids of Giza reflect the exactpositions and luminosities of the stars in theconstellation of Orion. And we have learned fromancient Egyptian texts that Orion represented the deityOsiris, who ruled during the "reign of the gods" some15,000 years ago.

Just as 10,500 BC was found to be the most likelydate for the carving of the Sphinx, as if by magic itturns out that the orientation of the passageways ofthe Great Pyramid point to the very same date (Bauval,1994). This date was determined by means of modern-day computers which can literally "turn back the clock"and tell us where these constellations were in the skyon any given date. It happens that these fall within theera of Atlantis.

Tiahuanacu Tiahuanacu (Tiahuanaco or Tiwanaku) has been

called "the Baalbek of the New World". It is aprehistoric ruined city, apparently a harbour(Posnansky, 1945), located in the Bolivian Andes some15 miles from Lake Titicaca, 12,500 feet above sealevel! Why would a seaport be built more than twomiles above sea level? There are several theoriesabout this, one of which will be mentioned here.

The port area of Tiahuanacu (once thought to be aseparate ruin) is known as Puma Punku ("Port of thePuma"). In this area, close to the marks of ancientshorelines, enormous stone blocks are seeminglyscattered hither and yon like matchsticks—except thatthey weigh variously between 100 and 150 tons. One

block weighs an estimated440 tons! Geologists havedetermined that some of theblocks were brought fromquarries 200 miles away(Hemming 1979). Onewonders, of course, how suchblocks were quarried with nometal tools, how they weretransported to the buildingsite and how they wereassembled to form the piersand docks that once existed. But even more puzzling: howdid they get scattered aboutin such disarray? Did sometremendous geologicalcataclysm tumble thesegigantic monoliths into thishorrible disorder?

Then there is theceremonial centre with its

pyramids, temples, stone idols and the 10-ton Puertodel Sol ("Gateway of the Sun"). This large monolithwas originally found broken down the middle andalmost completely covered in solidified mud. Carvedfrom a single block of andesite, it is about 10 feet highand over 12 feet wide (Mason, 1968). Its upper portionis exquisitely carved with beautiful and intricatedesigns, including various symbols, condors, toxodonsand elephants, and with a human figure in the centrewhich has variously been thought to represent the SunGod, Viracocha, as well as the "Weeping God" (whatappear to be tears are depicted on both cheeks). He isholding a stylised staff in each hand, one of which mayrepresent bolts of lightning. The birdlike figuresflanking the central figure are unfinished, leading someof the early researchers (Mason, 1968) to think that thebuilders were interrupted (due to a catastrophe, perhaps?). The Gateway of the Sun now stands in thenorthwestern corner of the Kalasasaya Temple(Bennett, 1934).

The centre's several buildings are known as theKalasasaya Temple, the Semi-subterranean Temple, aso-called "Palace" and the Acapana Pyramid. A fewother buildings are in evidence. Many of the buildingblocks weigh close to 200 tons (Posnansky, 1945). TheAcapana Pyramid is a step pyramid and, like the GreatPyramid, is aligned perfectly with the cardinaldirections. It was originally covered with smoothandesite stone, only 10 per cent of which is still inplace. The ruinous state of the pyramid is due to stonepirates having carried off the stones for buildingmaterials in La Paz.

In the centre of the Semi-subterranean Temple was a24-foot-tall monolithic statue sculpted out of redsandstone. Although carvings cover much of its body, the lower half of the statue is covered with fish scales, reminding one of the Mesopotamian deity Oannes, who conveyed special knowledge to mankind. Thishuge monolith was unknown until uncovered duringBennett's excavations in 1934.It has since been carried to LaPaz and erected in a plaza(Mason, 1968).

Beside the much larger stonemonolith, Bennett found abearded statue. It has largeround eyes, a straight narrownose and an oval mouth, and itstands about seven feet tall.Rays of lightning are carved onthe forehead, andunidentifiable animals arecarved around the head. Hisarms are crossed over his ankle-length tunic, which isdecorated with pumas around the hem. Serpentsascend on each side, reminding one of Quetzalcoatl, the culture-hero of the Toltecs.

The conventional practice of dating Tiahuanacu isbased on carbon dating of numerous examples ofpottery, small statues and other artefacts. An obviousfact ignored by orthodox archaeologists is that it iscommon for late arrivals to be awed by old ruins(attributing their origin to gods or giants) and then toincorporate those very images in their own pottery, textiles, etc. It may be a colossal mistake to fuse thecultures into one, skewing dates of the megalithicstone ruins to match those of later artefacts.

As a result of these problems, several majorarchaeological authorities describe the dating of thebuildings and sculptures at Tiahuanacu as "insecure"(Mason, 1968; Willey, 1971; et al.). Stone ruins cannotbe carbon dated. The only way that stone buildingscan be dated is if, perchance, organic materialhappened to be mashed beneath stones during theactual erection of the edifices. Carbon-datingtechniques may then be applied to such recoveredorganic material.

The fact that some "renegades" do not apply carbondates to the stone ruins themselves is no indicationthat years of archaeological work is being ignored, assome complain. It is the depiction of extinct Pleistoceneanimals (not being addressed by most experts) whichprohibits the acceptance of the carbon dates usuallyapplied to the megalithic contructions. How can ananimal which has never been seen be carved ontomonuments? In addition, there are geological featureswhich are not being faced—and one dare not evenmention archaeoastronomy to archaeologists.

The most important edifice for dating purposes isthe Kalasasaya ("Place of Vertical Stones"). Ratherthan being in alignment with the cardinal directions, itis slightly offset to the northwest. In its southwesterncorner is a large statue called "The Idol", opposite theSun Gate. Knowing that many ancient culturesincorporated astronomical alignments into theorientation of their most sacred buildings, the

orientation of the Kalasasayacaught the attention ofengineer Professor ArturoPosnansky who was studyingthe ruins (Hancock, 1995).

Since the Earth is tilted onits axis in respect to the planeof the solar system, theresulting angle is known as theobliquity of the ecliptic. At present, our Earth is tilted at an angleof 23 degrees 17 minutes—butit was not always so. Earth'saxis oscillates between 22

degrees 1.0 minute to an extreme of 24 degrees 5.0minutes. One complete oscillation takes roughly41,000 years to complete. Posnansky had a number ofastronomers from highly respected institutions checkthis theory, and they concluded that the KalasasayaTemple indicated a tilt amounting to 23 degrees 8.0minutes 48 seconds (Posnansky, 1945). This seemedto point to a date circa 15,000 BC. Of course, theprofessional archaeologists went into orbit!

Such a date would explain the depiction of animalsthat have been extinct for 12,000 years. The fact thatTiahuanacu appears to include piers and docking areasfor hundreds of ships, yet is now elevated to analtitude of over two miles above sea level, has causedsome archaeologists to seek another purpose for thesefeatures.

Finally, the transportation of 400-ton stones overimmense distances could only have beenaccomplished by a civilisation (hitherto unknown) withadvanced technologies.

It's not out of the question that a worldwidecataclysm could create mountains almost overnight incertain places, thereby raising a seaport high above itsoriginal level. Salty Lake Titicaca itself seems to be a

slowly dissipating remnant of the ocean, its shorelinenow lying some 12 miles distant from the docks.Could this same geological upheaval have caused thePleistocene extinction, ended the ice age, decimatedPalaeolithic mankind and sunk Atlantis around 12,000years ago?

Cuzco and Sacsahuaman Cuzco was the capital city of the Inca Empire, and

Sacsahuaman seems to have been a place of refuge towhich the Inca people retreated when attacked. TheInca Empire had only been in existence about 100years or so before the Spanish conquest. So, whatcould these ruins have to do with Atlantis?

Even the non-professional visitor to any of theseruins will notice something which jumps out at firstglance: the beautiful ashlar blocks for which the Incasare so well known are always sitting directly atop muchlarger stones, known as polygonal-style (also calledmegalithic) constructions. Most archaeologists,American and Peruvian alike, agree that while the evenly laidashlars are classical Inca, thelarger, more complex, polygonal blocks belong to anearlier, undated, "megalithic"culture. The archaeologicaldating of the earlier megalithicruins "hangs in the air" (Mason,1968).

It is the "megalithic" parts ofthe ruins which are of interesthere. They have never beendated, and therefore no oneknows how long they had been there before theJohnny-come-lately Incas exploited their existence totheir own advantage. Most of the Inca-style ashlarsweigh two to three tons. The largest megalithic stoneat Sacsahuaman weighs in the neighbourhood of 300tons! A human being is dwarfed standing near one ofthese Cyclopean giants.

Another impressive fact concerning the megalithicstyle is that instead of cutting the stone entirelyregularly in shape, as in the Inca style, the megalithicbuilders chose to use very irregular shapes. Incredibly, one very large stone in particular has a total of 32different angles, yet it fits the stones around it soperfectly on every side that a knife blade cannot beinserted into the joints (Mason, 1968). And it doesn'tlook as if mortar has been used.

All the stones are slightly convex, giving them aslightly bulging appearance, and they are bevelled atthe edges, so they are not rough fieldstones. Theyhave been precision-cut and shaped to fit perfectly atall sorts of angles, and for a very good reason. TheAndes region is known for its numerous earthquakes, and these odd-shaped blocks make the walls virtually

earthquake proof, even though many are 60 feet (that'ssix storeys) high. Again, we have the same mysteriouscharacteristics of massive stone quarrying andtransportation (Hemming, 1979).

We also have the same problems in understandinghow anyone without cranes and pulleys, etc. (in otherwords, modern technology) could shape and lay theseblocks, often weighing over 100 tons, with suchprecision (Mason, 1968). Certainly the technologyused is beyond that of any South American cultureknown to us.

The Lixus Ruins Another interesting ruin is that of Lixus in Morocco,

North Africa. Lixus has been largely ignored byarchaeologists; only about 20 per cent of the ruinshave been excavated. There are no overseeingpersonnel or facilities anywhere nearby, and touristsare allowed to roam around the premises at will, picnicking, scattering trash and picking up anything

they see that looks interestingto them, which is a deplorablesituation.

Located between Rabat andTangier, and perched on ahilltop overlooking theAtlantic Ocean near themeanders of the LoukkosRiver, Lixus was once aprehistoric seaport. TheCarthaginians, building on topof ancient megalithic wallsand foundations, occupiedthis port around 800 BC, but

work needs to be done to determine the date of theolder ruins which already occupied this site.

According to Dr Gerald S. Hawkins of theSmithsonian Astronomical Observatory, the lower(megalithic) walls are carefully aligned with the Sun.In fact, the earlier name for the city was MaqomShemesh, or "City of the Sun" (Hawkins, 1973). TheNorwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl noticed themarked similarity of the polygonal style of masonrywith that of Peru and Bolivia. This same style ofmasonry can also be found in Andalusia in southernSpain and among submarine ruins along bothcoastlines of the Atlantic.

Stones of various shapes (polygonal) are mixed inwith more regular ones, which is one of the masonrytechniques used by the ancients to guard againstearthquakes. It seems that the jigsaw-puzzlearrangement of the stones breaks up the effect ofseismic waves coming from below (each sized stonewould respond only to its own frequency), with theresult that such walls are all but earthquake proof.

A WATER FUEL CELLBREAKTHROUGH

by Stephen Jones © 2009

Some years ago, while searchingthe Internet, I came across adevice that was claimed to be a

free-energy cell, known as "the JoeCell". Being sceptical, I read with agrin; and the more I read, the more Ibecame intrigued. It was claimedthat a person was trying to improvethe efficiency of his car engine withsome kind of water/steam cell whenhe stumbled across a configurationthat defied the laws of physics.Although he openly stated that hedid not know how the cell worked, itdid work. As he shared his findingswith others, interest in this newphenomenon grew.

The more I looked for information, the more I found. People hadwritten books and made movies onthese cells. Many claimed to havehad success in running their vehicleon the mysterious energy comingfrom the cell. Some called it "orgoneenergy" and others "zero-pointenergy". An entire industry andculture had grown around it, and yetso much seemed vague andunknown.

Despite being a sceptic, I decidedto build a cell of my own. Little did Iknow it would become an interestthat would span years and presentchallenges I had never imagined.

I started with a basic cellconfiguration that was presented onthe Internet. I purchasedcomponents from a local steelsupplier and a local hardware store. After going through the chargingstages as explained in a book I hadpurchased, I fitted the cell to myvehicle and in honesty did notexpect the engine to run on it; after

all, it would have been running onvapours from water.

It was claimed that when the cell ison your engine, you graduallyadvance the spark timing to around70 degrees before top dead centre(TDC). Any mechanic will tell youthat your car is not going to idle verywell, if at all, with the timing at 70degrees. In the case of my vehicle, Icould not physically turn thedistributor far enough but I couldturn it enough to know that theengine should have been pingingand running rough. The facts arethat it was not.

The other claim was that theengine could idle at a much lowerspeed than was normally possible, and it did. I was able to get theengine to run at only a couple ofhundred revolutions per minute(RPM) and as smoothly as it was atnormal idle speed. Now I wasmoving from being sceptical toamazed.

I also noted an increase in power. This was never measured in anyscientific manner, as I did not havethe ability to do so.

I often commuted up a long andvery steep hill and would alwayshold up traffic as I struggled to getup the hill in second gear. When thecell was on the vehicle, I went up thehill at the speed limit in third gearwith ease. I should point out thatthe petrol was also on. Theinformation I had read suggestedthat you run the vehicle on petroland periodically adjust the timinguntil the vehicle can run on the cellalone. I had not got to that point.

The effects of the cell were notconsistent, the idle speed of theengine was constantly changing, andmy cell design and installation werefar from what I had read to be

recommended by others. So, with many years of experience

in the design and manufacture ofcomputer control and interfacingequipment, I decided to build adevice that would monitor my celland control its charging. From thatconcept came a purpose-builtinterface and dedicated controlsoftware that ran my cell. This pavedthe way to my understanding of whatwas going on inside the cell andwhat was needed to make it workmore consistently.

I began to meet people involved incells who kept asking me the samequestions, so I decided to write abook and share what I knew.

In this book, I explain how I builtthe cell and how to process anywater, even tap water, to the pointwhere it is ideal for use in a cell. Ialso explain how to condition a cellfor charging and how to charge it;the process of how I modified myengine's ignition timing andelectrical system; my latest celldesigns and configurations; and thelatest methods of connecting a cellto an engine.

How the Engine WorksFirst I must clarify that although it

states "Free Energy" on the frontcover, this only refers to the fact thatyou do not pay for the energy. Theengine still uses energy, and you donot get out more than you put in,therefore it complies with Faraday’slaws. The energy is simply derived ina unique way from the componentsof the air going into the engine.

In the same way that it takes lessenergy to refine crude oil than isavailable from petrol, it also takesless energy to create an environmentthat permits the engine to run on airthan is available from the air.

The Water Fuel Cell ExplainedThe cell is the device that extracts

the energy from the water. For thispart of the explanation, let usconsider the first stage in theextraction to be principallyelectrolysis, where a voltage isapplied to two metal platesimmersed in water and a currentflows. From conventional science wewould expect this action to cause therelease of hydrogen and oxygengases, and it is so.

The plate connected to thepositive voltage produces oxygengas, and the plate connected to thenegative voltage produces hydrogengas. This is the pointwhere I believe aunique action takesplace in the water fuelcell. For those whothink the cell is justmaking hydrogen, weare using so littlecurrent and at such alow voltage thatFaraday’s law tells uswe could not makeenough hydrogen torun the smallestengine. The oxygengas is released into thearea above the waterand serves littlepurpose. Thehydrogen gas, however,is of interest to us.

When I say hydrogen, I shouldpoint out that I do not only refer tohydrogen as expressed in the normalH2O formula; we are more interestedin heavy hydrogen (deuterium, foundin all natural waters) and also purehydrogen.

As stated, at the positive plate inthe process of electrolysis wegenerate oxygen gas, and thereforeat a molecular level there must be aninstant where the remainingmolecule against the plate consistsof hydrogen. We would assume thatthe hydrogen molecule travelsthrough the water to the other platewhere the hydrogen gas is being

produced. I do not believe this to bethe case for all of the hydrogen, especially the heavy hydrogen andpossibly pure hydrogen.

It became apparent to me that asmall portion of these momentarilyunattached hydrogen moleculesmight in fact be attracted by theapplied voltage and migrate into thestructure of the metal itself.

Additionally, the nucleus ofdeuterium, called a deuteron, contains a neutron, whereas thecommon hydrogen nucleus containsno neutrons. I believe the neutronmay play a part in the electricalattraction and migration of deuteron

and hydrogen into metal. In the preparation of the cell's

water we electrically charge thewater, giving it a strong negativecharge, whereas all natural water hasa positive charge. This furtherpromotes the interaction andmigration into the metal and permitsthe water to act as a partial barrier, resisting the hydrogen's attempts toreturn to a natural state.

At all times, the hydrogen/deuterium is trying to return to anatural state and, given theopportunity, will flow to a negativepotential. Therefore it should beconsidered that there is an optimum

balance where we have suitableelectrical potential, be it by theapplication of voltage across the cellor electrically charged water withinthe cell, to stop this natural return.

When we talk of an electricalattraction, we are ultimately talkingof an attraction to the electricalsource. I believe the hydrogen/deuterium enters the metal andmigrates through the metal'scrystalline structure toward the pointwhere the electrical charge isapplied. It is through this attractionthat we are able to control and directthe molecules from the cell and intothe engine.

By applying a suitablevoltage to the engineend of our molecularconduit, we attract thehydrogen/ deuteriummolecules toward theengine. Then by having agap at the engine end ofthe connecting conduit, this is of a sufficientdistance to stopconventional electricalcurrent flow enteringinto the engine but isnot great enough to stopthe hydrogen/deuteriumfrom crossing to thenegative and enteringthe crystalline structureon the engine.

Although theaforementioned possibly satisfiesthe explanation of the process, I alsobelieve the cell produces a mildtorsion field. This field may well playan additional part in the process. From the Einstein– Cartan theory of1920, a torsion field is believed to bea rotating energy field that is at anangle to a magnetic field. Torsionfields are said to have speeds of onebillion times the speed of light andtravel through anything. Although Ido not know what part the torsionfield plays in the overall process, itmay be apparent in the manyphenomena experienced whenworking with these cells.

Stephen Jones's water fuel cell experimental set-up

Page 49: Nexus 1603 - new times magazine

Through the initial process ofelectrolysis, we cause a hydrogen/deuterium doping of the metal thatforms the cell. We then attract thesemolecules to the engine by a voltageand provide a path for them toattempt to return to a natural stateby entering the crystalline structureof the metal in the engine. Thehydrogen/deuterium may not beconsumed in the process of runningthe engine; it simply provides anenvironment that facilitates thenitrogen/oxygen (air) fuel mix.

To maintain the condition, weperiodically replace the water in thecell with freshly charged water. Theinterval of maintenance has notbeen determined but is thoughtto be many months or evenyears.

Implosion and ExplosionPhases

Having entered the crystallinestructure of the engine, arelatively slow process ofdoping occurs until there is apresence of hydrogen/deuterium molecules on allsurfaces of the engine, especially those of the intakemanifold and combustionchamber(s). I say "relatively slow"due to the fact that the effects of thecell can take hours to occur in analloy engine and longer in an ironengine. Once this has happened, Ibelieve that when air is compressedto as little as two atmospheres andignited in the encapsulation of ahydrogen/deuterium doped chamber,a unique reaction occurs that allowsthe nitrogen to become our primaryfuel in what is initially anendothermic reaction.

Endothermic reactions areimplosions that draw everything in,including the heat of the reactionitself. An endothermic reaction is awell-documented phenomenon.

When an internal combustionengine is running on a fuel thatcombusts (petrol or LPG, etc.), weignite the fuel when the piston is at

the top and the resultant explosionforces the piston downward.

With the new phenomenon, westart with an implosion. If that werenot the case, there'd be no way thatan engine could idle with a sparkadvanced to 70 degrees. I believethe implosion not only causes thepiston to be drawn up but the valvesto leak and more air to be drawn intothe combustion chamber. I alsobelieve this conclusion to be furthersupported by the fact that an enginerunning on a cell appears to havelittle or no compression when pull-starting it and why it can idle at sucha low speed. I have had my enginerunning smoothly at only a few

revolutions per minute; thecompression stroke alone shouldmake this impossible under normalconditions.

I believe the implosion phase ofthe cycle only lasts a few degrees;then, as the piston continuesupward, compressing the remainderof the air in the chamber, some ofthe energy of the endothermicimplosion, including some of theheat, is released, and at about thetop of the stroke an explosionoccurs. This explosion may beassisted by the presence of thehydrogen/deuterium doping of thecombustion chamber. It should alsobe considered that the remainingatmosphere in the chamber mayhave an altered ratio of nitrogen andoxygen as a result of the initialendothermic reaction.

Also supporting my theory is thefact that an endothermic reactiondraws in or consumes the heat. Iand many others have found thatengines running on a water fuel cellrun cold. In my case, it's simplywarm, but I have read and heard ofoccasions where frost has formed oncomponents of the engine and eventhe exhaust.

This dual process of implosion andexplosion may also explain theincrease in power that has beenwidely reported. Power variationsmust also be related to the differentenergies obtained from theatmospheric fuel.

It is important to note that for thesuccessful operation of anengine exhibiting thesephenomena requires allsurfaces to be doped with thehydrogen/deuterium, and insome instances a voltage needsto be applied to the turningcrankshaft to promote the initialmigration from the cylinderwalls to the pistons. This isdone by applying a voltage andarcing the turning crankshaftpulley or flywheel for a veryshort period of time.

This procedure can be verydangerous, and serious injury ordeath can occur should you becomeentangled or should the object usedbecome a projectile if caught by amoving surface of the engine. Onlyever arc on a surface turning awayfrom you, and be cautious of allmoving parts including electric orthermal fans that may start withoutnotice. The only reason for arcingthe turning crankshaft is that itreduces the possibility of damage tothe engine's bearings and cylinderbores by the current flow. ∞

In July 2008 my partner Katie and I, along with other researchers andpresenters from around the world, joined together in Glastonbury,England, for a conference entitled "Orbs: Interacting with OtherRealms". Earlier in the year we had made a presentation in Palm

Springs, USA, on the same subject and were amazed at the positiveinterest now shown in this phenomenon from all strata of society. Orbshave caught the imagination of people around the planet. Whatever wemay think about them, orbs are an undeniable phenomenon. Thousandsof people worldwide are now photographing these strange circles of light. But what are they really?

For the past two years, we've had a full schedule of conferencepresentations and interviews on the subject of orbs, but five years agoneither of us had any idea of the effect orbs would have on our own lives oron the lives of thousands of others around the globe.

Our own acquaintance with orbs began in 2002, when one afternoon wehappened to photograph a strange ball of light against a tree, after whichorbs began to appear regularly on our photographs. We'd had a digitalcamera for two years and had never before taken anything resembling anorb, so we set out to discover what was happening. After four years ofexperiences and hundreds of hours of photographing and researching orbsand related phenomena, we produced our book Beyond Photography(published by O Books, December 2006). Since publication, we havereceived many hundreds of emails, photographs and communications onorbs from people all across the world.

When we began to photograph and study orbs, we really had nopreconceptions as to what they were. Orbs ranged from the very large tothe very small. Some looked like faded concentric-ring patterns of agossamer thinness, while others were brightly coloured or opalescent. Aswe became more familiar with the phenomenon, we divided it into twodistinct categories:

1. Orbs—the disc-like images which appear on photos but which aremostly invisible to the naked eye.

2. Luminosities—moving luminous spheres which are often visible.Sometimes small, sometimes large, they can be picked up by camcorders, using night vision, as fast-moving objects.

For the purposes of this article, I use the term "orbs" to refer to bothaspects of the phenomenon.

Investigating the realm of orbs Let us take a rational look at the orbs phenomenon. Here, a few

questions may be helpful:• Can orbs be adequately explained by normal phenomena?Sunlight, flash feedback, raindrops and small reflective particles in the

air can all, at times, under certain conditions, show upon photographs as circular or orb-like images. However, the critical point here is that they do not doso consistently or in the vast majority of cases.Undoubtedly some orb-like images are due to naturaleffects. But it does not take more than carefulobservation and common sense to realise whichphoto-anomalies are the result of ordinary events. Inthat context, what I define hereafter as an "orb" is thatphenomenon which cannot be adequately explained insuch terms.

• How do we know that orbs are not the result ofdigital processing faults?

A widespread misconception is that orbs can only bephotographed with digital cameras. This is a completefallacy. Orbs have been photographed with all kinds ofcameras. Indeed, we and many others have SLR(single-lens reflex) filmnegatives of photos taken yearsago on which orbs can clearlybe seen.

Another popularmisconception is that orbs arethe result of CMOS(complementary metal-oxidesemiconductor) errors in digitalcameras. This is completelyunfounded but is so pervasivethat four key facts are worthnoting here:

1. No one has ever been ableto explain this anomaly intechnical terms.

2. People who have used digital cameras for yearshave never taken a photo of an orb.

3. Orbs have been regularly photographed by filmcameras.

4. Orb-like images have been recorded since theearly days of photography.

Realistically, the fanciful notion that the very samedigital error affects every make of camera in the entireworld so that they all photograph orbs is about asunlikely as the Moon being made of green cheese!

Whilst digital cameras see further into the infraredspectrum than do film cameras, they merely translatehigher-wavelength infrared colours into visual-spectrum wavelengths. All cameras, both film anddigital, only reproduce colours in the visual spectrum.

The simple truth is that the proliferation of digitaltechnology has meant that more people are takingphotographs than ever before, so this is why themajority of orb photos today are taken with digitalcameras.

But this does not categorically mean that orbs aredigital artefacts or errors. In photographs that we andothers have taken, orbs can clearly be seen behind

elements in an image. The clear inference here is thatanything behind an object in a photograph is part ofthe world outside the camera and is not a digitalprocessing anomaly.

• If orbs really are paranormal, how is it possible tophotograph them?

Anything and everything which we can normally seeor photograph falls within the visible-light wavelengthof 4,000 to 7,000 angstroms, between ultraviolet andinfrared in the electromagnetic spectrum (see fig. 1).

Wavelengths too short for us to see are bluer thanblue; this is ultraviolet light. Wavelengths too long forus to see are redder than red; this is infrared light.

Our graph of the electromagnetic spectrum givessome small indication of the comparatively narrowband of what we can actually see, and yet even that is abit like putting your thumb over a pocket atlas map of

Australia. The reality is vastlydifferent to the representation. In terms of frequencies, thevisual spectrum is huge. Forexample, red light is emitted at428,570 billion cycles persecond, so every time you lookat red light your eye receivesover 400 billion waves everysecond! For anything to beseen or photographed, it hasto be—if only for a fraction ofa second—part of our visualspectrum. Therefore, it is partof the normal world.

This raises the question asto whether any photograph of ghosts, UFOs, orbs, whatever, can truly be said to be "paranormal"because, at the very moment we photograph them, they are already part of normal physical reality. It callsinto question the whole idea of the so-called"supernatural" as opposed to the "natural" world. However, in the universe currently being revealed byquantum physics, such dualistic distinctions arerapidly becoming as irrelevant as Ptolemy's Earth-centred cosmology.

As to whether or not phenomena such as orbs aregenerated from, or by, an aspect of Reality beyond ournormal level of perception, this is another matterentirely. We can certainly photograph these visualmanifestations as orbs, but whatever it is thatgenerates this visual interface with our reality isbeyond detection by methods currently available to us.In that sense, orbs may legitimately be considered tobe a "paranormal phenomenon"—whereas the actualact of photographing orbs occurs within theconstraints of normal reality. Orbs, like theelectromagnetic spectrum in which they manifest, havemany more levels than meet the eye.

• What is the unique, distinguishing fact about orbs? The one incontrovertible fact about orbs is the

consistent ubiquity of the phenomenon. This is thecase across all types and makes of camera and videocamcorder, thus contradicting the preposterous notionthat orbs are exclusively the result of digital CMOSerrors.

In order to expand our enquiry, here is a short list ofsome common aspects of the orb phenomenon.

1. As mentioned above, the most notable aspect oforbs is their ubiquity. Thousands of individuals allover the world are photographing the samephenomenon with different cameras in widely differentconditions.

2. The vast majority of orbs cannot be adequatelyexplained in prosaic terms; that is,they are not dust, moisture, theplanet Venus, weather balloons, etc.

3. There is evidence of a definiteinteractive aspect to the orbsphenomenon, often relating topeople as specific individuals.

4. In psychological terms, thecircular image of the orb recalls thearchetypical symbol of Unity orOneness. Coincidentally, thisinherent symbolism is appearing at atime when the concept of Oneness iscritically meaningful to us inplanetary terms and is alsoparticularly significant in light ofthe new perspective of aconnective quantum realityunderpinning our physicaluniverse.

5. Orbs cross religious andcultural boundaries. All over theplanet, there is increasinginterest in orbs among people ofall (or no) beliefs.

6. Incidents of synchronicityare regularly reported as beingexperienced by those whophotograph orbs.

7. Many individuals from a variety of professionalbackgrounds report both purpose and intentionalityassociated with the visual phenomenon.

All the above points suggest an existentconsciousness inherent in the orbs phenomenon.

Speculation on orb manifestationsSo, what are orbs? Ideas vary according to individual

experiences and beliefs, but, in the context of all theabove observations, my suggestion would be that orbsare the visual indicators of another aspect of Reality—perhapseven evidence for the existence of an intell igent "other"consciousness.

Before continuing with this proposition, I must pointout that this is my opinion. I offer it as informedopinion, but, nevertheless, it is not a fact. The reasonwhy I stress this is because with orbs, as much as withany other paranormal subject, we inevitably encountersceptics or others who either do not know ordeliberately blur the distinction between "fact" and"opinion". We have to be aware that in the mysteriousworld of unexplained phenomena there are far moreopinions than there are facts. And that is a fact.

Orbs can be different things to different people, depending on their point of view. The meaning of orbsto individuals can be as varied as the people whophotograph them.

What does this tell us? I suggest it indicates that weare dealing with a generalised visualphenomenon which is non-specificand which responds to individualhuman consciousness. In thatcontext, we cannot with any degreeof certainty be too prescriptive aboutproclaiming that orbs are definitelyangels or faeries, etc. They may beanything we believe them to be—butequally they may not be. There is nosolid evidence available at themoment by which to define orbsexclusively as any of the popularcelestial or psychic entities familiar

to us. This is partly what hasinformed my proposition.

In further considering this, letus look at two key aspects of theorbs phenomenon: the ubiquityof the photographablemanifestations, and personalinterpretation of orbs as theyrelate to us as individuals. Iconsider the second point here.

Essentially, all experience ofReality is subjectively perceivedand interpreted. This isparticularly so in the case of

paranormal or extraordinary phenomena. Generally,we are all inclined to interpret such phenomenaaccording to our individual preconceptions orexperiences. In this sense, it is easy to see why somemay believe orbs to be angels or elemental spiritswhilst others may regard orbs as unborn or departedspirits.

According to the many cases we have studied, itseems that in general, when someone begins tophotograph them, orbs are soon seen as having aparticular meaning for that individual, but this may bedifferent to the meanings derived by other individuals. This could be due to the nature of individuatedconsciousness itself, to the orb phenomenon or to a

Page 54: Nexus 1603 - new times magazine

combination of these and other factors. At themoment, we simply do not know. What is importanthere is not our individual beliefs that orbs are angelsor spirits, etc., but the fact of a contemporaneousphenomenon which interacts with humanconsciousness.

Purposeful interactionTo illustrate this aspect, here is an example from

personal experience. Early on in our acquaintancewith orbs, for many months Katie and I could onlyphotograph them in one room of the house. We justcouldn't get them anywhere else, indoors or outside,no matter what we tried.

One evening we had family over for dinner andamongst them were two ardent sceptics, both of whomwere convinced that our orbs were the result ofreflections from the largemirror in that room. They werekeen to test this theory and wewere happy to let them. Afterdinner, we took down themirror and we all tookphotographs with threedifferent cameras. No orbs. The sceptics were delighted. Here was the final proof: nomirror, no orbs!

However, Katie and I,knowing the phenomenon alittle better, suggested that weshould all try another fewshots. This time we got threeor four orbs. Katie's brother, who was the main scepticat the time (though no longer, it must be added),stared at the images and almost grudgingly said: "Yes,well, I 'd be more impressed if you got a wholeroomful..." Seconds later, on the very next shot, therewas literally a whole roomful of orbs! This was such anunequivocal response that even our sceptics gotgoosebumps! But most important was the fact that onno subsequent shots that evening did any of usphotograph even a single orb. It was almost as ifsomething (or someone) had made its statement andthat was that.

Since then, we have experienced many otherincidents of apparently deliberate responses by thisphenomenon. Many people all across the world havealso reported similar tales of intentional or purposefulbehaviour by orbs. In this context it seems that thephotographic images, like green shoots in Spring, aremerely the visual tip of other, deeper, processes atwork.

Further to this, and particularly relevant here, wehave seen one of the most impressive pieces of movingfootage of orbs/luminosities, taken by someone (weshall call him Peter) who at the time did not believe

that the phenomenon was anything but dust, moistureor reflections, etc.

One weekend, Peter and his partner Sally went tostay at a hotel in the Lake District. Sally, who hadbecome interested in psychic phenomena and in factwas evidencing psychic abilities herself, was takingphotographs of orbs and also claiming to be able tosee them. Peter did not believe any of this but knewthat his partner did, so although he could not summonup much enthusiasm he did try to be understanding. When his partner said that she could see orbs in theirhotel room, he had to point out that he could seenothing, because, in reality, there was nothing thereexcept perhaps an overactive imagination. Sallyresponded by saying that she would ask the orbs tobecome visible so that Peter could also see them. After concentrating for a couple of minutes, she

exclaimed: "One is going tocome out of the wall now.Quick, take a shot now!"

All Peter had at hand was hismobile phone. The resultingvideo footage shows aluminous ball of lightemerging from the wall andgrowing larger as it movestowards the camera in acurving arc to disappear overPeter's left shoulder. It was astartling occurrence for the twowho had witnessed it.Everyone who has viewed thisfilm has been equally

impressed. Peter's mobile phone video clearlydemonstrates that this phenomenon is responsive, interactive and purposeful.

However, this is not unusual. Many other people weknow are also able to be specific about whereorbs/luminosities will appear. We know of many casesin which similar luminous spheres (we call themluminosities) have been recorded appearing or moving aspredicted or requested.

Scientists and others known to us have clocked orbstravelling at over 200 mph (~322 kph) between twopoints. Dust doesn't travel that quickly; nor does itrespond to requests.

For me, the observed interactive and purposefulnature of this phenomenon indicates the probability ofconsciousness. What is happening here goes farbeyond the photographic images. This, of course, isnot something recognised by any kind of orthodoxy.

Plasma theory and orbs As stated above, there is evidence to suggest that

orbs have a relationship to consciousness, but, when itcomes to the ubiquity of the phenomenon and theactual physical nature of the manifestations, there is

a whole roomful of orbs! This was such an unequivocal

response that even our sceptics got goosebumps!

Page 55: Nexus 1603 - new times magazine

one very pertinent question we need to ask in thecontext of our enquiry: when we photograph an orb, what exactly are we photographing? If not mundaneobjects or ghosts, angels or spirit beings, what is itthat is appearing on our photographs? Is there somereasonable theory as to the likely physical propertiesof orbs which makes them photographable in the firstplace?

Here, as with most other areas of enquiry, the besttools we have are an open mind and a critical faculty.Wonder must be balanced by reason, and here it isuseful to bear in mind the basic principle of rationalenquiry: that any theory is to be held only untilempirical evidence outweighs its credibility; then it iseither modified or discarded. Todiscover the truth of anything, it isimportant that our theories or beliefsare a dynamic springboard forinvestigation and do not become achain to restrict progress. We mustalways allow for the possibility ofother, more credible, perspectives.

Out of the small handful oftheories as to the physical propertiesof orbs, the one theory which seems, from my point of view, to match mostelements of the phenomenon is thenotion that orbs may be plasmaconcentrations akin to balllightning.

Ball lightning is well recordedall across the world and themost widely credibleexplanation for it, so far, seemsto be plasma. According to thetextbook definition, plasma is anelectrically neutral, highlyionised gas composed of ions, electrons and neutral particles. The air around us alwayscontains both unchargedmolecules and positivelycharged molecules of gases.

Normally these positively charged particles, or ions, are widely interspersed, but during an electrical storm, for instance, the number of ions may suddenlyincrease to form a spontaneous cloud of electrifiedparticles whose reactive motions generate a self-illuminating glow. Ball lightning is usually seen as aluminous sphere, ranging in diameter from a fewinches to a few feet (or a few centimetres to a metre ormore).

These spheres are variously coloured and describedas gliding, hovering, floating and drifting. They arealso reported as being able to change shape, and havebeen witnessed performing almost instantaneousdirectional changes and sudden stops. These kinds of

manoeuvres would seem to indicate the properties ofessentially weightless, electrically propelled plasmas—all characteristics which have been observed andrecorded by many people who are studying orbphenomena.

The basic premise of the plasma theory of orbs isthat orbs are complex plasma structures which maybecome visible when exposed to electromagneticenergy or large quantities of photons such as areemitted by a camera flash.

The instant you fire your flash, electrons in anyfacing plasma concentration move instantaneously toa higher energy orbit when struck by the photons fromthe flash. When these now highly charged electrons

return to their original orbit, newphotons (light) are instantly released.

This phenomenon is known asluminescence. All this happens withinmicroseconds, and the luminescentplasmas are captured as orbs by thefortunate photographer. In terms of apurely physical explanation, thisseems reasonably credible.

Small transient lights What the plasma idea does not

explain, however, is the aspect ofconscious purpose exhibited by orbs

and experienced by a vastnumber of people.

As Katie and I have witnessed, orbs respond to individualhumans, exhibit purposefulbehaviour and often manifest onrequest to be recorded oncamera or filmed on video asmoving luminosities.

Something which may have abearing on both the plasmanotion and the conscious aspectof orbs is a little-understoodphenomenon which Katie had

been seeing for years—a phenomenon that we callsmall transient lights. We discovered that when she seesthese tiny lights, if we take a shot in the same directionwe can actually photograph them as orbs. I touch onthis only briefly here, but it is not unique to Katie;many healers and psychics are familiar with thisphenomenon.

Large numbers of these little lights have often beenreported as common during healing sessions or timesof meditation.

Some refer to them as prana, whilst others knowthem as the visual effect of ch'i energy. This meritsfurther study and suggests to me that, to understand

Examining the Skull

As these words are being written, it is almost exactly 10 years to theday since I first laid eyes on the Starchild skull. It was February 18,1999. I will never forget the breathtaking moment when I first heldit in my hands and immediately knew something was seriously

"wrong" with it. It was too light—much too light for a typical human skull, even one with the slightly reduced size of an average twelve-year-old. Itfelt more like a dried gourd than a skull, and at first glance I couldn't seeanything normal about it. It was just plain weird.

Its owners, Melanie and Ray Young of El Paso, Texas, had invited me tocome there specifically to examine it and tell them what I thought. I hadsome expertise regarding skulls due to my extensive research into the truthabout human origins, much of which I based on contrasting the manydifferences between humans and so-called "pre-human" skulls. But I soonrealised that Melanie knew even more than I knew. For many years she hadbeen a neonatal nurse, seeing a wide range of human skull deformities andkeenly aware of the technical aspects of what went into creating suchaberrations.

The word that came to mind was "impossible", yet there it was, cradled inmy hands, so I had to settle for "incredible". The eye sockets were wildlydifferent from normal. My father was an optometrist, so I knew about eyes. The neck opening, the foramen magnum, was well out of place. The lowerrear area was without the small bump on every human's head (or chimp'sor gorilla's, for that matter); it had no inion. The entire rear area of itshead was flat, but there was no evidence of manipulated flattening. Nocradleboarding caused that flatness; it had grown that way, as had theeyes, neck and inion.

A crease-like dent in the upper rear of the head clinched it for me, just asit had for Melanie and Ray. Humans do not exhibit that, no question.Humans are rounded in that area. However, something else does havesuch a crease, something familiar to everyone in the field of UFO–alienresearch.

The so-called "Grey" aliens are reputed to have such a dent in the toprear of their heads, giving them a distinctive "heart" shape—a dentedcrown and a bulbous cranium above a small upper face that narrows to avery small lower face.

I held in my hand the detached piece of upper right jaw (maxilla), foundseparately from the cranium (which was also minus its entire lower jaw). Itwas the size of an infant's, if that large. This being clearly had an extra-small lower face, and the attachment points for its chewing muscles borethat out, being greatly reduced from where they normally are on a human.

I realised I might possibly be holding the preserved skull of a Grey alien.Anyone with an understanding of basic human anatomy and of how Greys

are supposed to look would make the same staggeringconnection. They'd have no choice.

It was all I could do to hold it steady in my hands as Ilooked at Melanie and Ray and told them what Ithought, which in so many words was that it couldpossibly be the skull of a Grey. It was so incredibly farfrom normal that such a wild speculation wasconceivable. Nonetheless, I couldn't initially makemyself believe it was, in fact, such a stupendousdiscovery. I urged them to assume it was a bizarredeformity and to maintain that view until they securedsolid proof to the contrary. To emphasise my doubt, Ipegged the chances at 80 per cent deformity and 20per cent alien, but that 20 per centwould remain huge until they couldprove it belonged on the 80 per centside of the ledger. On hearing that, they asked if I would undertake toestablish scientifically their weirdskull's heritage, whether human oralien, which began my quest thatcontinues to this day.

Now, however, I can assure all fansof this amazing relic that we are atlast closing in on a conclusivedetermination of its genetic origin. Ifall goes as scheduled, in 2009 theskull's DNA will be analysed with anew technique that wasunavailable in 2003 when itsDNA was recovered andanalysed. This new test will getto the heart of what makes theStarchild skull so special, and itwill comprise the scientific coreof what should prove beyonddoubt that the skull is notentirely human.

Before I discuss therevolutionary test that will beconducted this year, let's revisitwhat happened in 2003; this is necessary tounderstand why the Starchild stands on the thresholdof making history as big as history can be made.

The First Five Years Anyone interested in following the ins and outs and

ups and downs of the various scientific tests theStarchild was put through in its early years can acquiremy book The Starchild Skull (2007). It recounts the majorevents that occurred during those years—from thesurprising radiographic X-rays, the reassuring CAT-scanresults and the carbon-14 dating of death at 900 yearsago, to the disaster of an initial forensic DNA test andthe stunning results of a clandestine analysis with ascanning electron microscope...they're all there in fulldetail and don't need to be reviewed here.

The bottom line is that at every turn, after every validtest, the results kept shifting my initial percentage ofdoubt away from "human deformity" toward an "alien"interpretation.

In 1999 there were only half a dozen labs that couldanalyse "ancient" DNA, which was defined as olderthan 50 years. At 900 years since death, the Starchildmore than qualified. However, among those half adozen labs, none would touch the Starchild with theproverbial 10-foot pole. They wanted nothing to dowith a skull that was being touted as potentially alien."Doing that," one wrote to me, "would be bad forbusiness." Facing such a stonewall, I decided to take a

chance on a much-less-controlledforensic test designed for DNA lessthan 50 years old. It was a completebotch that left us in the lurch until2003.

By 2003, when we were finally ableto arrange a comprehensive andreliable test for the Starchild'sancient DNA, my thinking was thatwe were almost certainly looking atan alien skull. I had swungcompletely around and now believedit was a percentage split of 80 percent alien and 20 per cent deformity, which probably was being

conservative. I realised that analien skull's falling into myhands was comparable to theDead Sea Scrolls being found bya goatherd. Nonetheless, he didwhat he did and I was doingwhat I was doing, finding outwhat I was finding out, and Iknew what the results meant.

Nothing was testing out astypically human. The bone itselfwas too light and much toodurable to be purely human. It

was more like tooth enamel than bone. The brain'svolume was entirely too large for the skull encasing it.Inside the Starchild's cranium was a brain one-thirdlarger than normal. Where did all that extra brain go?How did it all fit in there? Better yet, with such a highand steep rear angle canted toward the spinal opening, how had the brain's matter not been squeezed out todistend the foramen magnum? This list ofphysiological differences was extensive, with over twodozen major points. It skewed as far from a normalhuman skull as did that of a chimp or gorilla.

DNA 101 No matter how many physiological differences we

came up with, experts from mainstream science couldthwart us at every turn simply by quoting their

Darwinist mantra that, when it cameto nature, absolutely anything waspossible. Therefore, we couldn'tshow them any physical variationthat they couldn't explain by callingupon the unlimited power theythemselves had assigned to nature. It was like trying to argue withreligious zealots. No, it might havebeen worse. We certainly couldn'tfind any room for flexibility, so inthe end it all came down to DNAanalysis—the premier tool ofscientific certainty. People endedup on death row because of DNAevidence, just as it saved othersfrom wrongful convictions. DNAwas the weapon of choice for thosewishing to make a case againstclosed minds and cowardly spirits.

DNA has two basic types:mitochondrial and nuclear. Innearly every cell in an animal'sbody, which can amount to trillions, there is a small core, called thenucleus, surrounded by a jelly-likesubstance, called cytoplasm.Imagine a golf ball with its corkcore, its surrounding twine and itsdurable "skin". This analogises aliving cell perfectly: nucleus, cytoplasm and outer wall.

Floating around in the cytoplasm like raisins inpudding are mitochondria, which are small packets ofwhat are called base pairs, the smallest units of matterthat make up genes which combine to formchromosomes. In each mitochondrion there are about16,000 base pairs. Keep that number in mind.

Inside the cell nucleus is the entire genome of theindividual, containing all the chromosomes given to itby its parents. In humans, that is 23 from Dad and 23from Mom—a total of 46 chromosomes. Incredibly, our closest genetic relatives, chimps and apes, withwhom we supposedly share a very close biological"descent" from a remote common ancestor, have 48chromosomes. This is beyond bizarre, and I discuss itextensively in my work regarding human origins, though it plays only a peripheral role in the Starchild'scase.

The total genome of a typical human is made up ofthose 46 chromosomes comprised of roughly 25,000genes, which are subdivided into roughly three billionbase pairs. So remember that number, too, andcompare it with the 16,000 base pairs in eachmitochondrion floating in the cytoplasm outside thecell's nucleus. The floating mitochondria are like tinygrains of sand in relation to the basketball-sizednucleus.

Mitochondria are passed down intact fromgeneration to generation solely by females. Theychange only slightly over the centuries, with amutation here and a mutation there, but by and largethey stay the same. Whether you are male or female, you have essentially the same mitochondria possessedby 100 or more generations in your family line, back tothe first female in your line. Thus, they are easy totrack throughout the course of genetic testing.

The DNA inside the nucleus of cells is much harderto recover intact than the DNA inside mitochondriabecause it is much larger and far more fragile andbecause there is so incredibly much more of it todegrade. Also, because it comes from both parents itis never the same in any two individuals. There willalways be a large amount of mixing and matching ofthe base pairs, genes and chromosomes betweencouples who produce offspring. Each new mating isunique, and even identical twins will exhibit subtlevariations.

The Starchild's Mitochondrial DNAWe took the Starchild skull to Trace Genetics in

Davis, California, in the middle of 2003. The first thingwe discovered was how hard and dense its bone was.The geneticists had to struggle to cut it with a high-speed Dremel blade that sawed through normal

Page 60: Nexus 1603 - new times magazine

human bone with relative ease. The next step was todissolve a shard of the Starchild's bone in a standardsolvent called EDTA. The bone was put into a test tubein a rocker arm, and after one week it should have beendissolved. It wasn't, not even slightly. A powerfuldetergent had to be added to break it down—something never needed with normal human bone.

Once the Starchild's DNA was recoverable, thegeneticists went through their processes with it. Theyfound that the DNA was well preserved and quite easyto recover from the solution in which it was dissolved. Its 900 years buried in a mine tunnel had left it in analmost pristine condition: it was never oxidised byscorching sunlight or leached by rainwater soaking it.It was much likea relatively freshburial, asopposed towhat theg e n e t i c i s t snormally had todeal with. (Ourgeneticists hadworked on thef a m o u sKennewick Man,the 9,000-year-old skeletondiscovered in1996 inW a s h i n g t o n .They found thatall of its DNAwas hopelesslydegraded byexposure to the elements.)

The Starchild's mitochondrial DNA was easilyrecovered and came up bright and clear in the gelsheets used to reveal its make-up. It turned out tohave a human mother from what is known asHaplogroup C, which is a type of Amerindian commonto both North and South America. There was nothingunusual about it. However, this discovery ruled out acouple of key assumptions that we had made aboutthe Starchild and its genetic heritage.

We knew that the Starchild had died 900 years earlierand seemed to have been buried by a human femalewho then lay down beside its grave and committedsuicide. Their skeletons were found and their skullsrecovered by a girl exploring a long-abandoned minetunnel in Mexico around 1930. We made the naturalassumption that the human female had a very closerelationship to the child: she was probably its mother, whether natural or adoptive. We could think of noother relationship they might have had that wouldwarrant the ultimate sacrifice of her own life.

When the human female's DNA was recovered and

her mitochondrial DNA was tested, it was found to befrom Haplogroup A, another common type ofAmerindian. This meant that the Starchild and thewoman who chose to commit suicide and die beside itwere not genetically related. Perhaps she was anadoptive mother, or a close friend or caretaker, or loveror even its partner in life. We had no way to answerthose questions or any number of others.

Finding out that the Starchild had a human motheralso forced us to drop the idea that it might be a pureGrey alien. Now, the most we could assume was that itmight be a hybrid with a human mother and an alienfather.

This led to another assumption. If it was ah u m a n – a l i e nhybrid, it was inall likelihood theresult of genetice n g i n e e r i n grather than anormal sexualunion. We basedthat assumptionon thea d m i t t e d l ya n e c d o t a levidence frommany women oftoday who swearthey've beenabducted byGreys, madepregnant bythem in some" u n n a t u r a l "

manner, and then in the fourth month of theirpregnancy had their foetuses removed and raised tobirth weight in test tubes that many women see laterwhen being introduced to their own living hybridchildren. If such a program is occurring now, then whycould it not have occurred 900 years ago?

Following the revelations of the Starchild'smitochondrial DNA would be the analysis of itsnuclear DNA, which could easily be the end of the linefor us. Five years of effort would be riding on this onemake-or-break test. With the Starchild's motherunquestionably a typical Amerindian, if the father'sDNA showed up in the search for the nuclear DNA thenwe would close our case. The Starchild would havehad two human parents, and that would be the end ofit. No matter how unusual its physiological traitsmight be, if its genes showed two human parents thenturn out the lights, the party's over.

The Starchild's Nuclear DNATo secure the recovery of DNA in 2003, geneticists

had only one technique available: the use of primers,

Page 61: Nexus 1603 - new times magazine

previously coded strings of base pairs that arecommon to all humans. Those strings can go on forhundreds or a few thousand base pairs and are likekeys that fit precisely into locks. The soup of dissolvedDNA can be imagined as an accumulation of thoselocks. The primer keys are swirled into the soup to findtheir specific corollary locks and, when they do that, those lock-and-key alignments can then be extractedand analysed by putting them into "gel sheets".Everyone has seen those small bars that are created torepresent someone's DNA. (A photo/diagram of theStarchild's is included.)

When the Starchild's nuclear DNA was filled withprimer keys, those keys went looking for locks thatwere combinations of both its motherand father.

By that point, those of us inside theStarchild Project were soundly rattledby the mother's turning out to behuman. Half of what we were betting, that the Starchild might be a pureGrey alien, was now off the table.

So with bated breath, we awaitedthe first test result...and it wasnothing, nada, no recovery, not even awhisper of a recovery, which couldmean one of two things: (1) theStarchild's nuclear DNA was toodegraded to permit a recovery; or(2) the recovery couldn't occurbecause the father was notentirely human.

We felt we could rule out thefirst possibility based on the easewith which the human'smitochondrial DNA and nuclearDNA had been recovered. Herlocks and keys were bright andclear in her gel sheets, indicatingthat she hadn't degraded much—which, as noted earlier, waslogical for bones entombed in a mine tunnel for 900years: no wind, no rain, no sun-bleaching. And thesame was true for the Starchild. Its mitochondrialDNA had come up very easily on the first attempt torecover it. So the odds had suddenly swung in ourdirection. If the Dad was human, we should have had aroutine recovery.

The second test also came up empty, as did thethird, fourth, fifth and sixth. That was enough for thegeneticists. Dad's DNA was not letting the primersconnect, and six tests meant there was no possibilityof laboratory error. If Dad was a normal human, one ofthose six attempts would have found him. Thus, onlyone stark conclusion could be drawn: Dad was not ahuman!

Unfortunately, this did not mean we could loudly

announce that we had secured iron-clad proof of analien form of life on this planet at least once, 900 yearsago. As we began breaking into a victory dance, thegeneticists turned down the music and explained to usthat the fat lady was off in the distance warming up,but she wasn't on stage yet. We still had more to do.

The Fat Lady ArrivesOur geneticists told us the only thing they could

officially state about the Starchild's DNA tests was thatthey couldn't recover nuclear DNA in six tries. The factthat the other recoveries were easy and quite clear inthe gel sheets was highly indicative, but not proof ofanything. The only way we would get proof, they

explained, was when a new recoverytechnique only then on the horizonfinally became available. Thattechnique would do away withprimers entirely and go aboutrecovery in a very different way. Itwould entail recovering each andevery base pair in an entire genomeso there could be absolutely nodoubt about how that genome wasconstructed.

This new technique, when itbecame available, would allow theStarchild's entire package of DNA to

be recovered, and then it couldbe compared to a normal humanto see how close or how far awayit was from those norms. Theyassured me that the newtechnique would require three tofive years of further research anddevelopment.

Sure enough, exactly threeyears later the world learned thata company called 454 LifeSciences in the USA had createdthe breakthrough that would

allow full genome recovery using only base pairs, allthree billion of them in the case of humans. Wait Onewas over.

Wait Two was that we couldn't afford the newtechnology. In any case, it was being applied to theNeanderthal genome because that was an answerscience was anxious to have; consequently, themillions of dollars needed to get that answer weremade available through science's myriad grants. Butno such money was available to secure an answer forsomething like the Starchild, which nobody in sciencewanted to know in case it overturned their world view.

We were told that time and rapid advances in thenew technology would bring it into our reach within acouple of years, which turned out to be true.

So here we are, 10 years gone, having spent the first

five years waiting for our first DNA test, which made itblindingly obvious that we were on the right track, thenhaving waited three more years for the 454 technologyto be created, and then two more for it to come withinour financial reach. A decade of life...what a grind it'sbeen.

As of now, the cost of the 454 test has dropped fromseveral million dollars to about US$200,000. That drophas put it within the reach of a documentaryproduction company in London that contacted me inlate 2008 with a proposal. If they paid for the criticaltesting, would I participate in an hour-long film specialabout it? They wanted to delve into the Starchild'sbackground, relating how it came to be where it is now,but focusing on the testing itself, waiting for the"Eureka!" moment when we'd all know for certainwhether or not the bizarre relic was entirely human or,if not human, how far from human.

Understand how this willwork. We know that chimps areonly three per cent differentfrom humans. Gorillas are onlyfive per cent different. And weshould know in the next fewmonths how differentNeanderthals are. Earlyreports say less than one percent, but as of this writingthat's merely rumour. It couldend up more or less. However, that leaves a clear playing fieldfor the Starchild, which couldend up being very close tohumans or quite far away. Only this one expensive, extensive test (three to four months in duration) using454 equipment will let us know.

If the Starchild is, say, 0.5 per cent different, that is,one-half of one per cent, does that mean it had analien father? Yes, of course. If it's not human to arange of 99.99 per cent, which is how astonishinglylittle we differ among ourselves, then it isn't human.(Humans are, in fact, not far from clones. There ismore genetic variation between two randomly selectedchimps from the same inbred group than exists amongall of humanity, from Pygmies to Eskimos. This also isfrom my human origins work and only peripherallyrelates to the Starchild.)

So, where do we draw the line? Where do we call theStarchild itself an alien, even though it had a humanmother? Would one per cent difference from a normalhuman be far enough away? How about three per centaway? Or five per cent away, as far as a gorilla? Wouldthat be far enough? It's an interesting question toposit at this point, before the test result is known; butwhatever it turns out to be, the fact that it won't beentirely human should be enough to carry the day andmake history on a scale few of us alive have even

imagined. I'm quite certain about that.Based on the astonishing array of the Starchild's

physiological differences—at least two dozen majorones—relative to normal humans, we have to say thatthose differences were caused by variations in thegenes that told it to grow in those unusual ways. Andwith the skull alone exhibiting so many distinctanomalies, we can easily imagine a similar percentagethroughout the rest of the Starchild's body, which wasdescribed as "misshapen" by the girl who found it.Thus, with its badly misshapen skull and misshapenbody, I feel comfortable going out on a limb andpredicting that the Starchild's DNA should be wellbeyond one per cent different from that of all humans.More likely, it will be so far away that no one can drawany conclusion other than that its father was purely analien and it, too, was far more than half alien.

The documentary is scheduled to be filmed during2009 and should be availablefor viewing all around theworld by the end of the year.We would like it to be availablebefore the Christmas holidaysso that everyone who lives onthis magical, mystical planetcan ring in a new year, 2010,that will be like no other. Wewill have irrevocably shiftedour place in the cosmos. Weare confident that this willhappen, and we ask you all tostay tuned. ∞

LIFE WAS NOT A WALKABOUT FOR VICTORIA'S ABORIGINES

by Dr Graham Phillips, edited fromThe Age, Melbourne, 13 March 2003

According to Heather Builth, western Victoria's Aborigines werenot nomads; they lived in villages.

This conclusion, which contradicts thelong-held belief that Aborigines existedsolely as wandering hunter-gatherers, isthe result of investigations carried out bythe researcher from Flinders University,South Australia, over the past eightyears.

Builth says that the Gunditjmarapeople in the Lake Condah region ofwestern Victoria were also farmersand that they modified more than 100square kilometres of the landscape tobreed eels. They constructed artificialponds across the grassy wetlands anddug channels to connect them. Thewhole scheme was systematicallypunctuated with eel traps.

"The area was naturally a wetland, with natural swamps, but theymodified these with weirs, channelsand dams to make the wholelandscape eel-friendly," says Builth.

Some of the modifications wereimpressive. In parts, the channelswere dug through rock to allow waterto flow from swamp to swamp.

Some of the chains of channels andponds stretched more than 30kilometres.

But Builth's research revealedsomething more remarkable. Sheestimated the output from these eelfarms could have fed up to 10,000people. On the basis of this research, she believed this was more anancient fishing industry than asubsistence farm, and she set out toprove it.

She had noticed the landscape wasscattered with burnt, hollowed-outtrees that were often next to the eeltraps. Could the structures have beenancient smokehouses? Smoulderingfires could have been lit in the basesof the trees and the freshly caughteels hung up above, to be preservedby the smoke.

To confirm the theory, Builth tooksoil samples from the bases of fourtrees. Laboratory analysis revealedthat the samples did contain traces ofeel fat.

"Suddenly the whole picturechanged. The Gunditjmara weren'tjust catching eels, their whole societywas based around eels. And that tome was the proof," she says.

The villages associated with theLake Condah fish farm, she says, wereactually more like company towns, with dwellings built to house thepeople who worked the farms. "It'slike you have your council houses forthe factory. That's what was going onhere," says Builth.

Archaeologists know a societyundergoes a quantum leap insophistication when it can produce asurplus of food, because thecommunity has more time to devoteto pursuits other than basic survival.

"This puts the people here in adifferent category than we'vegenerally put Aboriginal groups."

Aborigines are usually thought of asliving in small communal bands, where power and wealth are sharedrelatively equally. But Builth believesthe Lake Condah farmers lived in amuch more complex society.

"I think what we had here was ahierarchical, structured society. We

Page 65: Nexus 1603 - new times magazine

APRIL – MAY 2009 www.nexusmagazine.com NEXUS • 65

had chiefs, for example, with lots andlots of power."

Perhaps the biggest surprise aboutthe Gunditjmara prehistoric fishingsociety came when Builth askedMonash University geologist PeterKershaw to try to put a date on it. Hedrilled into some of the ponds thatstill have water today (much of thearea was drained in the 1800s) to takecores of soil from the muddy bottom.Kershaw was able to drill 13 metresbefore hitting the bedrock, whichproduced a core that stretched all theway from the present day down to soilmade 18,000 years ago.

Like a forensic scientist, Kershawhoped to date the eel farm fromindirect evidence. Eventually hefound the region of the core wherethe plant species abruptly changed. The vegetation had gone from beingdominated by plants that preferred adrier environment, to water-lovingaquatic species.

"This doesn't occur naturally," saysKershaw. "It had to have some help.People have been here—that is themost likely explanation. And thosepeople could well have been humaneel farmers flooding the area with anartificial ponding system."

But the most dramatic finding waswhen Kershaw radiocarbon-dated thepart of the core showing the abruptchange. It was 8,000 years old, making the fish farming industry atLake Condah one of the most ancient.

The only comparable group at thisearly time were the indigenouspeople on America's northwest coast, who caught salmon as they naturallymigrated up the rivers. But theGunditjmara's farming practices werefar more developed.

They actually brought the youngeels in from the ocean and trappedthem in their artificial waterways forup to 20 years.

Builth also suspects that theGunditjmara traded the smoked eelsacross Victoria and South Australia.

The famous escaped convict WilliamBuckley, who lived with Aborigines formany years, mentioned eels fromwestern Victoria in his diaries, as didVictoria's first Protector of Aborigines,George Augustus Robinson.

Builth was originally attracted toLake Condah because of the bouldersscattered all over the ground. Manyof them seemed clumped into circularpatterns. Since the 1970s, peoplehad argued that these were theremains of the village huts' stonyfoundations, but the claims hadalways been controversial.

In 1990, the Lake Condah stonecircles were officially surveyed, andthe conclusion, after just a 40-daystudy, was that most of the circleswere not hut foundations at all.

This was too much for Builth, andshe began her Lake Condah research. This research eventually ended with ahighly praised PhD thesis thatdemolished the VictorianArchaeological Survey's negativeconclusions.

To prove that the circles of stoneswere not natural formations, Builthpainstakingly measured and weighedeach of the rocks in them. She thenperformed a statistical analysis andshowed that the chance of theircoming together in this way naturallywas almost zero. The only likely

remaining explanation was that thecircles were the stone foundations ofhuts.

So how could previousarchaeologists have missed all this, given the scale of the operation andthat the fish farms would still havebeen operating when Europeansarrived? Builth suspects that it isbecause the Gunditjmaradisappeared quickly after whitesettlers came.

"History tells us, many [of thesettlers] had a military backgroundand they knew tactics, they knew howto survive, they knew how to win, andthey knew how to get rid of Aboriginalpeople pretty quickly."

By the time archaeologists hadarrived in Australia, the onlyAboriginal people still leadingtraditional lifestyles in significantnumbers were the ones living on theless desirable land.

"Most studies, certainlyanthropological studies, focused onpeople dwelling in desert in semi-aridconditions, because they were thelast people to live in their traditionalland. These people [theGunditjmara] were the first to losetheir land; that's the difference." ∞(Source: The Age, 13 March 2003,h t tp : / /www. th eage . c om.au/ar t i c l e s /2003/03/12/1047431092972.html)

WAS THERE A SECOND SPHINX AT GIZA?

by Antoine Gigal © February 2009

Antoine Gigal has unearthed historicalevidence which shows that, until the 11thcentury AD, a second Sphinx existed on theGiza Plateau but has since been dismantled.

— Histories & Mysterieshttp://www.histories-mysteries.com

23 February 2009

In 1858, François Auguste Mariettewas asked by the Duke of Luynes toverify the proposition of Pliny the

Elder that the Sphinx had beenconstructed and was not monolithic.

Mariette opened a trench near thePyramid of Khufu (Fourth Dynasty;2589–2566 BC), and in a sanctuary ofIsis (dating from the first century BC)he found the so-called InventoryStele. The stele states that “duringthe reign of Khufu, he ordered theconstruction of a monument thelength of the Sphinx". The logicalconclusion is that the Sphinx wasalready there, and that the standardtheory, which is that the Sphinx wascontemporary with Khafre (FourthDynasty; 2520–2494 BC), is incorrect.

No wonder, therefore, that the

majority of Egyptologists try to turntheir attention away from theInventory Stele: it poses too manyproblems. Some prefer to affirm thatthis stele was inscribed with a list ofthe inventory of the Temple of Isisand that it therefore dates from theTwenty-sixth Dynasty only. Maybe, but Mariette, its discoverer, spentmore than 10 years researching theGiza Plateau and walked away withthe conviction that the stele waserected by Khufu himself.

It was Captain Giovanni BattistaCaviglia who, in 1816, cleared theSphinx and its surrounding templesfrom the sand and attributed theconstruction of the Sphinx to Khafrebecause of the proximity of hispyramid to the Sphinx. However, nota single inscription has confirmedthis link and the Sphinx is not even inalignment with this pyramid.

There is also a text from PharaohAmenhotep II (circa 1448–1420 BC),in which the Sphinx is mentioned andis labelled as “older than thepyramids".

Then there is the famous DreamStele of Tuthmosis IV (EighteenthDynasty; 1420–1411 BC). CertainEgyptologists all too quickly believethat they have seen the name of

Khafre on a piece of the inscription(today no longer present) on thestele, in the praises to a deity, eventhough the name is not there inreality but is only in the outline of asingle syllable, which is far fromconclusive. Furthermore, they haveinserted into the translation a secondsyllable that does not exist on thestele itself!

The story goes that after a hunt,Tuthmosis IV (who was only a princeat the time and was not heir to thethrone) reposed in the shadow of thehead of the Sphinx, which was theonly part of the monument that wasstill above ground, the underlyingstructures being covered by sand.

In his sleep, he had a dream inwhich the Sphinx asked to beuncovered from the sands. In return, the Sphinx would give him power andfortune. Indeed, Tuthmosis decidedto carry out the request and soonafterwards became pharaoh as well asvery rich.

However, what is particularlyinteresting on the Dream Stele is therepresentation of the Sphinx. Thereare two! Equally, one can see thatthe two Sphinxes sit on architecturalconstructions, i.e., a small templewith a gate.

The usual interpretation byEgyptologists is that these templeswere merely the representation ofwhat was present in front and to thesouth of the Sphinx. However, such aconclusion fails, as it is well knownthat the rules of perspective for theancient Egyptians were very strictand no official artist would allowhimself to deviate from reality to suchan extent.

Most importantly, in the InventoryStele there is mention of a lightningstrike that struck the cap of a secondSphinx as well as a sycamore tree—asacred tree in those days—which wasburned by the same lightning strike. The lightning strike marked thebeginning of the end of this secondSphinx.

According to archaeologist MichaelPoe, who refers to papyrus fragmentsfrom the Middle Kingdom, the secondSphinx was located face to face withthe still-existing Sphinx. It waslocated on the other side of the Nileand was destroyed by a violent risingof the river Nile circa 1000 AD. Thelocal people took stones from thestructure to rebuildtheir villages.

This thesis isconfirmed by othertexts, such as those ofthe great Arabgeographer and scholarAl-Idrisi (1099–1166AD) in his twog e o g r a p h i c a lencyclopaedias (Kitabal-Mamalik wa al-Masalikand Kitab al-Rujari). Hementions the presenceof two Sphinxes atGiza—monuments hedescribes in greatdetail. One is in a verybad state, licked by thewaters of the Nile, andseveral stones aremissing.

Other authors alsomention the existenceof two Sphinxes. Thefamous historian Al-Musabbihi writes abouta “sphinx smaller thanthe other” (likelybecause the other onehad deteriorated badlyby that time) on the other side of theNile, made from bricks and stones(Annals of Rabi II, circa 1024 AD).

In total, these accounts presentconclusive evidence that once therewere two sphinxes: the Sphinx whichstill exists; and a second Sphinx onthe opposite side of the Nile, madefrom bricks, which sustaineddamaged and in relatively moderntimes, the 11th century, was used as aquarry, resulting in its completedismantling.

As to the precise location of thesecond Sphinx, there are threepossibilities. The work is madeespecially hard as the area has manymodern buildings. We only know thatthe Sphinx was on the other side ofthe Nile—a river that was much widerin those days, especially at the timesof the inundations.

The all-important questions, nevertheless, are these... Why hasthere not been more written aboutthis second Sphinx? What is there tohide? Why not mention itsdeconstruction together with theremoval of the outer lining of theGreat Pyramid, which was used by thepeople of Cairo for their homes?Perhaps the reason is more complex.Maybe these Sphinxes hid/hide ameans to gain access to somethingunderneath the Giza Plateau.

Note that in the 10th century CE,the greatest Arab chroniclers andhistorians mentioned the existence ofgates that provided access tosubterranean galleries under theSphinx. This, however, is a differentstory. ∞

Those of us who have animals inour care already tune in to them, andRanquet shows by example how toimprove our interactions usingfeelings, images and words in anenhanced telepathic communication. As a facilitator, she shows howpeople can learn to decode whattheir animals are trying to tell themand set up a two-way connectionthat's based on tapping into OneMind. Her stories are extraordinary:instances of animals that decry an

owner's lack of humour, that reinforcebad behaviour due to the wrongemotional signals being transmitted, and that mirror an owner's ill health.

Ranquet works with each owner tomake them aware of their animals'thoughts, feelings and needs, bothphysical and emotional, and givesguidance on appropriate responsesincluding developing the means toensure domestic peace and harmony.Ranquet has much experience, too, inworking with trainers, breeders andanimal healthcare practitioners andhas inspired them in their work. To him, suchmetaphysical phenomena as near-death experiences, remote viewing, astral projection and even divineintervention are not to be ignoredbut to be explored. He takesseriously this interface with universalconsciousness and has found it canhelp his patents during and aftersurgery and also resolve questionsthat physical science alone can't.

Dr Turner applies empirical researchto alternative modalities that supportthe body-mind-spirit link and whichalso happen to be at the heart oftraditional Hawaiian spirituality andhealing. He makes a case for howalternative treatments work, not ifthey work. He also maintains that it'sthe outcome of the treatment, notthe method of operation, that'scrucial. THE HOLOGRAPHIC CANVAS by Sonia BarrettTimeline Publishing, CA, USA, 2008ISBN 978-0-6151-7355-9 (202pp tpb) Available: [email protected]; www.spiritinform.com

Humanity is bound to a "lineartime" consciousness, and, to

overcome it, we as individuals mustlearn to transcend the externalprogramming that makes up ourconsensus reality. That way, we canconnect to the matrix of the"holographic canvas", says holisticconsultant Sonia Barrett.

To become awakened beings at onewith the Source, we need to shift ourbeliefs and perceptions, she says, and this requires movement: anincrease in vibration; in fact, a shift ofenergy at cycles per second—the realmeaning of the ascension process. Itis our destiny to move to the nextlevel of growth, but we can't do sowithout coming to terms with thesocial, religious, political andeconomic systems that have beenholding down humanity for millennia.

In Barrett's view, which is informedby quantum physics, each of us is theSource and our sovereignty is anexpression of the infinity of creation,an unfolding of spiritual freedomthrough love's empowerment. We doindeed create our own reality, and it's

time to reawaken to cosmic science. Here, she covers perspectives on

time harmonics and travel, accessinghigher dimensions in the holographicmatrix, taking responsibility for ouremotions, and even programmingstem cells. She encourages us to findour own truth and not acceptanything that's thrown at us—andthat means not being attached tonotions of what may happen in 2012.Our DNA is already encoded with a"time release capsule" of "futurememory", but it won't open unless wedissolve the veils of separateness.

Barrett's take has similarities withthe thoughts of the great sages andquantum thinkers, and it embracesspirituality and science in a way thatcan engage today's seekers.

VISION OF ALBION: The Key tothe Holy Grailby Barry DunfordSacred Connections, UK, 2008ISBN 0-9541873-1-8 (464pp tpb)Available: sacredconnections.co.uk

In Vision of Albion, Barry Dunfordextends the argument he put

forward in The Holy Land of Scotland(review, 10/01), with thanks to themystic poet William Blake to whomAlbion, the British Isles, was the "trueHoly Land of Christ". Informing himis his uncovering of a groundswell ofesoteric truth behind the existenceand mission of Christ on this Earth.

Dunford's starting point centresaround the 1906-dated stained glasswindow in Kilmore Church on the

Scottish Isle of Mull, which depicts ahaloed Jesus with a pregnant, girdledwoman, apparently Mary Magdalene.Such depiction pre-dates latter-daydiscussion that the two were married.

Dunford examines the Christ lineagein Scotland, the travels of Joseph ofArimathea in southwest England, theestablishment of the Celtic Church, the true Grail, the enigmatic RosslynChapel in Scotland, sacred geographyof the British Isles, the Hollow Earthmystery, Britain's Shambhala WorldAxis and more. He assures us thatwe can look forward to the SecondComing as the awakening of theunified consciousness in all humanhearts and a raising of vibrationalfrequencies in our physical forms. This is the real message of JesusChrist, Dunford insists.

A WORLD OF UFOs by Chris A. RutkowskiDundurn Press, Toronto, Canada, 2008ISBN 978-1-55002-833-1 (315pp tpb) Available: www.dundurn.com

Whether you're steeped in UFOlore or have never ventured into

the literature, this book provides keyhighlights as well as little-knowndetails for the initiated and a broadoverview for the novice. ChrisRutkowski, a science/astronomywriter and a UFO researcher since the1970s (see Abductions and Aliens, 8/03),aims to show in A World of UFOs thatthe phenomenon is truly global innature and has been increasinglyprolific since at least the 1940s.

Having to start somewhere indescribing phenomena involvingUFOs, ET encounters and alienabductions, Rutkowski chose todivide the first part of his book intothree categories: the most famous, the most bizarre and, in his opinion, the most interesting cases. TheRoswell crash, the Manhattanabductions of Linda Napolitano andthe Belgian flying triangle sightingsare among 15 incidents summarised.

For the second part, he selected keycases from each continent (includingAntarctica) to prove his point aboutthe ubiquity of UFOs, yet many ofthese incidents are not well known.

For the third section, Rutkowskicompiled an A–Z of sorts, from alienabductions and governmentknowledge to media reporting, science fiction and humanity seen asa zoo by some ETs. Admitting thathe's never seen a UFO, he reiterateshis keenness to follow up witnesstestimony and encourages readers todo their own research. He closeswith tips on how to report a sighting.Explanations may be elusive, but hetakes delight in the wonders.

THE PHILOSOPHERS' STONE:Alchemy and the Secret Research forExotic Matterby Joseph P. FarrellFeral House, WA, USA, 2009 ISBN 978-1-932595-40-6 (350pp tpb)Available: www.feralhouse.com;Consortium, tel (651) 221 9035

The alchemical workings of themediaeval period have their

counterparts today in frontierphysics, says Joseph P. Farrell in ThePhilosophers' Stone. The author ofsuch books as the Giza Death Starseries (see 11/02, 13/01), The SSBrotherhood of the Bell (13/05) and NaziInternational (16/02), Farrell has a firmgrasp of the links between thescience and meaning of ancientesoteric traditions and the secretspace programs started by the Nazisand taken over by NASA.

Here he's concerned with the themeof exotic matter, the idea of the non-locality of the physical medium andits hyper-dimensional properties, andthe notion of torsion as representingthe folding that occurs in a spiralling, rotating system of space—all knownto the ancients. The alchemicalmatter that occupies his focus here ispart and parcel of torsion physics andincludes the high-spin-state "serum"of the Nazi Bell antigravitationaldevice, the "red mercury" of Soviet

ballistic technology, and themonatomic "white powder gold"rediscovered by American DavidHudson in the early 1980s. And justas the ancient knowledge wascarefully guarded in its day, so too isthe lost science that's beingrecovered; indeed, certain shadowygroups have a vested interest inmonopolising it.

In closing, Farrell goes full circle bycomparing the view of space as alattice of information or a "crystal",whose defects are the physical forces, with the idea of Great Pyramid as a"massive crystal of the greatestalchemical, hyper-dimensionalmachine of mankind". He brings thetrue meaning of the Holy Grail to thefore in this far-reaching book.

Gaffney is certain that the samepowerful interests that subverted the9/11 Commission will use all theirinfluence to block or at least controlany new investigation. BEHIND CLOSED DOORS: The Power and Influence of SecretSocietiesby Michael StreeterNew Holland Publishers, UK, 2008ISBN 978-1-84537-937-7 (272pp hc)Available: newhollandpublishers.com;www.amazon.com

Humankind throughout its historyhas valued secrecy and privacy,

so it's no wonder that secret societieshave flourished for various purposes, whether to hold ideas dear, to fomentrevolution or to protect spiritual orreligious truths. Here, investigativejournalist Michael Streeter takes us"behind closed doors" to examinehow secretive groups have playedtheir part in shaping the world intheir times and beyond.

Secret societies in many cases havebeen feared and misinterpreted, often unjustifiably and sometimeswith due cause says Streeter in thisserious and sensible examination.Included in his coverage are thesacred mystery schools of theEgyptian priests and of the Greekmathematician Pythagoras, theKnights Templar and the Cathars whoso incensed the Roman CatholicChurch, the Freemasons (the mostfamous, he suggests, being GeorgeWashington), apparently enlightenedmagicians like John Dee and his ilk,and the so-called Illuminatiestablished by Adam Weishaupt.

His overview of more modern timesincludes Cecil Rhodes with his elitistBritish imperialist ambitions, theBilderberg Group, the orthodoxCatholic Opus Dei, benevolent OddFellows, the so-called Church ofScientology and criminal societiessuch as the Mafia, whether in Italy,America or Russia. As for theBilderbergers, Streeter questions themotives of its wealthy, powerfulmembers in comparison with othersecret societies that formed tocounter the actions of the wealthyand influential of their day.

Streeter's exposé is thoughtful, stripping away the paranoia to try toget to the truth of the matter.

The occult or hidden, esotericaspect of politics is not the

exclusive domain of the right wing, nor is it associated only with fascism.Countercultural critic Gary Lachmanproposes that there is also aprogressive, left-wing occult politicalstream that has sought to influencethe fate of societies. However, nothing is clear-cut in this occultworld, where even spiritually orientedindividuals can hold right-wing viewsand where radical extremes of leftand right may share a commondisdain for modernity and believethat an elite vanguard must steer themasses towards a new golden age.

Lachman selects key occult moversand shakers from the early 1600sonwards, including the Rosicrucians, the British Royal Society, theFreemasons, Swedenborg and hiserotic esoterica, the Illuminist AdamWeishaupt, occultists on both sidesof the American and Frenchrevolutions, Theosophist HelenBlavatsky, Nicholas Roerich and hismystically inspired peace initiatives, and Nazis steeped in esotericism. Hewarns of the rising tide of Christianfundamentalism in America, andfavours the pursuit of personalfreedom even amidst a numbingpopular culture. A fascinating workthat's a breath of fresh air.

REVIEWSTHE HOUSE OF WISDOMby Jonathan LyonsBloomsbury Publishing, London &New York, 2009ISBN 978-1-4088-0031-7 (248pp tpb)Available: www.allenandunwin.com;www.bloomsbury.com

Western civilisation owes a hugedebt of gratitude to Arab and

Islamic philosophers, physicians, scientists and scholars. Followingthe fall of the Roman Empire, muchof what we know of as the West wasin the grip of the Dark Ages whileArab culture was nurturing apowerhouse of intellectualexploration. Yet word was filteringout to adventurous Western thinkers.

Jonathan Lyons, a former foreigncorrespondent for Reuters and now aPhD candidate in the sociology ofreligion at Monash University,Melbourne, reveals the extent of Arabthinkers' influence on the West andeventually on what we call theRenaissance which ultimately led tothe scientific revolution.

Starting out with Peter the Hermit'sreprehensible pre-Crusadesbarbarism across Europe and intoConstantinople, Lyons goes on todescribe how the Muslims inevitablyresponded in kind with a return tofundamentalist values. But notbefore they gave the world themathematical techniques of algebraand trigonometry, geographicaladvances such as the ability tomeasure the Earth's circumferenceand map its lands (at a time whenwesterners regarded the Earth asbeing flat), breakthroughs inmedicine and pharmacology, translations of important classicalGreek texts, useful technologies inpaper and lenses, and a realunderstanding of the magical worldminus the superstition.

Lyons acknowledges the importanceof Islam in the development of Arabscience, and one can't help butconclude that the so-called "war onterror" which demonises Muslim"infidels" today is as much a mistakeas were the Crusades.

THE SPHINX MYSTERYby Robert Temple w. Olivia TempleInner Traditions, Vermont, USA, 2009ISBN 978-1-59477-271-9 (565pp tpb)Available: www.deep-books.co.uk;www.InnerTraditions.com

In the revised edition of his best-selling book The Sirius Mystery (1998;

5/04), Robert Temple gave clues to acompletely different interpretation ofthe Great Sphinx. Here, he expandsupon these amazing assertions.

Chief among them is that, contraryto long-time consensus belief, thebody of the Sphinx does not portray alion at all; it's a crouching wild dog,or at least a jackal, and it representsthe god Anubis (or Anpu). Anubisguarded the dead and thus had animportant role on the Giza Plateaunecropolis as part of a pharaonicresurrection cult. Furthermore, during the Old Kingdom, the Anubismonument was surrounded by amoat filled with water that formedwhat the ancient Pyramid Texts calledJackal Lake. While it's accepted thatthe disproportionately small head ofthe Sphinx was recarved into humanform, it did not portray Cheops orChephren but a much later pharaoh,Amenemhet II of the Twelfth Dynasty.

Temple analyses ancient texts, commentaries, later eyewitnessaccounts and early photographs, uncovering overlooked details. Hediscusses now-sealed secretchambers and his exploration of atunnel at the rear of the structure(see www.sphinxmystery.info). This isindeed a monumental work!

The economic prospects are terrify-ing. Bankruptcies in the UnitedStates, Canada and the EuropeanUnion are occurring at an alarmingrate. Country-level exports have col-lapsed, leading to a contraction ofinternational trade.

Reports from the Asian economiesindicate a massive increase in unem-ployment. In China's Pearl RiverBasin in southern GuangdongProvince's industrial export process-ing economy, some 700,000 workerswere laid off in January. In Japan, industrial output has collapsed bymore than 20 per cent sinceDecember. In the Philippines, exportscollapsed by more than 40 per cent inDecember.

There are no solutions under theprevailing global financial architec-ture. Meaningful policies cannot beachieved without radically reformingthe workings of the internationalbanking system.

What is required is an overhaul ofthe monetary system including thefunctions and ownership of the cen-tral bank, the arrest and prosecutionof those involved in financial fraudboth in the financial system and ingovernmental agencies, the freezingof all accounts where fraudulenttransfers have been deposited, andthe cancellation of debts resultingfrom fraudulent trade and/or marketmanipulation.

People across the globe mustmobilise. This struggle to democra-tise the financial and fiscal apparatusmust be broad-based and democrat-ic, encompassing all sectors of soci-ety at all levels in all countries. Whatis ultimately required is to disarm thefinancial establishment. We need to:

• confiscate those assets whichwere obtained through fraud andfinancial manipulation;

• restore the savings of householdsthrough reverse transfers;

• return the bail-out money to the

Treasury and freeze the activities ofthe hedge funds;

• freeze the gamut of speculativetransactions including short-sellingand derivatives trading. ∞

When I saw the ruins in 1975—viathe Morocco Exploration, sponsored by Europa House at theUniversity of Illinois—myinvestigations revealed that thereare clearly and indisputably threelevels, representing three totallydifferent cultures.

The top layer (the most recent) isRoman; the layer beneath it isCarthaginian; but the lowest level iswhat attracted my interest: stonemasonry representing some totallyunknown, prehistoric culture.

This bottom level literally jumpsout at the observer, since itincorporates massive stones andthe peculiar polygonal style similarto that used in prehistoric SouthAmerica.

The question which occurs to meis: what are these similar masonrystyles doing on opposite sides ofthe Atlantic Ocean?

More Evidence for Atlantis? There are other specific ruins

scattered about the world which couldpossibly be associated with Atlantis, some of which I have visited andsome not. Since these are several innumber, I merely list them:

• megalithic ruins on the island ofMalta, with "ruts" going into theMediterranean Sea;

• various underwater ruins in theAegean Islands;

• underwater ruins near the BahamaIslands in the Atlantic Ocean;

• reported ruins in Atlantic watersoffshore near Cádiz, Spain;

• underwater ruins located offMorocco in 50–60 feet of water;

• mysterious ruins on the sea floornear the Canary Islands;

• the stone circles of Brittany, whichtrail off into the Atlantic.

Several of these are totallyunderwater, while others are onlypartially submerged. Some appear tobe ports having harbours. Sincenobody in their right mind would

suggest that the ancient buildersoriginally built the structures underthe waters, the only other option isthat the rising sea covered them—andthis would have happened 10,000 (±3,000) years ago, so they would haveto be at least that old. ∞

what orbs really are and what theymean, we may need to take a widerview and a closer look at thesesmall transient lights, at ch'i energyand at current theories about thequantum nature of Reality.

Consciousness and the cosmosAs a species, we are on the verge

of a totally new view of the universewhich will be as radically differentto orthodox scientific views asDarwinian evolutionary theory wasto the rigid dogma of thefundamentalist creationists of thelate 19th century.

In the last 10 years, advances inneuroscience have brought us newrevelations about the human mind, added to which quantum physicshas revealed a dynamic newuniverse where mind and matter areinextricably connected.

In this new universe it is apparentthat consciousness, not matter, is

the foundation of everything whichexists.

Everything is interconnected bythought and intentionality.

We live in a synchronistic, conscious cosmos, in a quantumuniverse which has more incommon with ancient metaphysicalconcepts such as the Tao and ch'ithan it does with the particle-basedworld of Newtonian physics.

It is in this conceptual frameworkthat I believe we must view thephenomenon of orbs, for accordingto the evidence it touches directlyupon the existence of this greaterReality, perhaps even upon thenature of consciousness itself.

Our own experiences and those ofmany others indicate that orbs aredynamic entities which evidenceconscious purpose. In terms of theinterconnectedness of all things, orbs are perhaps reminding us allindividually that we are not alone—and never were! ∞
