SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETINGS— 31st Oct & 5th December 2012
A Message from the Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to Term 4. We have had a wonderfully smooth start to the new term . Our students and staff have got straight back into learning and teaching. Term 4 is a busy term. We have many activities and special events planned for the upcoming weeks, please ensure you continue to check the calendar on our web page. This week we received the results of the Parent Attitude Survey, which many of you completed last Term. We are pleased to inform you that overall Parents are extremely happy with all elements of our school. In most areas we are scoring above State averages. Please access the results on the school web page. We are pleased to announce that the Prep enrolments for 2013 are finalized. All new Prep students have visited the school and had a chance to meet with other students and members of our leadership team. In the coming weeks we will conduct transition sessions for these enrolled students and will be holding our Prep information session for parents. You may have noticed the extension to the staff car park has commenced and should be finalised shortly. Once the car park is operational a number of car parking spaces will be freed up around the school. The Wyndham Council has visited the site and have promised that Parking Signs and Zones will be erected shortly, in the meantime please ensure you exercise extreme caution at all times whilst picking up and dropping off your children. As you will be aware, The Department is currently involved in enterprise bargaining with the Australian Education Union (AEU), the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) and United Voice in relation to their logs of claims covering employees in the Executive Class, the Principal Class, the Teacher Class, the Paraprofessional Class and the Education Support Class. As part of the Unions’ industrial campaigns some members of the Truganina South Primary School staff will be implementing a half day stoppage on Friday 19th October.
I will continue to keep you informed as more details come to hand.

Welcome back to what will be a very busy term 4! It’s hard to believe that our little preps are nearly ready to head into grade one soon and at the other end of the school, our year 6s will be preparing themselves for Year 7! October is jam packed with lots of National Events for school. To begin the term, it is “Walk to School” month. VicHealth would like to encourage all children to develop healthy habits by walking to and from school for each day in October. Children who log their activities online to enter weekly competitions with prizes ranging from Clarks shoes, vouchers and family passes to the YMCA, Melbourne Museum and the National Sports Museum. Walk to school month will also assist us with our Travel Smart plan and reducing the traffic around the school! So take the time to register your children at www.walktoschool.vic.gov.au. October also celebrates “Children’s Week” from 20th – 28th October. Children’s week offers a range of free activities for families to participate in during the week. You can find a calendar of events for our local area and activities around Melbourne, at www.education.vic.gov.au/childrensweek. Truganina South will celebrate children’s week with a family lunch on Thursday 25th October. The Premiers Reading Challenge concluded last term. Congratulations to all those who participated and logged all the books they read and shared as a family. During October and November, certificates will be issued to students and The Age honour roll will be published. We will present the certificates at one of our Monday morning assemblies. Emerald and Turquoise Communities will be participating in their camping program this term with a sleep over at school. It is extremely important that all students participate in the program. If you have any questions or concerns please make sure that you speak to one of your child’s teachers as soon as possible. Students will also be participating in either the swimming or bike education program. Our students in Prep-2 will participate in a 10 day intensive swimming program. It is strongly recommended that all children participate in this program as it assists them with developing positive water safety skills. All students should have received their notes for the swimming program, if you have not received a note yet please make sure you speak to a teacher from your child’s community. Students in the 3-6 Communities will participate in a 10 day intensive bike education program. The program has been developed as part of our Travel Smart Plan to provide our students with the skills to ride to school safely, reducing the traffic around the school, keeping our students safe. Truganina South Primary Sports report Girls Softball Competition
(Monday 3rd September, 2012)
10 of our year 5/6 girls ventured down to Presidents Park in Werribee to participate in the Hoppers Crossing district girls’
softball tournament.
Our team played 3 games, going down in the first game against The Grange 17-5. The second game saw our girls have a
great win against Good News 10-5 and the final game was a little one sided against the eventual winners of the tournament
Baden Powell: Derrimut Heath 23 – 3.
All of the girls who participated enjoyed the opportunity of playing a sport that they had not had a lot of involvement in
before and they represented our school in the best possible way. Well done girls!!

Hoppers Crossing District Athletics Carnival
(Wednesday 12th September, 2012)
60 of our year 3-6 students ventured down to the VUT Athletics track in Werribee to compete in the annual Hoppers
Crossing district Athletics carnival. Our students competed to the best of their ability throughout the day with some
standout performances.
A huge congratulations to the following students who have qualified for the Western Metropolitan Region Athletics
finals at Keilor Athletics track on 16th & 18th October, 2012:
We should be very proud of the efforts of our students who represented our school in the best possible way pushing
our school into 7th position overall (out of 13 schools). This is a great effort when we consider that this is just the 2nd
time that we have competed in the athletics carnival! Also, it was great to see a number of parents supporting our
students throughout the day. Finally, well done and congratulations to all of the students who competed throughout
the day!

CUA Community Care $5000 Grant
We need your help!
At Truganina South Primary, we believe that it is very important to encourage our students to lead
active and healthy lifestyles. As you may know, our school participated in the Adidas School
Athletics Carnival, a healthy alternative to traditional chocolate drives. CUA is a valued partner of
the Carnival, and have offered us a further opportunity, to thank us for choosing health and fitness
for our students.
Truganina South Primary is now participating in the CUA Community Care program, and has the
chance to win $5,000 to assist us in getting soccer goals and a synthetic cricket pitch on our school
oval! However, in order to win the $5,000, we need your votes!
The national voting period is from the 10th of October to the 2nd of November, and the school with
the most community votes at the end of this period will win the $5,000. Please visit
www.cuacommunitycare.com.au on or after the 10th of October for more information, and to cast
your vote.
Please note: Each voter will be able to cast one online vote, and one in-branch vote, at our local
CUA branch, at Werribee. Please help us win the $5,000 grant, and improve our school and com-
munity!

YMCA—Truganina South With the weather becoming lovely for outdoor play we are now spending more and more time outdoors so we ask that all children come to After School Care with broad brimmed hats as our Sun Smart Policy is now being fol-lowed. Throughout the month we have continued to offer outdoor sports and various art activities such as paper mar-bling, flag making and puppet crafts. Children have shown a great interest in activities like slime making, cooking, Uno and board games as well as our most popular sporting games and outdoor activities. Holiday Program is JAM PACKED with awesome activities and incursions. My personal favourite – The Circus Spectacular day where we get to learn how to tight rope walk, juggle and become circus performers. For all those snake fans and reptile lovers we have a reptile day and many, many more things. This will be awesome and you wouldn’t want to miss it so please book your children in now to avoid disappointment. We have had a few staffing changes and it is with great sadness that we farewell Deepali. Her presence will be sorely missed and we hope to see her come back again in the near future. On a higher note – we would like to welcome Danielle to our OSHC team. With book week dress up day happening over the last month and our Community Father of the Year Celebration, we have had a very busy month. Congratulations to our Community Father of the Year Winner Jon who was nominated by his daughter Sophia.
We are always requesting feedback and suggestions for our programming so please do not hesitate to speak to any of our staff or email [email protected].
