Thank you to those families who provided us their information regarding their return to us for 2020. Our numbers are very healthy and we are excited to be planning for the future needs of our students as they transition into 2020. A reminder that we are full for 2020 prep enrolments and do not have further space to offer in that year level.

End of Year

As we approach the end of term we encourage all students (particularly those in year 5 and 6) to be considering their upcoming assessment and seeking feedback from their teachers as to how to build on their learning and obtain the very best results. Year 5 Parents please begin the conversation with your student about their Secondary enrolment choice. I know it seems early however High School visits and open events actually begin in March 2020; with excellence trials also that month. The semester 2 report card will also be utilised by Secondary partners in the application process. I wish all students every success in their final assessments.

Uniform

A reminder that black socks and knee high socks are NOT a part of the uniform at our school. Students will receive letters sent home from next week regarding this, in an attempt to remind students that the standards we have in our community start with wearing our uniform correctly. Should you require support to ensure you have correct uniforms please enquire about financial assistance applications from the Office.

HOTA Take to the Stage Showcase

It was an absolute privilege to work with the team on Monday supporting students and staff to bring to the stage this incredible production. A very special thank you to PnC supporters, parents and staff who made this event the huge success it is every year. A very personal thank you for the tireless efforts and above and beyond attitude of Mrs T and Mr Young in the design, production, organisation and choreography of the event.

Graffiti and Works

Unfortunately our school and Benowa Netball Courts were the victim of a graffiti attack recently. Whilst this obviously creates an unsightly representation of our beautiful school, it also costs money for us to have it removed and often re paint. If you see anything suspicious in our community please assist us in reporting it to Police.

Mid November will see the beginnings of classroom and facility interruption as we move toward the refurbishment of Teaching Block 3. This refurbishment will include air conditioning and will be ready in Term 1. Additionally Teaching block 1 will also have roof replacement works begin in the Summer holidays and a repaint of Block 2 will also occur at this time. The vacant prep classroom will also undertake renovation over the break. This is a massive amount of infrastructure work that we have worked very hard to obtain and are excited that our school facilities will be updated to reflect the great work we do each day.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S PEN

It’s a Wrap!

As the “new kid on the block”, I had the privilege of watching both Acts of Take To The Stage on Monday night as an audience member, sitting with our Assistant Regional Director, Darren Scott, Mark Rickard, Principal at Benowa SHS, and Rob Molhoek, Local Member for Southport. We were all incredibly impressed with the standard of the performances and the professionalism of the organisation of the event. Mr Scott and Mr Molhoek, who both see many school performances in their different roles, were totally blown away by the quality of our show!

This event highlighted for me the rich culture that is ‘BPSS’ - and has given me a huge insight into the connections across all facets of the school. While Monday night would not have happened without the amazing staff, students and families in our school community, a huge thank you must go to Mr Mat Young and Ms Kerri Theuerkauf who were instrumental in the planning and organisation of this annual showcase event. Finally, to all the children who performed – congratulations on your commitment and enthusiasm, you were all absolutely amazing!

Semester 2 Assessment and Reporting

Over the coming weeks, teachers will be finalising their teaching programs and related assessment tasks in readiness for Semester 2 reports. Students’ Semester 2 reports will be emailed out to parents on the final day of the school year, so please let the office know if your email has recently changed to ensure you receive your child(ren)’s reports in time for the summer vacation.

Reporting is Based on Evidence

Schools report to parents on student achievement twice a year, against the relevant achievement standards for each learning area or subject,

according to the Australian Curriculum.

Reports reflect:

judgments about the quality of student learning based on evidence collected during the reporting period, and

the student’s most consistent level of achievement during that reporting period i.e. Semester 1 or Semester 2.

The evidence of each student’s achievement is collected using a range of assessments aligned to the curriculum.

‘On-balance’ Judgments – The Rating Scale

Teachers make an on-balance judgment to award an overall level of achievement in the learning area or subject at the end of a reporting

period, based on the quality of student work in relation to the elements of the achievement standard that have been taught and assessed

during the reporting period.

A level of achievement is then awarded using a five-point scale. The five-point scale for each year level is as follows: -

Understanding the “C” standard

Achieving a ‘C’ (‘Working With’ / ‘Sound’) in Achievement on the report card means that your child has met the appropriate criteria for that

year level. Any student who shows sufficient evidence of meeting the required criteria for a particular level – whether it be a ‘C’, ‘A’ or ‘B’ – will

be allocated that grade.

Therefore, students allocated a ‘C’ demonstrate that they are achieving the expected level of knowledge and understanding for their year level,

based on the criteria set out in the Australian Curriculum. So, a “C” means that the student’s academic development is exactly where it needs

to be and that they are well placed, in preparation for the next year’s learning.

What does a rating of “N” mean?

Parents, please note, students may, on occasion, receive a rating of “N” when there has been insufficient evidence available to the teacher to

make a judgement on the child’s level of achievement. This is usually the result of either being new to the school or extensive absenteeism.

This may occur for one subject, in particular where a student has missed several lessons for that subject or specialist area. Teachers therefore

cannot make a judgement on a student’s level of achievement if they have not been present for sufficient learning to have occurred for that

subject during the current Semester.
