Scripture Reading: Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23

Dear Past, thank you for your lessons. Dear Future, I’m ready.

Dear God, thank you for another chance. —Anon.

went for a walk a couple of days ago on the beach at low tide. Quail Beach on Oregon’s Pacific coast is beautiful — wide and sandy and punctuated with craggy cairns and

fascinating tide pools. The next day, I went out again at low tide. Now, however, the waves had swept the sand

away to reveal a flat bed of rough volcanic rock. Where the sheets of rock ended, I found a large area of pebbles of various sizes. People walked about in the midst of all these pebbles, their shoulders hunched and the heads down. They were looking for agates!

But, as you probably know, agates on the beach don’t look pretty. To me, they just look like any other stone. But to a trained eye, a nondescript, black stone can be a beautiful agate in the rough.

These people can see a diamond where I see dust; they can see a glitter when all I see is gloom; they can see color when all I see is corruption. As I was walking past these milling people — their eyes trained on the pebbles at their feet — I thought of times when I seemed swamped by waves and crests of sand. I felt buried — forgotten and forlorn, encrusted and not trusted … until there was a sweeping of the waters, a remembering of my baptism, and a sense that Someone was walking this beach.

This Someone was looking for pebbles, looking for me, and finding me — a very plain rock, not worth looking at. Yet, the Lord knew that after some shaping and polishing, and placed in a proper setting, I could reflect the glory of the One who found me and cleaned me up.

And that’s all I was ever intended to be! —Timothy Merrill

Prayer: Almighty God, thank you for searching for me, for making out of my life something beautiful. I give you thanks in the name of Jesus Christ, Lord and Savior. Amen.

I
