Auctioneer’s Report (Greg MacDougall):

Another large company of buyers from all corners of the UK including a strong contingent from Wales ensured all classes met with the dearest trade of the season. Following on from the jump in the finished lamb price all classes would be £8-£10 dearer on the fort-night. Over 5000 forward and many more could have been sold with buyers leaving short and some not even getting started. Overall average £88.76+ £21 on the same side last year for 1821 more sold. Smart Beltex types keenly contested for with plenty pens £110-£130. RA&C Benson, Gamswell topped the sale at £131 for a pen of 12 with Mason & Gardner selling a pen of 48 to £130. Strong Texel x and Suffolks often £105-£120. J C Wade & Son, Overton Bush once again selling a lovely run of lambs averaging £110.92 with there best pen to £114. Lake district farmers M & C Booth selling Texel crosses to £110.50. A lamb to sell sometime in early 2022 eitherside of £100 with longer keep lambs once again looking nicely sold oftern £80-£90. Some lambs in the £60’s but would be very lean and very small. Well over 1000 Mule lambs forward averaging £92.75. Stronger lambs £100+ with the first lamb in the ring from RW Mason to £127. A nice farming lamb in the £90’s all sale long with smaller types in the high £80’s, small leaner types £60+. A nice run of 207 mainly Mules from first time vendor C J Mallaber, Drakelow, Derbyshire averaged £101.63 with 98 lambs to £107.50. Horned lambs were once again easily placed, small types £50-£55 with medium lambs £60+. Nicely fleshed or stronger types £70-£80 with a few getting over £90 including a pen of SBF to £99. Another large entry expected on the 23rd with further entries invited.

Closing Sale of Breeding Sheep

Auctioneer’s Report (Will Alexander):

The closing sale of breeding sheep did not disappoint, with a strong trade for all classes. Tups peaked at £500 for a BFL Ram lamb from A&L Huddleston, whilst a 2 shear from Da-vid, Val & Andrew Lawson, peaked at £450.Continental tups to a high of £400 on numer-ous occasions, Tommy Sayer, Hackthorpe sold 3 pure Texels all at £400, matched by Lucas and Nairy with a crossbred. Others £250-£350 dependent on quality. Swale ewes, mainly 5crop and Broken, generally in the £60s peaking at £72 from BD & A Horner, Garsdale. Gimmer lambs saw the best Swale lambs at £65 from SM Towler, Malham, others £55-£60. Mule Gimmer Lambs a sharp trade £75-£95 topping at £115 from RS & A Wilson, Dent.

Auctioneer’s Report (Will Alexander): The better end of the heifers forward no different to last

fortnight, all regularly £2000+, a total of 9 over £2000, topping at £2180 for a lovely 19day calved 30litre heifer from David Knowles, Kendal, with Richard Robinson, Hoggetts close behind at £2150, whilst new vendor Dave Barton, Lupton realised £2100. Next draw £1600-£1800, with a few faulty or plainer end £1200-£1300. Cows to a high of £1820 from George Whitwell, with another new vendor A & J Carr, Dunsop Bridge realising £1700 with their 2nd calver. Trade of the day has to go to John Waller with is new calved Jersey Heifer at £1620.

As expected more numbers forward, best and strongest just as dear, £400+ with Steve Wallbank taking his usual top spot at £490 with is Angus bull, matched by Doug Wall-bank, Preston with a pair of Blue bulls. Continental bulls often £400+ with the mediums anywhere from £280-£340. Continental heifers to a top of £465 from Doug Wallbank, a pair from Dave Harrison at £435. Others £390-£420 with the mediums anywhere in the £200s. Another nice run of Charolais from Bambers Farms £300-£360, topping at £415. Younger beef calves harder to place and at realisation. Black and white bulls good to sell, the majority being strong reared sorts, best £200+, with the top three spots £240, £250, £270, mediums on the day £150-£190, with only two under £100, to average £175.

Auctioneer’s Report (Greg MacDougall): A larger entry of 2500 cast sheep forward to the usual busy

ringside of buyers. With numbers becoming tighter countrywide all classes meet with a sharper trade. Mule and strong-

est horned ewes particularly dear. Ewes topped at £208 for Beltex’s from Wannops Farms Ltd with cast rams topping

the sale at £230 from R Capstick & Son, Fell End closely followed at £220 for a pair from Procters Farm Ltd. Best ewes in

general £150-£200. Blue Texels got well into the money selling to £180 from D & C Gray, Station Cottage, Selkirk. Any

ewes with weight £120-£150 with leaner good selling types all £100+. Small meaty ewes and better grazers £80-£100.

Overall 600 mule ewes in the entry averaging £98.37, heavier types £110-£125 topping at £130 a category below £95-

£105 with leaner sorts £80+ a few small plain types selling in the £60’s. Strong horned ewes with meat breaking the £80

mark with D S Gregory topping with Swales at £84. Nice fleshed medium ewes £65-£75 with half meated sorts selling in

the £50’s, plain ewes depending on condition £25-£40. More cast rams forward some in big order and some well

worked. Overall average £130 with the best £160-£220. Plenty ewes required next week to full fill demand.

PRIME LAMBS: Another fantastic lamb trade with a rise of 8.6p on the week. A good show of both meat and weight

which were well received by the customers ringside. The vendors still choosing to show under finished lambs on a

Wednesday are still advised to show on a Tuesday in the stores to maximise returns. It is interesting to note lambs are

77.3p dearer per kilo than the same time last year for 1971 more sold. Topping the nights sale was 3 heavy Texels from

G & DM Howsam, Boston realising £170.50, with local farmers Procters Farm Ltd selling Texels to £170 and topping per

kilo at 414.6p. Smart export types 300p+ with the specials 330p-360p. A nice commercial sheep 270p-290p with plainer

lambs either side of 260p. Best heavy lambs in demand with D Breaks to £167, Broomhill Selkirk to £162 and JM An-

drews, Boscar Flats enjoying another brisk trade with several pens over £150. Texels and Ctl x lambs weighing 45kg-

50kg often £125-£135 depending on quality. Deadweight firms certainly getting a run for their money with mule lambs

adding up nicely, those weighing 45kg+ often £120-£125 with a handy weight (41kg-43kg) £111-£116 or 265p-276p a

kilo. J Twigge, Lindale topping per head at £125.50 a head, NL & CJ Brown, Claughton at 276.8p. The Mashams topped

at £134.50 for 49kg from T & D Wright. Best horned lambs 235p+ or adding up per head at £84-£91, poorer sorts 210p-
