Over 60% of the world’s population now has a phone, with 75% of the growth in the last 12 months coming in Asia, and Africa. 40% of phones sold in 2012 were smartphones

3 times as many smartphones as PCs shipped in China in Q3

Over 60 million smartphones were shipped in China in July – September 2012, compared to under 20 million PCs. This was helped by a new wave of handsets that cost less than $150

75% of Chinese internet users connect over mobile

New figures announced by China’s official body CNNIC reveal that there are 564m internet users in total in December 2012, and 420m (75%) of them connect at some point by mobile, up from 69% of users in December 2011

British kids migrate to smartphones at about eleven

Data from Ofcom shows that at eleven the number of kids with smartphones starts to exceed the number with feature phones, and grows sharply from this point

More than 50% of online activity on Christmas Day in the UK was on mobile or tablet

It’s a bit of a convoluted metric (it means that more than 50% of actions carried out online, rather than users or page views) but it shows how much mobile is now part of the internet experience

Mobile commerce is really taking off in the US, with an 81% year on year growth, and now accounts for 11% of all ecommerce

eBay & Paypal both saw new records for mobile usage at Black Friday

23rd November was a huge day for mobile payments in the US with eBay saying the value of sales was up 150%, and Paypal 193%

Mobile accounts for more than 20% of Orbitz hotel bookings

Mobile hotel booking is taking off. While it’s 20% of all bookings, for short term booking mobile are much higher – 60-65% of mobile bookings are for rooms the same day

eBay’s mobile-centric Pop-up Shop in London

eBay opened a pop-up shop made of shipping containers in London in the final weekend of November. No physical goods were on sale, but visitors could shop on their phones with the eBay app, and see products using augmented reality

Kickstarter is an astonishing success story. It was only founded in 2009, but in 2012 320 million was raised to fund over 18,000 projects, including 63 films that were released in cinemas

Gangnam Style is the first video to hit one billion views on YouTube

Gangnam Style was only uploaded in July 2012, but within 5 months it became the first video to have more than one billion views. It’s now had 1.2 billion

It’s an amazing stat, but it’s true. On average in the last ten years, 4 software companies worth a billion dollars are created every year. For example 2008 had Airbnb, Yammer, Groupon and Pinterest

Siri is coming to your car. From early 2013 some models of the Chevrolet Spark and Sonic will integrate Siri to perform some tasks either in the car, for example in operating the entertainment system, or sending text messages

New data shows that in September 2012 Facebook had 179 million visitors, 92m of whom sometimes accessed via mobile; for Twitter it was 57m and 30m

Facebook gets 14% of its ad revenue from mobile

Facebook only allowed advertising on mobile users’ news feeds in February, but already it’s providing 14% of ad revenues. Rumours has it that it may have now grown to 20%

40% of Tweets at prime time in the UK are about TV

No wonder so many of the trending topics in the UK are about TV. It’s become a good indication of interest – for example James Arthur’s songs at the X Factor final generated the most Tweets; he then went on to win the competition

Chinese consumers spent $4.8 billion online on Singles Day 2012

11/11 is singles day in China (all the ones – get it?), and has become the world’s most popular day for ecommerce. In 2012 $4.8 billion was spent online, including $3 bn on Alibaba sites

Boxing Day was the biggest day ever for ecommerce in the UK

According to Experian, UK shoppers made 113 million visits to eCommerce sites, an increase of 17% from 2011.
