There are 6 billion mobile subscriptions globally, & 1 billion smartphones in use
The first number is from the ITU (note that many people have more than one phone so this is not 6 billion people with mobiles), and the second comes from Strategy Analytics who estimate that by the end of Q3 2012 there were 1.038 billion smartphones in use

Google is activating 1.3m Android devices a day
Google has revealed that it is activating 1.3 million Android devices a day, up from 1 million a day in June. In September the install base was 480m users, so it must be over 500 million by now

This rule of thumb was revealed in testimony in the Apple-Samsung court case in the US. This means that Apple is likely sell over 200 million iPhone 5s

Almost half of the UK’s smartphone users have used their phones to research product information before or during a shopping visit, which means that smartphones influence 6%, or over £15 billion in UK sales. Slightly simplistic working, but still an interesting figure

Making physical products can be nearly as fast as creating digital content. Users of the Crowdsourcing site Quirky started work on a range of iPhone 5 products (mainly cases and mounts) and had them on sale via Fab.com within 7 days

According to Mark Zuckerberg Facebook reached this milestone at 12.45pmm Pacific Standard Time on 14th September. Other stats included 219 billion photos uploaded, and 17 billion location-tagged posts, including checkins

Brands have let people ‘pay with a tweet’ before – it’s well known for eBooks and music – but Kellogg’s did it in a physical store for the first time in London in September to launch their Special K Cracker Crisps. Customers had to post a tweet with the hashtag inside the shop to claim a free packet
