Let’s stay connected and meet a volunteer in the Proclaimer ministry.

Let’s meet Dan Weaver.

Please tell us a bit about yourself. I grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska and met my wife, Kathy in the first week of medical school in Cleveland in 1977. We were fighting over the last scoop of Rocky Road ice cream in the dorm (she got it). After completing our medical training at the Mayo Clinic, we moved to Billings in 1992. Kathy “retired” from her work as a psychiatrist to care for our four children and I started my practice at the Billings Clinic as the first pediatric ophthalmologist in Montana. I perform eye surgery in children and adults. Kathy is a cradle-Catholic from a large Italian family in southern California; I was raised Episcopal and came into the church in 1993, sponsored by Father Charles Mears who was

filling-in at St. Thomas during Father Bourke’s sabbatical in Ireland. Please tell us which Mass you proclaim at and how long you’ve been a Proclaimer. What brought you to this ministry initially? I proclaim at both the 5:00 pm vigil and the 10:30 am Sunday service and have been a Proclaimer for about 20 years. This ministry is particularly enjoyable to me as it encourages me to study the Scriptures before Mass and share the Scriptures with the congregation. I consider this a privilege. I was drawn to this ministry to increase my level of participation in church activities as an example for my children. After we lost our oldest daughter, Melissa in a plane crash in 2010, I viewed this ministry as an opportunity to deepen my faith in God and help heal the wounds from this family tragedy.

We attended the 10:30 am Mass on Sunday when our children were growing up. We sat in the front row so that they would pay attention during Mass. One stern look from Father Bourke was usually enough to keep them in line! We have begun attending the vigil Mass since the start of the pandemic as it seems to work better with our work schedule. What changes have you seen in your ministry over the years, particularly since the pandemic restrictions? Why have you chosen to continue serving? Have you volunteered in other capacities? I continue to observe the reverence with which the Proclaimers view their role and find this inspiring. The pandemic did not change my desire to participate, and I have found myself proclaiming more often since last year. The bishop’s support of pandemic restrictions helped many proclaimers feel safe; being vaccinated and wearing a mask makes sense to me as a health care provider. I have also served in the St. Thomas Men’s group and look forward to returning to this after pandemic restrictions are relaxed. As hope rises for an end to the pandemic, what message do you have to share with your parish family? Every day is a new beginning. Be thankful for the opportunity. Speaking as a golfer, a “mulligan” is another chance to hit a better shot. Remember that God gives us another “mulligan” every morning. Relish this opportunity and always give it your best shot. As for the pandemic: this too shall pass!

Community Needs During Lent, many of us will focus on our prayer life, our fasting and our alms-giving to the poor. These three actions are central to our Lenten journey, ultimately leading us to Easter. In the remaining days of Lent, St. Vincent de Paul asks you to remember them in prayer. If you fast, think of the many people who are truly hungry that come through their doors in search of a meal. If you plan to give alms, please consider giving to their many programs, which keeps them operating. A continued Blessed Lent to everyone.

“[The Gospel of Life] is therefore meant to be a precise and vigorous reaffirmation of the value of human life and its inviolability, and at the same time a pressing ap-peal addressed to each and every person, in the name of God: respect, protect, love and serve life, every human life! Only in this direction will you find justice, development, true freedom, peace and happiness!”

Word of Life Dearest St. Joseph, at the word of an angel, you lovingly took Mary into your home. As God’s humble servant, you guided the Holy Family on the road to Bethlehem, welcomed Jesus as your own son in the shelter of a manger, and fled far from your homeland for the safety of both Mother and Child… Help us to faithfully commit ourselves to the service and defense of human life — especially where it is vulnerable or threatened. Obtain for us the grace to do the will of God in all things. Amen.

In preparation for Oct. 24:

FOLLOWING JESUS/ DISCIPLESHIP

“Master, I want to see.” (vs 51b) Mark 10:46-52

1. What helps you to see as Jesus wants us to see? What is one of the great “eye-opening experiences” that you have ever had?

2. Are you living out a vision of faith? Bartimaeus found the way. Can You? 3. What is the one thing Jesus is saying to us in this Sunday’s Gospel about how a disciple should speak or

act? And what do you need to do or change to be a better disciple? Obstacles of living out the Gospel: Ex: apathy, priorities, time — not taking the time to recognize God at work in your life, to stop and pray, read the Bible, go to Mass, try Adoration, etc.

1. Can you think of any other ways in which people might be blind? Blind to the faith? Blind to love?

2. Have you ever been blind to something? What helped you see?

Obstacles of living out the Gospel: Too wrapped up in the things of this world; too wrapped up in ourselves.

Bartimaeus was often overlooked because he was a blind beggar. When he called out to Jesus, the crowd told him to be quiet — but he just called out louder. When Jesus acknowledged Bartimaeus and cured him, the crowd also accepted Bartimaeus. 1. Why do you think Jesus cured Bartimaeus? 2. How do you treat a person who is blind or

has a handicap? 3. Giving Bartimaeus his sight back also gave

everyone else new eyes of faith. What lesson do you think Jesus is trying to teach us?

4. Do you look at life through your faith? How can you do this better?

Obstacles of living out the Gospel: If we only have eyes for what the world or society thinks is important (like popularity or possessions); if we look down on others who are not like us (physically, racially or think differently than us); if we don’t look through eyes of faith and think only of ourselves.

We BELIEVE We GROW
